    At North Arlington Bowl

    LAS VEGAS Four-time

    Professional Bowlers

Association title winner RyanShafer of Horseheads, N.Y.,

    earned another chance to win

his first major title on Jan. 15

after advancing to the finals of

    the PBA World Championship

    in the Billy Hardwick Division

    finals that aired on ESPN.

Shafer, who has made a PBA-

    record 12 championship round

    appearances in major tourna-

    ments without a title, defeated

    Andres Gomez of Colombia,

191-177, to win the second of

    four PBA World Championship

    elimination rounds at South

    Point Hotel Exhibition Hall.

The divisional finals consist ofthree one-game rounds, starting

    with four players, and eliminat-

ing the lowest-scoring player after each game.

Shafer will join Finlands Osku Palermaa, winner

of the Don Carter Division, and the winners of the

Johnny Petraglia and Mike Aulby Division finals in

the World Championship finals on ESPN on Sunday,

Jan. 15, at 1 p.m. ET. The PBA World Championship

offers a $50,000 first prize and the first major title of

    the 2011-12 PBA Tour season.

Shafer, who is celebrating his 25th season as a PBA

Tour competitor, established command in the opening

game, recovering from a missed split conversion in

the second frame to reel off nine consecutive strikes

for a 267 game. Venezuelas Ildemaro Ruiz, making

his PBA television debut, was second with a 258 fol-

lowed by Gomez with a 222. The groups top qualifi-er, 2009 PBA World Champion Tom Smallwood of

Saginaw, Mich., was eliminated with a 194 game

after failing to convert 4-7-9 and 4-9 splits in the

    sixth and eighth frames, respectively.

Gomez led the group in game two, starting with

five strikes on his way to a 219. Shafer was next with

a 207 and Ruiz was eliminated after posting a 180.

Shafer jumped out to a 29-pin lead after four frames

in the final game, but failed to convert the 3-6-10 in

the fifth frame and the 3-6-7-10 split in the ninth.

While Gomez had his own problems as the lane con-

ditions deteriorated, he still had a chance to win after

Shafer opened in the ninth frame. Needing two

strikes and eight pins in the 10th frame to lock Shafer

out, he left the 2-8-10 split. Needing only seven pins

to clinch the win, Shafer struck

    on his next shot.

I threw that shot in the ninthframe as good as I could possibly

throw it, Shafer said, but I just

    didnt move far enough right.

I thought I had blown another

one. Ive had some bad breaks in

    majors when I bowled pretty

good and guys I bowled against

bowled better, but Ive blown a

few, too. You just dont want to

make that your history, your rep-

    utation.

I usually dont get excited and

    show up my opponent, Shafer

    said of his emotional display

after his 10th frame strike, but

that one meant a lot to me.

Andres is a great guy, and hemade a great shot in the 10th,

too. I know he can make a great

shot when he needs to make one, but it just didnt

work. I definitely got a second life, but I got to the

finals and now well see what happens next.

The Hardwick finals were conducted on the PBAs

Scorpion lane condition, selected by Smallwood as

the highest qualifier in the Hardwick field.

The Johnny Petraglia Division finalists will be the

next group to bowl, on New Years Day at 1 p.m. ET

on ESPN. Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., who led all

World Championship qualifiers by 296 pins, has

selected the Scorpion pattern as the lane condition for

this elimination round. Other Petraglia Division play-

ers will be PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann,

Mo.; left-hander Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga,

N.Y., and Nathan Bohr of Wichita, Kan. Weber, whohas won 35 PBA Tour titles including eight majors,

has won more titles and more majors than the rest of

the 15 World Championship finalists combined (17

titles, two majors). Bohr, the only non-titlist in the

group, will make his PBA television debut.

The Petraglia Division finals air on Sunday, New

Years Day, at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Mike Aulby

Division finals, completing the preliminary elimina-

tion rounds, will air on Jan. 8, also at 1 p.m. ET.

Special pre-game shows will be webcast beginning

on the Wednesday preceding the ESPN finals on

pba.coms Xtra Frame and a post-game Xtra Frame

interview with the winners will immediately follow

    the Sunday telecasts.

Bowling statistics are a lot like

    bathing suits. They show plenty,

    but not everything.

    For instance, the money win-

ning list is important, and the

goal of every pro is to top the

list. Yet, a bowler can get red hot

in a string of events, win them orfinish high, and maybe cop a

    super special high paying event,

    and can become the leading

    money winner, even though he

cashed in a small percentage of

    the tournaments in which he

    competed.

Good guides to a bowler's abil-

ity are the percentage of cashes

and the average money won per

    tournament.

    Averages can be very deceiv-

    ing, among pros and amateurs.

As we all know, scoring condi-

tions vary, boy do they vary. In

one event a 210 average could

win, while in another a 230 aver-ages results in an also-ran posi-

tion. Thus you could have one

bowler with a less than 210 aver-

age who just happened to roll on

all the most difficult lane condi-

    tions, and another who averaged

better than 220 because he hap-

pened to roll on the soft condi-

tions. In some cases the lower

average bowler could be a better

    bowler.

    There are unfair handicaps in

that area of bowling. A bowler

can roll in one center one night a

week in one league where condi-

tions create low scoring, and he

    can post a legitimate average,

true but low. His handicap is

    based on that average, and

before it can be adjusted, he can

    feast on easier conditions, and

    win some big prize money.

    And that's an honest bowler.

    Imagine what can, and does

    happen, when a bowler plots

    and plans the low average

    script.

    Because bowling is such a

    numbers game, from the pin

count of a single ball to the

grand total of 1,000 games or

more, all sorts of statistics are

    recorded. The trouble comes

    when those statistics are taken

for gospel, rather than given a

    close, second look.

    One bowler can average 10

    pins higher than another but

isn't as valuable to a team

because he chokes in the clutch,

or he gets most of his big gameswhen the games are out of the

wood, or he comes up with a real

big game every now and then

that carry a lot of lesser games

to a good average but losing

efforts in team and head to head

    competition.

    Bowling still remains the rare

    sport to overly reward begin-

    ners for being terrible, and

rewards them even more if they

get worse. Not only that, but

they are allowed to roll for big

    money or major awards after

only a year or two in the sport.

    Handicaps were created to

equalize and find a way to put alower average bowler on a par

with those who are better so that

they can fairly compete in the

    same leagues and tournaments.

    But contrary to much com-

    plaining, too often too much

    handicap is awarded, so much

so that in some events bowlers

roll better than 900 for a three

game stint and 800s and high

700s are common. They are not

    common in ordinary play.

    The major problem with most

    handicap systems is that they

are based on the premise that

every bowler in every game is

doing his or her best. That just

    isn't so.

Too many bowlers seem to be

looking for too many edges in

    constructing teams better than

the average limits. There was a

    time when bowlers wanted to

bowl against the best and move

up in class by learning more

    against the better bowlers

    rather than getting more free

    pins.

    Bowling statistics, like bathing

suits, should be a guide, because

there could be more than meets

    the eye.

    The 2010-11 USBC National

    Standard High Average and High

Series AwardsBy Matt Cannizzaro - USBC

In the Standard high series category, three bowlers rolled a 900

series to tie in the Adult Male division.

Bill Howell III of Middletown, N.Y., accomplished the feat during

the Bruce Bryan 3 Person league at Tarsio Lanes 52 on Oct. 21,

2010, and five weeks later, on Nov. 28, Matt Latarski of Medina,

Ohio, rolled a 900 series during the Sunday Morning Trio at

Roseland Lanes. Bob Kammer Jr. of Crown Point, Ind., became the

18th bowler in history with a perfect series when he tossed his on

Jan. 8, 2011 during the Saturday Invitational League at Stardust

    Bowl II in Merrillville, Ind.

Quantrelle Green of Douglasville, Ga., had the top series for adultfemales with 870 (280, 300, 290), which was rolled in the Monday

Night Big Money league on Sept. 27, 2010 at Suburban Lanes.

In the youth division, Justin Tan of Flower Mound, Texas, came

within one frame of becoming the second youth bowler to record a

900 series, and took home the Youth Male honor with 879 (300, 300,

    279) at AMF Lewisville Lanes. During the 2009-10 season, Tan led

all youth males in the nation with a 239 average.

Katelyn Simpson of Boise, Idaho, topped the Youth Female divi-

sion with games of 233, 300 and 299 for an 832 series in the Chiefs

    league at Meridian Lanes.

In the adult category for Standard high average, Patrick Partilla of

Wilkes Barre, Pa., posted the second-highest average in USBC his-

tory with a 259 mark for 93 games in the Chacko's FBC/Dan's Pro

Shop league at Chacko's Family Bowling Center. Only Jeff Carter of

Springfield, Ill., has averaged higher, posting a 261.7 average dur-

    ing the 2000-01 season.

Teri Haefke of Austintown, Ohio, averaged 242 for 96 games in

the Thursday Night Matchplay league at Amron Lanes to lead all

    women.

Colin Dall of Council Bluffs, Iowa, averaged 240 for 90 games in

the Thunderbolts AM league at Thunderbowl to earn Youth Male

honors, while Lizabeth Kuhlkin of Schenectady, N.Y., led all youth

females with a 225 mark in the Saturday AM Major at Sportsman's

Bowl. She also led the nation a year ago with a 228 average.

    December 28 - January 3, 2012 SPORTS REPORTER 3

    ARLINGTON, Texas - With

    help from Mayor Kip Holden,

construction on the venue that will

be home to the 2012 United States

    Bowling Congress Open

    Championships got underway in

    Baton Rouge, La., last week.

    Holden and Baton Rouge Area

    Convention and Visitors Bureau

    President and CEO Paul Arrigo

helped snap the official string line

and turned over the keys to the

Baton Rouge River Center as dig-nitaries, supporters and media got

their final look at the empty con-

    vention center before construction

crews turn it into a state-of-the-art

    bowling stadium.

"We are excited to welcome the

    2012 USBC Open Championships

    back to Baton Rouge," Arrigo

said. "It is a pleasure to host the

    largest indoor participatory sport-

ing event in the world. We look

forward to the bowlers and their

families returning to our city to

enjoy our culture, cuisine and hos-

    pitality."

Earlier in the week, the USBC

    tournament crew welcomed the

first of more than 40 truckloads of

    materials needed to transform the

River Center into the biggest stage

    in bowling. Construction is sched-

uled to be complete during the

    first week of February.

    The finished venue will include

48 tournament lanes, four show-case lanes, squad room, locker

    room, concession area, offices and

vendor space that will be bustling

    with nearly 60,000 bowlers during

    the tournament's 151-day run from

    Feb. 11-July 10.

So far, more than 11,300 teams

are registered to compete in the

    2012 Open Championships, which

will be the event's second visit to

Louisiana. It first was held there,

also in Baton Rouge, in 2005.

    "We're excited about being back

in Baton Rouge, and we can't wait

for the bowlers to see all of the

changes to the city and the River

Center since we were here in

    2005," said Brian Lewis, USBC

    Managing Director of

    Tournaments. "We truly enjoyed

    the southern hospitality the first

    time around, and the community

has rolled out the red carpet for us

again this year. It has been nice to

see some familiar faces, and it hasbeen even better to see the trucks

    rolling in."

    WEBCAMS MOUNTED AND

    READY Since being introduced in

2004, one of the most popular fea-

    tures of the USBC Open

    Championships page on

    BOWL.com has been the unique

    interactive webcams that are

mounted in the rafters above the

    tournament lanes and give friends

and family members a chance to

    watch the bowlers in action.

    Traditionally, there have been five

    webcams capable of taking live

    (still) pictures of the tournament

action as it happens. Beginning in

2012, two of the cameras will be

    replaced with streaming cameras

that will sweep the venue throughout

the day and provide non-stop live

video footage. The other three cam-

eras will maintain the same capabil-

ities bowlers and fans are used to.

Viewers will be able to manipulatethe three point-and-click cameras

from home, allowing them to zoom

in or out to photograph different

    parts of the venue.

Currently, one of each type of

camera is up and running, so visitors

can stop by and check out how the

    construction process is unfolding at

the River Center. The webcams can

be accessed by visiting the Open

    Championships page on

    BOWL.com.

    ENTRY DEADLINE

    EXTENDED FOR

    2012 USBC OPEN

    CHAMPIONSHIPS

The entry deadline for the 2012

    USBC Open Championships has

been extend to March 1, 2012, so

    interested team captains have time

to sign up their teams. There still

    are some prime times available,

    but spots are filling quickly.
