Dear Parishioners,
Lent is upon us! This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. Our Church
begins its solemn preparation for the upcoming Feasts of Holy Week
and Easter. This is a time to reflect on the salvation that Jesus won
for us with his sacrifice on the Cross, his Death and Resurrection.
The next forty days are a time of intensified prayer, penance and
almsgiving. How does the Church ask us to live this time? The forty
days are an imitation of Jesus' fast in the desert before His public
ministry.
The importance of Lent is not the focus “on the outside,” but “on the
inside.” It is not a time only for external practices but for internal
change of heart. Jesus' call to conversion and penance does not aim
first at outward works, "sackcloth and ashes," fasting and mortifica-
tion, but at the conversion of the heart, interior conversion. Without
this, such penances remain sterile and false; however, interior con-
version urges expression in visible signs, gestures and works of pen-
ance.
Interior repentance is a radical reorientation of our whole life, a re-
turn, a conversion to God with all our heart, an end of sin, a turning
away from evil, with repugnance toward the evil actions we have
committed. At the same time it entails the desire and resolution to
change one's life, with hope in God's mercy and trust in the help of
his grace. This conversion of heart is accompanied by a salutary pain
and sadness which the Fathers called animi cruciatus (affliction of
spirit) and compunctio cordis (repentance of heart).
Through intensified prayer, penance and almsgiving during Lent we
prepare our hearts to celebrate the most Holy Mysteries of our salva-
tion.
A most blessed Lent to all of you!

Beloved Sons - In like a lion…out like a lamb. Can you think of
a better way to roar into Lent than by joining other men, just
like you, at the next Beloved Sons gathering? We meet this
Thursday March 7 (7:30-8:30 PM) at the parish center. As we
do twice a month (every first Thursday/third Saturday) we get
together to break open the gospel story for that upcoming week-
end. That night we will be sharing the gospel for the 1st Sunday
of Lent (Luke 4:1-13). We’ll be walking along with Jesus in the
desert. Don’t forget your sandals.
Communion Breakfast - A big thanks to parishioner Chad
Betz, whose witness talk at last week’s annual communion
breakfast captivated over 120 men. Chad’s journey update, as he
described his own Catholic roots along with the peaks and val-
leys along the way, demonstrated that all of us, if we have the
right map and companions, can indeed “Find the Way Home”.
Opportunities abound at St. James to share fellowship and the
good news…last Sunday was just one of them.
Save The Date - Men’s ½ day Lent Retreat - Deacons John
and Joe will be leading a ½ day “Lenten Reflection” on Satur-
day, March 23. We encourage you to circle that date on your
calendar as men will join together for 8:00 mass and then a
morning gathering reflecting on each of our own Lenten jour-
neys.
Our next meeting will be Thursday March 7@ 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The meetings are comprised of prayer, reflection, conver-sation and prayer shawls. We welcome you to join us
to knit/crochet and bond in prayer, friendship and compassion to help others. The blessed shawls are available to anyone seek-ing God's embracing love during times of sickness, healing and transition. They are available at no cost through the Parish Cen-ter. Any inquires, contact Mary Perille @ 203-377-1265. Dona-tions of yarn always gratefully accepted.
