Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,After a season of transitions, it is good to welcome some new faces and focus, and renewed commitment to our mission to make and nurture disciples in the name of Christ! Here are just some of the new things we can celebrate:Shelby Stanaford began serving as our Administrative Assistant in June. At its last meeting the Session unanimously approved the recommendation of the Personnel Committee that Shelby has successfully completed the initial probationary period and her employment be made official! Shelby has been quick to learn about our church community, the running of the office, and has provided a calm, caring presence for everyone calling and visiting the office. Most of you have noticed the beautiful updates to the memorial garden in front of the church, the repair and replacement of the sidewalk, and updates to the landscaping made possible by a generous memorial donation from the family of Pat Parlier. We look forward to Pat’s family joining us for the dedication of the memorial garden in the very near future. While we have said goodbye to Brian Frederick, who has retired as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 488, and await decisions about the future of that program, we welcome new Club Scoutmaster, Aaron Johnson. Aaron and an energetic group of parent leaders are ready to lead a strong group of younger boys and their families as they begin to incorporate the Family Scouting program. This is a wonderful opportunity for our church to support young families in Corbin and partner with the Scouts to do even more! Shelby and I have been working hard to implement a new database system called Realm to correct some of the inaccuracies and combine the multiple information lists that have developed over the years. It is our hope that all this work will result in improved record keeping and free us to focus on other important ministries, including the newsletter and new website. We also continue to prayerfully attend to ongoing ministries and look for ways to grow and live in response to God’s gifts to us:The Finance Committee and Session are aware that we must pay greater attention to our finances and work is underway to make recommendations about how we can be faithful stewards of the resources that have been entrusted to us and plan for the future. The Food Pantry and Senior Box ministries continue to be signs of faithfulness and grace. We give thanks to all who give of their time, talents and resources to reach out to our neighbors.

PRESBYTERY RESOURCES

As the world around us becomes increasingly polarized and the demonizing and belittling of those with whom we disagree becomes commonplace and accepted even among people of faith, our presence in this community and witness to God’s reconciling love in Jesus Christ becomes even more vital. Many of you have said to me that you can’t imagine a future without Corbin Presbyterian Church. Please join me in praying for our present and for discernment for our future with confidence in God’s continued faithfulness.Grace and peace,LisaHere are some opportunities to share with other Presbyterians in region. For more information follow the links provided or call the church office.

Fall Missional Church ConferencePlease plan to attend the Fall Missional Church Conference on October 19 (Friday) & 20 (Saturday), at First Presbyterian Church, Winchester. Our featured speaker is the Rev. Brian Clark, of Phila Consulting, and pastor, Riverside Presbyterian Church, Sterling, VA. Brian will address "Learning to embrace and follow your 'have to' go!"

The Gospel of John says Jesus "had to" go through Samaria.  His disciples didn't see any reason to go through Samaria.   Nobody "had to" go through Samaria except Jesus.  Where and who is your "have to" go?  We will spend Friday night and Saturday afternoon wrestling with that question.  We will consider how can you help your church to go with you. This time will be practical with every participant leaving with a next step.

If you are interested, please email [email protected] or [email protected] for more information or to register.

PARTICIPANT BONUS: you will receive the book "Canoeing the Mountains; Christian Leadership in Unchartered Territory" by Tod Bolsinger. Tod will be the keynote speaker at the "All-Kentucky Presbytery Meeting", November 2,3 at The Presbyterian Church, Danville.

October 7 2018Table Blessing, a poem by Jan Richardson

To your table you bid us come. You have set the places, you have poured the wine, and there is always room, you say, for one more. And so we come. From the streets and from the alleys we come. From the deserts and from the hills we come. From the ravages of povertyand from the palaces of privilege we come.Running, limping, carried, we come.We are bloodied with our wars, we are wearied with our wounds,we carry our dead within us, and we reckon with their ghosts. We hold the seeds of healing, we dream of a new creation,we know the things that make for peace, and we struggle to give them wings. And yet, to your table we come.Hungering for your bread, we come;thirsting for your wine, we come;singing your song in every language,

speaking your name in every tongue,in conflict and in communion,in discord and in desire, we come, from north and south and east and west, we come.O God of Wisdom, we come.

A Note from your Administrative Assistant Hey everyone,I began my journey with CPC on June 18th, and here we are already in October, my fourth month aboard! I would like to share with you words from my own heart.I came into this position only a month after graduating with a business degree. Business is something I truly enjoy and I was excited to start something new and to grow both in experience and as a person. In just four short months, I can easily proclaim that my life has been wonderfully impacted and changed for the better because of the opportunity to be here.It is easy to see that the Lord works in mysterious ways as we do not often understand why or how things happen in our lives. But when we look back and reflect upon the things that have happened, you can’t miss it! While each day I have been alive, has been according to His plan, it is without any doubt that I can see my current self now, having started unfolding a few years ago. All of which took place, one at a time, in preparation for here and now. Corbin Presbyterian Church and all involved, have become my family. We often hear of people searching for contentment in their work life, and how truly wonderful is it to be able to say I have experienced it because I found it here! I do not know what my future holds or what the Lord has planned for me, but I do know His plans are far better than I could ever try to make for myself. I truly feel I was meant to be here because it goes beyond being employed to be your administrative assistant. The church and all of its people have been a beautiful blessing. In a time of taking on a new career path, experiencing life changes and transitions, needing direction and guidance, I was lead here. I was warmly welcomed, genuinely accepted, trained for my position and educated about the Presbyterian church and its foundations, and I have made lifelong friends who I will cherish throughout the rest of my life! I also found that being here has taught me quite a bit about myself; my spirituality, my

faith, and heart have been beautifully nurtured and I am humbled by the growth that I see.

It is an honor to be in this position and to work for each of you and this church. I hope to continue growing in my abilities to accomplish my job daily, our goals, and the needs presented to me. I graciously thank you for my wonderful opportunity to be here, for everything everyone has done, and for all that I have received.

I wanted to share a special verse that has shone light upon my life and experiences, and feels truly fitting. It reminds me that we are always learning and growing, but are never ever alone.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.”Psalm 32:8
