16th Sunday in Ordinary Time July19, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The theme of our readings today is God’s readiness to forgive. The writer of the book of Wisdom states, “There is no god besides you who have the care of all, that you need show you have not unjustly condemned. For your might is the source of jus ce; your mastery over all things makes you lenient to all … And you taught your people, by these deeds that those who are just must be kind; and you gave your children good ground for hope that you would permit repentance for their sins.”

In the passage from the Book of Wisdom, the writer shows us how kind and compassionate our God is. Even though our God is all might our God judges with clemency and with leniency. Then the writer tells us because God taught us by these deeds, that those who are just must be kind.

In our gospel reading from Ma hew, Jesus tells the crowd a parable about a farmer sowing good seed and someone coming in the middle of the night and sows weeds among the wheat. The servants are amazed to see the weeds growing among the wheat because they knew the farmer sowed only good seed, so where did the weeds come from? They offered to pull up the weeds, but the farmer said no because they run the risk of pulling up the wheat too. For many of us we find it hard to understand that if God is all good how is there evil in our world? Did God not make all things and all God made is good? So, why is there evil? In the parable Jesus tries to answer this ques on. God spreads the good seed of love, care, compassion and understanding but because of our gi of freewill, there is always someone who wants to sow seeds of bi erness, resentment and jealously to pit people against each other causing good people to do bad things. The weeds are seen as bad ac oned people who choose to do bad things all the me – when good people make the mistake of doing something bad they can be cast as weeds and be discarded with no hope of forgiveness or redemp on. For God and for Jesus forgiveness and redemp on is always part of God’s plan – not just between God and us but also between each other. Jesus has asked us to “love one another as I have loved you and to forgive one another as the heavenly Father has forgiven you.” As a reflec on let us take the last verse of our psalm:

“You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity. Turn toward me and have pity on me; give your strength to your servant.”

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers that have been helping at our Masses - those who have been ushering in the church and cleansing a er all our public Masses and the Knights of Columbus for helping in the church and in the parking lot. If you would like to help a er Mass in either St. Mary Church or Holy Assump on, please contact the office and we will contact you to see what me suits you best. I no ced HA only had two people cleansing the seats a er Mass on Sunday – that may have been a one off but I’m conscious that it can be the same people all the me – if we share the load it makes it easier for everyone. Have a great week.

As Vincent de Paul said, “We ought to have confidence in God that he will look after us since we know for certain that as long as we are grounded in that sort of love and trust we will be always under the

protection of God in heaven, we will remain unaffected by evil and never lack what we need even when everything we possess seems headed for disaster.”

Listening to today’s Gospel, we can trust that God knows our love and good deeds, and that he will mercifully gather us into his kingdom.

This week, please say a special prayer each day for the poor and forgotten in our parish.

…… Religious Education News …… LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES CAN BE FOUND

UNDER THE RE CURRENT EVENTS TAB ON OUR WEBSITE 1st – 4th Grade – What does it mean to put God first, and how can we communicate the goal of keeping Jesus at the center of our lives to young children? This sunflower activity will talk about ways the children do keep Jesus first.

Sunflower Activity 5th - 8th Grade – Mercy is the caring for the needs of people's minds, hearts, and lives. It means to share in God's forgiveness and love. What a perfect virtue to study as families! This activity will challenge you to find, read, and cite passages from your bible related to the virtue of mercy.

VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS NEEDED IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION! Please consider volunteering. We have a wonderful program for Catechists, Aides and Hall Monitors. The success of our program is dependent on the willingness of individuals to help out. All volunteers need to be fingerprinted and attend a “VIRTUS” Safe Child workshop before being allowed to volunteer. (Fingerprinting and VIRTUS information can be found on our RE website.) Volunteering is a rewarding experience to share your faith with our parish youth. High School and College age volunteers will excel this year since we will be going digital – this is right up their alley. 2020-2021 REGISTRATION As we look forward to the Fall we must be conscious of what is happening in the world around us. Based on concerns for the health and safety of our families and the physical distancing guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and the Diocese of Trenton, I continue to monitor and watch for guidance. While these adjustments continue to change, I cannot at this time comment on registration or in-class learning. Please remember that all changes will be made to protect our students and volunteers against the spread of COVID-19. What I can promise is a superior Catholic education during these unprecedented times. I hope to hold Re-Registration in July, continue to monitor your email and the above noted communications. Always remember we are one CATHOLIC family. We will get through this, as with all the challenges before us, together. Live our Creed.

The Fall will bring many favorable changes to the curriculum. 1st-6th grade will now be using Christ in Us by Sadlier. This new program comes with detailed class plans and a digital portal for Catechist, parent and child. Faithful, comprehensive, structured, and effective catechesis is delivered through a variety of instructional models, supported by digital portals for all users, providing the ability to adapt to the real-time needs of their learners and their learning environments. 7th grade will now be adding in a minimal amount of Decision Point, currently used solely by our 8th grade classes. Class time will also be reduced to aid in the amount of time children are dropped off for class and picked up after Mass. All the specifics will be included in the Registration Packet, estimated for mid-July. Class to Mass will continue but all the grades will be required to attend Mass after class putting the focus on Mass.

The Lord, the gracious, the merciful, has made a memorial of his wonders; he gives food to those who fear him. [Psalm 111(110):4-5]

PRAYER TO ST. MARY MAGDALENE

Mary, called Magdalene,

Great Tower of Faith, Beloved of Christ: We humbly come before you in search of your intercession.

We ask for your eyes that we may see, Your ears that we may hear, Your wisdom that we may know,

Your heart that we may love, Your feet that we may walk the pathways of truth,

Your hands that we may serve. Grant us this request - that we, like you, may become fully

self-actualized, Realizing the fulfillment of our Soul’s purpose in this life: To know love. To be love.

To serve on behalf of love; And if it be ordained as such, That we serve this love, as you did,

In the company of our Beloved. We ask this in your name

And in the name of your own Beloved, Jesus, the Christ.

Amen.

SAINT SHARBEL MAKHLŪF (1828-1898) July 24

The convenience store owner cha ed animatedly in Arabic with coworkers, but hardly at all with his American clientele. So soon a er 9/11, he probably figured, with my accent, the less said, the be er. That changed when an American customer recognized Saint Sharbel’s portrait on the wall: “So you’re Lebanese Maronites!” The owner was happily incredulous: “You know our saint?” “Not at first,” the customer admi ed. “But we help the Catholic Near East Welfare Associa on, and their mag-azine published that picture and called Sharbel the ‘Paradoxical Ar san of Peace.’ ” “Everyone thinks we’re Muslims,” said the owner, “and some of my workers are. Saint Sharbel helps us live together in peace!” A hermit for twenty-three years, li le is known of Sharbel’s life. He died a er suffering a stroke while celebra ng the liturgy. Miracles a ributed to his intercession number in the thousands, and in war-torn Lebanon, Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims pray together where his incorrupt body is entombed. How lovely if a er our passing, we too could be remem-bered for having brought very different people to the one God, together in peace. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Ignatius teaches us well how to hear the voice of God and discern the Spirits. We will review his Rules for Discernment and use Why Did God Make Me? Finding Your Life’s Purpose, Discernment in an Evolutionary World by Louis Savory. Donation: $175, includes book. HONORING YOUR CONTEMPLATIVE SOUL - THE BEST OF THOMAS KEATING (9 Thursdays, 9:30-11:30 AM) September 17 October 22 November 19 December 17 January 14 February 11 March 18 April 15 May 13 During this 2-hour session each month, we will study the teachings of Trappist Fr. Thomas Keating as he presents contemplation as Divine Therapy for the healing of our souls. We will conclude each session with 20 minutes of contemplative prayer. This program is particularly for those who desire to deepen their practice of contemplative prayer, or centering prayer as we sometimes call it. Donation: $175, includes book. STUDY OF ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS - (9 Thursdays, 1:00-3:00 PM) September 17 October 22 November 19 December 17 January 14 February 11 March 18 April 15 May 13 John is all about God and God’s insatiable desire and pursuit of us. He is about love and union with God, not asceticism or annihila-tion as popularly believed. We continue our study of St. John this year by focusing on John’s The Dark Night. We end with 20 minutes of Centering Prayer. Donation: $175 includes book. To register, call 609-877-0509. Please check www.FHOP.org for our other offerings!
