GHOST - In last week’s columnI mentioned that I would bewriting about the Swedish bandGhost, and I also said that thiswould be a bit of a weird musicalchoice of mine-so again beforewarned, this column is notfor all musical tastes. Within ayear and a half Ghost (Ghost BC)have become my favourite band.In 2006 Ghost BC was themaniacal brainstorm of TobiasForge; he had a vision of notjust a band, but anall-encompassingmusical conceptthat crossed(literally) into therealms of sacrilege, and borderlineblasphemy as heand fellow bandmembers donnedgarb normallyassociated with theCatholic Church-and indeedembraced all things anti-Christand pro Satan. That was all anact, as Tobias (aka-PapaEmeritus) had a master plan forthe band’s future. Little did heknow that the goal he set forthe next 5 years would be on topof him almost immediately, andGhost BC had to ramp thingsup and prepare for “the bigtime”. Tobias Forge is a musicaland theatrical genius; of coursea number of the band’s songsdo carry a satanic slant, but theyare no more satanic than KISS,Black Sabbath or a number ofbands that were falsely accusedof Satanism, but Ghost playedon that theme big-time, andreaped the rewards of a counterculture that now worships allthings Ghost. Almost like areligion? Conversely, some ofGhost’s songs are incredibly

touching, inspirational anddeeply spiritual. For example;“He Is”, “If You Have Ghosts”,“Bible”, “See The Light”, “ProMemoria” and especially theheartfelt “Life Eternal” areamazing numbers. From thestage Tobias preached aboutpassing through the bad timeslife can bring, and how one isnever alone as long as theyreach out. On the very day thatTobias released his first songyears ago, his brother died, sohe understands greatheartache and loss-but todayis a married man with twin girls

who appreciatesall that life has tooffer. His on-stagepersona is a merecharacter in aGothic horror tale.Although TobiasForge’s realidentity was aguarded secretright up to last year, concealed by themasks of Papa

Emeritus I, II and III, as well ashis present incarnation asCardinal Copia, his visage isindeed dramatic-andmenacing. Ghost havereleased 4 albums and 2 EP’s,won Grammy Awards, and arefilling concert venues touringalone, as well as opening forthe likes of Metallica (who arehuge fans of the band) andGhost BC’s first EP wasproduced by Dave Grohl, whoalso played drums in the studio-and did some special l iveappearances with the band-allthe while wearing a NamelessGhoul mask. I would neverattempt to ‘convert’ people toGhost-they are indeed not foreveryone. For those of us whohave found, and embracedGhost musically, we are betterfor it.

CAN YOU SPLIT YOUR PENSION INCOME? Since 2007, you may split certain pension income with your spouseor common-law partner. This can be done if the following conditionsare met:- the pensioner and spouse or common-law partner must livetogether- the pensioner and spouse or common-law partner are residents ofCanada on December 31 of the year- the pensioner received pension income that is eligible for thepension income tax credit. Up to 1/2 of eligible pension income may be allocated to thetaxpayer's spouse when the tax returns are filed. In some cases thiswill result in a pension income tax credit for the transferee. No fundsare actually transferred using pension splitting - it is simply a methodfor reducing the taxable income of one spouse by allocating income,on the tax return, to the other spouse.Income that does not qualify as pension income for the pensionincome tax credit:- Old Age Security or Canada Pension Plan benefits- Quebec Pension Plan benefits- death benefits- retiring allowances- RRSP withdrawals other than annuity payments- payments from salary deferral arrangements, retirement compen-sation arrangements, employee benefit plans, or employee trusts. The transfer must be agreed to by both spouses, by filing the CanadaRevenue Agency (CRA) form Form T1032 Joint Election to Split Pen-sion Income, with the tax return. Form T1032 also provides an areafor input of the total amount of withholding tax deducted from thepension income of the transferor. The withholding taxes related tothe transferred pension income are then transferred to the spouse,on a pro-rata basis. Thus, if 40% of the pension income istransferred to the spouse, 40% of the withholding taxes will also betransferred.
