PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Congratulations to our students who participated in the Kia-Ora Music Camp. I have heard fantastic reports from students and parents about the camp, and Friday night’s performance. Thank you to Miss Willis for her organisation of the excursion, and providing the opportunity for students to perform. Anzac Day This year the Fife Band has been asked to perform at the town Anzac Day march. Anzac Day falls two days before school returns in Term 2. It is really important that the school is represented at the march. All students from primary to secondary are invited to march with the school. In particular, Fife Band students Yr3-8 and the Student Representative Council. The 100 year anniversary of Anzac Day takes place in 2015. One of our students has the opportunity to travel to Anzac Cove to take place in the 100 year anniversary ceremony with a group of students representing schools in the Hunter. I am currently in discussion with the RSL about this fantastic opportunity, and the criteria for selection. Students meet with Shire Councillors Two of our students addressed Upper Hunter Shire Councillors at the progress meeting last week, Corey Clare and Matthew Orton. I have had several comments from people who attended the meeting about how well the boys represented themselves and the school. The councillors were so impressed by our students they granted $15000 towards the skate park project. Congratulations Corey and Matthew, an outstanding achievement. New Staff In the past two weeks new teachers have joined the secondary staff. Mr Aaron Creamer (Hospitality) joins us from Newcastle, and has a background as a trained chef. Miss Rebecca Hopkins (Visual Art) comes highly recommended and is also a Novocastrian. However rental accommodation is proving to be difficult for our new staff. If anyone is aware of

housing for rent please contact the secondary office. I would hate to see our new teachers forced to live away from town due to a rental shortage.

MERRIWA CENTRAL SCHOOL PRIMARY NEWS

SENIOR CITIZENS CONCERT

Four classes performed at the RSL Club on Friday before an appreciative audience of our senior citizens. Class 4/5 and Year 6 performed the poem “Our Bert” by Jim Haynes, which cheekily suggests that Bert Newton should be placed on the Australian coat of Arms as he truly is an icon of Australia!

Class 1/2 had the audience’s toes tapping as they performed the “Heel and Toe Polka” and Class K/1 performed a skit about a drumming dingo named Dan who gets the whole forest of animals to join in as he plays his drums.

We thoroughly enjoyed performing for our senior citizens and are very thankful for the donation which they made towards our school.

PRIMARY NEWS

The final two weeks of this Term will soon disappear in a blur of activities. This week we have enjoyed the return of Healthy Harold to our primary campus, Mrs McAlister and Miss Willis conducted a maths workshop for parents, we held parent/teacher interviews on Thursday afternoon after school and our K/1 class visited the pres-school to show just how far they have come since their first day of school just 9 weeks ago!

This week was the last week for Home Readers for the term. Please ensure that all home readers are returned before the end of the Term. There will be a special prize for the class who is first to return all of their home readers.

THE JORDAN WALLACE CREATIVITY

COMPETITION IS ON AGAIN!

To enter all you’ve got to do is to draw a picture of anything that you want, colour it in, be creative and do the best that you can. Then

hand it into your teacher. Don’t forget to make sure that your Name, Year and School are neatly printed on the back. There are 3 shields, 19 trophies and 19 medals to be won. Entries close 1 April 2011.

Next week is just as busy: Year 6 will visit the common to participate in Veg Watch: a program that looks at the plants which present themselves in the autumn and the challenges that these plants face in survival. Wednesday will be very exciting as we will be visited on the morning assembly by a representative of the Merriwa News agency who will announce the winner of our colouring in competition. After recess we will be involved in a Scripture Spectacular and then we will be visited by a brass band from. Thursday will be the day of our Easter Hat Parade. Each child will parade in their bonnet which they will have made at home as part of their homework for this week. The Easter raffle will be drawn at the parade, so please make sure that all of your tickets have been sold and the money and tickets are back at school by Wednesday 6 April. We will therefore have earned our Term One holidays which will commence on 9 April and continue until 28 April. Don’t forget that ANZAC Day falls within these holidays. All students who would like to participate in the ANZAC Day march need to meet Mr Noonan at 10.30am outside the door leading into the auditorium of the RSL Club. Students need to be in full school uniform as they are representing our school. The Fife Band will be performing during the march. During the holidays, please begin practising for our cross country carnival which will be held on Wednesday 4 May (Wednesday of Week 2 of the term). We are looking for parents who will be willing to help us with the running of the Cross Country. Students can start finding sponsors for the event so that they can earn points towards some great prizes.

PATTERN WRITING Year 4/5 students have completed some great “pattern writing” work as part of their study of the Paul Jennings story “Good Tip For Ghosts”. The children were directed to write a description using Paul’s passage as a model: “It was a huge tip with a large, muddy pond in the middle. I noticed a steer’s skull on a post in the water. There were flies everywhere, buzzing and crawling over the disgusting piles. Thousands of seagulls were following the bulldozer looking for rotten bits of food.” It was a little, abandoned town with a small glowing light in the distance. I noticed an old broken ute on the road near a shop. There were cobwebs and spiders everywhere, crawling and skiddling over the rusty metal. Thousands of bats were following the light looking for somewhere to hide.

Ben Keane Year 4 It was an old cellar with a large box in the centre. I noticed an object on a pole in the box. There were spiders everywhere, crawling and climbing on the walls. Hundreds of bugs were hovering around looking for places to hide.

Tori McNaught Year 4 It was an enormous dog yard with an old rusty shed in the middle. I noticed a small, fluffy dog on a lead in a kennel. There were flies everywhere, buzzing and crawling over the scattered dog food. Hundreds of birds were finding some shade so they could take a rest.

Tarah Cox Year 5

It was a little town with small houses all around. I noticed a young girl up in a tall gum tree in the park. There were birds everywhere, cheeping and chirping amongst the trees. Thousands of ants were crawling around trying to collect food for the upcoming storm.

KIA-ORA MUSIC CAMP

M e r r i w a C e n t r a l School had 11 students from Years 3 to 7 attend a three day music camp called Kia

Ora, in Scone. The students participated in African drumming and singing workshops. The students were privileged to be taught African drumming by two highly regarded African drummers from Africa, called Mohamed Bangoura and Sibo Bangoura along with Blair Greenberg from Sydney. The drumming tested our coordination and rhythm skills. At times it was challenging but we really enjoyed every minute of it thanks to our great drumming tutors.

During our choir workshops we sang a variety of songs. Our singing tutor was the talented Paul Jarman with William Brown as the accompanist. The students learnt and sang three songs ‘Ore He Mi Jeckajo’ a Nigerian folk song and ‘We Know’ which was composed by a student at the camp, Alisha Brown. We also sang a song composed by Paul Jarman called ‘Sailing Home’ which was inspired by Jessica Watson and her solo sail around the world.

After three days of hard work the students got to showcase what they had learnt at the Kia Ora concert which was held on Friday night. I was lucky to sit and watch the concert. The talent of all students was amazing but I can say the African Drumming appeared to be one of the most enjoyed events of the night by students and the audience.

We would like to thank Scone High School SRC (student representative council) for supplying us with a fantastic sausage sizzle on Friday afternoon, between the workshops ending and the concert beginning. This filled everyone’s tummies and gave us energy to keep us going for the concert.

P & C

Meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7-00pm in the Merriwa RSL Club

MERRIWA CENTRAL SCHOOL

Merriwa Central School P&C will be holding their next meeting on Wednesday 6 April in the Fletcher Room at Merriwa RSL Club starting at 7pm. At the AGM in March two extremely important positions were left unfilled Treasurer Canteen Treasurer These two positions are vital to the running of your P&C and need to be filled ASAP. Currently the two ladies who held these positions last year are keeping things up to date so who-ever takes on the position will not feel overwhelmed by having to spend time catching up on the last few months.

ENGLISH FACULTY NEWS Plagiarism continues to be a concern in assessment tasks. If students plagarise in assessment tasks, they will receive a zero grade. Copying and pasting and then changing a few words in the text, is still plagiarism. Senior students have all completed and signed off on the All My Own Work modules so have a clear idea of the importance of intellectual integrity. The same rules apply for junior students. Competitions Entries for Public Speaking Competitions including the Muswellbrook Eisteddfod and the State Competitions have been entered and we look forward to seeing our students excel in this area once more. All ICAS competition entries have been entered as well. Year 7 Year 7 are all working brilliantly in English and have moved on from persuasive texts to autobiography. They are learning more about themselves and Roald Dahl every lesson.

Year 8 Year 8 are currently working through a poetry unit where they will be studying and writing Ballads, Odes and Sonnets. They have begun to read and deconstruct well known ballads e.g. The Man From Snowy River, to identify the specific features of a ballad before they write their own.

Year 10 In English year 10 are studying the poetry of performance poet Kimonos. They have written some outstanding poems about their childhood modelled on his stream of consciousness style. In History they are about to begin a unit on Aboriginal Rights.

Seniors should now be in full flight preparing and studying for the all important half yearly exams. They should all be using the hints tips and techniques from Mr Johnston’s Study Skills seminar, writing for extended periods of time and putting in at least three hours study a night. With effort comes success.

Robyn Dorney

We also have some other positions which need to be filled - a full list of these positions will be sent home with your children prior to this meeting.

We will also be discussing the viability of the Primary Canteen. Due to the lack of interest from parents to volunteer to run the canteen we are very close to closing the canteen at the Primary site. If you do not want your children to go without this service, I invite you to come along to the meeting to voice your opinion on this matter as a decision will be made at this meeting.

Senior Citizens Assembly It was wonderful to see such a gathering of people on Friday to help us celebrate Seniors Week. We hope everyone enjoyed the delicious lunch, generously supplied by our fantastic P&C, and our afternoon of entertainment provided by our terrific students. It is always lovely to have guest from our community and wider community come and join us. At the Assembly the children were presented with their Swimming Certificates and all given a special award for an area in school that they have been showing strength in. Awards were also given to students who had completed 20 nights of reading at home and for birthdays that have been or are creeping up slowly. the ‘Photos Gallery’ at the back of this newsletter. Books In Homes At our special assembly on Friday the children were presented with a very special gift from the organisation ‘Books in Homes’. Books in Homes Australia is a non-profit organisation that helps provide books to children to help improve their literacy skills and to develop and maintain their love for reading. They have been running since 2001 and have successfully delivered more than 950,000 quality books of choice to more than 281 schools. The program operates by the school receiving a box of books. The children get to view the books and choose 4 of their favourite books (the children will only receive 3 of their 4 choices). The school gets to keep the box of books for their library. Very quickly the school receives back the 3 books for every child and a library bag for each child’s books to go home in. Every child’s book, when back at school, will have a label put onto the front cover to say who the book belongs to. This process will happen 3 times in a year, once in first term, second term and fourth term. Meaning that the children will receive 9 brand new books to take home and cherish. We thank the sponsor of this organisation very much, they remain anonymous, and promise them that the children have received much delight in being presented with their first lot of books. Please see our photos in our photo gallery. Photo Gallery

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

The children in Kindergarten have settled in nicely to school life at St Joseph’s Merriwa. We have learnt so many sounds and the actions associated with them this term that we can now spell out whole words using our actions for all the letters. We were all very excited to start our homework a few weeks ago. We have all been reading at home and get very excited when we change our home readers over to discover the new book we will read.

In Maths we have been learning about 3D shapes. We used a variety of 3D shapes to construct robots. We then described our robot and the 3D shapes it consisted of. We have also been learning about length and have become very good at identifying objects which are short and long.

In Science we have been looking at what materials objects are made of. We have been i n v e s t i g a t i n g various materials a n d t h e i r suitabi l i ty for different things. We carried out an experiment to observe the effect of water on materials. We are in the process of determining the

best materials to make an outdoor mobile. There are a couple hanging in the trees in our playground.

In Creative Arts we have had the chance to look at artworks by Andy Warhol, Matisse and Picasso to show us the way different Artists express facial characteristics. We have then used the inspiration gained from viewing these to create our own beautiful works of art which are on display in our classroom.

We are getting very good at Essential Moves and have learnt to master the various exercises involved.

We love using the Smart board in class especially when we get to interact with it. We have discovered some great Science and Maths activities on it.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT FOR MARCH 2011 “It’s a Mad World” On Wednesday parents, children and staff alike all enjoyed a fabulous performance by Per Westman. It was wonderful to see so many people laughing and purely entertained by the antics of Per. The children absolutely loved it! I can see that it will be part of the children’s play for some time yet. You’d best pack up those plates and get some plastic ones out! Humour, balance, twirling plates, strength, juggling, creative and expressive use of his body, and simply captivating his audience were some of Per’s skills we shared on the day. Laughter was certainly in no short supply!

Family Portraits Keep the morning of Saturday 2 April free if you would like to book a sitting with a great photographer for a family portrait. (Jodie Smith)

Only $20 secures a booking and then parents can choose to purchase further shots. If the weather is with us, we hope we may try some outdoor shots this year. What better gift for Mum for Mothers’ Day? Ring us today. Only today and tomorrow left to book. Policy Review The following policy updates were passed at the monthly Committee meeting: Arrival and Departure, Policy Review, Nutrition, No Smoking and Non-Consumption of Alcohol. Parents are reminded that a lever arch folder exists at the sign on desk, where policies are freely available. We are currently in the process of trying to keep these as current s possible. Current parents may request a copy of the updated Nutrition Policy, it’s just in the process of being typed up. Decisions on this were made with input from a dietician, parental feedback and our regulations in mind. Inservice Training Last week, I attended a training session in Newcastle on the Early Years Learning Framework, and how it relates to the new upcoming National Quality Standards. It was reassuring to know that we are definitely on the right track, and with continuous reflection, meeting and discussion with staff and input from parents that we are well on the way to keeping up to date with these new compulsory documents. One of the goals is to improve parents knowledge of children’s learning. Talk for Parents: Head Lice We recently held an interesting information night for parents on Head Lice – facts and fiction, and have passed on our policy draft for Robert Smith, our local Pharmacist to input into. We thank Robert for his involvement and remind all parents that help is at hand with sound advice on this topic at any time. Question of the Month This year, we are just beginning a new process where we pose a “Question of the Month” to all parents. It will only take but a minute of your

time, and we are dependent upon ongoing feedback in order to meet requirements for accreditation. We always have spares on hand at the sign on desk, so just ask if you can’t find one and fill it out on drop off or collection. Alternatively, send along your comment in your child’s lunch box. We ask that March’s question be returned to the gold box on the sign on desk by the end of the month. Many thanks in anticipation of your involvement. We look forward to implementing your feedback. A copy of the learning outcomes for EYLF is on display just under the notice board. Don’t forget to return your “Question of the month.” Why not do it today, and pack it into your child’s lunch box. We will be doing our best to implement your responses. If lost, please ask and we’ll give you another. Skin Protection Reminder As we recently reminded families in the Ringer, we are noticing that we are needing to ask lots of parents to provide a sunsafe hat for outdoor play. The reason that caps are not suitable is that they really do not provide adequate coverage for ears, face and neck. I’m sure we all know someone with skin cancers, so let’s all do our best to promote safe outdoor play for our next generation. Sun safety has recently been part of our discussion with groups of children, so please leave those caps in the drawer and get sun safe! We’ve also been talking about how you can still get sunburnt on a cloudy day. “I Belong” We have put the challenge out to families to come up with a simple family page of

photographs (or if this is a bit tricky, simply written info will be fine) to add the their child’s Portfolio. We are acknowledging all children’s very important sense of belonging to their family, and are eagerly awaiting a page that we can add to your child’s Portfolio and talk with them about it. I cannot stress how important the children feel who already have brought one in from home. They are absolutely so excited. So far the count is only 4 children, so here’s a weekend project to do with and for your child. Our Night Sky Has your child taken you by the hand yet to show you a new feature of their classroom that looks just like the night sky? The children’s response has been amazing! This is part of showing how all children belong at pre-school, and they are taking great delight in finding their own faces, and faces of friends and teachers. We are also learning a little song, which is posted in this area to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle.

Welcome to Ebony McConnell We are very pleased to welcome Ebony to our team. Ebony will be job sharing with Kay Taylor to keep the Pre-school looking clean and neat. Many thank you's to Julie Carberry who had previously taken on this role. All of her efforts ( and Kay’s too) are so very much appreciated. The Pre-school is always so fresh and clean, and this is appreciated, I’m sure, by all who use it. We also welcome Ebony and Kylie Payne to our Child Care casuals list.

Street Stall – Thank You Everyone at MAC would like to express their gratitude to everyone involved in the Election day street stall/sausage sizzle. So many people contributed, making the event such a huge success. Thank you to the organisers, (Committee, staff and parents), the people who donated goods to sell, those who manned the stall and the BBQ and, of course, the customers. We hope you enjoyed your purchases.

Pupil Free Day Wednesday of last week was St Joseph’s pupil free day and MAC was “open for business” all day. We had quite a few children arrive around 8.30am, all set to have a fun filled day..and we did not disappoint them. The children did lots of crafts, including making a wind sock and hand puppets. We also had a yummy sausage sizzle for lunch. Tiara showed us how to make her version of Pigs in Blankets which is devon filled with mashed potato – yum! At 3pm we said farewell to a couple of our children and we picked up our central school friends. It was such a lovely afternoon we decided to pack up our afternoon tea and head to the park. The children got to run around with their wind socks, which looked so beautiful with their streamers flowing in the breeze. Our afternoon tea was fruit and the Pigs in Blankets that Tiara made for us. Everyone enjoyed them so much we might just have them again soon.

April Holidays Vacation time is getting closer. We have been busy putting together another exciting program. Our excursion this April will be to Fighter World at Williamtown. We also have another special treat planned for the same day but we won’t give the secret away just yet. Watch this space!!

Another new activity for the children will be visiting Lenore Taylors sewing shop. Mrs Taylor will be assisting the children to make a library/pyjama bag. What a fun and useful craft!

As usual, during vacation care we will be having a special theme food day. This time around it is an American Diner lunch. The children will have a choice of hamburgers or hot dogs plus hot chips and a milk shake. The children are involved in the preparation and serving of the food. We are sure this will appeal to most of our MAC children.

First Aid Course Thank you for your interest in the first aid course. We now have enough people to ensure the trainer will come to Merriwa to hold the course. Those who have their name down will be contacted shortly with instructions on payment, venue etc.

INTRODUCTION OF EXCLUSION ZONES WELCOMED BY THOROUGHBRED

BREEDERS

The Labor Government’s commitment to introduce exclusion zones to protect valuable industries, such as the Hunter Valley’s Thoroughbred Breeding Industry, has been welcomed by the Thoroughbred Breeders of the Hunter Valley.

Ms Georgopoulos, spokeswoman for the Thoroughbred Breeders of the Hunter Valley said “It is encouraging to see that the threat posed by mining industries to the future viability of our industry is finally being recognised and that the Labor Government has committed to permanently protecting valuable agricultural industries, such as Australia’s Thoroughbred Breeding Industry, from mining and extraction activities”. “We also welcome the Government’s commitment to ban exploration activities on waterways adjoining national parks and to wind back exploration licences from other sensitive areas. Securing our waterways and water quality is of paramount importance to our industry and to other valuable agricultural industries. Banning exploration activities in waterways adjoining national parks and in other sensitive areas – such as our prime agricultural lands and valuable agricultural industries – is long overdue ” Ms Georgopoulos said.

The Coalition has committed to developing strategic land use plans to identify and define land use priorities ‐ including through the use of enhanced buffer zones and “ring fencing”. We will now be seeking the Coalition's assurance that they will commit to the introduction of exclusion zones. We also seek the assurances of both parties that they will not make decisions on new exploration or mining licences surrounding Thoroughbred Breeding operations until these exclusion zones have been introduced” Ms Georgopoulos said "What is most important now is that the incoming Government acts immediately to introduce exclusion zones to protect our valuable agricultural assets and industries and to restore balance and investment certainty to our region. Too much time has been wasted already. Urgent action is required if our future is to be secured.” The Hunter Valley’s Thoroughbred Breeding Industry is a multi‐billion dollar, world renowned industry. It has the second highest concentration of thoroughbred studs in the world behind Kentucky in the USA. It is one of three International Centres of Thoroughbred Breeding Excellence in the world (alongside Kentucky in the USA and Newmarket in the UK). It is Australia’s largest producer and exporter of thoroughbred horses. It contributes over $5 billion per annum to the national economy and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs across Australia.

MERRIWA HARDWARE Ah yes, here we are again, ready to dribble on a bit more. Only problem being the total blank that I've got right now. Have coffee in hand, so all should come good sooner or later. We went to yet another hardware meeting last week and discussed some of the changes in not just the hardware industry, but retail in general. It's no wonder I've got a crappy memory, with all of this stuff that I'm supposed to remember.....impossible. Anyway, back to the normal? gibbering! We have a few Absco garden sheds in stock that we will have on special for a very limited time as an introductory offer. There are four shed sizes on offer and you can save anywhere from $100.00 to $230.00. Massive savings! Shed sizes available are; 1.52w x 0.78d x 1.52h, normally $299- now

$199.00. 2.26w x 0.78d x 1.95h, normally $469- now

$299.00. 2.26w x 1.52d x 1.95h, normally $629- now

$399.00. 3.00w x 2.26d x 2.00h, normally $679- now

$499.00

These sheds are Australian made and have the snaptite assembly, they also come with a 20 year warranty. Available in zincalume only These shed will be available at these prices for one week only. Finishes on Saturday 9 April 2011. We have plenty of mouse traps in stock to do battle with those pesky rodents. Even have a few sticky traps plus some more cages as well. We also received a swag of seedlings recently. There are plenty of flower and vegie seedlings at the moment as well as a few herbs. So get in quick, first in best dressed! Now is a good time to look at improving the soil in your vegie patch. Dig in some compost and other bits and pieces and pull out anything that needs to go. Did you know that we have the 200L wheelie bins in stock for only $95.00? We also have a new range of Lion torches available. One of them has a high performance 3 watt LED and is absolutely brilliant. Small torch, big output. Well that's all for this week, I've come back to a compete blank again! Did you know? The Chow and the Chinese Shar-Pei are the only dogs that have black tongues.

DR STOKES We continue to have lots of very successful weight losses. Congratulations to Robyn Redman who has now lost 16kg. This is a wonderful achievement and will make a major difference to her future health. The average person has absolutely no need of appetite suppressant tablets, personal trainers or gastric banding or bypass operations or any other of the heavily marketed programmes. After all, you have complete control over what you put in your mouth. When you decide that you want to lose weight more than you wish to retain bad habits of eating, you can do it for yourself. No one can do it for you but everyone is capable of doing it for themselves. We will be starting our flu injections in April. If possible book in for Thursdays when Merrie, our nurse is on. Other times are fine, though, if this day does not suit you.

CYBER BULLYING What is Cyber-bullying? Cyber-bulling is an intentional, repeated behaviour by an individual or group to cause distress or undue pressure to others using technology. Today's technology allows children to communicate instantly with others in both positive and negative ways. Cyber-bullying includes all communications that seek to threaten, humiliate, intimidate, control or put another person or persons down. How does cyber-bullying work? Cyber-bullying can be carried out through an internet service such as: email chat room discussion group or forum instant messaging social networking websites such as Bebo,

Facebook, MySpace or YouTube. Cyber-bulling can also include bullying through mobile phones by: text and picture messaging video clips phone calls. Cyber-bullies can flame (repeatedly leave negative messages), harass, exclude or cyberstalk victims using these technologies.

The above extracts are taken from the NSW Department of Education website. Sadly as parents we have had first hand experience of cyber bullying and the effects that it can have on the person being bullied and the effects on other family members and friends. Last week we had a concerned community member show us a FaceBook page where one of our children was being repeatedly attacked by peers, peers that attend the same school. As parents we now spend time reading our children's FaceBook pages checking that things are okay and to try and ensure that another incident such as that of last week never happens again. While we have taken this upon ourselves to try and protect our own children we would like to suggest that other parents do the same as it maybe your child next time or maybe it already is! One last thing on this matter is to those who have caused all this stress and pain to our family - just take a minute to think about who else maybe reading what you write on FaceBook - they are not just your peers but also members of the wider community that you live and work in. I understand that comments can be deleted, but they can also be printed as a hard copy.

WOOLBROOK RURAL INDUSTRIES

Since the outcome of the Great War was to a considerable extent decided by sea power, the evolution of warships between (say) 1850 and 1914 is relevant. During this period they underwent great change, including the invention of the moveable (rotating) gun turret, the change from sail to steam (including firing boilers with oil rather than coal, and the introduction of steam turbines), and greatly improved naval artillery. Also the change from wooden ships to steel, initially referred to as “iron clads” because the first ones were simply wooden ships clad with iron. In Nelson’s day naval guns were quite crude with limited range, but capable of enormous fire power since the big ships, (the “line-of-battle ships”, later known simply as “battleships”), carried rows of guns in decks on each side, a hundred or more guns in total. The headroom in the gun decks was as little as five feet, and when in action the gun ports were opened, the guns rolled up to and fired through them, then wheeled back in for reloading. Often ships sailed “in line-of-battle” close to each other, sometimes within metres, and a broadside, if it hit, caused great carnage not only from the charge itself but also flying wooden splinters. Because the guns were fixed (with the exception of a few small types, e.g. “carronades), the whole ship had to be aimed, which required considerable skill on the part of the ships’ captains and the overall Admiral in charge, if the battle were to be won. Such manoeuvring became easier with steam, but some of the old tactics still stood the test of time. An effective one, if successful, was to “cross the tee”. If the enemy was approaching in line-of-battle an admiral might attempt to sail his fleet across their line (rather than parallel to it) thus forming a T so the enemy ships could be blasted with one broadside after another from his ships while incurring minimum risk of return fire. This tactic, which required particular skill with sailing ships, did not disappear with the introduction of more manoeuvrable steam warships, still being effective even after moveable gun turrets were introduced, because every gun on a ship could be brought to bear broadside against an enemy still handicapped as in days of sail. In fact the British twice “crossed the tee” at the battle of Jutland (May 1916), but with limited success because they did not press home their advantage.

The invention of the moveable gun turret, perhaps first used in crude form during the American civil war, was obviously a huge improvement because then guns could be individually aimed. This was coupled with rapid progress in the guns themselves (including rifling), which by 1914 could hurl a fourteen inch shell up to twenty miles with remarkable accuracy, the latter particularly so if it was a German shell as they demonstrated superior accuracy at Jutland. By 1914 sail had given way to a combination of steam and sail then steam alone, and the British (but not the Germans) had gone to burning oil rather than coal, the German decision probably because they decided (correctly) that they would have difficulty procuring oil if at war with Britain, but would have plenty of home produced coal. It was also claimed that the German coal bunkers gave extra protection against damage. Perhaps the greatest change was about 1900 when Admiral Lord Fisher had a completely new type of capital ship designed and built, HMS Dreadnought. It was the first modern day battleship, all steel, heavily armoured, fast for its day, powered by oil fired turbines, and armed with twelve inch guns (i.e. they fired a shell with a twelve inch diameter). It was far ahead of anything else afloat, the world powers immediately recognised this, and soon they were all building what were initially called “dreadnoughts”. So quickly were they improved in size, speed, armour and fire power that the original dreadnought was obsolete within a few years and the day of the battleship had arrived as the superpowers (including the USA, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Russia and others) built 50 or more enormously expensive battleships up till about 1944. However, their day was soon over as they held sway for no more than about forty years depending on what date naval historians choose for their demise. I suggest the Battle of Midway (May 1942), a critical engagement fought between America and Japan, the Americans winning both strategic and tactical victories. The entire action was fought by aircraft, the opponents’ ships never coming within sight of each other. The only major action ever fought between capital ships, including the lighter, faster, heavily armed but less heavily armoured battle cruisers, was Jutland. Apart from that about their only use was for shore bombardment and as antiaircraft

gun platforms in the Pacific, where they were equipped with large numbers of these weapons to help protect their now precious replacement, aircraft carriers. However it is interesting that battleships still have a legacy. Prior to the Great War the naval powers were paranoid about the supposed potential of small torpedo boats against dreadnoughts, so designed fast comparatively lightly armed ships to counter them, and called them “torpedo boat destroyers”. The threat from torpedo boats turned out to be illusory, however “destroyers” proved to be very useful ships in their own right, particularly against submarines, they are still valuable today, and continue as an indispensable part of all fleets.

OUTWITTING THE "WHITE PLAGUE" Outwitting the "White Plague" is one of the chapter headings in the book Smallpox, Syphilis and Salvation by Sheryl Persson in which she documents some of the major medical breakthroughs that changed our world. The White Plague was the name given to the disease we now know as tuberculosis or simply TB; so called because its sufferers appeared so pale, and this symptom was seen as being associated with artistic sensitivity. The talented and creative were amongst its victims - artists, writers, musicians and scientists. However TB was never a disease of the rich and famous. It was always more likely to be spread amongst the poor and malnourished. About a third of all deaths in London during the first 40 years of the 19th century were due to TB. World wide it still kills around two million people every year. "Consumption" was another word used to describe TB; because those affected seemed to waste away, apparently consumed from within. The name tuberculosis came in to use in the 1830s and some 50 years later, on 24 March 1882, German physician Robert Koch announced the discovery of the organism which causes tuberculosis. It was for this discovery that Robert Koch was awarded the Nobel Prize some 20 years later. Prior to Koch’s work little was understood about TB. Theories of the day attributed the disease to contaminated water, air and soil or to “social causes” and immoral practices. The later realisation that TB was contagious led to the strategy of confinement in patients’ homes, hospitals or purpose built sanatoriums. The onset of effective drug therapy signalled the end of the sanatoriums and TB rates continued to decline; however, 15 years ago the World Health Organization (WHO) declared TB once again a global health emergency. Now TB, together with HIV/AIDS and malaria is one of three leading causes of death worldwide from infectious disease. About 2 billion people, a third of the world’s population, are infected with TB. The number

of new cases each year is estimated at 8 million. As a percentage of the population, rates of TB are highest in sub-Saharan Africa, however, in absolute terms the highest number of TB cases is in Asia. Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Philippines account for about half of all cases. Importantly from Australia’s perspective, 60% of the global burden of TB occurs in our near neighbours in South-East Asia and the Western Pacific. TB is curable; however, speedy diagnosis and regular, long term drug therapy is essential. World TB Day, 24 March, is a reminder that TB is not a vanishing disease. While TB can affect any organ in the body, pulmonary tuberculosis (that is: affecting the lungs) is by far the most common form; and it is this form of the disease which is so easily transmitted from person to person. It is spread when people with active pulmonary tuberculosis cough or sneeze “droplets” containing the so-called mycobacteria. In poorly ventilated, enclosed environments the micro-organisms can remain airborne for several hours. Pulmonary TB patients, depending on the stage of infection, usually present with the following symptoms: a cough of more than 2 weeks duration, night sweats, fever, weight loss and loss of appetite, fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain and in later stages, coughing up blood. These symptoms are non-specific – they can be indicative of a number of conditions; but the possibility of TB should always be considered in people at high risk: those in contact with TB cases (health-care workers, those with reduced immunity – HIV, renal failure, diabetes – those in or returning from countries with a high incidence of TB, and those with high socio-economic risk factors – people born in countries with high TB burden and indigenous Australians). including activity sheets, reference books, ID guides, binoculars, and survey equipment.

On Wednesday Cassilis students collected samples for their site’s herbarium, which featured kangaroo grass, flea bane, blue bells, penny royal, and yellow buttons, and identified several weeds on their site. They also adopted a plant that they will revisit at their next VegWatch session in six months’ time.

A fungi foray produced just a couple of samples, which was not that surprising considering the recent dry weather. COMMUNITY MEETING

Talk about and have a look at the Proposed Design of the Merriwa Rotary Skate Park Complex. Monday 4 April, 2011 at 7pm in the Squatters Corner, Merriwa RSL.

Do you know of the plans and fundraising that’s been happening with Merriwa Rotary and the Merriwa ‘Youth Off The Streets’ Committee? Do you want to see the playground designs that have been proposed? Come along to the public meeting, see the designs and the layout of the proposed complex. There will be $204,000 worth of infrastructure spent on the completed complex designed by the Merriwa youth and Merriwa Rotary. Our youth and Merriwa Rotary want our community to see what our plans are for the proposed complex. We’d like your comments and support, especially from the parents of Merriwa. This wonderful complex will benefit your children. Bring your children along to the meeting to see what it could look like. Play infrastructure for our youth is long overdue. They deserve to have safe play community infrastructure for their out-of-school hours leisure activity.

This is your chance to see what is planned and give your support to the youth of our community. Come along and meet your local Rotarians and the youth who are the driving force behind this project and see how close we are to starting the first project. Rotary and the youth have designed a senior playground, a junior playground, shelters, outdoor gym equipment, a BBQ, a rubbish bin (now been promised to be delivered and paid by Upper Hunter Shire Council), and a half bowl with spine in the skating department. A very good selection of equipment which will be a great asset for our community.

See you all there on Monday 4 April, 2011 at 7pm in the Squatters Room at the Merriwa RSL. Support our youth by showing them community support. Further information ring

MERRIWA POST OFFICE More than just a Post Office! Telstra T-Touch Tab It’s either a large mobile phone or a small computer. And it falls into the category of “how did I manage without it before”. Or “why do I need one now?” Read on and decide! Telstra’s T-Touch tablet connects wirelessly to their Next G network – just like a mobile phone. It has a 3Mpx dual camera with video, MP3 player, 2GB micro SD card included, hands free speakerphone, Bluetooth stereo, Wi-Fi, AGPS and all the other features you would expect in a high-end mobile. But it’s bigger than a normal mobile (but not too big to easily carry around) has a full 7 inch touch screen and runs the new Android operating system. This gives access to all Google services such as Email, video, Maps and YouTube plus a diverse range of applications (Apps) such as social networking, navigation, lifestyle, games and hundreds more. Part mobile, part tablet and part touch screen computer – you get a lot for only $199. Check out the Prepaid Telstra T-Tab dummy at the PO. Recharge amounts are the same as Telstra Prepaid mobiles. Amayzim Sim Arrives Are you sick of paying up to $1 a minute for mobile phone calls? Is you pre-paid credit always running out because of these expensive calls? Especially if you are on the “Telstra long life” option which gives users 6 or 12 months in which to use up their credit –

but the calls cost nearly $1 a minute. After a long wait there is now, finally an answer. The new Amayzim Sim is very simple when it comes to call costs: All standard calls within Australia are 15 cents a minute, to landlines or mobiles. Text is 12c each. Data is 5c per Mb. There is no Flagfall (up-front charge) or other hidden costs. All pre-paid top-ups last 90 days. Even overseas calls are only 15c/min to landlines in most countries or 25c per text message. Calls to overseas mobiles vary from 15 – 29c /min depending on country. Visit www.amayzim.com.au to confirm. Yes, you can transfer your old number to the Amayzim or just use the new number that comes with the Amaysim. Yes, you can change between your old Sim and the Amayzim Sim at any time. Pre-paid Amayzim credit is available from Merriwa PO and comes in $10 to $50 vouchers. The Sim costs just $2. Downside? Your existing mobile must be unlocked. If you have no contract or if you have a pre-paid that is over 6 months old or has had more than $80 credit put on it then unlocking should be free. Ring you current provider to unlock (for Telstra ring 1300 720 179). Also the Amaysim operates on the Optus network so you may not get service away from towns (but this is improving soon as Optus rolls out their 3G network). Confused? Main thing to remember is the cheap 15c per minute phone calls. I am currently trialling the Amayzim in my mobile so see Mel at the PO for info. BUSH FIRE DANGER PERIOD EXTENDED The NSW Rural Fire Service has extended the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period in the Liverpool Range Zone, in the council areas f Upper Hunter, Liverpool Plains and Gunnedah Shires due to continued high levels of fuel. The Bush Fire Danger Period generally ends on March 31, but due to prevailing conditions. Liverpool Range Zone has extended the bush fire danger period until 30 April 2011. The extensions means anyone wishing to light a fire in the zone will still require a permit. Fire permits are free and are available from your local fire station or Fire control Centre.

Since weather conditions remain conducive for bush fires, we urge all residents to have a Bush Fire Survival Plan and report any unattended fires they see to Triple Zero (000).

For more information contact the Liverpool Range Zone on free call 1800 081 166 or visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au

iPhone4 or come to Merriwa PO and get the better performing HTC Wildfire on Telstra pre-paid for only $295. A recent test by a reputable, and well known Australian Consumer magazine puts the HTC Wildfire number one of all the smartphones. The test report says that the Wildfire has a very good hi-res. display and the best photo performance with its LED flash and 5 Mpx camera. The Samsung Galaxy came second in the test report and we have that at the PO too. It’s only $179 for the Galaxy 5. If you want the third best iPhone4 you will have to look elsewhere. Huawei Mobile Secrets! We have had the Optus Huawei in stock for a while but haven’t sold one, despite the attractive $49 price tag. Why? Well it’s probably because of the name which nobody has heard of. Kerry needed a new Optus prepaid mobile and carried out some research which lead to the Huawei as her preferred choice. The research showed that the phone had a camera which is not mentioned anywhere on the packaging. So she bought the Huawei U2800 and once out of the box found a nicely made, slim and attractive mobile with a nice clear colour screen. She has used it for a while now and is very happy with her purchase. So, come in and have a look at the Optus Huawei U2800. Don’t be put off by the strange name – this is the company that manufactures mobiles for many of the big players. It has a camera, MP3 player, speakerphone and expandable memory. Only $49 and personally tested by our Kerry! Postmasters thought for the week: Critics are likely to be people who speak out with the full confidence of ignorance. Melism

ROCKWELL LIVESTOCK & PROPERTY Livestock News Why use AuctionsPlus? Auctions Plus is a computer based, livestock market platform where stock are auctioned over the internet in real time. If you have a computer and the internet you can view the auction from your office. Livestock are drafted, weighed and assessed by an accredited assessor and photographs taken. All this information and the photographs can be viewed prior to the auction by prospective buyers. The big advantage is that buyers Australia wide use Auction Plus to purchase their livestock. In the past month Rockwell Livestock has sold cattle to Victorian buyers for prices in excess of local prices. Over the past 12 months stock have also been sold throughout NSW, Qld and SA. The demand for stock comes from the areas where the season is good as in Victoria at the moment. As the vendor you also retain control over what price your stock return. You set a reserve and starting price prior to Auction with the option to negotiate with the losing bidder if your stock are not sold.

Other advantages are that there are no freight costs as the stock are sold on farm and the selling costs are less than selling through the saleyards. Meredith, Mary and Sue all ended the round with 38 points but Merrie won on a count back with a sizzling 23 points on the back nine. Mary won the nearest the pin on the 4th and Sue won it on the 18th. Sue also won the ball draw.

A good turn up again for golf on 23 March. The course is greening up from the recent rain and there is a lot less run and consequently the scores are not quite as good as they were. Congratulations to Tania who won with 36 points on a count back from Libby and Sue. Tania also won the nearest the pin on the 18th and Robyn won the ball draw.

The crows are out and about again but seem to be just teasing us by moving the balls rather than stealing them. What are they thinking?? The team for the Country Cup to be held on Tuesday 5 April is Captain Di, De and Mary. Congratulations on your selection girls and we wish you all the best of luck in your attempt to win the Country Cup for Merriwa. (No pressure!)

We have eight girls entered to play in the Aberdeen Open Day on 13 April. This is the first one of the season and everyone is keen to do well, especially Robyn who is bravely setting out on her golfing debut.

It’s shaping up to be a busy year on the fairways and its wonderful to see everyone playing with great enthusiasm and skill. Keep it up girls!
