(the above story is one of 28 from the “Cape Breton ChristmasMemories” book - on sale now - just in time for Christmas)

SLEIGH BELLS RING Christmas has always been a favorite time of year forme. I like the whole idea of Christmas, getting the tree, decorating the house, the many different foods and theChristmas carols. Another favorite thing we like to do eachyear as a special treat is to take a sleigh ride in the country. The Peters family from Mira Road always had sleighrides offered to the public. I remember one particular year, grade 9 in Park Junior High. Our home room teacher hadarranged a sleigh ride for a group of boys and girls. Thegirls liked the idea of it and the boys were there becausethe girls were there.

We set off about 7:00 pm when everybody was loadedinto the sleigh with hay bales all around for shelter andwarmth. There were blankets provided but the boyswouldn’t take them because we would look like sissies. So we braved the cold and actually it wasn’t too bad asthe girls were singing carols and the horses were clipclopping along and there was a little bit of snow falling. But things were about to change. Calvin Boutilier had asling shot with him and to spice things up a little, hedecided to take a shot at the horse. He let fly with a smallpellet and it hit the horse clear on the rump The horsereared up and began to trot. The girls screamed and theboys held on for dear life. The driver did his level best tocontrol the runaway horse. Just as things were getting under control, the sleighrunners slipped off the path and the sleigh tipped on itsside. Hay bales, girls, blankets and 1 startled teacher allwent flopping to one side. Fortunately there were noinjuries but everybody was shook up. The driver was ableto get the horses back on the path and we continued backto the starting point at the normal pace. The driver apologized for the horses and wonderedaloud why they reared as they did. Nobody said anythingbut all the boys looked at Calvin. We went back to schoolon Monday and the story spread but of course it wasenhanced by the boys to a life and death struggle forsurvival. But each year when our family goes for its annualsleigh ride, I keep a close watch on all the boys aboardthe sleigh, looking for any telltale signs of mischief. Itdoesn’t hurt to be careful.

For this week’s review I’vechosen to write about one ofthe most controversialdocumentaries I have everseen; “Hail Satan?”. The gistof the documentary is how TheSatanic Temple “TST” (formedin 2013 by Lucien Greavesand Malcolm Jarry-interestingly enough based inS a l e m ,Massachusetts)used the state ofArkansas’s ownlaws on theseparation ofchurch and stateagainst it topromote theerecting of TST’sBaphomet (thesatanic goatp u r p o r t e d l yworshiped by the Knights’Templar-and TST) statue rightalongside the existingmonument of The TenCommandments. According totheir press releases TheSatanic Temple uses Satanicimagery to promote equality, social justice, and ultimately, again, the separation of churchand state. Their statedmission is “to encouragebenevolence and empathyamong all people”. There’s agreat sequence in the docdetailing the Satanic Panicfrom the 1970’s to the 1990’s-touching on everything fromOprah, to heavy metal music,to Dungeons and Dragons anddaycare centre satanic

abuses-all lies. The SatanicTemple uses satire, theatricalploys, humor and direct legalaction in their publiccampaigns to “generateattention and prompt peopleto reevaluate fears andperceptions”, and to “highlightreligious hypocrisy andencroachment on religiousfreedom”. All of this plays outin living colour in thisdocumentary as The SatanicTemple shines a light on howChristian values are creepingback into American society’s

political system onevery level. Ironically,the whole idea oferecting TenC o m m a n d m e n t sstatues around theU.S. started in 1956,as a movie tie-in forCharlton Heston’s“The TenCommandments”. Forthe most part thei n d e p e n d e n t

filmmaker Penny Lane choseeloquent and intelligent peoplefrom TST for the on-camerainterviews, which quickly getsjuxtaposed with the fervent, eternal damnation venting ofthe born-again Christians inthe film. As the documentaryplays out TST takes the stepof banning a member whenshe endorses violence andovert illegal actions-things thatTST stands against.Interestingly enough, whenPenny Lane finished makingthis documentary shebecame a member of TST.Again, this documentary iscontroversial, and to some it’sthought-provoking, to otherspure evil. Which one is it? Thatis up to you.
