Marta Hlavaty POL-111 2010 Formula Windsurfing ChampionI had really great time in Argentina! In conclusion. the organization was great, views were just splendid, conditions were perfect, and obviously I’m very happy about my third World Champ title in row. After the injury to my wrist I was confused how it will be in this competition. I was even hesitating with my coach if I should go or not, but now I’m sure that was a good choice to go there.

I had great sailing on my equipment, Starboard 161, and MauiSails TR6 10.0m. I like this set alot. The board works excellent like always, and now with my new Zfin 70cm I found better set up for strong wind that I was missing. The new TR6 10.0m is really smooth in riding and has big range of outhaul adjustment. It can be very deep on the boom, which I like. When I get back home to Poland, there is all new stuff waiting for me. I’m very happy to try it, because I heard the new 160 Starboard is great. And for this year I think to change from 161 to smaller 160, so I’m excited to test it.

The only one weak thing this year in Argentina was a girl’s fleet that was little. We missed for example Alison, Sarah, and Alice. It’s a pity. I hope next year will be much better. However I had really interesting racing with Morane Demont. This young and charismatic girl is talented and I think she can be next to gain World Champ title in the future (just keep on going Morane!).

My trip back home was as exciting as going to Mendoza, but less stress and more funny:) I was coming back through Santiago, Chile. I had a one night to stay there, waiting for the plane to Madrid. Luckily I met such great people that helped me to spend this night more interesting than sitting on the airport. First, Jorge and Rosana picked me up from the airport, then I had a dinner with their whole family. After, Antonia and two Peruvian girls that also took part in competition in Mendoza took me for great party and let me crash with them for the night. Thanks a lot to all of you guys:).

I want to thank all the people that helped me in this trip, my sponsors for great support, Starboard, MauiSails, Polish Yachting Association, Sieplywa.pl, Energysports and Ergo Hestia. After coming back home I had really rush days. Now I’m already in France for RSX training camp. Like always, I just can’t wait until next year’s Worlds and the next Formula event.

Cheers Marta Hlavaty POL-111

A lot of racing in MarchI started March with a quick trip to Maui to get my new sails. I sailed almost everyday with Phil as luckily the wind was not that strong. I went to the Midwinters which I enjoyed a lot this year. A lot of friends were there and a lot of good sailors too. I tested with Gabriel most of the time before the event and my speed was very good. I finished 2nd at the event and I had a very good fight for the top of the podium.

After that I rushed to Mendoza, Argentina, where the Formula Worlds happened. I had almost ten days of tuning there with Jesper and Ross so we were quite prepared for the event. The venue was a beautiful lake between mountains next to Chile. We experienced the earthquakes there as we were so close. Luckily no Tsunami in the lake!! The event in the end was not that great for me as I end up 15th. I expected to end up way higher in the ranks but some mistakes, some bad luck, and everything goes bad very fast. Now I am back home in Buenos Aires working on the shop and preparing for the slalom season. Shortly I will be off to Maui to do some heavy training there.

Best regards, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel ARG-3.

Back on the roadAlways in March I start again to travel around for some events. The first one was the 25th Calema Midwinters. Every year I go to this competition. I like the place and it’s always a good testing with the new sails. After that I went to Argentina for 15 days. I was ready for the FW worlds. The beautiful lake was very tactical and hard to race. But in the end the event was great with wind everyday and very well organized. Back to Brazil, the weather here is perfect for surf and SUP. The off shore winds in the morning are making very good waves for us!! Now I’m looking forward to arrive on Maui. Long time since I dont get a good wave sailing condition. See you !! Frenchis the word for March

In the start of the month of March we travelled from Paris to Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean after being invited to participate in a 180 km long distance event, together with some of the worlds fastest windsurfers. I saw it as a big challenge and opportunity to promote the sport other then that also a good measure before the start of the world cup season, to gage fitness levels and see what needs to be improved. A dodgy forecast predicted no official race due to winds from an unfavorable wind direction, and another ’small’ problem was my sails had not arrived. In a fun race and on a borrowed TR-6 7.6 prototype I got of a flying start before getting rolled by Antoine and Cyril on their big sails. Most importantly my boardspeed felt good and it could’ve worked out a differently, if the rounding hadn’t been so up in to wind. We travelled around a lot and got some nice impressions from this part of the world, met a lot of nice people, spend time with the locals and sailed with the kids and upcoming talents of Martinique who were sailing hard in the local competitions on the weekend. We scored some waves for surfing and travelled around the beautiful islands

I have been looking forward to sailing the new TR-6 race sails, and when I finally got them I left for the South of France to get them out there and testing boards for Fanatic. It was a nice drive down to the Mediteranean, seeing the weather change to spring time along the way. In Port la Nouvelle near to Leucate and at Fos in the Marseille area there was wind for some good sessions and could get initial testing done. Good to see its possible the gear keeps getting faster and faster! From last year it seems the balance of our sails improved a lot and the sails feel more neutral and rigging effortlessly with less downhaul. Our sails look very clean and the camber rotation is even more perfect, due to the change in sleeve material which stretches and gives better tension. That is very noticeable in the gybes for easy cam rotation and sailing comfortably.

Look forward to the season as the PWA freestyle kicks off in Austria in April and then the first Slalom event will be in Korea in May after photo shooting and training on Maui.

March I had a great month sailing on Bonaire and traveling to Aruba. Let me first start with Bonaire.

We had many windsurfers from Europe coming to Bonaire to train and to just enjoy our great freestyle conditions. We had people from Italy, Holland, Bulgaria, Germany, and Denmark and also we had Steven van Broeckhoven came over for 3 weeks. He’s been sailing great. Nick (Fanatic/Mauisails) was also here giving private freestyle lessons to some tourists and I saw him sailing quite a lot.

Uhmm, we had like seven days with very light wind in the morning, but the wind always did kick in around five o’clock so it was just perfect to do a two hour afternoon session with the guys, as I am mostly working in the morning at the windsurf school. When there’s no wind I usually go ride on my ATV and do some crazy stuff with a friend and my brother. We don’t do this very often as I am really into spending most of my time sailing and improving my air freestyle moves.

In the middle of March, Sara Quita’s mother contacted me asking If I would like to come Aruba, as she was organizing a kite big jump and windsurf slalom event for the Aruba kids and she would like for me to be part off it and also to give a freestyle show. I SAID, "YES I"LL BE THERE!"

So Steven V.B and Quincy joined me and we flew to Aruba for three days and were part of this great event organized by Saraquita’s mother, Esther. The wind was blowing 35knots all the three days we were there. It was nice to be in Aruba and also to be able to sail with the 4.4 Loco... it was SICK :)

After Aruba I got back on Bonaire to sail for another week with 4.8 Loco and then on the 30th of March I had to pack my stuff to catch my flight to Maui. It was a long flight with a ten hour stay in L.A. I got me a hotel room and took a shower and had a nice six hour sleep. Then I got back on the plane and took that five and half hour flight to Maui.

So here I am for the Starboard photoshoot and also for the Mauisails sails test and photoshoot. Well catch you all on the next Issue.

Maui gets

busy

There’s plenty of excitement brewing on the beach here on Maui as most of the world’s best sailors arrive for the annual product photo shoots. It’s great to have Peter and Taty here early this year as we have already had some good sailing sessions together at Hookipa as well as plenty of discussion about sails. Peter has given some very positive feedback on the

Page 15: Maui Monthly no.59. March 2010

TR-6 race sails as he gets tuned on all the sizes in preparation for the PWA race season. Taty seems pretty stoked on the latest 4.4 Loco prototype that rigs on a 370 mast per his request. Bogo has been busy putting in long hours behind the camera attempting to capture those “perfect moments” on the water.

Thanks to the great sailing conditions that we’ve had on Maui recently we are getting plenty of testing time on all the new prototypes. It is never enough to simply grab a new sample, sail it for half an hour and form an opinion. We always try to get multiple sessions on each size in a variety of conditions while switching off with alternate designs. After we get conclusive test results of the prototype we take the next step of re-cutting the sail if necessary and after seeing and testing the result of the re-cut we finally proceed to the final step of modifying the design file.

Plenty of waves and wind for March. Almost every March is good on Maui. We are so lucky living here, just pick what time of day you want to sail and out the door we go. It was a busy March on Maui, we had Gonzalo here for a week and got stuck into the Formula testing and tuning with him. That was really good, to spent the time with him, getting down to the Harbour early to catch the light breeze. Well, not really that light. A few days we were there on 10m’s getting pick up and spat out on our big fins and Formula boards.

Excitement for all on Maui as was had tsunsani warning one Saturday morning. Just had to head up to Kula for my bike ride that day and by 2.30pm Gonzo and I was in the water testing 12m’s. Actually turned out a perfect day because it’s so hard to get light wind here for testing of the big Formula sizes.

We have started intense testing on the 2011 wave sails as well and Barry and Art have done a great job collecting the feedback and putting in into the new sails. So far so good, they are feeling and performing brilliantly.

As if the sailing isn’t enough for me to do, I’ve been able to fit in some running and triathlon events. I completed my first 5K running race a few weeks ago, in 22 minutes, got third in my age group and recently on the bIg Island I competed another Olympic distance triathlon, beating my previous personal record by 1 minute, in 2 hours 6 minutes.

MauiSails Boom Front End

A good boom is much more than some carbon tubes. The key elements of the whole system are also the length adjustment locking parts, and the boom head that attaches to the mast.

MauiSails frontend fits 37mm or 40mm diameter carbon tubes. Will fit most booms on the market.

You can buy it in MauiSails online store at www.mauisails.com

Wow. March was a blast, literally. I don’t think I have experienced a period on Maui with wind like this March in the thirty-five years I lived here. Every day we woke to hear the palms being blasted with wind before dawn, and then it would just get stronger and stronger. By the end of the month there were several days with steady wind over forty and gusts as high as seventy (!!!) on Maalaea Bay, where the venturi of the island shape compresses the wind into powerful gusts that could literally knock you over. This was all good for Artur to be able to test his small wave sail designs, and we have been lucky to have Casey and Ingrid here as well to put the tiny ones through their paces in real conditions. The 2.9 and 3.5 we developed for high wind locations like the Gorge are now really ready and fully tested. In addition there were some late season swells to keep it interesting and challenging. We watched with interest the Calema Mid-Winters in Florida and saw some great results from Gabriel and Gonzalo, and our new ambassador from San Diego, Lasse Uronen, who did great in the Masters fleet with a new TR-6 11.0. Soon after, the Worlds for Formula were held in Argentina and Marta Hvlaty rewarded us with her third championship in a row. Sadly the fellas had less success in the challenging gusty shifty conditions, but we are still happy to see them out there giving it their all to be in the top group. Personally I have been able to get more evening hours in completing the interior of Cornelia despite the incredible wind in the harbor. Sometimes she would heel over ten degrees in the gusts and pitch me across the cabin while i was driving a screw or trying to paint or glue something. But I have been able to get the main cabin more finished and liveable, created a sealed wet locket that drains into the bilge, made the stove box and hung the stove and nearly finished the galley counter and shelves. With the fresh water pumps now installed it won’t be long before we can make a meal on board in some comfort. The reward was a great day out on the sea with Bogo, Rick, and Peter aboard to do some filming for our 2011 brochure. More coming in the regard as she gets more capable. I’m looking forward to April and the Team all arriving for photos and tuning. Aloha, Barry Spanier
