SA 05-01-A Construction Material Science 40 hours

    RATIONALE

Zambia being a developing country has a lot of construction activities going on. In order to

build economic and safe structures appropriate materials should be used. Therefore, testing of

    materials is essential.

As the construction industry grows there is a need to establish quality control of materials used

in construction. Though the importance of understanding of materials used in construction is

widely recognised, there is less emphasis in teaching of material construction at Material

Testing Assistant level. The quality of the test data is influenced by the skills of Material

    Testing Assistants.

It is against this background that this short course has been developed, in order to help the

nation build high quality durable structures at minimum life cost cycle.

This course will therefore, provide the construction industry with qualified Materials Testing

Assistants who will apply acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes in the process of ensuring

that materials used in construction comply with required standards and specifications. The

trained persons will be utilised in both the formal and informal sectors of the economy.

    PROGRAMME PURPOSE

The purpose of the programme is to equip trainees with knowledge, skills and attitudes in testing of

construction materials to enable them perform competently in both formal and informal section of the

economy. They will be able to carry out materials tests both in the laboratory and in the field to

    applicable standards.

    PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:

On completion of the programme, the trainee will be able to:

4.1 Carry out materials sampling and testing procedures both in the laboratory

    and in the field

4.2 Determine properties and quality of different types of construction materials

4.3 Maintain high standards of safety, health, environment while carrying out tests

in the laboratory and in the fields.

    4.4 Apply entrepreneurship skills

4.5 Use information and communication technology.

4.6 Communicate effectively both internally and externally.

    TEACHING STRATEGIES

Learning shall constitute Lectures, demonstrations, discussions, tutorials, simulations, study tours,

practical laboratory training and field work.

    .

Direct Entry: Minimum of a Grade 12 School Certificate with passes in English, Mathematics and

    Science or Physics and Chemistry

Mature entry: Grade 12 School Certificate with a pass in Science or Physics and Chemistry and a

minimum of five (5) years experience in a construction related field.

    STUDENT ASSESSMENT

Students shall be subjected to an end of the module test administered byNCC and a summative final course examination comprising all the modulesshall be administered by TEVETA. The breakdown for assessments shall be

    as follows:

    Continuous Assessment 40%

    Final Examination 60%

    Pass mark 50%

    ATTENDANCE

The candidate must have minimum of attendance 85% to be eligible for the final examinations.

    PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS

This is the first module Trainees will have to pass continuous assessment for them to sit for the final

examination. Construction Material Science, Material Sampling, Material Testing, Safety, Health and

Environment, Information and Communication Technology, Entrepreneurship.

Trainees will only be afforded three opportunities to pass the programme.

    CERTIFICATION

An attendance certificate Skills Award Certificate in Construction Materials Testing will be awarded by

    TEVETA to successful candidates.
