Manila Design Week 2010: Design Everyday The Second Philippine Graphic Design Festival 7 – 13 August 2010

Twelve months, forty-eight weeks, three hundred sixty five days of Graphic Design all summed up into a week of art, music, fashion, street culture, collaboration, competition and celebration. What is Manila Design Week all about?

The first of its kind in the Philippines, and in the running for two years now, Manila Design Week aims to bring Philippine graphic design into the mainstream. More than that, it wants to establish the Philippines as a hub of graphic design and creativity in the region by galvanizing local talent and giving it a voice, year after year.

Manila Design Week promotes collaboration of artists in all fields of graphic design through a weeklong lineup of events held throughout the metro, with each day showcasing a different theme. Everything and anything graphic design, in all media, will be featured: from print and publication design to web and motion graphics passing through its applications in photography, advertising, music and fashion.

This year’s theme:

Design 365 days a year. DESIGN EVERYDAY.

Everyday, everyone & everything are great places to find good design.

MANILA DESIGN WEEK 2010 was a project of Team Manila Graphic Design Studio Inc., Presented by Manila Beer Power Mac Center & Bratpack In cooperation with Velprint HP Printing Maximum Advantage Rickshaw Productions Locked Down Entertainment And Ayala Malls

EXHIBIT OPENING 7 pm – 10 pm GREENBELT 5, Fashion Walk OFFICIAL MANILA DESIGN WEEK PARTY 11 pm – 2 am ENCORE, The Fort

From Tim Yap to blog personality Tricia Gosingtian to Borgy Manotoc, a dream team of photographers and graphic designers aimed to portray what’s in the bag of 30 style icons of different backgrounds, ultimately unearthing the lifestyles of each. With Bratpack showcasing the different brands and bags under its helm, from Eastpak and Jansport to Timbuk2, the teams took on the creative challenge of infusing the icons’ style into the look and feel of the exhibit held at the Greenbelt 5 Fashion Walk, with the icons’ bag contents as the main representation.

And in keeping with the theme of Fashion Night, Sarah Meier along with fashion bag police Lotho Lotho unearthed more intrigues as they inspected the bags of the night’s attendees with the most stylish getting Kangol headwear, and those with the happenstance of having an Apple product winning even more Apple gear care of Power Mac Center. 8 pm – 2 am CUBAO EXPO (previously Marikina Shoe Expo) Araneta Center, Gen. Romulo Ave., Cubao, Quezon City

Music and art have always been known to tame the savage beasts in us but during MDW 2010’s closing event, Manila Sound Vision, the two induced quite the opposite in its attendees for it was a night that released a savage passion for music and art unlike any other.

THE Clothing store set the stage for the glorious return of 70s rock legends like the Juan Dela Cruz band, Sampaguita, Asin by way of vinyl sleeve designs created by today’s rising and prominent artists and graphic designers. The limited space was transformed into an intricate web of suspended vinyl sleeve artworks while Team Manila DJs welcomed exhibit goers and curious bystanders with infectious beats from the turntable.

The whole of Cubao Expo was in high gear as a flurry of sights and sounds bombarded everyone present : music videos made by Big Top Media and First Academy of Computer Arts and the corresponding performances of headliner bands like Urbandub, Up Dharma Down, SinoSikat? and Razorback were launched and the show continued with rockin’ performances by Imago, Sideshow, Techy Romantics, Gaijin, Taken by Cars with DJs Arbiewon, Switch Trick, Stolen Kisses and Guadakomeda.

Overflowing Manila Beer kept the crowd company while they took in the wild and art-filled night that was Manila Sound Vision at Cubao X.
