19th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 9, 2020

Dear Sisters and Brothers, In last week's gospel we find Jesus taking the disciples off to a quiet place to pray and in this week's gospel, Jesus goes off by himself to pray. In last week's gospel the possible takeaway message is the miracle of feeding the thousands and the takeaway message this week is possibly the calming of the waters and challenging of Peter’s faith. In all of this we run the danger of missing why Jesus felt it necessary to take his disciples to a quiet place to pray and later why it was important for him to go by himself and pray – he was grieving the death of his cousin, John the Baptist. No doubt the disciples were petrified with what happened to John the Baptist and wondered would the same fate visit them? For Jesus it was a question of what next? What was his mission? What does the Father want from him? For Jesus, the gathering of the people of God was the sign he needed – his mission is to God’s people, to reassure them, affirm them in their relationship with God and to bring healing, physical healing but more importantly, spiritual healing. In our readings this weekend we find a church in hiding in our first reading, and in our gospel, sailing on very stormy waters. Elijah was hiding because he feared for his life. Months earlier he challenged the false prophets of the King’s wife, Jezebel, to a ‘faith duel.’ He won and the people could clearly see that Elijah was the true prophet of the true God and the others were false prophets of false gods. But that wasn’t enough, Elijah decided to take it a step further, he had them taken out and killed. When Jezebel found out about this, she was none too happy and wanted to have Elijah killed. Elijah ran for his life and hid on Mount Sinai. Elijah wanted to die; he was deeply depressed, alone, hunted, hiding in a cave, clinging to his faith in God by his fingernails. Elijah experiences an amazing encounter with God; God speaks to Elijah and tells him to go outside as God is going to pass by and Elijah will experience the presence of God. The experience was enough for Elijah to leave the mountain and to resume his calling to be God’s prophet. The story in the today's gospel has several meanings or points to make to us. The first is the literal meaning for the disciples – I can hear some of the disciples saying, (or maybe it’s me talking as if I were there) ‘what on earth are we doing here? What were we thinking, going on a boat journey at night and not knowing where we are going and now, we face this storm where we could all drown? The theological view of this passage is the storm is the world and the boat on the stormy waters is the church and the disciples are us. We can either look at it literally or theologically, but Jesus comes to both. Jesus comforts the disciples, reassures them and strengthens their faith and with a stronger faith the waters begin to settle. Peter, in a way, challenges Jesus, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus said, “Come.” Well we all know it worked for a while and then Peter lost faith – but Jesus reached out and caught his hand and helped him back into the boat (the church). Friends, sometimes we can be over zealous in our faith, like Elijah, and can possibly cause more harm than good or we can lose faith because the waters are very stormy, like the disciples and particularly Peter, but in all of this, God will always be there to strengthen, to encourage, to reassure and lead us down from the mountain and back into the boat. I would like to give Denis McBride C.Ss.R the last word on this from his book, Seasons of the Word: “Neither Elijah nor Peter had the faith to match their zeal, but God supported both in their dangerous tasks. That promise is extended to all who put their faith in God and in God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Often when we feel that we are battling against the odds, we wonder why Jesus always seems to be off somewhere else. And even though we know that we won’t be asked to walk on water, we get that sinking feeling all the same. In that plight we are not thrown back on our own resources. In this community gathered in faith, we have the word of God and the bread of life and the support of each other. That has to be enough to keep us afloat.” Have a great week

Fr. Ma in

Catholic Charities News The Covid 19 pandemic has stressed Catholic Charities’ domestic violence and substance abuse counseling programs and greatly

increased the demand for assistance to meet basic needs. At the same time, this year, we had to cancel all live fundraising activities. Therefore, to help meet our financial challenge, we have scheduled a virtual gala.

Virtual Guardian Angel Benefit of Hope Event

You are invited to the Catholic Charities inaugural Guardian Angel Benefit of Hope virtual event on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. This fun and entertaining virtual fund raiser, hosted by comedian Joe Piscopo, will feature entertain-ment, a silent auction, basket raffles, giveaways and a Super 50/50 raffle. Catholic Charities Diocese of Trenton, inspired by our Catholic faith, provides trauma–focused specialized counseling, addiction treatment, domestic violence services and help meet-ing basic needs for over 100,000 people each year, regardless of their religion. The celebration is an opportunity to hear stories of the transforming impact Catholic Charities makes on our community. There is no charge to attend the event but, we ask that you register at www.catholiccharitiestrenton.org/GABOH2020. Hope you can tune in.

Thank you for your support.

2020-2021 REGISTRATION - WE WILL BEGIN OCTOBER 4, 2020 ONLINE WITH A DIGITAL PLATFORM AND RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM IN JANUARY 2021. As we look forward to the fall we are conscious of what is happening in the world around us. Based on concerns for the health and safety of our families and the physical distancing guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and the Diocese of Trenton, we have decided to begin with an online program with hopes of returning to the classroom in January 2021. We will be conducting short instructional videos weekly on the lesson your child will be learning that week. We ask that you commit to your regular RE schedule to do your lessons by forming a good habit. IE: Sunday Weekly, Tuesday Weekly or Monday Monthly. We will begin to contact families by email about registering for 2020-2021 with Registration Form pickup times. VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS NEEDED IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION! Please consider volunteering. We have a wonderful program for Catechists, Aides and Hall Monitors. The success of our program is dependent on the willingness of individuals to help out. All volunteers need to be fingerprinted and attend a “VIRTUS” Safe Child workshop before being allowed to volunteer. (Fingerprinting and VIRTUS information can be found on our RE website.) Volunteering is a rewarding experience to share your faith with our parish youth. High School and College age volunteers will excel this year since we will be going digital – this is right up their alley.

SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN) (1891-1942) “Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops’ condemna on of their genocide, took into custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-prac cing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one si ng, then declared, “That is the Truth!” Bap zed on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ ini a on into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus’ Presenta-

on in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecu on of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Today’s gospel is less about Jesus manifes ng power in great events than it is an invita on to respond to Jesus, to come to him. We follow Jesus not because he is a great miracle worker

but because he is the “Son of God.” It is far easier to come to Jesus in the obvious things; for example, faithful a endance at Mass. It is far more difficult to see God in the li le things; for example, being pleasant when the poor are demanding, or giving back to a cashier too much change, or giving extra me to be present to children or spouse. DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION - DRIVE-TO INSTRUCTIONS • As a family, please watch the livestream Mass together in your home

• After Mass ends get in your car and come to the Church to receive Holy Communion (those receiving need to be at their own car window and not able to exit the car)

• There will be a Holy Communion station at each Church

• Before receiving Holy Communion pray the ‘Prayer Before Receiving Communion’ in the car together

• After receiving Holy Communion pray the ‘Prayer After Receiving Communion’ together in the car. (Prayers found on previous page.)

Holy Communion will be distributed 15 minutes after Mass has completed, thus giving you time to drive over to the respective Church. First and foremost I ask for your patience in all this - this is not like a concert where there are a limited number of tickets and one feels the need to sleep out all night to be in line with a chance of getting a ticket. There will be Holy Communion for all who want to receive and for whatever length of time it takes. Receiving Holy Communion at St Mary Church, Bordentown • Enter our parking lot off of Crosswicks Street nearest the Church, coming in the direction from
