Malcolm’s background • Malcolm’s mother, Louise Norton Little, was a homemaker • Malcolm’s father, Earl Little, was a Baptist minister and an avid supporter of

Black Nationalist• 8 children in total• Earl’s civil rights activist created death threats from the organization Black

Legion, forcing the family to move twice before Malcolm's fourth birthday• He lived a horrible life• His father was killed for being a supporter of Marcus Garvey, a Black Nationalist

leader• In 1837, Louise left emotionally unstable and was sent to a mental hospital • Malcolm and his 7 siblings were then separated into foster homes and

institutions.

Why is Malcolm considered a leader?

• Malcolm wanted to help give Civil Rights to African Americans

• He wanted to do something more than to just to talk to the white people, he was willing to use violence if necessary

• This act attracted many African American believers and probably hastened the Civil Rights Movement
