NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla.,won his 34th ProfessionalBowlers Tour title and seventhcareer major in the 68th LumberLiquidators U.S. Open atBrunswick Zone-Carolier Sundaywith a stunning 225-216 victoryover Mika Koivuniemi of Hartland,Mich., when Koivuniemi missed a10 pin spare in the 10th frame.

Duke, the tournaments topqualifier, closed his game withfour consecutive strikes, to forceKoivuniemi to mark in the 10th,but the Finnish native, one of thebest spare-shooters in profes-sional bowling, uncharacteristi-cally missed the single-pin spareattempt.

With his victory, Duke earned$80,000 and moved into a tie forfourth place on the Lumber Liquidators PBATours list of all-time title-winners with fellow PBAHall of Famer Mark Roth.

Youd like to say to yourself I just won the U.S.Open, and maybe Ill grow into that, but right thisminute, I feel like Mika lost the U.S. Open, Dukesaid. But Im sitting here, holding the trophy. Ihad conceded the match. I knew the last fourstrikes were important, because you never knowwhatll happen. But missing the 10 pin is like hav-ing your ace pitcher on the mound and he throwsfour straight balls, and you lose.

Duke knew exactly how Koivuniemi felt on hisspare attempt because in 2008, when Duke wonhis first U.S. Open title to complete the PBA TripleCrown and Grand Slam, he had to convert the 2-4-5-8 bucket in the 10th frame to win.

I couldnt feel my legs on the approach on thatshot, Duke said. Thats what happens underpressure. Thats why guys miss three-foot putts. And its fatigue. Im exhausted. If I had to make a10 pin to win, it would be suspect at best.

Its not like I didnt deserve to win, Dukeadded. I was the top qualifier. I did throw fourstrikes in a row, after leaving a solid 8 pin in theeighth frame. I did what I needed to do

Koivuniemi, the No. 3 qualifier for the U.S. Openstepladder finals, eliminated Ryan Shafer ofHorseheads, N.Y., 236-222, in Sundays first

match. The key shot in that match was a pocket7-10 split by Shafer in the eighth frame, followinga double that ended his hopes for his first majortitle in a record 12 appearances in major champi-onship television finals.

Koivuniemi, the only player in PBA history toreach the television finals in all four PBA majorchampionships in a single year, eliminatedTommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., in the semi-final match, 241-158. Jones left splits and failedto convert in the fourth, sixth and eighth frames.

Duke is one of the greatest players ever. I knewit was going to be a tough match, Koivuniemisaid. I took the biggest shot of my life in the 10thframe and left the 10 pin, but unfortunately I did-nt make my spare. It was my nerves, I guess. Iwas thinking about the wrong things. This is thefirst time in my life Ive lost a title like that.

I sat there stunned, shocked, Duke said. Icant remember ever winning a PBA title sitting onthe bench. I knew I had just won the U.S. Open, but at that moment, my only thought was Mikahad lost. I was just like a fan watching in the liv-ing room. How could you not feel badly for him?

Mika will be fine, hell bounce back. Hes goingto be our Player of the Year, Duke said. But hellnever forget that one.

Over the past five years, PBA Tour players havea 95.9% success rate in converting the 10 pin on710 attempts on national television.

with undoubtedly the best story in TAT history!According to the opinions of 2 specialists, Belmont

shouldnt have lived longer than a year after his 1997

One week later, he collapsed in the Showboat Pro Shop.

His friend was a physician at John Hopkins and offeredto see him so he made the trip to Maryland. It was this

in a South Florida hospital. Bob had brought clothes for a

2-week stay and ended up with 52 weeks of post-op care

and radiation before he could come home to Las Vegas.
