In Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, there is a scene where the two main characters play a game called “questions.”

Guildenstern: What does it all add up to?

Rosencrantz: Can't you guess?

Guildenstern: Were you addressing me?

Rosencrantz: Is there anyone else?

Guildenstern: Who?

Rosencrantz: How would I know? Guildenstern: Why do you ask?

Rosencrantz: Are you serious?

Guildenstern: Was that rhetoric?

Rosencrantz: No. Guildenstern: Statement! Two all. Game point.

It is a wonderful, fast-paced scene where the two of them are only allowed to ask questions, which can be a demanding practice. It can be difficult to quickly think of questions to ask while seeming to answer the other player’s questions, or at least not completely avoiding them.

Asking questions is central to Jewish learning. Scholars of rabbinic commentary teach that the way to understand Rashi’s commentaries is to ask, “What is Rashi’s problem here?” Any Midrash we know serves the purpose of answering a question the rabbis had. Why was Abraham chosen? See the Midrash about Abraham smashing the idols. How could God have killed so many Egyptians crossing the Red Sea? See the story about God scolding the angels. Questions help us better understand whatever it is we are learning, so it makes sense that a people who has been around for thousands of years embraces questioning so willingly.

When we ask questions, we increase our understanding. Maybe not completely, but we cannot ever learn more unless we have questions. The better the question, the stronger the learning. The best questions are the ones that stump the teacher, and a good teacher will say, “I don’t know, so let’s find out together!” Then both the student and the teacher get to learn, and what could be better?

My favorite sessions throughout the course of a programming year are the “Ask Rabbi Young” sessions we do for Yom Kippur afternoon or for the occasional Friday night teaching. These give me the opportunity to teach what others want to learn, and they help plan for future sessions because I know what you are looking to learn.

Since Study and Learning Through Questioning is one of our 40 Favorite Things About Judaism, I hope you will continue to ask questions to help enrich your understanding of Jewish life. Send me an email with whatever questions about Judaism you are hoping to understand, and I will either answer or learn with you to figure out some answers. Who knows? Maybe your question will appear in a future teaching here at CBT. The only way to find out is to keep asking.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP CBT F INANCIALLY

Tevet 3—Shevat 4 5777

January 2017

At the November congregational meeting, our Treasurer, Adam Lang, gave an insightful and eye-opening look into the current and future finances of CBT. I will forego the details of his presentation and focus on one key point as a reminder to those who were present, and to inform those who were not. Adam challenged each of our families to make an additional $89 contribution above regular donations to help reduce the deficit. I send a sincere thank you to those who made contributions that day and in the weeks following the meeting. If you would like to help, please do so now while you are thinking about it.

What some may not know is there are other ways to help CBT financially that do not involve writing a check or swiping a credit card. Simply do the things you already do – eat and shop. What makes this opportunity even sweeter is that it does not cost any of us anything extra to participate. CBT simply gets a cut of money already

being spent.

As Jews, we love to eat so it should come as no surprise that many of CBT’s fundraising opportunities center around food. Our Suppers4Shul program, for example, has been wildly successful. For those who do not know, every month a selected restaurant partners with us for one or more days. When the bill is paid, the patron turns in a special flyer with their payment. A percentage of each check that has that flyer attached to it is donated to CBT by the restaurant. The percentage is typically 10 to 20%. Check page 11 in this issue of the Bulletin to see a list of restaurants that have participated since July of 2016, their contributions, and the total raised. More importantly, note that this month we are partnering with Turnip Rose Cafe. They will donate 25% - the highest percentage of any restaurant so far. Look for the flyer inserted with this Bulletin and posted in the lobby of CBT, mark your calendar, and start working on that appetite! Who knew that more than our bellies could benefit so well from lunch or dinner out with friends?

Do you shop at Ralphs? Do you have their loyalty card? This is another way to help CBT. The next time you are in the store, check with customer service to ensure your card is linked to CBT. Then, when you shop and scan your card or enter your phone number at checkout, a portion of your total bill will be donated to CBT.

If you have a smartphone, the Communities for Cause (CFC) application is one more way to make dining and even shopping count. After downloading and installing the app, create an account and designate Congregation B’nai Tzedek as your cause. Then, simply eat or shop at a participating merchant and use the app to snap and upload a picture of your receipt. CFC takes care of the rest and sends a percentage of the sale to CBT.

Do you prefer to shop online? CFC is also online at www.communitiesforcause.com. Check their website for a full list of participating merchants. Some of the more popular stores include Alex and Ani, American Apparel, Macy’s, iTunes, Best Buy and Target.

Do you shop at Amazon.com? Start each shopping experience at smile.amazon.com, instead, and a portion of your eligible total will be donated to CBT. There is a one-time step of associating your Amazon account with CBT as the charity to support. Search for “Congregation B’nai Tzedek” and confirm that the search result is “Congregation B Nai Tzedek” in Fountain Valley as seen in the picture, below. Note that there is a space between the ‘B’ and ‘N’ of “B Nai”. Be careful! There is a Congregation Bnai Tzedek (no space in “Bnai”) in Potomac, MD. Make sure you pick the correct one! After your account is linked to CBT (in Fountain Valley), shop as you normally would and know that you are supporting our shul.

A nosh? Cha-ching! A new pair of shoes? Cha-ching! A new flat screen? Cha-chingaling!! While not everyone may be able to meet Adam’s challenge and make an extra $89 donation, it is nice to know that every day spending is an easy and painless way to help CBT meet its financial goals.

Wishing you and yours a healthy and happy 2017, Sam

Sisterhood Shabbat Friday, January 20, 2017 Service begins at 7:30 PM

Please plan to join us for worship led by the women of CBT Sisterhood and wear your Sisterhood pins. If you are interested in participating and have not already RSVP’d, please contact Heather Miller at [email protected] or at 714-814-2789 and let her know if you would like a Hebrew part or an English part. We would be delighted to have each member participate in the way that is comfortable and meaningful for her.

As the year 2017 begins, Brotherhood has resolved to offer programs of interest to the various age groups of our community.

The next Brotherhood event is Pizza and a Movie at CBT on Saturday, February 18 at 6:30 PM. We will enjoy pizza and soda, followed by a full-length, Jewish-themed comedy.

The movie, compliments of Bill Geltman, features three Jewish comedians who bring their “Borscht Belt” humor from New York’s Catskill Mountains to Broadway. The routines are hilarious!

Other programs being considered for the future include speakers, the Men's Seder, a game night and dining out.

In addition to planning events, rest assured that Brotherhood will maintain its service to CBT. We will continue ushering at Shabbat and other holiday services, and barbecuing at religious school events, Mitzvah Day and the annual CBT picnic at the end of the school year.

The Future of CBT It’s a new year – but we’re still celebrating Congregation B’nai Tzedek’s 40th

anniversary, even as we look forward to our next 40 years. Mark your

calendars for our fifth and final special Shabbat service, a tribute to The

Future of CBT on Friday, February 3, 2017.

Students currently enrolled in the Stephen J. Einstein Religious School will

join Rabbi David N. Young and cantorial soloist Jenna Sagan on the bimah.

We will enjoy a pre-Oneg in the lobby at 6:00 PM and the Shabbat service in the

Sanctuary at 6:30 PM. Dinner will follow in the Social Hall. The CBT 40th

Anniversary Fund is sponsoring the pre-Oneg, and Joel and Pam Rosen are

sponsoring the Oneg.

Thank You Thanks once again to Rose Lesser and Debbie Biebelberg for co-chairing our

months-long program of 40th anniversary activities. Hats off, as well, to

Sherrie Neft and her team, who reworded many of our favorite songs to

apply to the celebrations, to Jay Seiden for his direction, and to the CBT

Players for the renditions.

Thanks also to Barbara Stein for coordinating the Shabbat services with

Rabbi David N. Young, and to Marteen Levin and Jackie Williams for

coordinating the December alumni service.

A nod as well to our outstanding clergy – cantorial soloist Jenna Sagan and

Rabbi Young – for making our special Shabbat services truly special!

JOIN TEAM CHAI ’S F IGHT AGAINST CANCER

Congregation B’nai Tzedek’s Team Chai invites participation in and support for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, a 22-hour event designed to raise money and awareness to fight cancer. The date and location have changed this year because the Fountain Valley and Cos-ta Mesa organizing committees have combined to form Relay for Life Costa Mesa-Fountain Valley. This is the Costa Mesa event’s 10th anniversary, so this year’s Relay will be held at Davis Magnet High School, 1050 Arlington Drive in Costa Mesa. The cities will alternate for future events. In addition, the date has been moved up. The 2017 Relay is scheduled to start at 11:00 AM on April 29, 2017, and will conclude at 9:00 AM on April 30, 2017. If you’ve participated before, we hope you’ll join us again. If you’ve not been a part of this social action event in the past, then make the decision to join us this year. Choose to camp out on the track overnight with your family – or just sign up to walk laps for an hour or two. Hang out at the track, enjoy the camaraderie, and get to know your fellow congregants better. You can also donate to the team or raise money as a “virtual walker.” For more information on how to register, contact Cap-tain Amy Benton at [email protected]. Team Chai has raised more than $230,000 for the American Cancer Society since the Fountain Valley Relay for Life began in 2004. Sign up for Team Chai at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/CBTTeamChai. We’ve al-ready hit the ground running, with team registrations and donations starting to come in. You can also contact Amy to join Team Chai’s Facebook group, which will provide updates on the event, discuss fundraising strategies and team goals, and address questions congregants might have.

INTERESTING ADULT EDUCATION—INTERESTED?

Torah Study: Every Saturday morning from 9:15 AM to 10:15 AM Join us for a line-by-line study of the Torah. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to learn and engage our Torah! This is a lively and entertaining discussion to which everyone is invited.

Adult Classes: Every Tuesday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM 1. For the first hour, enjoy a variety of teachers discussing topics of interest, from health care to obscure Jewish texts to punk rock.

See the CBT website for the current schedule. 2. For the second hour, Rabbi Young takes us on a tour of the Talmud. Don't know what the Talmud is? Come and see for yourself!

No prior experience or course work necessary as we read 2,000-year-old teachings of venerated rabbis and apply them to our lives today.

SPONSORING AN ONEG JUST GOT EASIER !

Have you wanted to sponsor an Oneg, but were not sure what to do or how much it would cost? It’s easy! You can be a sponsor for $270. This represents the actual cost of the Oneg. This covers food, setup, and cleanup, and your name will be listed as the Oneg sponsor in the Shabbat Announcement. CBT will handle all of the details. All you have to do is show up and enjoy! Furthermore, because you pay CBT, the $270 is tax deductible. It’s a win-win!

You can also honor the memory of loved ones or celebrate simchas by making contributions to the Oneg Fund. This will help ensure funds are available to cover costs in the event an Oneg is unsponsored.

See? It is easy. It all starts with a call to Yesi in the office to let her know when you want to sponsor. Why not call 714-963-4611 or email ([email protected]) today?

IMPORTANT NOTICE ON FLYERS , FACEBOOK , AND THE CBT WEBSITE

Flyers or material that will be printed or distributed are to be emailed to [email protected] for review, editing and approval. Approved items will then be forwarded to the office for printing and/or distribution. Items sent directly to Yesi or the office will NOT be printed or distributed.

Anything to be placed on the official CBT Facebook page goes to Jay Howard, [email protected]. Posting on the CBT Membership Group Message Board is open to all members.

Anything to be placed on the CBT website goes to Adam Lang, [email protected].

The CBT Judaica Shop is open on Sundays by appointment. Please call Heather Miller at 714-962-5552 for information.
