     As I was pondering what to write this month, I looked toher book for inspiration. I read so many quotes that movedme, but this one (by Ralph Waldo Emerson) reached out ofthe page and grabbed my heart. It said, "To leave the worlda bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch,or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one lifehas breathed easier because you lived – that is to havesucceeded."   On February 21, 2013, my father left this world after alengthy battle with congestive heart failure and Parkinson'sdisease. He fathered seven children (and was a step-fatherto four others) and imparted to us his drive and ambition,work ethic, and strong beliefs to care about the wellbeingof others and to make the world a better place. We are hislegacy. He succeeded in life.

    My sister Deborah was killed in a tragic car crash May 24,2015. Friends and family to this day continue to post on herFacebook wall saying how much she is missed. During her

    life, she fought to open people's eyes to global warming andshe encouraged others to do their part to take care of thisearth. She brought smiles to people's faces with her angelicsinging. She nurtured and took care of the sick. She drovean old beat up Toyota Echo and made less than $15,000 ayear. She succeeded in life.

    I know that many of you are trying to reach your goals

    HERE WE ARE moving into a newyear again. I have been through more

    than 50 of these and at least 40 that Iactually felt the need to set some New

     Year’s resolutions. They have changeda little over the years, but overall the

    same ones keep coming up everyJanuary. It’s a little unfair that before

    every year ends, we go through a2-month holiday binge of partying

    with family and friends, and inevitablywe gain some extra pounds andfeel horrible. And the most popular

    resolutions again this year are (drumroll please) to lose weight, eat better,

    and, work out consistently. Honestly,

    they are all pretty much one in thesame.I went to the gym on January 2nd

    and of course there were hundreds ofpeople working out and I ended up

    at all the new faces and thought tomyself “How long will this last?” Here

    we are a couple weeks later and Iwould estimate that 25 percent of the

    for a bike. So the New Year’s cyclecontinues as the resolutions are made,

    only to be broken come February.However, congratulations are in order

    to the small percentage who actuallymake the change and take charge of

    their life this year.I propose that in 2016 we change

    our resolutions to be a little different.

    Let’s not call it resolutions but simply, “lifestyle changes.” Going to the

    gym is not a goal or resolution, it’ssimply an essential daily function –

    no different than making sure yougo to work or getting the kids off to

    school. Eating a clean healthy dietisn’t the exception, it’s the rule. I

    know it’s easier to say than to do, butthe resolution idea obviously is not

    working for most people.They say your brain needs 21 days

    to develop a habit (some studies arenow saying you need even longer). So

    be as strict as possible so that yourbody adapts to your changes and let

    QThe Experience MattersWhether it’s sticking to a healthy diet, completing a difficult

     workout, or finishing a project on the job, you’re more likely to stay

    motivated if you’re enjoying it, say researchers from the University

    of Chicago Booth School of Business. The researchers found that

     while people tend to focus on the outcome of the effort both before

    and after completion, (such as improved health from working out),

    they value the experience itself while engaging in it – and are more

    Remember that “birds andbees” talk when you were

    an adolescent? Invariably, it

    included a caution against

    unprotected sex – because “it

    only takes once” to conceive

    a baby. But for those couples

    experiencing infertility,

    conception is not that easy.  Infertility – or the inability to conceive

    after one year of regular, unprotectedintercourse – affects more couples thanyou may think, said David Adamson, MD,founder and CEO of ARC fertility. “Overtheir lifetime, about one couple in six willKDYH GLI¿FXOW\ JHWWLQJ SUHJQDQW ZKHQthey want to,” he explained.  According to Dr. Adamson, theunderlying cause of infertility can bedetermined to be a problem with thefemale’s reproductive system in about50 percent of cases, and with the male’sreproductive system in about 25 percent

    of cases. In some instances, the problemis a combination of both female andmale issues, and in fewer situations, acause of infertility can’t be found. “Thisis called ‘unexplained infertility,’” he said.

     “This condition is probably caused byas-yet-unknown egg, sperm, genetic,immunological, and other conditions.”

    make a baby. First, during the beginningphase of the woman’s menstrual cycle,the hormones FSH and LH are releasedfrom the brain, where they travel to theovaries, stimulating the growth of some ofher immature eggs in their shells (follicles).These hormones also stimulate theproduction of the hormone estrogen, whicheventually causes FSH to turn off – limitingthe number of maturing follicles. During thistime, one of the maturing eggs becomesdominant, and continues to produceestrogen, while the remaining follicles dieoff.  The rise in estrogen triggers a surge inLH, which stimulates the dominant follicleto release its egg, causing ovulation.

     7KH HJJ LV WKHQ FDSWXUHG E\ WKH ¿PEULDH(projections on the end of the fallopiantubes) and swept into the tube, where itawaits fertilization.  Once the follicle has released its egg, itdevelops into the corpus luteum, a structurethat secretes yet another hormone –progesterone – which prepares the uterusfor a fertilized egg to implant. Prior to this,the woman’s cervix has begun to increasethe amount and thickness of mucusproduction, so that if intercourse occurs,it can capture the sperm and help guide ittoward the egg for fertilization.  If all goes as planned, the sperm willtravel to and fertilize the egg (conception),and then the newly developed embryo willtravel down through the fallopian tube andimplant successfully into the wall of the

    uterus. But there are many things thatcan go wrong in this process.

    Conception ChallengesIn the woman’s body, abnormal levels of thehormones needed to orchestrate ovulationand implantation, a blockage of the fallopianWXEHV ¿EURLGV RU SRO\SV LQ WKH XWHUXV RUeven abnormal cervical mucus can causea pregnancy to fail, said Dr. Adamson.Common male problems that contribute toinfertility include decreased sperm countor motility (movement), abnormal shape

    of sperm, as well as varicoceles (a veinabnormality in the scrotum).  And a woman’s age is a very importantfactor affecting fertility, said Jane Frederick,MD, medical director of HRC Fertility inNewport Beach, California. According to'U )UHGHULFN D ZRPDQ LV ERUQ ZLWK D ¿QLWHnumber of eggs. Throughout her life, themajority of these immature eggs will die,many prior to puberty, then more with eachmenstrual cycle. About 10 years prior tomenopause (approximately at age 40), fewfollicles remain. This means that fertility

    declines rapidly as we approach that age.

     “That biological clock is a very real thing,”she claimed.  The good news is that for many couples,WKHUH LV DQ HDV\ HQRXJK ¿[ ³7KHUH DUHeasy tests that can be done when a couplecomes in for a fertility consultation,” Dr.Frederick explained. In addition to aphysical examination, these include bloodwork to determine levels of reproductivehormones, and ultrasound testing tomeasure the follicle count in the ovariesDQG WR UXOH RXW SRO\SV ¿EURLGV DQG XWHUXVabnormalities. A hysterosalpingogram(HSG, an x-ray procedure) will determineif the fallopian tubes are blocked. Formales, a semen analysis can be done aswell as a scrotal ultrasound if needed, todetect a possible varicocele. Following theresults of the testing, the vast majority ofcouples can be helped with medications (totreat hormone imbalances and stimulateovulation), or simple procedures to correctproblems such as fallopian tube blockageor varicoceles. “Only about two percentof infertile couples need high technologytreatments such as in-vitro fertilization(IVF),” said Dr. Frederick.

    When to see a fertility specialist? “Women younger than age 35 whoare having regular intercourse withoutcontraception who are not pregnant afterone year should see a fertility specialist,”said Dr. Adamson. “For those aged 35-40,seek help after six months, and if 40 orolder, after three months.” 

    High-Tech Treatments:KHQ D VLPSOH ¿[ IRU LQIHUWLOLW\ LVQ¶Wpossible, fertility experts have several moreadvanced treatment options available,said Rashmi Kudesia, MD, assistant clinicalprofessor of reproductive medicine at theIcahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinaiand reproductive endocrinologist andinfertility specialist at RMA of New York.Two of the most widely used treatments areintrauterine insemination (IUI) and in-vitrofertilization (IVF).Q IUI is a procedure where “processed”

    sperm (sperm that have been washed toconcentrate the hardiest specimens into aVPDOO DPRXQW RI ÀXLG DUH LQVHUWHG WKURXJKa small tube (catheter) into the uterus. IUImay be combined with fertility medications,which are used both to induce ovulation andto stimulate the ovaries to produce morethan one mature egg.     scarring (which may hinder the sperm’sability to enter the uterus). It is alsoused for those requesting donor sperminsemination. Couples may require morethan one cycle (round of treatment) inorder to conceive.  Although far less expensive than IVF,IUI is also less effective, with successrates highest in women under age 35.

     “In the best prognosis patients,” said Dr.Kudesia, “IUIs have a success rate percycle of approximately 20-25 percent.”

     Another disadvantage of IUI, he added,is that when this treatment is combinedwith fertility medications, there is anincreased risk of multiple births.Q IVF is a procedure in which theovaries are stimulated with fertility drugsto produce multiple mature eggs, thenthe eggs are retrieved from the ovariesvia a minor surgical procedure, examinedfor maturity and quality, and sometimesscreened for chromosomal abnormalities.The best quality eggs are placedtogether with sperm in a culture mediumand incubated overnight. In some cases,intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)may be used to directly inject a singlesperm into each mature egg. After

    Boost Your   Baby-Making

    PotentialAccording to the fertility experts,there are some things all couplescan do to optimize the chances

    for pregnancy:

    FOR BOTH WOMEN AND MEN

    Maintain a healthy weight. Both

    being overweight and being underweight

    can interfere with male and female

    reproductive hormones.

    Eat a healthy diet, with plenty of fruits

    and veggies.

    Exercise, but not too much. Excessive

    exercise can throw off your hormone

    levels.

    Don’t smoke or use recreational

    drugs, and limit alcohol use.  Avoid environmental toxins, such as

    household, lawn and garden chemicals,

    heavily sprayed foods, and plastics.

    These are “endocrine disruptors” that

    can interfere with the reproductive

    system.

    Make sure any chronic illnesses, such

    as diabetes or thyroid issues, are well-

    controlled. Some chronic illnesses can

    cause ejaculatory problems or difficulties

    with ovulation.

     See a doc if you suspect a

    reproductive infection. 

    STDs such as

    Gonorrhea and Chlamydia can scar

    or block fallopian tubes and cause

    problems with sperm quality.

    FOR THE LADIES

     See your gyno regularly, especially

    if you’re experiencing pelvic issues.

    Problems such as uterine fibroids,

    hormonal imbalances, and endometriosis

    can lower pregnancy potential.

    FOR THE GUYS

    Keep things cool down there 

    by avoiding hot tubs, prolonged

    sitting, or laptops on the lap. Heat

    causes decreased sperm motility and

    production.

    Get regular action. Of course it’s

    important to have sex during your

    partner’s ovulation. But recent research

    indicates that sperm are healthiest with

    no more than a few days of abstinence

    at a time.

    Ditch the soy. Tofu may be great for

    your heart but it may adversely impactsperm health.

     “Current trends in IVF are movingtoward the transfer of a single embryo todecrease the risk of multiple births. Andwhen the embryo has been screened forchromosomal abnormalities, the successrate with a single embryo transfer can bequite high,” approaching 50 percent inthe youngest patients, he added.

    Cost of TreatmentsWhile many insurance companies payfor infertility testing such as bloodwork, ultrasounds and x-rays as well assurgical procedures or medications tocorrect reproductive problems, few payfor fertility treatments such as IUI andIVF, making these procedures too costlyfor many couples to consider. Accordingto RESOLVE, the National Infertility

     Association, the national average costfor one cycle of IUI, using your partner’ssperm, is $900. IVF is even pricier – withan average cost of $11-12,000 per cycle,PRUH WKDQ GRXEOH WKLV ¿JXUH LI XVLQJdonor eggs.

    Planning for the Future “Young adults should plan theirreproductive life just as they plan theireducation and employment,” said Dr.

     Adamson. For a young woman whowishes to delay childbearing until hermid-30s or beyond, elective egg freezingmay provide an insurance policy againstovarian aging.  Egg freezing is becoming popularthese days, since studies have shownthat using frozen eggs for IVF iscomparable in success with using freshones. But there’s a hefty price tagattached: Egg harvesting costs about$10,000, storing the frozen eggs about$1,000 per year, and using them anadditional $5,000.MS&F

    and hands by your sides. Lower yourself into the jumping

    position by bending at the knees and hips. Keep your

    head up and back straight. Explosively jump from the

    crouched position while swinging your arms. Land

    softly on the center of the platform absorbing the

    impact with your legs, preferably your heels. Stand

    tall after landing on the box. Return to starting

    position by either jumping backwards off the

    box, or by stepping down and repeating the

    movement. This exercise will develop lower

    body strength, as well as increase your

    vertical jump.

    time of the year for us. Not only do

    we celebrate Valentine’s Day in our

    household, we celebrate Leah’s birthday

    on the same day. In case you are

    wondering, yes, that does mean two gifts.

    With that said, over the last few years,

    especially during Valentine’s Day, weoften receive questions on how we have

    managed a healthy lifestyle throughboth the “on” and “off” seasons with the

    popular topic including how to deal withEHLQJ ³KDQJU\´ /LYLQJ ¿W DQG KHDOWK\

    WRJHWKHU GH¿QLWHO\ KDV LWV FKDOOHQJHV

    especially when it comes time to step onstage. We have outlined a few tips thathave helped strengthen our relationship,

    plus we are providing a killer couples'workout.

     Food: When it comes to food, we love toshop, prep, and better yet, eat together.Because diet is 80 percent nutrition,

    we realized instead of shopping,cooking, and eating solo, we might as

    well spend it together. This has helpedus communicate better and hold us

    accountable to healthier food options, aswell as create unique food concoctions.

    it is about communication. We informeach other when our energy is down and

    start feeling the “hangry” mode creepingup on us. Plus, we apologize in advance

    for any unkind words that could possiblybe said!

     Going Out:  It is important to make timefor going out, whether it be for dinner,a movie, or just a friend’s house. We

    make sure to enjoy time well spent withfamily and friends as often as possible

    and try to limit our “dining out” to oneto two times a week. Our advice is to

    choices and take a peek at the menuin advance so you can have an idea ofwhat to order when you get there. This

    will help reduce your stress of what toorder and help you succeed in sticking to

    experience! Below are a few of our

    favorite exercises that you can do

    as a workout together with your

    swolemate. We suggest a 15-minute

    treadmill warm-up where you walk

    at an incline of about 10 to 15

    percent and at a speed of about

    2.5 to 3.5. This is a great time toconnect and start the workout on a

    positive note. Put your phones away

    and spend some time talking with

    each other. Ready for the workout?

    Here we go!

    1. Elastic Band Bis, Tris, & BackDo 3 sets of 10 reps

    Using an elastic band, have your partner put the band under his/her feet whileyou use the band to complete 10 curls. Have your partner move the band so it

    goes behind his/her back for support while you pull the band, complete 10 rows.

    Move the band back down to the feet. Facing your partner and leaning forward,

    complete 10 tricep kickbacks with your palm facing your body (do one arm at a

    time for more resistance) or both arms at once.

    4. Medicine Ball Sit UpsDo 4 sets of 20 reps

    Using a weighted medicine ball, complete 20 sit ups doing the following

    movement: have your swolemate stand on your feet while holding a

    medicine ball. Complete a full sit up without the medicine ball. When

    \RX UHDFK WKH WRS RI WKH ¿UVW VLW XS JUDE WKH PHGLFLQH EDOO +ROGLQJ

    it behind your head complete another sit up handing the ball to your

    partner at the top. Alternate with and without the medicine ball untilyou reach 20 reps. Note: No medicine ball? Do 30-40 reps.

    3. Plyo Box JumpsDo 4 sets of 15 jumps 

    Face each other and

    place the plyo box in

    the middle. Alternate

     jumping onto and off

    the box. Increase the

    one leg at a time.

    2. Partner Pull-UpsDo 4 sets of 10 reps

    Do these with a wide grip, palms facing away

    from face. Need help? Bend your knees 90

    degrees and have your swolemate stabilize

    your ankles. You can use this as leverage to

    pull yourself up!

    Using a bench, have one person get

    in a pushup position with their feet

    on the bench while simultaneously

    having the other person use the

    bench to complete dips. Perform 15

    reps of each and then switch.

    8. Weighted LungesDo 4 sets 20 reps

    (Not pictured) Each of you use a weighted straight bar and follow behind your

    swolemate until you complete 10 walking lunges (per leg) without touching your

    knee to the ground. The person in front is your motivation and also determines the

    pace. After 10 lunges, turn 180 degrees and follow your swolemate back another

    10 lunges. How’s the view?

    6. Moun tain Climbers

    dumbbell weights, put him/her

    through a bicep workout until they

    can no longer go. It is up to you to

    adjust the workout based on their

    speed and demeanor. Just remember,

    you’re up next!

    7. Kettlebell SwingsDo 4 sets of 12 front raises in unison

    Both of you complete 12 front kettle-

    bell swings in unison.

    Here is a good example: 

    •Use 50-pound dumbbells and complete

    10 bicep curls on each arm.

    •Use 30-pound dumbbells and complete

    10 hammer curls on each arm.

    •Use 30-pound dumbbells and complete

    5 half rep bicep curls on each arm.

    •Use 50-pound dumbbells and complete

    4 hammer curls on each arm.

    •Use 10-pound dumbbells and alternate

    between hammer curls and bicep curls

    until I say STOP.

    How do you stay motivated?

    I stay motivated by constantly setting

    new goals. I've found that setting a

    series of small weekly goals keeps

    me on track and motivated towards

    reaching my larger goals.

    What is your favorite body part to train and

    favorite exercises to perform? My favorite body

    part to train is my glutes! I'm not naturally blessed with much

    junk in my trunk so I'm proud to say I've built this booty from

    scratch. I've found that sumo squats, jump squats, walking

    lunges, straight-leg deadlifts, good mornings, and cable glute

    kickbacks, along with really focusing on that mind/muscle

    connection, have really helped shaped my behind.

    Who inspires you and why?I'm truly inspired daily by my clients. I always

    feel honored when someone chooses to train

    with me. Another huge inspiration in my life

    has been my coach, IFBB pro, mother, and

    friend Camile Periat. She has taught me so

    much not only about health and the fitness

    industry but she's taught me about self love

    and acceptance and inspires me to work hard

    and be a positive role model for those people who may be

    watching my journey and looking to me for inspiration.

    What is your advice to otherswho aspire to be like you?My advice is to go for it! Having a good

    support system or friends and family has been

    helpful to me. I also think it's really important

    for people to realize that everyone starts

    somewhere. I'm not just naturally thin or

    blessed with a high metabolism and six pack

    abs. I've had three kids and honestly I just

    woke up one day and decided, "I don't want tofeel this way about my body anymore. I want

    feel healthy and confident!" So I changed my habits and set small,

    attainable goals. It's never too late to set and

    accomplish new goals.
