From our President~~~~~~~~~

Well, another two months have gone by, and I’ve been

able to keep myself busy again. In May, I displayed my 2006

C55 AMG at the Carlisle Import and Kit Car Show with about

20 other fine examples wearing the three pointed star. At the

end of the month our family traveled up to see the Greenwich

Concours d’Elegance in CT. This is a two day show where

American cars are featured on Saturday, and foreign cars are

featured on Sunday. Robert was asked to be a Youth

Haggerty Judge on Sunday and judged 4 cars with a group of young car enthusiasts. He is planning

to do this again at the Deutsche Classic.

We went to the Hotel Hershey on June 12th to see the hill climb where we met up with John

Kitner. It’s great to see and hear old sports cars up close and at speed. June 13th, I traveled to

Bethlehem to see nearly 40 190SL’s at their national convention. Then it was back to Hershey to see

the Elegance at Hershey. This is a prestigious show in its 5th year with 75 classic cars carefully

placed in the gardens behind the hotel. Robert’s favorite was the actual

1964 Aston Martin DB5 used in the

movie Goldfinger. We just

happened to be there when it was

being judged, so we saw the owner

operate many of the special gadgets

such as rotating license plates,

hidden machine guns, bullet proof

shield, tire shredding wheel hubs,

etc.

We closed out June with the

defensive driving class and

autocross at Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories. I look forward to seeing another great gathering of

Mercedes at the Deutsche Classic on July 11. Our club was given $500 in regional funds to be used

to promote the club at car shows. We just purchased a 10’ x 10’ blue canopy, a new section banner

and a teardrop MBCA banner.

In August we will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the PA Turnpike. We will caravan from

Harrisburg to the Sideling Hill Plaza for a car show. Please see the articles for the upcoming events.

Mercedes Benz of Lancaster’s service department has asked that we remind our members to please

inform the service writers that you are an MBCA member when you bring your car for service, so that

they can insure you get your 15% discount, and it is written up before service. This will save you and

the service dept. the time of having to do a refund after the fact. This would also work at Sun Motors

or any other authorized dealer that offers MBCA members a discount.

DEUTSCHE CLASSIC CAR SHOW Oley, PA July 11, 2015

We will be returning to the Deutsche Classic Car show at the Oley Fairgrounds. Oley is northeast of Reading. The show is rain or shine and starts at 8:00 am and ends at 4 pm. Cars on display will include: Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen as well as the unique “orphan” cars. German motorcycles will also be displayed in a non-judged display. This show continues to grow every year and is celebrating its 11th anniversary this year. Last year they had 330 show cars, 50 parts vendors and 1410 persons on-site. We had about 60 Mercedes-Benz models on display. Other activities include a tire toss for the men and a ladies in jeans German car trivia contest for the women. Top prizes are a new set of tires and $300, respectively. This year our local Hagerty sponsor, Wes Clegg, has organized the Youth Judging Program for kids aged 8-14. Registration closes at 11am at the registration tent. The general admission price is $17, which includes 5 Free food and beverage tickets. Children under age 12 are free. The cost to show your car is $25 which includes one admission ticket and 5 food tickets. The judged show will have winners for each marque. Other trophies, such as best motor and best interior will also be presented. Judged cars must be on the field by 11:30 am. The judging process is very relaxed. We encourage all members to display their cars regardless of age or condition so that our club will be well represented. Awards will be presented at 3:00 pm. If you have a car for sale, you can put it in the car coral for $25. You can also get a vendor space for the same fee. As the word spreads about PA's only all German car show, more neighboring section members continue to join our ranks every year. Keith and Phil Morgan will be driving down from Maine once again this year. Please plan to join us for a fun day. You'll never know what you will see.

For more information visit their website at http://www.deutscheclassic.com/. There is no

official pre-registration. Just register at the gate. Please contact Larry Taylor at (717) 627-1423 or [email protected] if you have any questions.

Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals May 15-17, 2015

The Keystone Section displayed about 20 Mercedes on Saturday May 16 at the Carlisle Import and Kit Car Show. The rain held off until mid-afternoon. Eric Shank showed his 1988 560SL and Andrew Saft showed his 380SL. It was great to meet a few new faces this year. There is always a wide variety of cars from all corners of the globe.

Defensive Driving and Autocross at Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories

June 27-28, 2015 by Larry Taylor

The weekend started with a defensive driver course at Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories for the lab employees and children on Saturday June 27. We had 25 participants including many younger drivers for this course. I taught the classroom portion while my wife Mary, and Ron Fox, one of our

newer members, handled the in car instruction. The rainy conditions gave everyone a chance to learn even more about car control. On Sunday June 28 we hosted our annual autocross. Because of several scheduling conflicts, we only had 6 drivers this year. We were honored to have National President Terry Kiwala from Chicago and National Treasurer Bill Hopper serve as instructors. This was the first visit by a National President to our section in about 20 years. A big thank you goes to Sam Huber, facilities manager, who secured the great autocross lot for our club. He also provided access to the training room for both events. The course consisted of several S turns, a slalom, a U-turn, and a circle. We had 4 practice runs to learn the course, then had 4

official runs. Mary Taylor and Bill Hopper ran the timing and scoring table. There were 4 classes. Surprise guest David Harras from the Delaware Valley Section stunned everyone with his 2015 GTS Edition 1 with roughly 500 horsepower. He told me that he started doing MBCA driving events in 1969 with his 300SEL 6.3. He turned in the 2nd fastest time of the day. Larry Taylor set the fastest time of the day in his C55 AMG, while Mary had the fastest women’s time. Brad Eisenhauer turned in some very entertaining runs in his Black Beast. Mellissa has a much smoother approach and is narrowing the gap. Bob Zangueneh was really pushing his 560SL. He kept braking later and later with each run. Terry Kiwala and I presented the awards (See photo above). Thanks to Jan and John Kitner for purchasing the trophies.
