A Magical Night for the Miners’ First Noel
At St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church The Miners’ First Noel first started five years ago when Bob Quinnhad the idea to put off a community Christmas concert. After gettingthe okay to do so, Bob immediately sat down and wrote the Miners’Noel song which opens each Christmas Show.
On Friday, December 28th the residents of Sydney Mines andsurrounding areas were treated a magical night of music and talentthat was top notch. People not only from the surrounding areasattended but people came from all over and even families that werehome on holidays came to see this magnificent lineup of performers. This concert was started by Bob Quinn five years and is starting tobe the highlight of the season each year at Christmas time at St.Andrew’s.
When Bob Quinn reached out to his circle of friends in the fall tosee if they would be interested in putting off a Christmas show insupport of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church the answer was aresounding yes. Bob and his family came home from to do thisconcert what a concert it was. Wow!
At 7 p.m. the show opened with Cameron and MacKenzie Clarkedoing a reading and then it was time for the performers to do theirstuff. The show went into full swing and there was no shortage oftalent on stage this particular evening. Stewart MacNeil started theshow off in fine style by singing the signature song “The Miners’First Noel” and was backed up by the whole crew of performers.Lucy MacNeil followed by doing a beautiful Christmas piece thateveryone loved and enjoyed. Lucy’s daughter Kenna MacDougalldid a fiddle solo and also a tune with the group and it’s no trouble tosee the musical talent here. Besides a few solo’s, there was alsoduo’s during the night. Bob’s wife Jennifer (Whalen) Quinn who isstill well known in Sydney Mines performed a duo with her daughterKate Quinn. Later we saw Kate do a beautiful solo when she sang“Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas”. Like her mom, Kate has avoice of an angel and puts so much emotion and feeling into eachpiece she sings.
Later that evening the audience was treated to yet another otherand daughter duo by Lucy MacNeil and her daughter AmeliaMacDougall when they did a Christmas song “Christmas Cookieswhich was very upbeat and lively and somewhat of a tongue twister.Amelia like her mom has such a beautiful voice and I’m sure we willsee more of her in years to come. Grant Eisan was one of the newperformers that were introduced to the audience for the first timesince The Miners’ Noel concerts started and he pleasantly surprisedthe audience when he began to sing a Chuck Berry Christmas tuneand later sang Blue Christmas with Kate Quinn. Hopefully we willbe seeing more of Grant and Kate in future concerts. Other newperformers were Tony Quinn with his daughter Shannon Quinn.Tony with his quick wit and one liners had a few chuckles comingfrom the audience. Shannon his daughter who is a fiddle playerhas played throughout Canada and Europe but loves to play withher dad whenever she has the chance. And no show would becomplete if we didn’t see a little step dancing from Stewart MacNeilwhile Matt MacIsaac (Kate Quinn’s husband) played the bagpipes. This really had the audience tapping their feet and clapping theirhands as Stewart stepped it out in fine style as he always does. There were so many beautiful songs, solo’s, duo’s during theevening that simply took your breath away.
So as you can imagine there was a lot of talent on stage thisspecial night and the audience enjoyed every minute of it. To think,it all started with a guy that wanted to do something nice, to giveback in some small way to his community because he fell in lovewith the people and the town of Sydney Mines. If you haven’t seen aBob Quinn concert yet, I would advise the next time there is one toget your tickets and I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Hello, welcome to my firstcolumn of 2019. Question: didyou buy music in 2018? Idon’t mean paying for astreaming service-actuallypurchasing a physical copyof a song or an album? If youbought a CD, a record, anaudio cassette or apromotional 8-track tape(Nielsen Music Canadareported approximately 8500cassettes were sold in 2018)you ‘bought’ and own thatmusic. If you bought musicthrough iTunes or any othermusic provider-you did not‘buy’ music-you bought‘access’ to that music, andeven if you downloaded it toyour phone or an mp3 playeryou still only bought ‘access’.The exception to that is if youburnt that music to a CD.Since the dawn of the MP3(1993) the music worldwitnessed a technologicalleap of epic proportions;granted the MP3 offered anew and cheaper way formusicians and bands tospread their music literallyaround the world, but it alsomade music so readilyavailable that there was soontoo much music (no pun onthe Canadian music channel).Gone were the days where ifyou wanted to buy music youhad to go to a record store,Woolco, Zellers, Walmart orjoin Columbia House to getrecords and CD’s-soon
replaced by free Napster andKazaa downloads...and othersites offering money fornothing-beats for free. Musicis now super-disposable (justlisten to the latest pop drivelchoking up the airwaves, likeCardi B, here today gone 10minutes later) leading to asad state of affairs as recordcompanies had to find newways to recoup costs, andmake profits. Many didn’t, andwent under. The dynamics ofmaking money off music waschanged forever, and worst ofall a song can now get anumber 1 spot on the chartsjust by internet hits, likes ordrops, and never actually selleven a fraction of what lowercharting artists sold. 10, 12or 15 million internet dropscan make a hit. If you couldget enough people to go alongwith it you could probablyrecord the sound of a toiletflushing and score a top 10chart spot-chances of thathappening is not that far fromreality, based on the currentmusic zeitgeist. The light atthe end of the tunnel is thefact that there has been aresurgence of people buyingrecord players and vinyl forquite some time now, andsome music fans neverstopped buying music in oneform or another. Dire Straitshit song “Money For Nothing”may have been prophetic (itwas also the first music videoto air on MTV Europe in 1987)but to quote Neil Young; “rockand roll will never die”.

There’s a New Year’s Day tradition in many cold, icy townsand villages that never fails to draw the curious and thecrazies. I’m speaking of the annual Polar Bear Dip wherenormally sane and rational people don skimpy bathing suitsand run into ice cold, frigid ocean water. Why do theydo this? Most people say it’sfor a lark, others say it’s tokeep them from gettingcolds and others are justplain drunk or stupid….orboth. At any rate, it wasalways something ourfamily did during the Christmasvacation. We would pile in the car all dressed in winterboots and winter jackets and head down to South Bar wherethe cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean waited. The area thatthe swimmers would enter the water was known locally asPolar Bear because even in the heat of summer the waterwas extremely cold. Many people bring cameras and cheer on the brave soulsand usually the local TV station and newspaper cover theevent. We usually took a camera to take some pictures. This year, 1988, we had a special reason to be there. OurUncle Ned decided to become a Polar Bear. He wasn’tespecially athletic and he was usually pale in the summerso we wondered why he would want to try this. When the time came for the swimmers to go in, a starterwould line the swimmers up and set off a starter pistol andthey all ran and dived into the water. As I’ve said, Ned wasn’tparticularly athletically gifted so when the starter gun wentoff Ned surged forward but he started to slip and lose hisfooting. He grabbed at the nearest handhold whichhappened to be Nellie Pearson’s butt. She retaliated with aslap that sent Ned swirling to the right. Again he grabbedfor a handhold and it was the back of Sammy Dufour’sswim trunks.
Down went Ned, down went Sammy’s trunks. Camerasclicked, senior women hooted and Sammy turned awonderful shade of red. By this time Ned was actually inthe water still holding onto Sammy’s trunks. Sammy rippedthem out of his hand and put them back on. When Nedtried to stand he was paralyzed with the cold and severalof the retuning Polar Bear members fell over him and endedup in a tangle of shivering bodies. I thought my father was going to have a heart attack ashe was laughing so hard. My mother had tears runningdown her face and Dorothy Muldoon, 96, her first time atthe Polar Bear Dip remarked, “If I knew it was going to bethis much fun, I’d have come a long time ago.” Uncle Ned never went back for the annual dip but we stillhave pictures and every once in awhile, I take them out ofthe album for a good laugh.
