Darren Strong from Strong Chiropractic, announces a new, sophisticated computerized decompressiontable that allows the spine to be gently stretched andrelaxed for spinal decompression therapy. The pattern of alternating pulling andrelaxing creates vacuum-like pressurewhich allows disc material that washerniated or protruded to be pulledback in the disc over time. Patients will notice a reduction of theirpain during these treatment sessions. Stopin today and ask about the newtable and how you can benefit.

Lots of great news to celebrate this week - we dodged a bulletwith the Hurricane Teddy and there was very little damage andpower outages - Kudos to Nova Scotia Power for their readi-ness - I saw at least 30 power trucks from New Brunswick at alocal Sydney Hotel in anticipation of the outages - I’m glad wedidn’t have to use them but Nova Scotia Power should be recog-nized as having the foresight to request help prior to the storm.....WOW, K-LEE RADIO is celebrating its 11th Anniversary onThursday, October 11th at the North Sydney Fire Hall on PierceStreet, from 1:00 - 3:00 - you are all invited to hear some greatCape Breton and Oldies music and we’ll have lots of FreeGiveaways to hand out - no admission for this live show, it suredoesn’t feel like 11 years since we first went on the air in Baddeckin a small office over Tom’s Pizza in Main Street in Baddeck, lots of great memories and laughs at the first few shows with allthe mistakes and bloopers we had before we gained on airexperience..... By now you should have receive your CBRMVoting ballot with your PIN number to vote - remember thatthis year there will be NO paper ballots, voting will be done byphone or via the internet but you MUST have your PIN, if youdidn’t get yours, contact CBRM immediately...... some restric-tions are easing up on local clubs and businesses for the Fall -dart leagues, hockey leagues and washer toss teams are nowregistering and that is a good thing, you still have to adhere tosocial distancing protocols but most of us are doing that any-way...... I would like to extend my congratulations to my nephewGary Gray who will be getting married in Calgary, we thoughtyou’d never “tie the knot”, so congratulations to you and yourbeautiful fiance and best of luck on your wedding day..... I want toshare a little story about my grandson Shay Campbell, 6 yearsold, who had to get some blood work done, when his Motherasked how he did with his father taking him to get the blood workdone he said, “I went nuts!”, I think this sums up quite well theprocedure of having your blood taken..... When Glass Tiger’s debutalbum “The Thin Red
Line” was originally releasedin 1986 it became animportant album to me forpersonal reasons, and was away to mark a milestoneyear. The red plastic cassetteversion of the album wasgiven to me as a gift-and Istill it (in mint condition atthat) so the news of aremastered release byUniversal Music Canada on180 gram orange and blackvinyl grabbed my attention, and the record looks so cool.Lead singer Alan Frew said:“Re-mastering and re-issuing “The Thin Red Line”is not only a testament tothe enduring legacy of analbum, it’s also a testamentto the enduring legacy of aband and it’s fans. You arethe best in the world and youshare with us your love, notonly of GLASS TIGER butalso a love of one of thegreatest decades in thehistory of music.” The firstsingle originally released was“Don’t Forget Me (When I’mGone)” with Bryan Adamson backup vocals, and itbecame a number-one hitsingle here in Canada, and atop 5 hit in the U.S. Theband followed that up withmy favourite song off thealbum, “Someday”, whichalso became a top 10 hit.The title track is an amazing
song that has such amemorable music video withScottish Highlandersmarching to battle (I’ve readthat the song is about the93rd Scottish Highlandersstand in the Crimean waragainst a Russian cavalrycharge at the Battle ofBalaclava in 1854). “I Will BeThere”, “You’re What I lookFor” (with a bilingual chorus)and “Closer To You” are allgreat songs, but one songin particular that reallyimpressed me with it ’suniqueness was the exoticU2 sounding “AncientEvenings”, and is actuallythe opening song on a liveconcert video broadcast byMuchMusic in 1986 that youcan find on YouTube. Theconcert has all of thealbum’s songs, and is a treatto watch. Last year GlassTiger released their fifthstudio album, and were onthe road touring. Hopefully‘someday’ soon we’ll be ableto catch Alan & the boys liveon stage as they transportus all back to 1986 and atime when Glass Tiger roaredloud & proud as one ofCanada’s finest.

NORTHSIDE NEWS The governments of Canada and Nova Scotia recognize the dif-ferent ways that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted smallerand rural communities across the province. Both governments aremaking strategic investments in infrastructure to meet the spe-cific needs of rural Nova Scotian municipalities and help themstrengthen their local economies. That is why the governments have been taking decisive actiontogether to support families, businesses and communities, andcontinue to look ahead to see what more can be done.Jaime Battiste, Member of Parliament for Sydney–Victoria, onbehalf of the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Womenand Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, theHonourable Derek Mombourquette, Minister of Energy and Minesand Member of the Legislative Assembly for Sydney-Whitney Pier, and Carol Pendergast, Executive Director of the Horizon Achieve-ment Centre, today announced funding to build a new facility forthe Horizon Achievement Centre. The new facility in Harbourside Commercial Park will meet thegrowing needs of the organization which provides vocational train-ing and employment services for adults with intellectual disabili-ties or those who face employment barriers. The project will allowthe organization to expand its services and the number of individu-als it serves. The Government of Canada is investing more than $2.6 millionthrough the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure Stream(RNIS) of the Investing in Canada program in this project. TheGovernment of Nova Scotia is contributing $2 million while theHorizon Achievement Centre is providing the balance of funding.

On behalf of Clifford Street Youth Centre North Sydney, and non profits everywhere, I am asking you to grill thecandidates in upcoming municipal election about whattheir plan is for the many many volunteer groups that arethe glue that binds our communities together.
I listened this morning, on CBC radio, to interviews withDistrict XXX candidates essentially regurgitating the sametired words; equalization, doctors, health care, jobs andfinally childhood poverty... each made the usual hollowpromises, although some have some actual experience,on the subjects but offered no real meaningful solutions.I am asking you, the voter, to press these, your, candidates for what they have actually done, [pastperformance is often one indicator of future performance]not what they plan to do if elected blah blah blah. If thesefolks say they were “on a board” ask them what theyactually did... did they attend the meetings, did they applyfor funds, fundraise, physically do the work? and finallywhat benefit to their group happened because they werethere? did they perform or were they padding a resume? This would be a true indicator if their word reflecting whothey are and more importantly how they may perform ifthey are elected... press them hard for answers!
We have had far to many ‘invisible’ elected officials![Get elected then disappear from sight/do nothing.] Wehave also had some amazingly engaged representationas well.. reward those that served you, and others, well, vote for them!
Grrrrr.....As I often speak on the effects of poverty I amcomfortable speaking about it and I take real offense tothose that mutter the word poverty in a speech whilehaving no clue as to what or how it impacts the residentsthey plan to represent. Poverty has been theeee word ofthe past few years. Large groups that fundraise bandy itabout suggesting they are “going to reduce poverty by1% each year” if only you would give to them etc etc...please check the track records of these groups to see ifthey remotely met their stated goals, if they fairlydistributed the funds or did they just fund the same oldunderperforming groups with no real change inoutcomes? [ the old adage of doing the same thing overand over again but expecting a different result come tomind here... ]
A number of the large ‘shark’ agencies are now startingto swim in the shallow water trying to suck up even the
smallest of resources. [donations] Due to the covid crisismany large well organized groups are finding, as are we atClifford Street, that donations are way down. So the largergroups, [ the sharks ] with huge infrastructure and fixedcosts , are now looking for ANY funding from ANY sourceincluding many areas/small dollar amounts that they wouldnever ‘lower’ themselves to associate with normally. Anumber of us smaller groups are thinking on stepping up tobecome the big league fundraisers... or should we stay smalland keep it all? Keep a watchful eye for those that promisethe moon, whether it is charities or those looking to beelected... a great teachable moment!
In the past Clifford Street Youth Centre would obtain anelections Canada ballot box, for our voting, then channelthe children into learning about each candidate to see whatthey were all about! Then we would have our election justlike the adults. The results varied, but the learning wasinvaluable. With so many stepping down it is YOUR turn tolearn about the candidates, press them on their promises, see what they have actually done. [ some have doneincredible things by the way ]
This election is very important as we have a number offolks stepping down from their long standing roles in publicservice...please take the time to be certain that the nextperson we elect for your municipal area will actually step upand do something for the constituents. Your future enjoyment, wherever you live, depends on it.
To those that stepped up now, and in the past, to run, goodluck, thank you for the brave step to become ourrepresentative for our town[s]... now just don’t forget toactually get up and lead for us ALL. For those retiring thankyou for your service to community and paving the way forthose that follow.
To donate, or volunteer time, please contact 902 794 9371or [email protected] for email.
Now is the winter of our discontent...what do the candidates say?
