MISSIONTo improve academic and personal success for at-risk youth through collaboration and innovative approaches to mentoring and learning.
VISION Every student is inspired to succeed academically and personally
OUR FOUNDING Long Beach BLAST – Better Learning for All Students Today was founded in 2000 by attorney and youth advocate, Jean Egan, in response to studies conducted as part of the City of Long Beach’s 2010 Strategic Plan. Those results indicated that Long Beach citizens wanted to ensure a consistent, citywide focus on improving the well-being of the city’s youth. Key goals set forth in the plan included increasing the percentage of at-risk youth meeting academic standards, increasing youth engagement in productive activities, and engaging college students as volunteers and mentors.
MENTORING Mentoring has been shown to improve children’s chances of academic and social success and appears to reduce negative behavior, improve self-esteem and promote positive social attitudes and relationships. Youth who meet regularly with their mentors are 57% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 37% less likely to skip a class, 46% less likely to start using illegal drugs and 27% less likely to start drinking.* According to Mentoring.org and the Governor’s Mentoring Partnership, children and youth who are mentored are less likely to be involved with gangs, violence, teen pregnancy, and alcohol and drug use, do better academically, have better attitudes toward school, better attendance and a better chance of going on to high school.
A Message From Our President Marquita Grenot-Scheyer As President of the Long Beach BLAST Board, I am pleased to present our annual report. I have the privilege to work with a committed group of professionals and volunteers who are dedicated to meeting the needs of the children and youth in our Long Beach community.
This past year, BLAST matched 482 college mentors, for a total of 9,103 since our beginning in 2000. Perhaps more importantly, our staff provided services and support to 856 risk students in Long Beach. And in 2017-2018, we will continue this upwards trajectory.
In recognition of our original commitment as a board to continue to grow to serve the needs of our students, the board has developed a new strategic plan which will guide our work in the future. On behalf of all the children and youth that we serve, thank you to our exceptional staff, board members, donors, and program partners for all that you do to make this work possible.”

The Academic Mentoring Program (AMP) is the flagship program of Long Beach BLAST. We partner with a number of schools and community-based sites in the greater Long Beach area to provide mentoring services to at-risk youth. BLAST recruits students from local colleges and universities, then screens, trains and matches these college students to at-risk youth. The volunteers serve as mentors and provide one-on-one support to promote academics, future thinking and character development.

BRIDGE TO SUCCESSThe Bridge to Success program serves credit deficient and highly at-risk youth who attend alternative and continua-tion high schools. Many of these students face difficulties related to poverty, homelessness, pressure from gangs and violence. Our program provides them with credit recovery life skills courses. Our program provides guest speakers, field trips, and a college/career access curriculum to encourage and inspire student participants to set and achieve goals. These three program components work together to give students real world experiences on the topics of college, career planning and life skills.
