QUESTION 5Media AS Level: How did you attract/address your audience?

Page 2: Media Question 5

FRONT COVERMy design recognises the target audience's preference to sans serif fonts. I used them to make the magazine look aesthetically pleasing and easy to read, which is what the audience desired.I have used a deep shade of red for the house style of my magazine. The red is the favoured colour of my target audience, so they are likely to approve of the front cover due to the inclusion of this colour.

I have catered for both genders by using a colour for the background that neither gender is likely to find biased to the opposite sex. This keeps everyone happy and satisfied.

Only one artist has been used on the front cover, meeting the target audience's requirements. The image takes up a large part of the page so that it is clear to the target audiences who they are. The coverlines contain language such as ‘Exclusive’ which will appeal to the target audience because they will think that the magazine has scooped an article that no other magazine can, which connotes superiority and that my magazine is one of the best available.

CONTENTS PAGEMy target audience is recognised as advocating social media. Therefore, my magazine embraces it by placing social media contact details at the top of the page.

Just like the front cover, the contents page uses a gender neutral background colour so that no bias is hinted at a particular gender. This again means that both genders are kept satisfied with the magazine. The artists in the images on the contents page are wearing casual clothing that people in my target audience also like to wear. This appeals to my target audience because it means they are reading a magazine that can identify with, it is familiar to them.

Red is also used as the main colour for the contents page, because it is the most popular colour amongst my target audience. This again keeps them satisfied with the design and aesthetics of my page. The word ‘authority’ helps to show the audience that the magazine is a trusted source of music news and ‘gossip’ because the female section of my target audience is particularly interested in that.

Again, I used sans serif fonts universally across the page to meet the requirements of the target audience that those sorts of fonts be used. This also satisfies the expectations of the audience.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREADIn keeping with the rest of my magazine, I have used red to appeal to the target audience because that is the most popular colour according to my survey and research.

My body copy text is organised into columns which break the text up and make it seem more comforting to the readers. This appeals to my target audience because it shows that the magazine makes every effort to please them. The background colour is

once again a gender neutral colour. This means, just like on the other pages, that there is no bias hinted to a particular gender.

The image satisfies the target audience’s requirements that there be a male solo artist in the magazine. The headline is in sans serif font to make the page look professional and clear, and it shows that the magazine listens to it’s audience, who favour the use of these fonts. The mise-en-scene of the image also appeals to the target audience because the artist is wearing a hoody and jeans, the sort of clothing that my target audience wears. This means that they can closely identify with the magazine.

My body copy text is also set in serif font. This may not please the target audience because it isn’t sans serif, but it will please them because it is conventional of a magazine and also a serif font is clearer and slightly bolder than a sans serif font at small sizes.
