"As a destination I can highly recommend Vietnam, as a tropical location, I would go there on a holiday. Especially for windsurfing as the trade winds seem to be consistent and even though the forecast was bad for the 5 days of the Slalom, we still completed 4 rounds of which 2 where in 15-25 knots. Yo Friends, It’s been a great month, Bonaire had some great freestyle conditions mostly 4.8 loco and flare 88. We had like 2 weeks straight wind knots at 20 and as most of the guys came to bonaire to train and get their level up for he first PWA GRAND SLAM event in VIETNAM.

I really did use my 4.8 alot as I knew this would be the sail size that is going to be most use in Vietnam and combining this with the flare 88 is the perfect setup. NO DOUBT!!

The 20th of February Tonky and I step in KLM flight to began our 2 days journey to Vietnam. Had a 8 hour stay in amsteram before our next flight to Bangkok. With the 8hours I had in Amsterdam, it gave me time to visit my clothing sponsor Mystic which is located 30 minuuts from the Aiport. Receive the new 2011 mystic apparells and harness is just great.

Windy on Bonair and in VietnamAt 19:30 i got to the gate while Tonky was no where to be found, I had the option to stay and pay for a new ticket or just leave and maybe Tonky could get the next flight to bangkok then Vietnam. Arriving i Bangkok all by myself I imediatly check my emails and i receive emails from Tonky that he has missed the flight due to being at the wrong gate :(. I was worried because all the windsurf bags where tagged and check in on his name.

Well he had to rebook and pay for the ticket and again for the Bags. He told me it was a nightmare but i guess this is what you get by making mistakes. But in the end he got to Vietnam day after I have arrived so I was more relax when I knew he arrive and also the bags.

Competing against the best in what i believe is the most dificult conditions i have ever compete in was just insane and hardcore. Everyone was having a hard time, everyone was crashing but in the end the one who had been more consistance was always on top. I believe a third place finish for me in Vietnam grand slam is a well deseve one and i am super happy with this:)

Now i will compete in slalom and i really hope to get a top 16 results. It’s been 2 years I haven’t compete in slalom so i really can expect the other guys to be way better then 2 years ago. All I know that the TR7 are really good and fast sails, just on the 28 of february I was testing the 5.9 on my Isonic 87 and I had really good board speed and the sail felt like a feather, way easier to handle and it’s just another level of sail. Great job Barry, Art,Phil.

It is always sweet to arrive back on the island of Maui but this is the earliest I have ever been in the season. I stayed in Kuau, one of my favorite places on the island and very central. It took a while to get set up, as I plan to spend a few months here I decided to buy some wheels so had to find a cheap but reliable car. Kind of nice for a change to get your friends to drive you around! But even better to be independent again, once I found a perfect maui cruiser, plymouth van running great, with air conditioning, tunes and plenty space for some of my windsurf gear, that will get me from A to B.

The long anticipated TR-7 production race sails arrived during the month of February by air freight on Maui. Size by size I could try them at least once and so far have been impressed with the performance. We seem to have an impressive set of sails here! They are feeling supremely stable and the mid leech is holding solidly, making for a well balanced and fast sail with great handling. I would say its been a massive improvement! I was most impressed with the speed, acceleration and ease of use as well as the wind range, seemingly planing quicker then other sails. Now this is going to be my 3rd year on Maui Sails and these are a kind of magic!

As well as my boards I took a road bike to Maui and rode around the west maui mountains on a beautiful kona day, 5 hours on the bike 120 km. Whales breaching everywhere was a breath taking spectacle and the scenery was stunning. Another time I joined Phil for a ride to Lahaina and back, it was fun but he kicked my ass! Good to ride with a charger like Phil who sets a high pace and motivates you to go harder. Its so good to get more fit again. Training with a personal trainer definitely helped feeling a bit more explosive on the water. When you get into your routine of getting fit, you also start eating really well and it just feels great. The occasional wave sailing day and a bit of surf time too, although I been having an ear infection (swimmers ear). Clean swells pounded the north shore, making Hookipa look like the north shore of Oahu.

To find steady wind was difficult sometimes and we had to chase the wind around a lot between the north and the south shores to get our sails wet; Couple challenging moments launching the spanking new race gear at Hookipa and that made it all the more exciting to prepare for the race event in Vietnam.

Can’t complain really. Sure, it hasn’t been the best wind conditions over the last month, but nonetheless, it feels like time flies by every minute I’m over here.

February - I guess this is what they call winter on Maui?


Over the last month we’ve seen all sorts of weather, from relentless rain and blinding-bright lightning storms in the middle of the night, to the whole island being enveloped in VOG, which was a new experience for me (not to stoked about that one either). Through the changing weather, the waves still seemed to always roll through, and in spite of the randomness of it all, we managed to get a couple days a week of good wavesailing. I used my 5.0 Ghost for most of my sessions and I gotta admit I still haven’t had a bad day with that rig. So light and well-balanced, with good low end to pump onto sets in almost no wind, the Ghost just does it all so effortlessly, and makes what should be sketchy sessions a blast! Ingrid was killing it as usual on her 4.5 Legend, as a smaller female, the 4.5 is her biggest sail. Even when it looks practically glassy, she manages to cruise through mast high sets, and still feel comfortable with the ‘larger’ rig on the wave. Art was also out pretty much every good day this month killing it!

With multiple day periods of no wind, we still scored some sick surf sessions as well, glassy, solid rides, while the humpbacks jumped just outside the break.

Hopefully with March we will see a change back to more consistent trades, but we’ll have to wait and see. I’m stoked to hopefully do more slalom and freestyle as well as wavesailing this month, just crossing my fingers that the wind delivers! Already we’ve had one good day, and today (as I write this a little late), I got out to sail my first Kona day on Maui, which was sick!

The past month has seen a good mix of conditions on Maui. There have been periods of no wind but there have also been some epic days. The best days offered up somewhat challenging conditions as big northerly swell would go together with light, very offshore wind. On one of the bigger days, timing and wave selection were quite critical to avoid getting in a bad spot, stuck in front of a monster closeout set with no wind. There was definitely an element of strategy involved in getting out as you scan the horizon for large swell bumps and try to calculate if you have enough time to get to the outside in sub-planing conditions before the next big set jacks up. The reward was well worth it after getting some long rides on super clean, over-mast bombs.

We’ve been getting plenty of water time on the new Ghost-XT and Legend samples and have already started moving on to the next step in further refining them. So far, the new samples seem to be allowing for even better mobility on the wave as well as great range and pumping ability. I’m excited for the next big swell with stronger wind so that we can spend more time on the smaller sizes and continue the design evolution.

This month has been going along quite nicely with the race sail testing continuing to show great speed, especially in the mid-range sizes. Art has been gaining ground with the wave sails too and while I watch them perform, the new aspect ratio looks super logical and upwind and speed performance is gaining a notch. But the big story this month came to me via Skype from our good friend, Mike Coker, the marketing and web genius behind the early Gaastra effort by The Team. Mike’s office is/was in the block between the cathedral and the TV sation in Christchurch, New Zealand. He described... "felt like a sonic boom, hit me right in the chest... then the floor (second floor office) tipped about twenty degrees and i slid across with my desk. I figured this wasn’t so good, so I grabbed my bacpack shoved my laptop inside and headed for the door. Just then, the brick building next door seemed to fall through the ceiling and windows. Ran down the central stairwell and onto the street. That was about thirty seconds. Then the street began to look like the ocean, with waves, and soon it was cracking under our feet. Shit was falling all around us from everywhere. Then this gray goo began to ooze from the cracks and eventually got about 15cm deep. I walked away and went to see if I still had a house and family."

Mike’s OK. The twins and Caroline are fine. No power or water and aftershocks 40 times a day.

There is nothing in the way of problems that any of us have that will come close to what these folks have just gone through. I guess it’s closer to me because of our work connection, after all, there are plenty of troubles in Haiti and Chile too. We are blessed to be able to do our work and live the way we can here. This month, my mom, Cornelia, (she’s 95) came back to Maui again to make sure she got on the boat and went sailing with the whales. She is determined to keep enjoying everything she can. With the help of a step ladder, she was able to climb aboard on the pulpit and got to drive the boat in sterling conditions. Lots of smiles from the young people who came along to make it easy on us all. And now mom says she wants to come back and do it some more! We should all be so lucky and fit. Aloha, Barry Spanier


Last February was windy, this February was light winds, so it was time to chase wind around to some odd locations and crawl out to the wind line off Hookipa in East winds. So there was sailing, but mostly light wind stuff, but good quality light wind enables you to work on efficiency and gets you thinking differently about technique, sail and board combinations, fins and bottom end power.

We are currently also working on the 2012 wave sails, so it’s exciting to work with Art and Barry and collectively come up with a better overall sail for next year. Most of the time the race sail leads the way in overall concepts then we work out how to apply these concepts to the other sails in our line. So we are working on shorter luff lengths, lower aspect ratio without loosing the maneuverability that a wave sail should deliver.

Lets see? Oh yeh, I ran a half Marathon in Wailea, and achieved my personal record of 1 hour 40 minutes, happy I’m not slowing down with age.
