This Master Class will provide participants with a working knowledge of how to test and asset manage IEC 61850 based systems and solutions based on today’s technology, demonstrated with proven products. Demonstrations will be performed using a multi-Vendor simulated substation environment. Demonstrations will supplement course material to help participants learn how to safely, reliably and efficiently test and asset manage IEC 61850 based systems. The presenters will run various tests on a multi-Vendor substation environment to demonstrate the individual steps required. The simulated substation will consist of protection relays from different vendors communicating with a Substation SCADA HMI and Gateway over an Ethernet network. As the course is based on commonly used technology, it will be limited to IEC 61850 Edition 1 and 2 ‘Station Bus’ only. ‘Sampled Values’ and ‘Process Bus’ will be outside of the scope of this Master Class. The presenters, from opposite sides of the country, have independently led the creation and implementation of IEC 61850 substation systems. Furthermore, the presenters have had extensive experience with troubleshooting, fault finding, maintenance and augmentation of existing IEC 61850 based systems. TARGET AUDIENCE Supervisors, Engineers and Technical Officers that are involved in either the design, testing, commissioning, operations & maintenance or asset management of IEC 61850 based systems. Due to the course content, participants are expected to bring more than two years of substation protection, SCADA or control systems related experience.

MASTERCLASS IN OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE OF

IEC 61850 BASED SYSTEMS

COURSE OVERVIEW

Many IEC 61850 based systems have been built and are in service within Australia and around the world. These systems are found in power utilities as well as many other industries such as mining, oil and gas, infrastructure and renewable generation.

There is an opportunity to improve the efficiency and quality of operations and maintenance by improving the skills necessary to maintain and manage in-service IEC 61850 based systems. Furthermore, there is an opportunity for designers to consider and integrate maintenance and testing features into their new and existing designs.

TARGET AUDIENCESupervisors, Engineers and Technical Officers that are involved in either the design, testing, commissioning, operations & maintenance or asset management of IEC 61850 based systems. Due to the course content, participants are expected to bring more than two years of substation protection, SCADA or control systems related experience.

The objective of this course is for participants to learn:

• How to monitor and manage in-service systems to upkeep thereliability and safety of these systems.

• How to maximise value by leveraging the capability of vastlyenhanced data structures and data access capabilities ofIEC61850 based systems.

• How to improve the automation of operations andmaintenance of IEC 61850 based systems.

• How to safely, reliably and efficiently test, commission, placeinto service and maintain protection and automation systemsbased on IEC 61850, including how to:

o Validate the substation protection and automationsystem against stakeholder requirements.

o Verify that the substation protection and automationsystem meets the design intent.

• How to verify and validate time synchronisation schemes.• How IEC 61850 configuration files are managed using the

Substation Configuration Language (SCL) and howconfiguration management and version control impactsverification and validation.

• How to test and manage protection class IEC 61850 GOOSEsignals and MMS information flows.
