Felt like only last weekend was the first Maui slalom series but it was actually on the 2nd of June and it was a great start to the summer racing. I missed Phil while he was over on the Big Island doing a tri-athalon with Lance, Maui Sails did well though showing that the sails are the best sails by far for the windy Maui conditions.

After that it was a last week of training and tuning some bigger gear to go to the PWA race in Costa Brava. I had a couple good days getting some start and buoy practice in with Phil and some of the other local Maui Sails riders as well as JP team mate Pieter Bijl. I was also doing some work on fins trying to find some last minute magic to gain some edge for Spain. We didn’t get much light wind testing done since it continued to blow like crazy in Maui but again a couple of early sessions and some short ones at Kanaha we got it done. I felt pretty tuned and recharged ready to go for Costa Brava.

Unfortunately I pretty much fizzled in CB as I could never really get into a nice groove with crashes and bad gear choices and holes at marks but I guess I at least saved some face by winning the last round in style. Didn’t really improve my overall finish but at least jumped me into the top eight which is not to bad considering how most of the event went. I flew straight back to Maui through London and LA and without any gear this makes traveling a dream, customs was smooth as could be expected for customs and I crashed hard the last leg of the journey so it felt like I was home in no time.

I did miss the second Maui Slalom while I was in Costa Brava but Phil dominated our age group and the open as did the rest of the Maui Sails team so it was good to see we were still flying high on Maui. Phil also organized a free racing clinic at Kanaha for the weekend between the second and third Maui race series. We had a very good turn out with lots of locals and visitors taking advantage of the time to spend with Phil and myself. With average weather for the day we managed to do a good talk session with Q and A at the end and then a good four hours of start and buoy practice with the group. Broken into two groups of about 10 people in each I would guess we did about 25 starts in each group, it was great practice for me as well and good fun with a great group of people.

In between all the racing, travel, clinics, training and practice I also had some good fun with my family enjoying the summer off with them trying to get the kids into new things and keep them busy and active. Lance did a very nice basketball camp put on by NBC camps, he was able to meet some NBA pro’s as well as learn some new skills and some valuable lessons, he is really enjoying his summer off of school so far. K.C. has also been very busy with friends and the swimming pool, she definitely loves the water and is getting more and more comfortable with it swimming like a fish. Dakotah is now 11 months old and has just started walking, a good two months ahead of her older brother and sister, I think she is going to be the real athlete of the family!!!!

Finally it was the last day of the month and the third Maui Race series of the year. It turned out to be another great Maui windy day, racing on 7.0 and 6.6 all day the competition was a bit stronger this race. With Phil back in town and Pieter Bijl back after some strong results in Costa Brava and the local hot shots, Dan and Peter as well as a bunch of other Japanese and Kiwi pros it was a big turn out. Phil definitely pushed me the hardest winning the first race of the day but I managed to come back with some good starts and some timely gybes to take the next three in our age group and win the first battle. The afternoon was the pro’s and after a one heat qualifier the next three heats were some good battles to the first mark, I didn’t want to push the start to hard as there would be no throw out with only three races to count so I held back, stayed patient and picked some good tight lines in the gybes to take another three bullets and win the afternoon pros as well.

It was certainly an action packed June, but it did go by in what felt like a week. Now on to July for more training, racing and travel. Somewhere in here there is going to be something like a break, but for now it is full speed ahead!!!

Ola mis amigos, Que tal que tal?

June did treat me great. My traveling this month has been a bit less then my previous months but still been really busy with windsurfing, traveling, and more.

June did bring super windy conditions for Bonaire. I have been sailing a lot on my 4.4 Loco, and testing and practicing was a great part of my time on Bonaire after Greece. The new Loco are just amazing. After all those years of adjusting and finding the right balance for the sail, I finally got all the sizes where I want them and the way I wanted them to function. All I can say is we’ve got some pretty SSSIIICCCKKK freestyle sails, and you won’t be disappointed when you purchase one.

My trip to Costa Brava was a success, I first traveled to Marseille where I met with Cedric Bordes. I also stayed at his house for two days and it was perfect place for relaxation before starting to compete in the 3rd PWA SLALOM EVENT of this season, Cedric and I drove from Marseille to Costa Brava and that was faster than I expected. It was pretty nice and great to have some friends on the tour who are willing to help:) Thank you, Cedric.

My overall impression from Costa Brava PWA event I would say this. As far as the level of slalom, it’s pretty high because everyone got better throughout the years. There’s no place for mistakes, even though sometimes you can be lucky if someone does a mistake at the jibing mark or get some PMS(over earlie) like me. But other than that, the level is high, because everyone pretty much has the same speed. It’s like a super battle, but a battle is good and in the end the one who is more consistent will always be on top.

As far as myself, I am pretty happy with my results in Costa Brava and the 10th place finish is great for me. Even though I have some PMS and some late starts I would say that my speed compared to other is really great and in each event I am learning more and I am getting better. I only struggle when the wind is light due to not having good fins but as soon the wind picks up and I am powered up on my TR-8 6.6 and smaller then I am on my game.

If I have to say something about the TR-8 sails: I am in love with all the sail sizes I have chosen for the season: the 8.4 was one of the sails that I would have thought I would never need, but then I used it on the last day of the event and this sail just works superb. The speed and handling is just amazing, the sails just fly.

Going down to the 7.6 I Love this size. I could handle this sail even if the wind get’s 25 knots. I remember one race I was heading out with the 7.6 and just before the start the wind got super strong and I was pretty much getting overpowered but still I felt pretty comfortable. And this race elimination I used the 7.6 the whole time and I went to the winners final. It’s not a matter that I didn’t win the winners final but it’s just that feeling of this sail is so amazing that it just makes you want to keep going at it, until one day you have the whole ingredients that I will start being on the top. :). As far the smaller size 6.6 and 5.9 I am hoping to get more sailing on these in Fuerteventura and see how they work.

Getting back on Bonaire the wind was blowing and my first day I sailed directly back on my 4.4 Loco as I missed freestyle so much, and some days I got on the 5.2 Loco. It is just amazing how great my gear feels. I am just happy to be having such great equipment.

I stayed three days on Bonaire, then Kiri, Bjorn, Patun, Elvis, and I flew to Aruba to meet up with the directors of Children of the Wind, so that we can be present for the ARUBA 2012 FILM FESTIVAL and this was the PREMIER of our DOCUMENTARY for CHILDREN OF THE WIND. We walked the Red Carpet and got interview by HBO, LATINO, BBC, and I can’t remember all those names,

but there were 5 or 6 of the international news channels. It was a big event Festival and as we were walking the red carpet I felt like this is how it feels to be a star, :).

At this Film festival I met actors and actresses that I have only seen on TV but we all walked the same carpet. And they were so interested to see our documentary but as it was sold out for two days straight it was impossible for them to watch it. We got voted and won the audience awards for our documentary CHILDREN OF THE WIND. This is a big award, so our next film festival will be in AMSTERDAM, then TORONTO, and so on. I am so happy with this and this could be a major boost for each one of us who was in this film, plus good for Bonaire.

On Sunday the 24th we had a photoshoot plus filming for the international press and film crew of the Aruba Film Festival, the wind was howling and we did an hour long shoot and filming on the water with Kiri, Quincy, and I busting high moves in front of the press and crew. They were amazed and screaming and cheering for us.

This will be good for the sport of windsurfing. I was back on Bonaire the 25th, got directly on the water the next day to keep practicing my freestyle, and just still feeling the excitement of our documentary film. I’ve been sailing an hour a day on my slalom equipment and i feel that it’s going good:).

My next flight will be to FUERTEVENTURA. I just booked my ticket so I am almost ready for that intense windy competition. Just waiting on the day to fly.

As I am a team rider and also a distributor for MauiSails for the ABC Islands, MauiSails and I decided to expand the national team and signed on team SEAVAL from Curacao. These two kids have been busting moves and been on top of their game for a period of time that is well respected and so with such talent,

they are welcome with open hand in the National MauiSails team. The future is bright for these two youngsters, welcome aboard guys :)

My name is Felix Martina, I’m 18 years old from Curacao! Born on January 10th 1994.I started windsuring 6 years ago when I was 12 years old. I started surfing because I saw some friends of mine do it too. I saw Ingmar (owner of Windsurfing Curacao) doing cool tricks on the water; jumping around and going really fast. I thought by myself, ’I want to be able to do that, I’m sure I can..’ So I started windsurfing.. and fell in love with the wind and water provided to me for windsurfing sessions.

I never had any better feeling in my life than just being upside down, holding my sail, making sure I land properly and slide throughout the move! So I dedicated myself to performing the best I can and it got me this far. I still seek for higher standards! News about me.. I have been to a lot of international windsurfing competitions such as Cabarete Classic, Prokids Bonaire, Aruba Hiwinds and the PWA. I’ve won a lot of prizes and those prizes also keep me surfing a lot! I became Prince of the Huts in Aruba for 2 years in a row and am striving for a King of the Huts this year since I turned 18.

I chose Maui Sails, not only because one of my heroes (Taty) surfs with this team, but also because of it’s great quality and amazing performance! I feel a lot of power coming out center of my sail and I plane easily! I love the way it’s built; it fits perfectly. Going into my tricks I feel way more confident, because of the weight of the sail! It’s so light, yet so sturdy and maneuverable! That’s all you need when you’re freestyling! This, is why I love my new MauiSails Loco sail!

My name is Kaj van der Lubbe, I’m 15 years old, and I was born on Curacao on April 2, 1997. I started windsurfing when I was 10 years old, so I have been doing it for 5 years already. Many of my friends were already windsurfing which was a reason for me to try it out and after my first lesson I was hooked and wanted to go "free surfing" without any lessons whenever I could.

By the time I had my own set, everyone was freestyling and to me that looked like the coolest thing I had ever seen! I immediately started Freestyle as well and quickly got the hang of it. Soon after it would look like I was dancing all over the place, but I was actually practicing the movement of the trick that I was learning at the time.

I have competed in many windsurfing competitions like, Bonaire Prokids, Aruba High Winds, and many local competitions like the Curacao Challenge. Constantly making it to the podium motivated me to continue to uphold my title and improve my Freestyle skills. My next destination will be Aruba where I will be competing for Prince of the Huts since I have turned 15 this year. I will also be going to Bonaire again soon and hopefully there will be some nice wind for all of us.

Before, I had never sailed with a MauiSails sail, but after hearing all of the great feedback from friends, and seeing that Taty Frans was sailing with them, I figured they must be awesome. So I gave it a shot and was convinced. Sailing with my own MauiSails gear now, I feel more confident going into bigger moves that I know I can now control more easily. I feel lots of power coming from the sail and it sails extremely smooth. Having such light and strong gear will definitely help me improve in my windsurfing career. Thank you Maui Sails!!

In the begening of June I was still in Guadeloupe surfing a little and espacialy, physical training with my coach in Guadeloupe. The problem in Guadeloupe at this time of the year it’s that ther no condition at all, so once I took care of the local sponsors and I did everything I had to do I went to south west of france to Hossegor.

It’s a famous for the good surfing and that where my good friend Jean Baptiste Caste is living. JB use to be a pro winsurfer and performed in 2008 in PWA Cabo Verde event and finishing 13°.

This place is good for surfing, it’s not often but it can be good for sailing too, I sailed two times; one time it was side-shore wind with about 1m beach break waves where i could lend two 360 and the other time the wind was stronger but complilty one shore but I still could manage to do some wave riding, back loop and tweaked pushloop. With JB we also do some Brasilian Jui Jitsu two times a week and this is also really good for the physical training. Unfortunately no one was there to take picture but this is gonna change because I went to visite my sister who’s living one hour from Hossegor. She is now physiotherapist but she use to be really good in surfing and windsurfing, she used to be French junior champion. It’s my birthday on June 30th so I got a gopro as a gift from here and the rest of my familly and I hope i’m gonna use it everyday.

June definitely did not start out as warm or sunny as many of us would have hoped for here in the Gorge. But in spite of a slow start to the legendary summertime conditions, my calendar was stacked with competitions, and with the arrival of the Mutants this month, I was definitely pumped to get on the water!

A weather system passed through on the first weekend of June bringing one epic day of nuking winds to the eastern gorge. In the corridor, however, thick clouds unfortunately kept the wind from ever fully kicking in for the second Gorge Cup race of the season. We were still able to pull off 7 races and in spite of a having a hard time staying powered through the course on my TR-8 7.0, I managed to end up first in the Men’s Open and third overall on the day. Most of the guys were on much larger sails, and though the low-end on the 7.0 is phenomenal this year, I would have liked to have had a little more power, and am now stoked to have a TR-8 7.6XT in my quiver for the upcoming US nationals at the end of July! Watching for a big day on the water, I hauled-ass right after the race out to Doug’s and had an unreal session on my 3.5 Legend. From 5pm-sunset, I had Doug’s almost to myself, with only a couple of my friends out, logo high swells, and gusts over 50mph!

JUNE… A SLOW START FOR SUMMER, BUT WIND, WAVES, COMPETITIONS, AND GOOD TIMES NONETHELESS!

The 3.5 performed exceptionally, in spite of massive changes in wind speed, the sail coasted through the big holes and held down the blasting gusts with ease. Safe to say I slept like a baby that night!

The following week I packed up and headed south to Gold Beach, OR, for the Pistol River Wave Bash, the second stop of the American Windsurfing Tour. An absolutely breathtaking venue with insane side/side-on conditions, I was stoked to be heading back to this amazing venue and kept my fingers crossed for another round of epic conditions for the contest.

Day 1 of the comp started off slow, but by early afternoon the wind had not only filled in, but had come in strong. Ingrid, competing in both the women’s and men’s amateur division, hit the water first, with both divisions starting right off the bat and the pro heats scheduled to

run later in the afternoon. Ingrid sailed flawlessly. With each competition she gets more and more consistent, and in 12 minutes she hardly misses a beat. After a few women’s heats her performance placed her right at the top of the division by a wide margin, and in the amateur division she made her way through all her heats and into the finals. I hit the water late in the afternoon for my first heat of the pro division. Since the wind had picked up, I decided to go with my 3.7 Legend since it had been working pretty well, and hit the water confident and ready to roll. Though the wind was up, the waves unfortunately weren’t all that big, and I had a hard time lining up any decent waves, and failed to advance out of my heat.

Maui MonthlyOur Experience, Your Reward .31

Page 32: Maui Monthly Newsletter no.86 June 2012

Worse, I actually got last in the heat, and since I was in the only 4-man heat of the pro division, I actually ended up last overall, a great start to the comp! Disappointed in my performance, I was determined to fight my way back and eagerly waited for the double elimination to start.

Conditions on Day 2 were pretty much a repeat of Day 1, getting the riders in the remaining heats of the first round back on the water. In spite of smaller waves the competitors put on a hell of a show, with Levi Siver again finishing on top in first place in the single elimination. Ingrid was on fire, finishing first in the women’s division and an impressive second in men’s amateur.

On Saturday, Day 3, a small SW swell arrived, producing fun chest to overhead clean waves for the start of the double elimination. After a morning session at Cape Sebastian on the 4.2 Mutant, I headed down to Pistol and got ready for my second chance. The wind was pretty solid at the start of the day, and I decided to stick with my 4.2 Mutant for my first heat against Graham Ezzy, Derek Mangan, and Rob Warwick. As the green flag went up for the first heat, it was as if someone turned up the thermostat and turned down the wind. I watched in agony as the guys struggled to stay planing with their smaller sails, and freaked out because I only had my 4.2 rigged and 8 minutes to go. In a mad dash, I bolted back to my van, grabbed my bigger board, and crossed my fingers as I headed out for my first heat. The 4.2 Mutant’s low end-grunt was my ultimate savior, allowing me to blast through the lineup as I pleased, in spite of diminishing winds, and grab enough high scoring waves to advance into the next heat, and I was stoked!

Page 34: Maui Monthly Newsletter no.86 June 2012

With only one heat in between my two, I hoped the wind would stay the same, but it got even lighter as I waited to go back out. I headed back to my van and grabbed the 4.6 Mutant with a few minutes to spare. My next heat was against Tyson Poor, Kevin Pritchard, and Graham Ezzy. The 4.6 felt great, and I had little difficulty staying upwind and in front of the judges tower in spite of even further diminishing winds. I had a lot of fun that heat, grabbing some good waves and landing a back loop and forward, but unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to pass Kevin and Graham, and finished in 3rd. After the first two rounds of the double, the women and amateurs hit the water again, and Ingrid had no problem defending her 1st place position in the women, as well as work her way back through the doubles in the amateur division and again into 2nd place! The organizers smartly decided to wait until Day 4 to host the men’s double final and on Sunday, the anticipated swell finally showed it’s full potential, along with another round of strong wind. The final between Levi and Bernd was epic, both sailors were flawless with massive jumps and insane wave rides, and in the end it was Levi who yet again took the crown! Wrapping up the comp, I was stoked to come back and finish in 9th place against such talented and seasoned competitors, and look forward to the next AWT event in San Carlos!

After the Pistol event, I shot back to Hood in hopes of some better weather and wind to wrap up the month. Luckily, my prayers were answered, and we scored some great days out east as well as in the corridor. So far July has been off the richter, with warm weather and un-forecasted nuclear winds, it’s averaging 30 at the Hatch as I finish this up, so time to wrap up and roll out! Summer is here and so are we, come find my van or drop by Gorge Surf Shop to try one of our new Mutants, TR-8s, Legends, Locos, and Ghosts!

OUR ATTENTION HAS NOW TURNED TO THE RACE AND FREE-RACE SAILS

Maui Monthly no.86. June ’12.38

Page 39: Maui Monthly Newsletter no.86 June 2012

With the 2013 wave and freestyle sail lines completed, Our attention has now turned to the race and free-race sails. This year we have a great starting point with the current TR-8 race sails proving themselves as winners on the race course. In a way, this presents its own challenge as we are looking to improve something that is already working very well. This has never slowed us down before so we have been busy working through a variety of prototypes ranging from moderate refinements and material/construction modifications all the way to experimenting with significant geometry changes. Summer on Maui is a perfect time for race sail development as the waves subside and the trades are super consistent. The Local Maui race series also provides an excellent testing ground with an ever competitive fleet of local and international racers.

We are also devoting attention to the evolution of the Titan GS free-race sail line. Its development will somewhat parallel that of the race sails with the goal of improving range, speed and power.

Stay tuned for updates as more testing determines the evolutionary direction of our next batch of speed machines.

Aloha,Artur Szpunar

June meant steady, strong trades this year. Wind and more wind, racing, and more racing. With the PWA rules demanding finished designs by October, we now are using the early Spring months for race sail development and testing. This takes maximum advantage of the local racing venue and also catches Micah at home in between the early events. There is nothing like the one on one testing and near instant feedback into the design process. And getting on to the local course with other high skilled racers shows you whether you have the speed or not. There’s no lyin’ when everyone’s tryin’! We feel the TR-8 has hit some levels that demand we go slow and in tiny increments when changing much. The goal will be to reduce weight, push the acceleration potential, and further define stability without giving up any of the soft feel and easy jibing. There are now several prototypes in key sizes and work on-going on FW. When talking about the changes and effects, we have morning long rigging sessions to gather the data.

SUMMER FOR SOME... WINTER FOR OTHERS

Action in wave sailing is nil, at least around here, and we watch the freestyle contests with great interest. The telling thing for me is to watch the pump-to-plane time from all the sailors, and the top speed potential. In freestyle, the sailing attributes are getting vital to the contest result. The tricks are technical flying manuevers where wing function is everything. I’ve been interested to see the World Champion (current) take our very old design philosophy regarding the use of dacron luff panels and request that from his latest sponsor. If that is what makes a newer design lively and flighty, what does that say about the sails which don’t have that??? Hmmmm

Cornelia, the mother of mine, has me taking a good deal of time away from her namesake, Cornelia, the sailing boat. We did manage to get the dodger frame properly installed and tightened up to a rigid form, and to get a nice pattern made for the skin and windows. It’s possible it can be done by July 26 for her 97th birthday sail. She’d love the shade and shelter. We watched a shipwreck happen right in front of our slip. A nice little ketch washed up during a strong blow from an odd direction. I had stayed aboard that night because of the coming weather and when I got up at 5:30 A.M. it was foundering inside the reef. It was a Canadian vessel and the owner was not aboard. It’s always sad to see someone lose a boat, and I certainly know the feeling. Dream’s end. AlohaBarry Spanier

Slalom racing has begun on Maui and the wind continues to blow hard. So far I’ve competed in two Kanaha slalom series already in June and I had decent success both weeks, winning my age group and pro division the first week and then Micah showed up and took the honors, but was pleased to get second to him in the age group and pro division.

A BUSY JUNE

Having completed two triathlons also in June I was pleased with the way I raced on the board. The half Ironman on the big Island early June was a very windy race, with 30 knot winds blowing across the bike course and for the first time I could put my good sense of wind to use while I was running. Our local triathlon here on Maui took place the next week and was excited to set a new PR for the distance and third in my age group.

Lot of training with Micah has continued which is great for new motivation and ideas are now developing for the tr9 race sail which we will start developing this month.
