“I’VE LOVED READING ALL MY LIFE”

How inspirational is John Wayne. Over the last two Thursdays all the Years 6 student (going on to Year 7) that will be joining us on the Secondary Campus next year have been experiencing many similarly inspirational activities. The aim is to prepare everyone for all the learning opportunities that the next stage of their education will provide.

At this point the two most inspirational activities has been a maths challenge which inspired everyone to learn their times tables and the often repeated message that a regular reading habit is important if you want to find school easy.

Among the other almost as inspiring lessons that have been had so far are: the English lesson which started with a rundown of the parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs see how many you can find in this text) but ended with an overview of the origins of the English language in other languages such as Greek (otherwise known as ελληνικά, and no I cannot pronounce that). The careers lesson which showed us many of the directions an education can take you and to be

careful because some of the options could be taken over by new technologies soon. There was the TAS department which showed off making spinning tops for games and bento boxes for lunch. PE lessons which gave all the students a chance to show off their impressive athleticism and organisation skills for those who remembered to bring a change of clothes. The Agriculture plot was full of adventures meeting the animals and the experience of planting strawberries and mint to take home and in the library John Wayne helped out with some motivating quotes as the do and don’ts of using the library was explained.

The best part of transition is still to come. There will be history, art and my favourite subject science. If nobody gets blown up with excitement there will be a well earnt sausage sizzle lunch and conversation to finish.

Next year’s Year 7 have grown with confidence on every visit to the Secondary Campus. They have been both courteous and appreciative towards the teachers’ efforts. If this is the standard Year 7 maintains then the next six years will be inspirational.

STATE FINALS BOUND!

Congratulations to our Super 8 girls cricket team who recently went undefeated in Dubbo. These girls continue to dominate their opposition and will now head off to the state championships for the second year in a row. Thanks to the efforts of the parents who have assisted with transport over the past two years and congratulations to super coach Mr Grant and assistant coach Miss Rogers who have been instrumental in developing this impressive team. It is always wonderful to see our school do so well when we step up in inter-school competitions.

TRIVIA NIGHT

Last Saturday the P and C ran a trivia night fund raiser at the RSL. We learnt a variety of new facts including that the animal with the most teeth is a snail and that it took 2000 years to build the Great Wall of China. The night was a success with all teams playing in a wonderful spirit. Congratulations to team Whykickamoocow who were the champions of the evening. Thanks to Tory and Krichelle for their organisation and coordination of such an enjoyable evening. Hopefully we will see our P and C trivia nights continue to grow.

CAR PARKING

If you are dropping off or collecting children from school when school zones are active, please be reminded that it is against the law to park in a bus zone or no stopping zone. It is also very dangerous to stop on the school crossing or directly on either side, as it restricts visibility for children crossing the road and for vehicles using Mackenzie Street.

We have been very appreciative to notice the number of parents / carers who are using Cullingral Street (behind the school) to drop off and collect their children. Parking is not restricted here at any time, and there is much less congestion at the most busy times of the day.

We thank you for your understanding of and support in this matter.

NEXT ASSEMBLY

Our next Kindergarten-Year 6 assembly will be held on Friday, November 11, commencing at 2.00pm. The Year 4/5 class will be presenting an item that will recognise the importance of Remembrance Day, and awards and certificates will be presented. As always, parents, friends and community members are warmly invited to join us.

TRANSITION PROGRAMS

Both of the school’s transition programs have proved to be very successful this year. Year 6 students moving to the secondary campus in 2017 will participate in their final transition visit

today, whilst our youngest students have some more exciting visits to look forward on Tuesdays.

KINDERGARTEN TRANSITION

This Tuesday, our kindergarten students for 2017 arrived at school enthusiastic about the prospect of staying at school until lunch time. With so much more confidence, the students entered their classroom ready to complete their lessons. Once again the students spent the morning listening to story books and enjoyed participating in some craft activities.

At recess time, the students sat with their Year 4 and 5 ‘buddies’ who were taught where to sit under the COLA and then encouraged them to play games with all the ‘big school kids’. The ‘buddies’ were amazingly considerate and patient as they helped the new students to understand our school routines.

After recess, the students had the opportunity to demonstrate their number knowledge as they took part in their first Mathematics lesson. Students played counting games, started identifying basic

Secondary ReportVET FACULTY REPORT

The first three weeks of Term 4 have started with Year 12 commencing their last year of schooling and deciding on their priorities for study and possible pathways for their future.

Year 12 Business Services are working on Participate in Environmental Sustainable Work Practices and Tthe Contribute to Workplace Innovation competencies this term. It will be interesting to see what innovative ideas they co me up with to improve Merriwa Central School’s services to students.

Year 12 Careers have been busy updating their resumes with Year 11 achievements and work placements undertaken. We have also looked at the what the future of work looks like and careers that may not exist in the future and areas where job prospects may increase.

numerals and thoroughly enjoyed creating their own number monsters. After being so focused on their Mathematics, the class went outside for a quick PE game. They showed great cooperation and were able to stretch their legs before their parents came to collect them at the beginning of lunch time.

The new students and their parents should be proud of how independent the students are already. They thrived on being at school for a longer period of time this week and we look forward to seeing them at our next transition. The next transition will be Tuesday November 8 and students will attend from 9.00am until 1.30pm. Students will need to bring fruit, a drink bottle, recess food, lunch food and a hat.

OPEN GIRLS CRICKET

On Wednesday October 26 the Open Girls Cricket team represented Merriwa Central School at the T20blast Western Division Cricket Gala Day. The team consisted of eight students, Shai Blackadder, Maddilyn Blackadder, Elly Blackadder, Mackenzie Blackadder, Sarah Nairne, Tarnisha Winsor, Courtney Eveleigh and Alana Smith.

There were eight teams in the Open Girls division. Despite the hot weather the girls played consistently all day. Girls played against Gulargambone Central School in the final which was a nail bitter with a score of 110 runs to 99. Undefeated the whole day, the girls did a fantastic job, finishing up overall winners for the day. Next up, the girls will represent the Western Division and compete at the State Championships against schools from the Northern, Eastern and Southern divisions.

The girls should be commended for their excellent sportsmanship and encouragement of one another throughout the day. Special mention to Tarnisha who took out Catch of the Day, with an awesome catch against Dunedoo which shocked spectators and herself. Also to Courtney who secured the team a significant number of runs.

Congratulations to all the girls! Also thank you to Neville Blackadder who drove us out to Dubbo and watched for the day.

Year 10 Careers are currently working on the mandatory Board of Studies course All My Own Work which is required for enrolment in Stage 6 studies. Students have to complete modules on line and then undertake an online test.

Year 9 Careers have watched a video on resume writing, looked at some sample resumes and have begun to write their own resumes. Discussion about relevant work related skills and how to highlight those in a resume have occurred. Students are also thinking about who they may ask as a referee for their resume.

Industry Based Learning students have presented their Reflective Workplace Journals outlining how their first year as School Based Trainees went and the types of industry practices they have learnt about. It is interesting to read their comments and the feedback they have provided on the benefits of undertaking a traineeship while still at school.

I look forward to the rest of Term 4 which is shaping up to be very busy.

UPPER HUNTER BEEF BONANZA

Our last steer team event of the year was the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza at Scone on the October 21-23. The steer team travelled with our two steers, Nitro and Buddy to White Park Scone to compete in three days of competition.

Friday was the Waverley Station School Steer Competition, where Nitro was paraded in the Led section by Josie Bradley where he was awarded the blue ribbon in his class. Tarah Cox paraded him in the Secondary Parader’s competition and gained a Highly Commended.

Saturday was the Open Led section and parading classes for our 13 and 14’s. Whilst we did not gain any ribbons on this day, all competitors were fine representatives of the school and steer team and did a great job.

Sunday completed the event with the 15-18 years parader’s classes and a junior judging competition. Once again we were well represented by our steer team, however in stiff competition of around 800 students we were unsuccessful in gaining a position. In the junior judging competition Oliver Towell was successful in getting through to the oral section of the 14’s class and achieved a Highly Commended.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who supported the steer team this year, with transport and donations. I would particularly like to thank Mr Jackson and the Walker family for their donation of Buddy and assistance throughout the season, especially with transport of steers. Also thank you to the Clydsdale family for their assistance throughout the season, especially with transport of steers and students.

This season has been our longest and largest yet. We have had numerous successes and gained new skills and knowledge and had some wonderful experiences. As always it is bittersweet when the season ends and we look forward to a new season next year.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK- ANGUS HEYCOX

Student of the Week- Eleyce Davis

Eleyce has been awarded the Student of the Week from her work and behaviour last week. She has settled in very well into our school. Eleyce has a friendly and caring personality which

has allowed her to form positive friendships with our students and staff. She is enthusiastic to learn and enjoys challenging herself. Eleyce wrote a number of sentences with minimal support from a teacher. She has been looking forward to the Dubbo Zoo visit and said she felt really lucky to be going. It’s always nice when students are appreciative of the opportunities that our school provides and the hard work from the staff that goes into organising an excursion. Last week in maths Eleyce learnt more about 3D shapes, especially cubes and spheres.

She consistently follows our school rules and is always respectful to other students and staff members.

We feel very fortunate to have Eleyce join our school family and look forward to seeing her continue to grow in her learning.

Congratulations, Eleyce. You should feel very proud of the great contribution that you have already made to our school.

KINDER-YEAR 2 AT DUBBO ZOO

MY FULL DAY AT COOLAH CENTRAL

Written by James Bibby

On Wednesday I went to the Yallambee bus stop and got onto the bus. I was excited because it was my fourth time on a bus.

I was really excited because I was able to do science and I got to make toothpaste but it wasn’t useable. I think the ingredients were peroxide, dishwashing liquid, yeast and warm water. I put the ingredients into the bottle and it started to fizz, rise up and it started coming out of the top with the toothpaste.

We got to use microscopes to look at the plants and static electricity to bend water.

In English I had to write a letter to myself about anything. The teacher’s name was Mrs Riley. I thought it was really cool being a bigger classroom. The room was really quiet.

When I was playing dodge ball I managed to stay in for three whole rounds without getting hit. I was dodging well.

TOP MARKS ST JOSEPH’S SCHOOL MERRIWA

Over the last week teachers have been conducting the annual standardised testing program in English and Mathematics. The results are outstanding. Congratulations to students, teachers and parents for your collaborative efforts to achieve learning goals throughout the year.

The greatest learning growth has been in the Infants class where almost all of the students have achieved growth which is either at expected level or above for 12 months of learning. The collaborative classroom is working well! Students are working with 2 teachers all the time and for 2 days a week with 3 teachers and their individual needs are being met wonderfully well.

Stage 1 Arlia Parker and Lula Peebles

Stage 2 Helena Parker and Darcy Taaffe

Stage 3 Korey Halse and Olivia Collins

Parent participation in goal setting meetings and active engagement with these goals has been very significant this year as can be seen from the table below. Well done, the results are showing.

Save the date: Saturday July 1, 2017 will be our St Joseph’s Junior Campdraft and Fete day. As this is our one major fundraiser each year we ask you to keep it free so that you and your children can participate.

The Public Speaking school competition was held last week. We are very pleased to be able to announce our winners from each stage who went on the represent our school at regional level. The teachers noticed that the hard work being done in class with the 7 Steps of Writing Success program made a very positive difference to the presentation of speeches. Did you notice the “sizzling starts?”

Parent Maths sessions are back by popular demand. Miss Paige Farrow – our Maths champion is offering two, one hour Maths sessions for parents this term. Our Choose Maths night, held last term, highlighted to parents how much fun Maths can be and how good it is to be able to work mathematically with your kids.

How full is your bucket? I thought I would share this wall display from the Infants’ classroom. The children strive to be good friends to others and to take time to do and say nice things to others. What a great lesson for all!

Some helpful Parent learning articles from Parenting Ideas which the school subscribes to:

• Teach kids to problem solve: When parents solve all children’s problems we not only increase their dependency on adults but we teach them to be afraid of making mistakes.

• By Michael Grose - Australia’s No 1 parenting educator. This very useful article can be found in this week’s Newsletter.

• Are your children getting enough sleep? With the recommencing of daylight saving and summer sports we notice the children getting tired and irritable at school. Do you know that effective learning starts with a good night’s sleep?

• Sleep is an active phase of the learning process, which is why as parents the single most important thing we can do to help our kids be more effective learners is to ensure they get enough sleep. Jenny Brockis’ article in this week’s newsletter has some great ideas to help you manage this.

KINDER-YEAR 2 EXCURSION

Details for the excursion were finalised at the P and C meeting last week. Students will be travelling by bus to the Hunter Valley Zoo for the day. An information and permission note was sent home last week. The cost of the excursion is $12.00. This will cover entry to the zoo. The P and C have generously agreed to meet the cost of the bus. All notes and money need to be returned to school by Friday November 4.

END OF YEAR EXCURSION

The P and C are totally funding an excursion for all students at the end of the year. On Friday December 9, we are heading down to Little Bay at Port Stephens for a two hour surfing lesson. All students will participate in beach games and general surf safety. Students will then be given some surfing lessons that will cater for all abilities (and non-abilities) of swimming. Notes with further information will be sent home next week.

YEAR 3-4-5 NEWS

Our term is off to a flying start. Students have spent the first three working with Ms Borg. In literacy, we have been focussing on visual literacy, through a study of the book The Treasure Box by Margaret Wild. Over the next two weeks, students will look at focal points, framing, foreground and background. In maths, students have been focussing on fractions and decimals. All groups will be completing investigations based around their work on these concept areas. In HSIE, we are learning about Australian inventions. Students will be completing a research project on a chosen Australian invention. In computers, all groups have been learning about Coding using Studio Code. They have learnt how to put forward basic coding instructions to program a character to perform actions. They will extend this learning as they learn how to complete mazes and puzzles.

their proud advancement up the ranks! In Maths, both years have been very involved with their investigations; Kinder are applying a variety of numeracy concepts, including ordinal numbers, comparing size, and early multiplication and division, with a hands on approach, based on the classic fairy tale of ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’. Year 1 are immersed in designing their own towns, applying their knowledge of 2D shapes, 3D objects, position and directions. The new term has seen the start of an exciting Science unit, perfect for Spring/Summer, ‘Schoolyard Safari’, exploring our school grounds for the many interesting critters hiding in our gardens. Until swimming begins, sport time this term is for the students to learn the basics of team sports. We are currently playing modified T-ball, and then we’ll move onto Golf. As always all the children’s eagerness to participate is most rewarding. A big thank you to the parents who support their children to complete their homework, it really can make a difference to children’s reading levels, spelling and maths skills.

KINDER ORIENTATION

This week our Kindergarten Orientation children concentrated on learning the skills associated with— using Nice Talk, Saying Please and Thank You.

This was taught through the use of the storybook ‘ John Brown Rose and the Midnight Cat. To ensure the children grasp the concept they were also involved in role plays and craft activities based on this story.

Following recess the days of the week were revised as they were introduced last week, through reading the book ‘One Hundred Spiders the children looked at the numbers one to ten. To conclude this session a variety of number games were played and rhymes were shared.

Week 4 already, time is flying by.. that’s because we are having so much fun at Merriwa Activity Centre this term. You may have noticed that Merriwa Activity Centre and Pre-School now have chickens to care for. Thank you Courtney Martin, the kids love checking on them each afternoon feeding them our scraps and seeing how they have grown and are eagerly waiting for eggs.

Children have been enjoying lots of outdoor play with the warmer weather; football, softball and netball have been very popular with Emma the pro teaching us a few rules along the way.

Indoor time has consisted of drawings and paintings, as well as the all time favourite LEGO. There were a lot of fun and exciting creations as the children used their fine motor skills with the tiny pieces.

Next week Merriwa Activity Centre will start heading to the pool on Tuesday and Thursdaysto afternoon to cool down after a hard day at school. If you book your children in on these days make sure they have their swimmers and pool entry with them, also we need to make sure that a permission form is filled out before the day.

We will be starting our Christmas holiday program soon so if there is something in particular that your child is interested in and would like to see it on our program contact us and we will take it into consideration.

Merriwa Activity Centre will take a break closing on December 16 and reopening on January 3, 2017 opening Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday it’s not too early to book in now.

If you need an enrolment package call in and pick one up today or phone us on 6548 2083.

PEW REFLECTIONS

At the time of Jesus, the group most threatened by him would have been the Sadducees. These were the wealthier class of Jewish society who were members of the High Priestly families and so had great influence and religious power. Unlike the Pharisees, the Sadducees were far more conservative and believed only what was written in the Law of Moses, and did not allow for growth in theological understanding. In the case at issue today, they did not accept the concept of resurrection from the dead, which was a concept which developed quite late in Judaism, around 200 BCE. At this stage in the Gospel, Jesus is teaching within the temple, and the Sadducees put to him this ridiculous scenario in order to make fun of his teaching. They draw on the Jewish law that if a man dies without offspring, his widow must marry the man’s brother in order to preserve the lifeblood of his family. Jesus’ answer points out that those participating in the resurrection of the dead will not die, so there is no need to maintain their lifeblood through begetting children. He then challenges them to really listen to their Law, and be open to the truth it teaches about God.

Today’s Gospel asks us to check where we stand. Are we open to the idea that our knowledge of God can develop, grow and change? It’s not that God changes, but our human knowledge and insights can and do develop.

Committment to the truth requires an openness bigger than that shown by Sadducees.

From ‘Sundays under the Southern Cross” By Mary Coloe PBVM

They are available as single cards or packs of cards- I personally use a combination of the two!

Loretta CooperLast Sunday saw The Mens Foursome’s played, and the results were somewhat predictable, with the two on form players teaming up to take the title, David Taylor and Alex Kean showing the way with a comprehensive victory over the defending champions Max McNaught and Patrick Williams, whilst Rob Patterson and Andy Carrigan and Paul Murray and Trent Cooper bringing up the minor placings. On a rough and windy day, and over 27 holes the new champions combined well with some scorching drives and deft touches around the greens. Whilst Williams and McNaught could only watch the game slip away with some unforced errors, despite staging a late comeback it was to be too little to late, and thus the capitulation was complete. Andy Carrigan scored a ball on the fourth with a ntp, but no other highlights were recorded.

Next Week see’s The Mug of Mug’s stroke event, Saturday from 12.00pm, Hope to see all the qualified players there.

That’s it for this weeks report, hope you all backed a winner in the cup, as always any queries please call Patrick Williams on 0417 462 767.

SPORTS CLUB CHICKEN RAFFLES FRIDAY NIGHTS

The Merriwa Junior Rugby League and Netball Club will be running Friday night chook raffles from November 4 through the summer months at the Sports Club – make it a kids night out.

Why not come on down at 6.00pm for twilight bowls with all the family then join in the chook raffle, grab some chips from the restaurant and you’ll have had a great family night out.

As everyone is now aware the MJRL and N Club will be celebrating our 50th Year in 2017 and as such we need extra funds to make our weekend celebrations a memorable one. Bob Telfer, Andrew Jamieson and Murray Wright will run a chook raffle every Friday night to help raise these funds so now all we need is people to come on down to the club, and make the effort worthwhile for both organisers and patrons. One surprise draw each week will be an added bonus to the lucky winner. Which draw will the surprise bonus be in? A kids toy, a kids game, a book, a football or a mug .. what will it be?

WHAT: Chicken Raffle

WHEN: Commencing November 4 Every Friday night

WHERE: Merriwa Sports Club

TIME: 7.30pm after Twilight Bowls

FUNDS TO: 50 Year Celebration July 8-9, 2017.

We ask all community and members of the MJRL and N Club to support this fundraiser. Be at the club every Friday night, play twilight bowls then enjoy the excitement of a chook raffle. Bring the kids along and make a great fun Friday night for the whole family. See you all there for the first Chook Raffle on Friday November 4, 2016 at the Merriwa Sports Club.

Elaine Sparrow

What a way to kick off the season with a carnival straight up! 12 athletes travelled to Aberdeen on Sunday to compete against clubs from across the Zone including Aberdeen, Muswellbrook, Denman and Singleton.

Jackson Keane cleaned up in the 100m, shot put, 200m, triple and 1500m while little bro Dylan took to the track with gusto placing in all his events – great job boys! Newcomers to carnivals Braeden Halse, Morgan Bates, William and Thomas Luke all performed brilliantly in their respective age groups, bringing home medals and certificates for their outstanding efforts. Cody Bates delivered a killer performance in high jump, scissor kicking his way to first and placing first in 3 out of 5 events (WOW!!) while little brother Jai always with an infectious smile on his dial put on the pace in the 70m and 200m. Chad Booth brought home the bacon with an awesome well deserved medal for discus while Tommy received his first medal for athletics in the Tots. Not to be out done, big sister Grace delivered on the track and field – always performing as her name suggests with grace and pace…nice work Gracie, must have been tough amongst all those boys!! Jayden McPhie surprised himself and his proud mum winning the 70m, 100m and 400m – way to go Jayden!

Team captain Belinda Keane said it was an “Absolutely fabulous day. All Merriwa athletes competed with pride and determination with huge smiles on each and every one of them…” while coach, mum and registrar extraordinaire Mel Bates said she was “So very proud of the great behavior and sportsmanship shown by our team of 12.”

Our second night of training saw plenty of emerging stars on the track and field. Coach James Munro was impressed with the steely determination of Darcy Taaffe and great listening from Ben Patterson in the 200m and 400m while Steve Hourn and Andrew Luke were unanimously impressed with the great start made by Wills Mulligan in the discus. Brilliant job Wills. Belinda Keane and John Cronin (welcome back John!!) were delighted with the natural flair for high jump shown by Mikayla Telfer while James Hagley and Tash Taaffe sang high praise for Grace Campbell for showing increasing confidence and independence in the Tiny Tots.

Just a reminder, Mel Bates is chasing rego forms. You can lodge them online or pay by cash or cheque to Mel. If you would like to come and try Little As, its not too late! All welcome from 3 to 16 years. Training is Monday nights from 5.30pm at

Merriwa Touch Football ClubREF COURSE

We have had an email from Scone in relation to a refereeing course which we are hoping to get interested persons for. This is open for anyone playing in the senior competition or who currently referees any of the games. We hope to assist those interested. Remember that once you are ticketed, your game payment goes from $10.00 to $15.00.

Numbers are needed to order the course booklets and arrange numbers with David Casson as soon as we can.

At this point the sessions will be held on Tuesday November 15, Scone RSL - 6.00pm start. Those wishing to attend must complete an online component which reduces the time at the course. A copy of the certificate issued (takes a couple of hours) needs to be brought along. The courses generally cost $45.00.

A $20.00 deposit needs to be left to before booklets are ordered to indicate they will come, we get the documentation and they don’t show. If we can get 8-10 people then David would be happy to complete the course here in Merriwa.

Names need to be to us by November 5.
