HSC BOOSTER DAY

Year 12 Biology recently had the pleasure of travelling to Armidale to participate in a HSC Booster Day. We arrived late Sunday afternoon and promptly got pizza and had a viewing of Wonder Woman!

The following two days we walked around the uni participating in practicals and lectures for some of our school subjects. Some of us looked at rats for agriculture, some looked at exercise training equipment for PDHPE, while others went to General Maths workshops and got freddos. We all enjoyed the biology sessions looking at the way lab technicians test for diseases and tracing evolution from dinosaurs and before, all the way to us homosapiens. It was interesting to stay in the uni colleges and have a realistic accomodation experience. It was also nice to interact with students from other schools who we’ll later be competing against in the HSC. We all enjoyed getting to use the more ‘pricey’ equipment they have there. It was a really great opportunity to confirm the theoretical things we’d learnt in class in a hands on way.

Thank you to Mrs Grant for her hardwork organising this excursion, and also to Mr White for supervising!

Deputy Principal’s ReportMERRIWA - MY FIRST TWO WEEKS

Time flies when you’re having fun! Two weeks have passed since I arrived in Merriwa and I am settling into my role as Relieving Deputy Principal at Merriwa Central School. I am getting to know the students and staff and look forward to meeting more families as the term progresses.

A couple of good Merriwa frosts provided me with a chilly welcome during my first week in town and I have been told that it gets even colder. The climate here is a bit cooler than that of my home city Newcastle as its close proximity to the ocean keeps the temperature a lot milder than that of Merriwa. I did experience some very cold mornings in Bourke during the seven years I spent there however it’s the heat that I remember the most. Luckily I bought my sheepskin ugg boots with me.

I stayed for the Festival of the Fleeces last weekend and I wasn’t disappointed. What a fantastic community event. I spent a few hours at the ROAR Petting Zoo and was amazed at the high level of knowledge and skill demonstrated by our wonderful students as they captured the hearts and attention of all those who attended. I also enjoyed a scrumptious egg and bacon sandwich made by the ROAR team. The highlight of the day was the running of the sheep which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The onset of winter has meant that our students are rugging up against the cold. I would like to take this opportunity to remind our students of the requirement to wear full school uniform. Should it be the case that their uniform is not available on

any given day, the student should be provided with a note from home explaining why this is the case. If the student is unable to obtain an item of uniform for an extended period of time, please send in a note and a uniform pass will be issued. We thank you for your support in this matter.

Tomorrow we have 32 Year 5 and 6 students representing our school at the Upper Hunter Science and Engineering Challenge in Muswellbrook. The team will be competing against more than 20 Upper Hunter schools across a range of science and technology related experiments. We look forward to hearing news of what will undoubtedly be a fantastic and highly educational day.

NEXT ASSEMBLY

Please remember that our next Kindergarten-Year 6 assembly will be held next Friday, June 23, commencing at 2.15pm.

FAREWELL MRS MORGAN

Tomorrow afternoon, we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Talia Morgan for the rest of 2017. However, we aren’t saying sad goodbyes, as Mrs Morgan and her husband, Seth, are almost due to welcome their first child into the world.

Mrs Morgan is an incredibly valued teacher across our whole school, and we look forward to welcoming her back in the not too distant future, with a precious little baby to share.

Secondary ReportCENTRAL SCHOOLS SEVEN-A-SIDE RUGBY

On Tuesday, eight boys from Merriwa Central School travelled to Dubbo to compete in the Central Schools Western division 7-a-side rugby league gala day. With eight boys we were more than a little sceptical as to how we would go, however I was confident the boys would always give their best effort.

It is extremely pleasing to report that the boys qualified for the State carnival to be held next term finishing second out of eight schools. The grit and determination demonstrated by the young men was a spectacle to be seen; and we look forward to preparing for state.

A big thank you to the parents who assisted with transport on the day and for lending a hand throughout. Without your support, days like that do not happen.

As you read this the Under 14 boys will have just finished competing in their day at Dubbo, I am sure that they will have enjoyed the day as much as the Under 16’s.

All the boys are to be commended on their sportsmanship, they were true ambassadors for the school and community, playing the game in the true spirit.

Also, coming up, we have been lucky to be offered the opportunity for our girls to participate in a 9-a-side rugby league gala day which will be held on June 27 at Mayfield. This is an exciting opportunity for the girls, and I know they are all

looking forward to getting a little dirty on the day.

Well done boys and good luck to all our other competitors.

Student newspaper: The brainchild of Stage 2 student, Nate Brown, the first edition of the Student Newspaper hit the press this week. Nate’s enthusiasm for this idea and his wonderful organisational skills allowed the first edition to be published within 2 weeks of its inception. The newspaper is a very educative initiative as it grows student voice in the school. The views, opinions and interests of students are sought and accepted. In order to communicate these to the rest of the school community a good amount of researching, writing and editing is essential. Collaboration between students and across ages is needed to work as a team. All the boxes have been ticked and we hope you enjoy reading this article from the first edition.

COMING UP AT ST JOSEPH’S

Play practice with our fabulous, acclaimed actor and singer, Anna Kerrigan, this Wednesday. The school play will be held on Wednesday night September 6 in the School of Arts. Please mark this in your diary as it is an event not to be missed.

Good luck Darcy Taaffe! Darcy will represent our school and our diocese at the Catholic Primary Schools Cross Country Carnival at Eastern Creek. Another great challenge for Darcy, and she’s equal to the challenge!

Science and Engineering is so important for our children and their future. We look forward to reading all about the great day they will have on Friday as they compete against other Upper Hunter Schools in the Science and Engineering Challenge held in Muswellbrook.

Spelling is high on the agenda and the winners of today’s school wide spelling bee final will compete at Singleton next Monday June 19, against the winners of all our regional Catholic

Schools. For the first time, this year Kindergarten will compete at the regional level.

School athletes who qualified for regional athletics entry will travel to Singleton on June 20 to represent our school. We wish them luck and good competition!

Open Day will be held at St Joseph’s on the first day back after the holidays on July 17, 12 noon – 1.30pm. On this day all parents are invited to visit their children’s classroom and observe their working environment. The students love to see their parents sharing an interest in their school work. This is also the day where the families of all students starting Kinder in 2018 come to meet with the staff and learn about the wonderful educational institution that St Joseph’s is. STUDENT OF THE WEEK – BANJO HEYCOXBanjo has been awarded the Student of the Week for his consistent effort and participation in his learning.

Last week he responded well in shared reading activities on the story ‘Lost and Found’ and wrote a more detailed narrative about a horse that was lost. A great

sentence in his writing was, ‘One day Bobby jumped the fence, crossed the road and went to the giant school.’

One of Banjo’s learning goals have been to extend his pieces of writing and write more independently. Being a part of classroom discussions is a great way to demonstrate how well he has understood the book being read.

Banjo’s effort both inside and outside of the classroom was seen by all staff members. He enjoyed and listened to instructions during Zumba and Pittman Cup practice. Banjo showed respect and also encouraged his peers.

Congratulations, Banjo, on your approach to learning. You should feel very proud of yourself.

Here are some short recounts from the Blaze Aid dinner and Choir Workshop help two weeks ago.

‘I arrived at the Blaze Aid Dinner at 6.00pm and met Max and Pat. Pat has four kids and five dogs and Max has no kids and four dogs. Pat was married and Max is not married.

I had spaghetti bolognaise, shepherd’s pie and carrots and beans. We did a dance and the night was amazing’.

By Angus Haycocks

I had a fantastic time at the Blaze Aid Dinner on Monday night because I met new people. Two of their names were Kurt and Drew.

For dinner everyone had lamb pie, spaghetti bolognaise, beans and bread. For dessert we had a banana split with chocolate topping and

passion fruit.

Then it was time for the jokes. My favourite joke was ‘Where can you find the most cows? Moo York.’

I wish I could go there again.

By Dylan McLennan

On May 31 we went to Coolah to learn choir and meet students in Mrs. Frazer’s class. It was quite an exciting day.

When we arrived, we had to walk around for some time before we had found our way. We said good bye to the boys before joining in a dance warm up. One of the songs I was excited to hear due to the fact that it was stuck in my head earlier that day and I wanted to know its title so I could play it more.

When we had finished dancing to the songs we got out water bottle and pencil case before getting into a line and following Mrs. Frazer’s class into their class room where we sat on the floor.

When it was our time to join in the choir, I learnt a lot about singing and had fun.

By Rachel Bibby

I had an amazing time going to Coolah on Wednesday. We went in two cars. When we got there we danced to some music and after that we went to Miss Frazer’s class where we sat down next to her students.

We then went to the choir. We clapped our hands to a few beats and the teacher tried to trick us by doing different claps. Then we sang a song. The teacher partnered people up to hear their voices.

I enjoyed the morning at Coolah Central.

OI FROG!

Last Friday, all students listened to this hilarious story about a cat who tries to make a frog sit on a log but he didn’t want to. The book tells of a variety of animals and what they are allowed to sit on (all need to rhyme with the animal).

Page 10: MERRIWA Ringer · most. Luckily I bought my sheepskin ugg boots with me. I stayed for the Festival of the Fleeces last weekend and I wasn’t disappointed. What a fantastic community

Merriwa RingerPage 10

After a class discussion, students formed groups to further chat about finding rhyming words to match different animals not mentioned in the story.

Some of the words discovered by the students included:

• Geese - Greece, fleece, police• Cranes - planes, Haynes, lanes, manes, trains• Deers - ears, beers

After these discussions, students read their words aloud and were asked to select one to write and illustrate for the class book. The pages below are some samples of these writings.

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DISCOVERY DAY

Our Year 5 and 6 students are excited about this upcoming day on Thursday. The activities have been sent through and look highly engaging and full of great problem solving.

We look forward to sharing their day with you in next week’s newsletter.

Rotary“THE PARTY’S OVER!”

The Festival of the Fleeces goes from success to success. I quote the report from our our club’s secretary....

Our club, by sunset Saturday, a group of people with tired knees, backs, feet etc, after a huge pre-dawn till late afternoon effort at our barbecue, feeling the satisfaction which comes from a great mutual effort, which produced successful results for our club and thus also our community.

Our thanks to the many who came along to support us. As one of the many working at the stall, I must say that the quality of the fare being served looked excellent.

A new dimension was added to this year’s effort with our club’s visitor, RASMUS from Denmark applying his butcher skills to assist us.

Congratulations to the Festival organising committee for a job well done.

9:36-10:8Today’s Gospel gives us an insight into Jesus’ self-understanding of his mission. While scholars debate the historicity of some aspects of the Gospels there is no doubt that Jesus did call disciples that he shared his own mission with them that he singled out twelve and that Jesus was involved in a ministry of teaching, healing and exorcism. With the evidence of this behaviour the next question to ask is, ‘What did it mean?”. Does this behaviour reveal what Jesus thought about his mission?

the Gospel offers importance clues. Jesus taught that God’s reign was about to break into history. As part of the preparation for this imminent event Jesus set about the restoration of Israel. At one time Israel was composed of twelve tribes but this single nation was divided and overrun by foreign nations. The singling out of twelve symbolises that Israel is once again to become whole and united. This focus on Israel is why at first the disciples are sent only to the Jews, and not to Gentiles or Samaritans. During Jesus’ time his ministry was primarily to Israel and only after the Resurrection did the disciples expand their mission to non-Jews. A reconstituted Israel is to be a source of blessing and salvation for everyone.

The crowds Jesus saw were ‘harassed and dejected. I suspect he would see the same today. We certainly do need labourers to speak and live out the Gospel values of hope, generosity, kindness and respect for self and others. But when you pray for labourers, do look into the mirror and see yourself! (from “Sundays Under the Southern Cross” by Mary Coloe PVBM)

Many thanks to those who supported the Guild by donating cakes and biscuits and sandwiches last weekend during the Festival, and also to Rosalie, Barbara and David for having the Church open so visitors could look and admire.

EWE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP IN MERRIWA

Sheep and wool producers book in now to improve your skills in ewe productivity management at this one day workshop in Merriwa on June 21 hosted by Hunter Local Land Services.

LLS Senior Land Services Officer, Adam Bush said the hands-on workshop funded through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme would assist landholders to improve the health, productivity and profitability of their sheep enterprise.

“The Lifetime Wool Research Project acknowledges ewes as the ‘engine room of the wool business’,” Mr Bush said.

“Producers can have a big impact on their overall bottom line through optimum preparation of ewes for joining ensuring the lifetime performance of both the ewe and her offspring.”

Workshop facilitator, Geoff Duddy of Sheep Solutions will fine tune pasture assessment skills, feed budgeting and supplementary feeding strategies.

Mr Duddy emphasised farmers would gain a better understanding of how nutrition and animal condition impacts on a ewe’s performance and that of her progeny.

“If producers monitor a ewe’s condition score profile they can then predict ewe and lamb productivity and set feed targets for key periods during the reproductive cycle,” he said.

LLS Upper Hunter District Veterinarian, Jane Bennett will discuss local sheep health

CROWDS FLOCK TO ROSTO FESTIVAL OF THE FLEECES 2017

Around five thousand people enjoyed the ‘true blue’ atmosphere of the Merriwa Rosto Festival of the Fleeces over the long weekend.

The town was decorated in true blue fashion with Merriwa Pharmacy winning first prize in the window decorations competition, followed by Merriwa Sports Club and the newsagency News Xpress.

In its 27th year the festival continues to celebrate the importance of wool and the Upper Hunter’s rural and agricultural heritage.

The biggest event was on Saturday beginning with Kamilaroi elder Aunty Rosalind giving the Welcome to Country, with a hundreds market stalls and plenty of entertainment and displays to enjoy.

At noon two hundred Dohne Merino sheep in red socks lead the parade through town, followed by classic cars and machinery, businesses, school and community floats.

The top parade competition winners were the Merriwa Springtime Show float.

The crowd also enjoyed demonstrations of shearing, traditional blade shearing, and working sheep dog demonstrations, Roar Petting Zoo, Crocodile Adventures Reptile Show, vintage vehicle displays, entertainment by the Waste Wrappers Show and Sean Murphy,

gum boot throwing and ‘sheep poo’ spitting competitions, then team penning and the a fully choreographed fireworks finale by Ka Boom at the Merriwa Showground.

The high jump competition for big dogs was won by Tatar with a leap of 2.22 metres and Milo won the smaller dog competition clearing one metre.

In the Hanging of the Quilts raffle, first prize was won by Lisa Green and second prize went to Debbie Hayden. In the viewers’ choice competition most votes went to Julie Cooper’s big earthmoving machinery quilt with Shirley Hunt coming in second for the candlewicked quilt.

The opening event on Friday night at the Merriwa RSL was a great success attracting one hundred people. It was officially opened by the Land Sydney Royal Showgirl 2017 Maisie Morrow and there were performances by vocalist Victoria Bolonino and Everyday People.

The recipient of the Festival Pam Powers Award for 2017 went to Richard Magner, a dedicated member of the Festival organising committee who with his family supports many Merriwa community events. The award is presented in memory of Pam Power, mayor of the former Merriwa Shire Council, and one of the founders of the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces in 1990.

The major festival raffle was announced at the opening night event and won by Jane Callinan, second prize going to Chloe Leake, and third to Ross Bishop.

On Sunday morning, nearly 100 people attended the Bush Poets Breakfast compered and judged by Ellerston grazier and bush poet Tim McLoughlin. First prize for Best Original Poem went to Wendy Sedden and second prize for nest presentation of someone else’s poem to Rhonda Tallmarsh. Encouragement awards went to Alan Ryan, Caroline Maxfield, Rick Wright and Karina McLoughlan.

Chair of the Festival of the Fleeces Committee, Councillor Ron Campbell said the organising committee had done a great job bringing together a variety of family-friendly activities and entertainment.

“Monies raised from the Festival are donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the Merriwa Volunteer Rescue Association who provide essential services in the region,” Cr Campbell said.

“Thanks to all the supporters and sponsors.”

against Denman.

Old boys kicked off at 2.00pm, with Merriwa Magpies defeating Denman. It was a good game to watch, most of the old boys still have a lot skill that could possibly be used to play in our comp this year.

League tag kicked off at 3.00pm, the girls went out hard wanting to win at our home ground. We played well as a team, with some great balls from one another to help us over the line.

We even had comments made from spectators asking if we got bored scoring so many tries. My answer is no, we love adding numbers to the board in our favour. The end result was 70-0.

Great job, girls. See you all at training on Tuesday and Thursday night.

Players Player: Maddilyn Blackadder

Reserve Grade kicked off at 4.00pm.

The boys played hard for a lot of the game but weren’t able to defeat Denman.

Some blokes hit up well but weren’t able to continuously do it to get through Denman’s defensive line. Tackling is my highlight, I enjoy watching a good tackle made by Merriwa, especially when it takes the opposition down with a little wind knocked out of them or right around the legs to stop them in their tracks.

Merriwa went down 28-10.

Bad luck, boys.

Players Player: Jay-me Taylor
