Branched-Chain Amino Acids or BCAA’s have become all the craze for athletes looking to
improve performance but why are there so many different ratios? A common question asked is
what is the best ratio to be used in a BCAA blend? Is it 2:1:1, 5:1:1, 8:1:1 or 10:1:1?
The optimal ratio of the BCAA is 2:1:1 and the primary reason is that this is the ratio that natural-
ly occurs in foods, the ratio found in muscle tissue and the ratio supported by the majority of
published scientific studies on the benefits of BCAA supplementation for muscle growth, energy
and fat loss.
The proper 2:1:1 represents the ratio of leucine:valine:isoleucine. Higher amounts of leucine in
a BCAA formula has not been shown in scientific studies to be any more beneficial than in the
2:1:1 ratio. In fact, higher leucine content may actually be detrimental in outcompeting valine and
isoleucine for absorption, assimilation into muscle tissues and function. Valine helps blunt fatigue
during exercise and isoleucine may provide benefits in promoting fat burning during exercise.
So why then do you see so many BCAA blends on the market with modified ratios of the
BCAA’s? The answer is simple – it costs less to make so they make more PROFIT off of you!
The bottom line is to stay with the natural balance of the BCAA in the 2:1:1 ratio, the optimal
ratio that is supported by published science for all types of exercise, muscle growth, recovery
and even fat loss. There are no proven additional benefits of higher ratios of leucine in addition
to wasting money and sabotaging the benefits.

I'VE GOT TO be honest with
you all. I have been racking
my brain on what to write. Of
course I'd love to pen something
inspirational and share another
I may still do that), but I have to
take my hats off to the women
featured in this issue: moms of all
kinds who are daily making the
choices to live healthy, eat right,
exercise, and be good role models
to their children. Theirs are the stories you need to hear. Not mine.
These moms haven't always been fit, some are even overcoming
morbid obesity. But the common thread that weaves them all together
(besides being moms) is they have all learned that it is OK to take care
of themselves – to make their health and happiness a priority.
I know so many moms who have let themselves go after having
children. Why is this such an epidemic? Why do people judge moms
who want to look and feel good? Why do moms feel they aren't
allowed to do anything for themselves once their children are born? I
don't have the answers. But maybe the ladies featured in these pages
can help you moms out there understand that if you're not healthy and
happy, you can't be the best role model for your children, no matter
how much you sacrifice for them.
Our children learn from us and it is up to us to set them on the
path to be the best versions of themselves and that includes teaching
them to eat healthy, make exercise a priority, and appreciate the
value of a healthy lifestyle. Need a reminder of why this is important?
Exercising and eating right help stave off all kinds of illness and
disease not to mention doing these things just makes you feel good
– like, ALL. THE. TIME.
Don't be a mom who can't find 20 minutes a day for yourself to
better yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically. We give you
permission to do it. If your family doesn't understand, then TOUGH!
This is about YOU and YOUR needs. You're still a woman after all – not
 just a mom!
  If you're scared and don't know where to begin, read through
the articles in this issue to get inspired and learn excellent ways to
work out anywhere, make eating healthy foods fun and adventurous,
and how to carve out some time for yourself. If you need help with a

I'M SURE that I'm biased when it
comes to my wife, but I would be
hard pressed to think of a better
role model for their family when it
comes to living a healthy life.
If you are a mother trying to
balance a healthy life and family,
you know it isn't easy. Having a
child is a lot of work; having two
is even more. So you can imagine
how hectic it is with four active kids ranging from 17 down

workout in, whether it's a quick power walk after dropping the
kids off at school or doing lunges and squats in between holes
at my son's golf tournaments.
When it comes time to prepare meals for the family, it would
be a lot easier and cheaper to give us processed foods, but
she takes the extra time and effort to make us healthy meals.
  My wife leads by example and is a great role model for our

the same from our family. I know I'm extremely fortunate and
blessed to know my kids have such a great role model when it
comes to living a healthy life and I'm very thankful for that.
  So to all of the hard working moms out there and to my
wife, Happy Mother's Day and thank you for all that you do!

I grew up as a multi-sport athlete but didn't really start working out with weights until I got to college. Even now I play multiple sports throughout the year, including city league softball, co-ed volleyball, soccer, and basketball. I also enjoy and have run multiple half marathons and adventure races.  Just because I'm the son of an ex NFL player doesn't mean I can sit back and rely
on genetics and athleticism. Everyone has to work hard, bust their butts, and stay dedicated to see results.
In April 2015, I got bored with my workouts, which I had been doing on my own for years. I started working with personal trainer Aaron Orton at Genuine Fitness. Besides competing himself, Aaron has trained multiple athletes to compete in bodybuilding, bikini, figure, and physique.  Working with a trainer with in-depth knowledge of the body, training, and
the sport greatly improved areas I needed to work on in order to have the shape, symmetry, and proportion needed to win on stage. It was also helpful to have a  very enthusiastic and supportive Max Muscle Nutrition store owner, om Wiens, of Max Muscle Eugene, Oregon. I initially started using the Max Muscle products of Max Glutamine, Max Creatine, Watermelon Pro BCAAs, and the Watermelon Slush Max Isolate at the recommendation of both Aaron and om.
In October 2015, I competed in my first show and took 1st Overall in the Masters Men's Physique and 2nd in my open class. In 38 days, I competed in four shows, winning 1st in every Masters and top two in every Men's Physique open, including one Open Overall.
In January, I told om I wanted to try to use Max Muscle products exclusively.  As a natural athlete, what I put into my body was very important to me. Tawnya Goley of Tucson, Arizona met her future stepdaughters at ages 10 and 6, a time when she
had been struggling with her own weight and self-image for many years. But she knew that she
had to make some changes in how she talked about herself. “I wasn’t as conscious about the self-
talk until I realized I had four little ears listening to how I spoke about myself,” she said. “I never
wanted them to think of themselves the way I did, so I had to make a very conscious effort to be
thoughtful with my words and self-proclamations.”
  Parents can have a huge impact on a girl’s body image, said Lisa Damour, Ph.D, author of
Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood . And in a society where,
according to the National Eating Disorders Association, as many as 80 percent of 10 year olds worry
about being overweight and as many as 50 percent of teen girls use unhealthy weight control behaviors
like restricting food, taking laxatives, and smoking cigarettes, you need to be careful about the messages
you send your kids. Not only does what you say about your own body, her body, and other women’s bodies
matter, but also what you say about food, exercise, and even clothing.
Unfortunately, it’s hard work to combat the influence of media, said Dr. Damour. “Girls are drowned in
imagery,” she said. “Everywhere they go, they see pictures that emphasize physical appearance. They can’t
get away from it, and parents can’t completely shield them from it.”
 What to do to help your girl develop a healthy body image? Don’t talk about diets and weight loss programs
or create shame around food, advised Dr. Damour. You don’t have to forgo the emphasis on healthy eating
and fitness, though, she added. “But it’s important to emphasize that healthy eating and fitness for all
family members is a way of taking care of ourselves, something you do for you, not to please anyone else
or look like anyone else.”
As for media influence, Dr. Damour added, parents can start the discussion by going online to show
how Photoshopping fabricates images, and explaining to their daughters that the women who model
clothing in the glossy magazines work hard to achieve near perfection because that’s their job. “It’s a full-
time enterprise to look good; they have a full-time squad of people to help them,” she said.
Tawnya’s girls are now 18 and 14, both athletes and “natural beauties,” and she hopes that what she
and her husband have taught them about health, nutrition, and physical strength will carry over into their
adulthoods. “I want them to learn to be strong, independent women and that THAT is beautiful,” she
explained. “Their intelligence and sense of humor and kindness make them beautiful, not their hair, looks,
or the size of their jeans.”

Always W; Nee a I  For Amanda Ruiz, motherhood is one of the greatest joys of her life, she said, “I love being a mom and enjoy it, but over time with the constant demand and need of just me, I started to resent all the demands and the lack of me time.”    Amanda Ruiz says the problem was that she was always a we, never an I. We, as in we are a family, we have kids, we have homework, or we need to buy groceries for meals. As a mom of six children under the age of 11, it’s easy to see how motherhood had claimed her "I" and turned her into a "we." The problem was, the kids were all I’s: I have soccer practice, I am hungry, I want a ride, or I have homework. Everyone was an I but Amanda, until one day just six weeks postpartum after delivering the sixth baby. That was the day that Amanda became an I. As she sat in the parking lot watching the people coming in and out of Max Muscle Oceanside, CA, she was afraid and insecure, but she decided right then and there to become and I, and she walked into the store and met owner Brittany Gaylord and signed up for a nutrition plan and support for a total body transformation.   Brittany set Amanda up on a customized nutrition plan, introduced her

Plan, Plan, and Plan  Today, Amanda, 26, is the busy, full-time working mom of 2 boys and 4 girls, ages

 Amanda kept her food in a separate pantry so that she wouldn’t be tempted to snack on the kids' favorites.
 A Family Fun Affair Involving the entire family helped make the hard work fun, and Amanda and her very supportive husband started family soccer games on the weekends and a Sunday Track Day where they would al l go to the track and run races and work out.
