A  story  is  told  of  a  man  who  loved  old  books.  He  met  a  friend  who  had  just  thrown  away  a  Bible  that  had  been  stored  in  the  attic  of  his  ancestral  home  for  generations.  "I  couldn't  read  it,"  the  friend  explained.  "Somebody  named  Guten-‐something  had  printed  it."  "Not  Gutenberg!"  the  book  lover  exclaimed  in  horror.  "That  Bible  was  one  of  the  first  books  ever  printed.  Why,  a  copy  just  sold  for  over  two  million  dollars!"  His  friend  was

unimpressed.  "Mine  wouldn't  have  brought  a  dollar.  Some  fellow  named  Martin  Luther  had  scribbled  all  over  it  in  German."

In  the  mid-‐15th  century,  Johann  Gutenberg  invented  a  mechanical  way  of  making  books.  Though  it  was   not   his   first   printed   book,   the   Gutenberg   Bible   (1450s)   was   the   first   major   book   printed   with  moveable  type.  Prior  to  this,  books  were  copied  by  hand,  but  now  it  was  possible  to  speed  up  the  process  without  sacrificing  quality.

As   important   as   Gutenberg’s   invention   was,   it   did   not   make   him   rich.   It   did,   however,   lay   the  foundation  for  the  commercial  mass  production  of  books,  which  meant  that  books  soon  became  cheaper,  and  a  wider  part  of  the  population  could  afford  them.

Today,  Bibles  are  readily  available  everywhere.  In  fact,  most  American  households  (92%)  possess  at  least   one   Bible,   while   the   average   is   three.   However,   possession   of   a   Bible   does   not  mean   it   is   being  studied  or  valued.    Though  Gutenberg’s  Bible  began  the  process  of  breaking  the  people’s  reliance  on  the  clergy   to   read  and   interpret   the  Bible,   few  have   taken   the  opportunity   to   study   it.   In   fact,   the  majority  today  still  remains  biblically  challenged.  For  example:

1. Only  half  of  adults  interviewed  could  name  any  of  the  four  Gospels  of  the  New  Testament.  2. Just  37%  of  those  interviewed  could  name  all  four  Gospels.  3. Only  42%  of  adults  were  able  to  name  as  many  as  five  of  the  Ten  Commandments  correctly.  4. Seven   in  ten  (70%)  were  able  to  name  the  town  where  Jesus  was  born,  but   just  42%  could   identify

Him  as  the  person  who  delivered  the  Sermon  on  the  Mount.    5. 38%   of   Americans   believe   the   entire   Bible   was   written   several   decades   after   Jesus'   death   and

resurrection  6. 12%  of  adults  believe  that  Noah's  wife  was  Joan  of  Arc.  7. 49%  believe  that  the  Bible  teaches  that  money  is  the  root  of  all  evil.  (The  love  of  money  is  said  to  be

the  root  of  all  types  of  evil).  8. 75%  believe  that  the  Bible  teaches  that  God  helps  those  who  help  themselves.

As  we  read  “The  Story”,  we  are  breaking  the  trend  and  adding  God’s  blessings  upon  us.  As  Revelations  1:3  states:  “Blessed  is  the  one  who  reads  the  words  of  this  prophecy,  and  blessed  are  those  who  hear  it  and  take  to   heart   what   is   written   in   it,   because   the   time   is   near.”     Let   us   continue   to   move   forward   in   our   faith  journey!

 1. Treasurer’s  Report:  It  was  noted  that  the  negative  amount  of  $5,705.91  was  due  mainly   to   the   2011  per   capita   of   $2,000  being   paid   in   2012   and   $10,000  per  year  ($2,500  per  quarter)  being  placed  in  the  Building  Fund.  2. Dates  for  the  2012  Vacation  Bible  School  will  be  July  16th  –  20th.  3. The  date  for  the  Calvaryfest  will  be  August  4th.  4. Building   Maintenance:   It   was   suggested   that   a   clipboard   be   put   up   so  members  can  list  the  things  they  see  that  need  to  be  repaired.    5. The  April  28th  Men’s  Breakfast  was  cancelled.  6. The   May   20th   Session   meeting   was   cancelled.   The   next   Regular   Session

Meeting  will  be  June  10th.
