InMarch,theKnightsofColumbuswillcelebrateFounder’sDay,markingthe125thanniversaryofthereceptionofitscharterfromthestateofConnecticut.KnightsofColumbuscouncilsthroughouttheworldwillbejoininginthiscommemorationof125yearsofservice,faith,andfraternity.CouncilsthroughouttheOrderareurgedtoobservethisday–amongtheirownmembersandwiththecommunityatlarge–asareminderofwhattheKnightsofColumbushasaccomplishedinthepastyears,theidealsoftheOrder,andtheirownlocalachievements.Council5480’sobservancewillbeintheLoungeonMarch15that6:30pm.

VenerableBrothers,“freewill"isthepersonalabilitytomakeaninformedanduninformedchoiceinlife.Itiseveryperson’snaturalbirthrightto

makehisorherowndecisionsandchoosehisorherownpath,goodorbad.IntheopinionofTracyKolenchuk,freewillcomesfromlifethatgives

onepowertoactintheenvironment.Freewillassumesthe'willtoact,'anditalsorequiresconsciousness.Forinstance,anamoebacanmake

deliberatemovementstowardsfoodorawayfromdangerwithout'mental'consciousness.Ithasanawarenessofitsenvironment,andabilityto

makemovementdecisionsbasedonthatawareness.Again,freewillistheunlimitedallowanceofwhateveranyindividualwantstodo—whether

goodorbad—includingrape,schoolshootings,adultery,massmurder,andmore.AccordingtoBaruchSpinoza,ifrightandwrongdonot

exist,thenfreedomhasnomeaning,exceptasasynonymforfreewill—doingwhateverapersonwants.Ifapersonfeelsthatitisrighttocapture

someoneandassaultshimorher,itisrightforhimorher.Ifapersonfeelsthatitiswrongtofeedastarvingchild,thenitiswrongforhimorher.IfI

feellikeit’srightformetodumpapotofboilingwateroveryourhead,thenitisright.Ifrightandwrongtrulydonotexist,thenassuredlyIdidthe

rightthing!Sincefreewillisassociatedwithfreedom,itisgoodtode,inefreedom.

Freedomcomesfromcommunity,becausecommunitiescreateandenforcelimitsoncommunitymembers,andontheirfreedomtoactbyrulesor

laws.Rulesorlawsaregenerallynegative,placinglimitsonfreedom.Humansgrowupinfamilies,withparentsthatrestrictfreedomswithinthe

family,andhierarchiesthatrestrictfreedomswithinvillagesortownsornations.Thesecommunitiesbene,itfromcommunityrestrictionson

freedomsaswellasindividualsinthecommunities.Forexample,acommunitymakesalawthatanyonewhoassaultsorkillssomeonewillbe

punishedseverely;itputsfearinpeopletobehavewell.Thesanctionsocietyappliesbringssanityintothecommunity.Societyitselfencourages

moraluprightnessonthemembersofthecommunitythroughchecksandbalancesofitsmembers.Thisleadsustothenextlevel—whatmakesan

actionrightbasedonmoralconscience.

AccordingtoCatechismoftheCatholicChurch(CCC)number1796,conscienceisajudgmentofreasonbywhichthehumanpersonrecognizesthe

moralqualityofaconcreteact.Intheopinionofthechurch;“Deepwithinhisconsciencemandiscoversalawwhichhehasnotlaiduponhimselfbut

whichhemustobey.Itsvoice,evercallinghimtoloveandtodowhatisgoodandtoavoidevil,soundsinhisheartattherightmoment…his

conscienceisman’smostsecretcoreandhissanctuary.ThereheisalonewithGodwhosevoiceechoesinhisdepth”(CCC.1776).Herethechurch

teachesusthatmanhastherighttoactinconscienceandinfreedomsoaspersonallytomakemoraldecisions.Hemustnotbeforcedtoactcontrary

tohisconscience.Normusthebepreventedfromactingaccordingtohisconscience,especiallyinreligiousmatters(DignitatisHumanae3#2).The

factisthatawell-formedconscienceisuprightandtruthful.Itformulatesitsjudgmentsaccordingtoreason,inconformitywiththetruegoodwilled

bywisdomoftheCreator.

Now,thequestionishowdoesapersonuseshisfreewilltoactinconscienceandinfreedomtoattainperfection?TheBookofGenesistellsusthat

GodcreatedmaninHisownimageandlikeness.WecaninferfromcreationaccountthatGodendowsmanwithfreewill,withfreedomand

consciencetoactinconformitytothewillofGod,whichhasbeenaninnervoiceurgingmantodogoodandtoavoidevil.ButmandisobeyedGodand

atetheforbiddenfruitandtheyrealizedthattheywerenaked(Gen.3:7).GodwantsAdamandEvetousetheirfreewilltoact

inconscienceandinfreedom,buttheydistrustedGod’sgoodnessandabusedthefreedomGodhadgiventhem.

Council5480was,atonetime,oneofthebest1stDegreeteamsintheStateandcertainlythebestonthePeninsula.TimeandagehavetakenatollontheTeam.WecanregainourpositionasthebestwithalittlebitofeffortfromsomenewBrotherKnights.Allteammembersjoinedwithtrepidationonthetaskbeforethem.Monologuestobememorized,movementstobelearned—whohastimeforallthat?Well,thewisemensaytoeatanelephant,itisbesttodoitabiteatatime.Comejointheteam,takebabysteps,learnafewofthesimplerpositionswiththegoalofmovingintoaprimaryposition.SeetheGrandKnight,DavidKerstetterortheDeputyGrandKnightRickSchirmtobeginthisimportantjourney.

TheKnightsofColumbusiscelebratingthe1,000thUltrasoundMachineplacedinpro-lifepregnancycenters.AsreportedinthemostrecenteditionoftheColumbiamagazinebytheSupremeKnight,CarlAndersonandattheMarchforLifeRally,theSupremeKnightspokeabouttheinitiativethatbeganin2009calledtheUltrasoundInitiative.Hereportedthattheprogramhashelpedsavehundredofthousandsoflivesandforeseesatimewhenover1millionunbornchildrenwillbesaved.
