The Mutant our most progressive 4-battens, ultra-low aspect ratio wave sail

After a short couple of days back in Maui I was straight off to Korea for the second PWA racing event of the year. After not learning much in Italy I was still very confident in all my training and prep work with Phil and the rest of the team at MauiSails and the JP team, just hoping that Korea had more wind. And sure enough it all turned out for the very best!!! Even though I didn’t win a round in Korea I was still consistent enough to take the top spot on the podium and rack up some much needed points for the overall for the year. I am still deep in the overall but I am sure that we will get one throw out and I will be able to discard my result from Italy. With the victory in Korea I was so glad to be able to deliver something this great to JP and it was an especially great honor to deliver something like this to MauiSails in the very early days of my relationship with them.

It was great to get back to Maui and see everyone, my family especially but also everyone at MauiSails and all my friends. I got so many great letters and notes of congratulations I was really blown away. It was a quick and short celebration though as it was straight back to work tuning, training and working out to stay in top shape for the next event, the Maui Race Series. Not really although it is going to be some very good tough racing and some great practice. What I really mean is the next PWA event in Costa Brava, where who knows what the wind will be like, any where from 50+knots to 7 knots is what I have raced in there before.

This year continues to be a very windy year in Maui and May had some of the strongest consecutive days of wind I have seen, many days over 40 knots. I did a lot of tuning with my small TR8’s and my 59 JP and trying to find some magical fins that will make this set up easy to sail and fast in windy conditions. I did even manage a couple of moderate wind days on my big gear, one day at Kanaha and a couple of early morning sessions at our secret spot. Most of the testing time was spent on fins though, I think I tested about 25-30 new fins this month. I also did a couple of buoy sessions with Phil, start practice and race situations. It was also close to time to finalize some of the wave designs so I was lucky enough to get out on some of the new Global’s and Legend’s, not much surf but little bashers that were fun for a change of speed.

It was another quick month and I can’t believe it is already over and almost time to head back to Europe and another race. I think that May was again another very productive and satisfying month, more fuel in the tank to get back out on the race course. Time to get back on the water and keep trying to improve.

KOREA 3RD - 11TH MAYIt was my first time traveling and competing in Korea. such a long & tiring travel from Austria to Korea, but well it was well organize once arriving in Korea. Competing in korea was just a big mess for me, first day couldn’t really got my act together had an early start then crashed then just bad start etc etc. everything was kinda like going bad in the first days, but after wards got my act together but was already to late to have a top 16 finish.

BONAIRE 13TH - 18TH MAYAfter Korea I flew back to bonaire where I stayed for just 5 days and the best thing was that arriving back on the bonaire and the wind was great, Loco 5.2 even 4.4 conditions for 3 days :). I sailed all the 5 days I was back on bonaire/curacao, was just super good to be back and sailing in my boardshort and on my freestyle equipment. Yes :).

CURACAO With my short 5 day stay on the Bonaire I flew for 2 days to Curacao, to be able to compete in the 2012 Curacao challenge which was a 4 days event but only manage to compete for 2 days in the slalom as I had to fly back to Europe. Well the event started on thursday with 6 races a day 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. I manage to win 9 races, out of 12 races which was held on thursday and friday, but as they did more slalom races in the weekend i finished 7th. I was on my TR 6.6 and my isonic 107 for all the races.


GREECE 20TH - 27TH MAYOn the 19th of May i flew back to Holland to meet with the mystic team on the 20th to take the flight to Greece for the 2013 Mystic summer collection photoshoot. Never been to Greece before and it was just the BEST photoshoot I have ever been to this far, we had a one week stay on a yacht which we every day went to different location spot island and did allot of shooting for the mystic collection, I also had one day of sick sailing on my loco 4.4 it was windy as hell, damn. Greece is a amazing place and they have so many location for windsurfing but the only thing you can only get there by boat. Overall I am just happy and grateful to be part of the Mystic photoshoot and great to know more places on this planet :).

BONAIREBack on Bonaire on the 29th was just an amazing arrival, The wind was howling but couldn’t windsurf as I arrive to late, so the next day the wind was still howling and looking at the forecast it would be windy for the whole week and more, I rigged my 4.4 Loco and it felt just so freaking good to be back from europe and be able to sail on such small sail. I have or am sailing the whole day that i even forgot to write this report.

But I am having such a great time and I am sailing a lot.

My next PWA event will be in Costa Brava slalom, I did some slalom sailing but I prefer more the freestyle gears.

The Mutant

After a pretty busy month of April doing photoshoots, Casey, Ingrid and I went to Santa Cruz for the first stop of the AWT. i was so exited to finally compete with all my new MauiSails gear and to try the Mutant in different condition. We all arrived one day before and that was perfect to get used to the spot and the gear because everyone was sailing and we were pushing each other.

FIRST CONTESTI was feeling pretty good in my head and with the gear but you know how the contests are; I missed the semi-final by a couple little points and unfortunately the conditions went down for the double elimination so we didn’t finish it. i have to say, it was frustrating for me because i really wanted to have this second chance. So in the end I finished in 5th place but I’m happy with this result because the level of this contest was pretty high.

My girlfriend was there too so when the contest was done we took couple days to visit a friend in San Francisco. We took the road along the coast from Davenport to SF. It was our first time in California and we really enjoyed it, and SF is the most European city in the USA.


After this little tourist trip for couple days in SF it was time to come back in Guadeloupe. It’s always nice to come back home after one month and a half. Since then I take care of my local sponsors here. Conditions were not so good so I sailed just once and the rest of the time i have a special training with my coach in Guadeloupe to be ready for the next event. Beside that, waves are not so bad so I go surf almost everyday. At least I’m in the water and I feel much better after a surfing session.

Back on the mainland and back in action, May was a traveled filled month with some amazing windsurfing sessions at some of the regular spots, as well as some new adventures!

Last month I sent in my newsletter from Santa Cruz, CA, as I was getting ready for the American Windsurfing Tour event at Waddell Creek. We had excellent conditions for the first stop of the AWT, and with top PWA pro’s and veterans alike, the entire crew put on an amazing show for the locals on the west coast who hadn’t seen that much talent and energy in windsurfing displayed in their backyard for quite some time. I had a great time wavesailing back at Waddell, awesome, awesome spot and I can’t wait to return; but during my first heat of the comp I didn’t sail as well as I would have liked, and with a stacked bracket including teammate Camille Juban, did not advance through. On the second day I was able to fight my way up through the losers bracket, but will be looking forward to hopefully a better finish next month at Pistol. EPIC MAY


A quick 11-hour drive back to Hood River and it was time to unpack, repack, and head back to the airport for Green Bay, Wisconsin, for a windsurfing project that I had been asked to help out with. I will get to the project in just a minute, but with a 4.2 Mutant still in my van, which the guys in Maui had been so kind to send to Waddell for Ingrid and I to use for the AWT, I kept a close eye on the hatch before I had to leave, dying to take it out. The day before I left my prayers were answered and I had a solid afternoon session with the 4.2. At first it was a little light so I rode my freestyle 90L and had a great session, the compact power and agility got me up and going no problem, and for freestyle the sail felt phenomenal with controlled, direct pop and power, and smooth transitions through the spin moves. As the afternoon continued the wind picked up a notch and I went down to my Pocket 80L. Most guys were rigging 4.0-4.2 at this point, so I added about 1cm of outhaul and the Mutant felt great. Spin loops on a 4.2 that has a luff of 355 is just awesome, first of all it feels easier, but at the same time the sensation of rotating through the forward somehow feels amplified, you just have to try one to know! Needless to say I missed the dropoff time at the FedEx store, but had a smile on my face ear-to-ear as I dropped off the sail, perhaps still a little damp, at the FedEx Hood River shipping warehouse later that evening. All in all I can’t wait to get my hands on my new quiver of Mutants, and if you’re reading this and see my van anywhere, ask me anytime to take one for a spin!

Ok, back to the windsurfing project and Green Bay part after that slight tangent on my Mutant session at the hatch. I was saying how I was on my way to Green Bay, WI, for a windsurfing project.

About two months ago, Martin Lenny, Kai Lenny’s father, and I met about a project he and Kai were working on for Kai’s RedBull webisode series, Positively Kai. In 2010, Kai attempted to cross Lake Michigan but the wind did not cooperate and the mission was called off, but the time had come for Kai to take on the challenge once again. My good friend, business partner at EpicSesh, and MauiSails rider David Troup, is a Wisconsin native who knows all the best WI spots and the forecasts that make them fire like the back of his hand, making him the easy choice for local logistics. With that being the case, I was on my way to WI to help out Dave and be on hand for any support Kai would need during the crossing, windsurfing wise. On the first day that I arrived we had a fun 7.0, 7.6 slalom sesh right off of Dave’s backyard in the bay of Green Bay, and I could already tell this was going to be a great trip. That night, the 7-day forecast showed a solid storm coming with strong South Winds for the Door County area, and Dave made the call that the following Friday would be the day. Me the skeptic, and abiding by Murpy’s law, did not give in to the optimistic promises of Dave’s forecasting, but I went along with the prediction anyways and made the call to the crew, who began prepping to head out to WI by the following Thursday.

One of the last items I had to track down for the crossing was a Naish SUP race board, if the wind died, Kai was getting over to Michigan no matter what! After making a couple phone calls I wound up on the southern end of Lake Winnebago in Fon Du Lac, WI, at Wind Power Windsurfing & Kitesurfing center www.windpowerwindsurfing.com


Kevin, the owner, is one of those dudes that the second you meet him you know he’s awesome, and that if you’re lucky enough, you’ll probably get to hear some incredible windsurfing tales. Well, I was lucky, and sure enough Kevin offered me a beer and invited me into his shop, which besides being stocked with current wind/kite/sup gear, has some relics that you would not believe. The first thing I saw was a rack that contained if not the largest, probably the most complete collection, of US-based windsurfing magazines I’d ever seen, dating back to well before I was born! He had to pry me out of there to take me back to his warehouse where, as he put it, they could definitely open the Smithsonian of windsurfing. Most of the gear I didn’t even recognize, but hearing him and Dave talk of the good old days was pretty enjoyable nonetheless. Through Kevin’s shop and school, hundreds, if not thousands of local water enthusiasts, continue to enjoy endless competitions, regardless of if the lake is in a liquid or solid state, and WindPower continues to see countless youths, from local programs that Kevin coordinates with, come through their doors to learn how to windsurf, kite, SUP, and sail. I had a great visit with Kevin and hope to get back down to Lake Winnebago in the fall for some epic sessions!


With the board in hand we said our goodbyes and headed home to make the final preparations for the crossing, and departed the following evening for Sturgeon Bay, WI. As we rolled into town and met up with Kai and the rest of the team, grey skies and light rain greeted our crew and I became slightly worried that my skepticism might have gotten the better of the forecast. But I kept my mouth shut and low and behold on the next morning, as Dave had predicted almost a week out, we were welcomed at 5:00am with blue skies and a nice southerly breeze. The crossing went off without a hitch and Kai was able to make the 57mi journey from Sturgeon Bay, WI, to Frankfort, MI, in about 2:40min. With the main objective in the bag and the forecast still looking good, it was time to roll out and discover some local spots in Door County for the rest of weekend. The Wisconsin weather continued to deliver and I had two great days of slalom sessions on my TR-8 7.0 at Bailey’s Harbor and Anclam. Sick spots with amazing people, the stoke factor in Da’ Sconce is as good as it gets! Kai and the crew departed at the end of the weekend, and after a couple more days at EpicSession’s HQ in Green Bay, I packed up and headed home to Hood River just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. The packed parking lot at Doug’s on Sunday was a testament to the incredible conditions we had all weekend, and a strong kickoff to what is hopefully going to be a very windy summer here in the gorge!

What a windy season it has been. I must have used a 4.2 more times this year than in the last 15. That may have something to do with being so stoked on the new 4.2 Ghost-XT and 4.2 Mutant sails too.

We have been very busy completing the 2013 Wave-Freestyle sail lines and they are now in production. Development wise it has been a season of both radical new ideas and continuous refinement of established ones. We have gone through all the wave ranges with a fine-toothed comb tuning the shaping characteristics to ensure perfectly balanced tension and progressive leech response throughout the size range. We have also incorporated an original new, light-weight gradient x-ply into the sail ranges. The material sits mid way between the standard 5-mil and the ultra-light Technora in terms of weight and has excellent durability. It also has an exclusive MauiSails designed colour gradient effect that gives it a very distinct and striking appearance. The 2013 sail lines also incorporate brighter, more contrasting colour schemes that helps them stand out on the water even more.

Our highly successful, ultralight Ghost-XT returns for it’s fourth season, lighter than ever with increased use of Technora and strategic trimming of patches and reduction in the number of unnecessary seams. Durability has been 100% maintained, we just trimmed the excess fat to make it leaner and meaner than ever. After many requests we have also added a sick new 4.2 design to the Ghost-XT range.

WHAT YOU CAN EXCPECT FROM

2013 WAVE SAILS


Our flagship side-shore wave sail, the Legend has undergone a size by size tune up and is a meticulously refined, perfectly balanced machine. With extensive use of the new light weight gradient-x-ply in the upper sail body, the Legend has very light handling and excellent response on the wave.

The Global onshore, power wave sail has been adjusted to maintain full power but improve handling through a slightly shorter boom and raised foot. The Global also incorporates extensive use of the light weight Gradient X-ply, giving it a lighter feel.

Working together with Taty Frans, we went through the Loco freestyle sail range and tuned the shaping to improve leech tension and give the sails more responsive and lighter handling. Luff curves and shaping have also been refined for maximum “pop”. The 4.0 and 4.4 now have slightly shorter luff lengths through the use of a fixed top head.

Our popular Switch model has also been updated with the new light weight Gradient x-ply and it’s great combination of speed and bump and jump ability make it a very versatile design.

Of course, the ultra low aspect ratio Mutant is one of our most exciting developments this season and the full size range, including the previously unreleased 3.8 and 5.6 sizes will now be available. The Mutant combines excellent range with low end power comparable to a sail about about a quarter square meter bigger with ridiculous maneuverability and excellent drive for the most progressive modern wave style.

Wow! May was even more great than April. Starting off the month with Micah’s win got things going on the right foot. Art is always pushing the envelope for wave sail and freestyle final designs and the lift of digging up winners really boosts his energy. And he realy needed the extra jam because his house was giving him troubles... came home to find his electrical connection from the street shooting flames, lost a huge tank of propane due to a hole in a pipe, not to mention end of school year and a very active young girl on his hands :). You will get the reward of his tenacity and design sensitivity if you can get ahold of the TR-8s that are getting lots of attention world-wide, and now the new Mutant wave sails that will make you smile.

Here on Maui we welcomed Todd McFarland to the MauiSail race team in the over 60 group. He has just recently converted his race quiver and in the weekend races at the end of the month he got a string of bullets to take his divisions. I think he would agree there was some considerable improvement in results. And having Micah get the tight practise session before departure to the World Cup event in Costa Brava felt right too.

I’m looking forward to the long summer days so the light hangs in there for those extra hours of boat work in the evening. The stainless tube dodger frame is now ready for a skin, and the batteries are much happier being connected to a simple inexpensive solar panel. The big job of the month involved taking the headstay loose, cutting four inches off, reset the end fitting and retune the rig. the headstay was just too long to properly tension the rig... and we all know what good rig tension can do for your day of sailing. We also managed one of those sailing days, and were seranaded by BobbiJo Curley and her travel harp www.harpsingerbobbiejo.com Now that was ethereal.

It’s been an exciting month with Micah winning the World Cup in Korea and being rewarded for all his hard work. You do have to realize it is very hard to win a World Cup slalom event and it doesn’t come easy, only hand full of people have done it in the past few years, but when you train hard, set realistic goals, break down the details and believe, great things can happen. Micah proved this in Korea, while starting out the regatta rather slow, he continued to stay consistent and eventually it came down to the final race of the regatta and he proved he’s a worthy Champion by getting the job done.

But victory and greatness happens much easier when people work together and create self perpetuating momentum. This is proven time and time again, so we strive each day at MauiSails to improve and work on the details of the game. Ok, that is my rant for May…….

So what have we been doing in May? Finalizing the wave sails for production has been an exciting project and once again Art and Barry have come up with some refinements that have improved the sails in all areas, so we look forward to the coming months as our customers get to enjoy the fruits of our labor. And obviously the other things we have been doing is training, continuing to work on the small details with Micah and prepare him for the next battle in Costa Brava as well as the rest of the year.
