Term 2 Welcome back to another term at Dalby State High School. I am very much looking forward to the term ahead. It will be a busy one, but also successful I am sure. ANZAC Day Our school ANZAC Day ceremonies were held on Monday 29 April. Both our Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary services were respectfully conducted with a large number of students involved. I was especially proud of the behaviour of all students in attendance. Many staff and students also participated in both the Dawn Service and the Dalby March and Ceremony on Wednesday 25 April. NAPLAN Our year 7 & 9 students will complete their NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy & Numeracy) tests on May 14-16. NAPLAN provides the school with an opportunity to see areas where students excel and require support. For me, this is by far the most important part of the NAPLAN testing. This year (as we did last year) students will have access to a reward lunch event, which students can access when they have completed their tests on each day. Term 1 Attendance A summary of our term 1 attendance is below. Congratulations to the year 11 and 12s who have seen a massive improvement this year. I am incredibly disappointed to see the decline across years 8, 9 and 10. There are always valid and legitimate reasons for missing schools, but far too many students in these three year levels are deciding that attendance at school is not a priority. This is simply not okay! Until Next Edition Please do not hesitate to make an appointment with me at the school office, if I can be of assistance with any matter. Mission Australia Youth Survey

To collect school specific data for our Senior Health Education students, the school has registered for this year’s Mission Australia Youth Survey. All students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will be completing this anonymous survey in their PC lessons. Individual students will not be reported on – the data is collated externally by Mission Australia and a report is supplied to Dalby SHS later in the year to give us a snapshot of our students’ thoughts and feelings on growing up in Australia. This survey is supported by Education Queensland and information is used across a number of organisations. Most importantly, it is an invaluable resource for our Senior Health Education students. Instead of seeking permission from every student’s parent/guardian, if you DO NOT want your child to take part in the survey or you would like further information, please contact myself (Karen Marini) via email at [email protected].

Stud Sheep Show Team Last Wednesday students from the Stud Sheep Show Team participated in a workshop at the Bunya Campus. Mr Andrew Herron was our guest at this workshop who demonstrated to the students techniques used to prepare a lamb for a show. The students practised techniques in “carding and trimming” a fleece to make the lamb look its most presentable. This is all in preparation for the students’ taking our White Suffolk lambs to the Marburg show on the 11th May. This will be the first time we will be showing stud sheep so it will be a real learning experience for the students. At the workshop, students also learnt more about handling a sheep, halter training and more on judging an animal. Over the next two weeks, students will be practising their skills to get our stud ewe lambs ready for show as well as honing their skills at judging in preparation for the junior judging section at the show. Mr Herron was one of the original donors of our stud ewes and when he visited, he brought over one of his stud rams for us to use with our ewes. So come October we should have lots of lambs to grow and show next year. We wish the students luck at their first show at Marburg. I am sure they will have a great time.

ANZAC Day Commemorations On ANZAC Day this year there was a large contingent of Dalby State High School students and teachers marching in the parade. Many of our students proudly wore the medals of the past generations on their chests and spoke highly of those that they were representing. This respect never seems to wane and each year we see a greater number of young people joining in the commemorative services including Dawn Service. Our annual ANZAC Day Memorial service was held on Monday and the students showed great respect as we remembered those men and women who have represented Australian armed services and those that continue to represent us. Our junior and senior school leaders lead the ceremonies with grace and dignity befitting such a respected tradition. Thank you to the DSHS Concert band and Rachel Redlich, led by Rachel Summerville, for such an emotional rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Advance Australia Fair’ and the ‘Last Post’. It is evident from these two special events that our students will remember them. Lest we forget.

For all parents/guardians of Indigenous students We have a Facebook Page where we put up notices and information that is related to our students who are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. If you are a parent/guardian of an Indigenous student, please search ‘Dalby State High School Indigenous News’ and add yourself as a member. DSHS will be celebrating NAIDOC week on the first week of term 3 (15th – 19th July). Keep your eyes on the newsletter and the Facebook page for more information closer to the date. We have some exciting things planned! Indigenous Education Staff: My name is Alicia Edwards and part of my role here at DSHS is coordination and leadership of Indigenous Education. This includes line management of our Indigenous Support staff. We currently have 172 students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander enrolled at DSHS. These students have heaps of support that they can access at school. Jo Duncan- Community Education Councillor (CEC) Aunty Jo is a community and in-school liaison between students, teachers, administration staff and parents/community. She knows our Indigenous students and their families. She feeds our whole school through the coordination of breakfast and lunch club and is a general support of students who need that extra bit of help. Her email is [email protected]

Kira Dyke- Beyond the Broncos Girls Academy Kira works in our school as a Student Support Officer and is employed by the Broncos. Her job is to improve the attendance and completion rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls at DSHS. She helps girls in the program to broaden their career aspirations and appreciate the value of education. She provides in-class support, liaises with school staff and community members to deliver the Beyond the Broncos outcomes. She prepares and delivers workshops, assists individual students, provides health and well-being programs. She has exclusive access to Brisbane Broncos staff, players, facilities and events. Her email is [email protected]

Christian, Luke and Wayne - Clontarf These gentlemen work in our school to improve the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men. The programmes are delivered through a network of football academies established in partnership with local schools. Christian, Luke and Wayne mentor and counsel students on a range of behavioural and lifestyle issues. Academy activities are planned within the focus areas of education, leadership, employment, healthy lifestyles, life skills and football. In order to remain in the programme, participants must continue to work at school and embrace the objectives of the Foundation. Christian’s email is [email protected]

Sarah Dodd- Teacher Aide Sarah is employed to support our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in classes. Sarah works as a Teacher Aide and supports our students by assisting them and staff with learning activities. She also helps out with organisation and preparation for our Special Days celebrations. Sarah is about to go on maternity leave and we are in the process of recruiting another teacher aide. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you have any ideas for more ways that we can celebrate and teach Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture at DSHS, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 46690900 or [email protected]

Thanks, Alicia Edwards

Year 11 News Welcome back to Term 2 everyone. I hope that everyone had a restful break after what has been a busy start to the year. The vast majority of Year 11 students are facing the challenges of their final years of school with focus and determination which is always pleasing to see, especially considering the changes happening with the introduction of the new SATE/ATAR system. Interim Report Cards and Parent Teacher Interviews—The Interim Report Cards were emailed to families who have provided the school with a valid email address at the end of Term 1. If you do not have email or did not receive one, a printed copy can be provided by contacting the office. Parent-Teacher Interviews were held this week. If you were unable to attend but would like to speak to teachers, please contact the office. I strongly encourage all parents and caregivers to make contact with teacher of subjects that students did not pass based on the results on the Interim Reports. Regular and consistent contact with teachers can go a long way to minimise stress, provide well-informed and specific feedback about what your student needs to do to achieve a pass as well as offering strategies to assist with this. Year 11 Camp—I am very excited to be heading away with 87 keen and eager students on the Year 11 Camp in Week 3. By now, all students should have received an information sheet outlining the equipment they will need to bring on camp. Students also received some last minute instructions from me during their weekly Year Level Parade. A reminder to all students not attending camp – attendance at school is compulsory for the duration of camp as regular Year 11 classes will still be running. Anzac Day March—Thank you to the Year 11 Students who attended the annual Anzac Day March last week. In a world that is changing and moving at such a rapid pace, it is heart-warming to know that the efforts and sacrifice of the men and women from our past do not go unrecognised. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your student.

Year 8 News

Welcome to Term 2.

I sincerely hope all families had a restful and relaxing Easter break. I hope students took this opportunity to recharge their batteries so they can continue to focus on learning and creating a safe and respectful environment. I love to analyse data and I make no apology for this. Data can tell you a lot and it can identify areas for im-provement and allow us to celebrate successes.

TERM ONE DATA

Report cards have all been emailed and I am encouraging all families to have a discussion with their student to identify any areas of improvement. As a cohort the follow-ing breakdown may be of interest to parents.

Level of Achievement Summary 81% of achievement marks were a pass or better. 20.3% of marks were an A, 30.2% were a B and 30.5% were a C. 14.1% of marks were close to passing being a D.

Behaviour Summary 91.2% of behaviour marks were a pass or better. 49.7% of marks were an A, 23.8% were a B and 17.7% were a C. Unfortunately 8.8% of behav-iour marks were unsatisfactory.

Effort Summary 86.2% of effort marks were a pass or better. 41.5% of marks were an A, 27.9% were a B, 16.8% were a C. Unfortunately 13.7% of effort marks were unsatisfactory.

Overall the above data is promising. Students are off to a good, healthy start to their education outcome. We all have areas that we can improve on. During PC we will be analysing our own personal data and coming up with a term plan of how we can improve in our learning. It is often the little things such as being prepared for lessons, coming to school with a pencil case, books and food in a lunch box (or money for tuckshop) that can make a huge difference in the outcomes of students.

Attendance : Year 8 attendance data for term 1 is 86.9% “bottom on seat”. This is the actual attendance for students, not the explained absence rate. It gives me great pleasure in stating that 15 students attended EVERY SINGLE DAY of TERM ONE. Well done!! Students not attending the swimming carnival and the last day of term affected this percentage greatly. Friday also seems to be day that year 8 students don’t commit to attending school. I need your help on this front. This term we have the athletics carnival in week 10. I am strongly encouraging that all students attend this event as it awesome to relax, participate and dress in house colours. I also need for you on a Friday to strongly encourage with a lot of persuasion your student to attend school – especially if they do not have a valid reason to stay at home. I understand totally that family matters arise, illness occurs, but if your student ‘just can’t be bothered’ this is where you need to make them bothered and attend.

General: There are a few items that I need to draw your attention to. If your student is away please phone the absence line and explain why they are absent. You can also reply to the text message sent out each morning. Absences over 10 days require an exemption which needs to be applied for.

Break times have been altered going forward to two 30 minute breaks and one 15 minute break. There have also been some class changes that have come into effect to create a more positive learning environment for all students. From the feedback I have received these changes have had a positive impact already.

Lastly, I look forward to supporting your student to gain a successful outcome at Dalby State High School in year 8. It is often the habits and routines that are created now that facilitate a successful senior pathway. As always please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or questions. Thank you to the parents and carers who have made contact with me to date. I appreciate you trusting me to support your student. I thank you for your patience while I am getting to know all the year 8 stu-dents and I am excited for the successes we will have during term 2. I can be contacted on 4669 0900 or [email protected] Until next time.
