    2 SPORTS REPORTER March 17 - 23, 2010

    Idle bowling thoughts.

    ...Bowling has been a good

friend and fund raiser for all

    charities, and hardly a week

    goes by when tournament,

    league and open play bowlers

aren't asked to help out with a

    donation, participation in a

tournament, or paying a fee to

attend a night of bowling headed

by a celebrity with a favorite

    cause. That's fine, but bowling

    and bowlers never receive the

    full credit so richly deserved.

    ...You-mostly-hear about the

    high scores in tournaments, but

even in the top pro events, there

is always a game or two in the

low 100s or lower. I remember

one night in the famed Paramus

(N.J.) Classic League, one of the

best in the nation, one of the best

    bowlers in history, PBA and

    USBC Hall of Famer Teata

Semiz rolled such a game. Itmade a great column for me,

and Semiz still laughs about it---

    now, not then.

    ...Kay Grayson, one of

    Hollywood's top performers,

and a great singer, died recently

at 88. The connection to bowling

is that she was married at one

    time to the late Johnny

Johnston, also a movie star and

    entertainer. When Johnston

moved to New York he bowled at

least twice a week in the best

leagues, loved to hang out in

    bowling centers, hosted bowling

events and did a fine job as the

announcer of the nationally tele-vised "Make That Spare" show.

All the greats of the 1950s were

featured on the telecast and a

number made big bucks by con-

verting the bonus spare at the

    end of each show.

...It is amazing when you read

    of bowling's longevity records,

    bowlers who have rolled in

    leagues or tournaments for more

than 70 years. The most difficult

part is getting past the first hur-

dle, just to live long enough.

    ...Pro bowlers are the most

cooperative of all athletes when itcomes to appearances, interviews

and the like. But I wonder if talk-

ing to them on TV while they are

in a match is a bit too much.

    ...One of the many records

posted by pro Hall of Famer

Anne Marie Duggan is a 262

average for an eight game block

    in a tournament. The over-

    whelming majority of female

bowlers in the world never have

rolled a single game of 262 or

    better in their entire careers.

    ...Houses are built of wood,

    stone, logs and gingerbread.

Now, an inventive bowler is talk-

ing about building a cabin out ofbowling balls. Don't be sur-

    prised if he succeeds, bowlers,

are doers of strange things, on

    and off the lanes.

    ...Kelly Kulick has been

receiving all kinds of praise and

special attention for her feat of

    winning the PBA Tournament of

    Champions, the first woman to

    to dent the former all-male

    domain. Let's hope that she

    receives some recognition when

the pick of the athletes of the

    year for 2010 are announced.

...It is said that all bad scoring

days in bowling will even out,

that the bad days will happily bematched by an equal amount of

good days. Most bowlers I know

have an awful lot of good days

    coming.

    ...Older bowlers don't exagger-

    ate. They just remember big.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. The last

    thing Kelly Kulick could have

imagined as she rolled her way to

    victory in the Professional

    Bowlers Association Tournament

of Champions in January was that

her historic victory would lead to a

    visit to the White House.

    And beyond simply acknowledg-

ing her as the first woman to win a

    PBA Tour

    title, Kulick

    found herself being hon-

    ored as an

    A m e r i c a n

    pioneer who

    had carved

    out a unique

    place in the

    nations histo-

    ry as the first

    woman to win

    a major

    championship

    in a male-

    d o m i n a t e d

    professional

    sport.

Kulick was invited to attend theInternational Womens Day recep-

tion held in the East Room of the

White House on Monday in cele-

    bration of Womens History

    Month. Hosted by President

    Obama and first lady Michelle

    Obama, approximately 250

    women attended the event which

    honored contributions of women in

    history and contemporary society.

    The event began approximately

    5 p.m. Eastern with a speech by

    Mrs. Obama who recognized all

    those in attendance.

Today all of you are joining the

long list of incredible women who

have graced these halls both as vis-

itors and as residents, from admi-

rals and actresses to civil rights

    pioneers, Mrs. Obama told the

group. Were here today not just

to pay tribute to leaders and icons

    and household names We honor

women who refused to listen to

those who would say that you

    couldnt or shouldnt pursue your

    dreams.

    P r e s i d e n t

    Obama thenspoke of the

    roles of

    women in

    b u i l d i n g

    America.

    Kulick said

    after the

    speeches by

    President and

    Mrs. Obama,

    there was a

    short recep-

    tion where she

    did get to meet

    very briefly

    with President

Obama.I didnt have a chance to speak

at length with the president or first

lady, but I did get to meet the pres-

ident and shake his hand, which

    was certainly a great honor.

Kulick said it was a simple and

    moving ceremony.

    The presidents speech was very

moving and paid tribute to the

    accomplishments of women who

have been pioneers in all walks of

life and as role models we are set-

ting the example for the genera-

tions that will follow us, Kulick

high 591 set. The 12-year-old lifted her overall average five points in

leading the A Team to a 5-2 triumph over powerhouse S.A.S. which

needed a closing 242 by talented 17-year-old Nick Gavron to salvage the

high-scoring, tightly contested finale, 463-449; the combined 912 gross
