TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 4

One of such crowd-pulling dancers during the silent filmshows was the noted silent film star J. Susheela Devi. Attrac-tive and shapely, she played lead roles in many silent films. Her most popular film was R. Prakash’s “Leila - The Star ofMingrelia “ (1931). She had no inhibitions on screen andinvested her love sequences with ebullient energy, abandonand long lingering passionate kisses. She was fairly activeeven after movies began to talk Tamil and played the lead rolein “Dewan Bahadur” (1943). Sadly, her later years were spentin oblivion and she died some years ago in want and misery, forgotten by the world she had entertained and titillatedduring her youthful energy-rich years.

Besides dances on the stage, there were also other featureslike wrestling bouts and boxing interludes during the screen-ing of silent movies. Obviously all these were the result of theimpact of the American vaudeville. Indeed the Gaiety Cinemain Madras had handbills printed in Tamil and circulatedadvertising “Vaudeville Shows - An Additional Attraction”both in English and Tamil!. In the Tamil handbill, the worldwas written as ‘Vaadi Villi! (A case of ‘Semmozhi Aangilam’?’)

One of the early musical movies made in 1933 was “ValliThirumanam” bankrolled by the Coimbatore-based earlymovie pioneer Samikannu Vincent and produced by him inCalcutta in association with Pioneer Films Limited of thatcity.

Lord Muruga, son of Lord Shiva, promises one of hisdevotees that he would marry her in her next birth. She isborn on earth and a tribal chief finds the abandoned infantwhom he names Valli and brings up as his daughter. True tohis promise, Muruga comes down to earth to woo her and, after many interesting events, he weds her.

This tale was filmed more than once as a silent film, and thefirst sound version was produced in 1933. Later, there weretwo more versions, one in 1945, “Sri Valli” , by AV. Meiyappanwhich was a major box office hit. In recent decades, anotherwas made in colour with Sivaji Ganesan playing Muruga withPadmini as Valli. In spite of these top stars, colour and more, this film proved a major flop!

The 1930s was the period when the Indian Freedom Move-ment was in a fast forward mode and the British Indian filmcensorship code was very rigid. Anything - songs, dialogues orvisuals -.that even distantly or obliquely depicted an anti-British stance or pro-Indian Freedom Movement, cleverlyintroduced by smart filmmakers, were ruthlessly deleted bythe censors.

(Censorship was very rigid in that period, especially aboutthe Freedom Movement. In a mythological movie aboutVidhura, the youngest brother of King Dritharashtra andPandu, his role was played by a Bombay-based actor. He wasemaciatedly thin and totally bald, and was dressed likeMahatma Gandhi. The film was titled “Mahatma Vidhur”and hence the censors branded it as anti-British and pro-Freedom Movement and promptly banned it!)

“Valli Thirumanam” too had songs propagating the Free-dom Movement. Valli (T. P. Rajalakshmi) is in her father’sfields to protect the crops from invading birds. On such duty, she sings the song “Vetkamketta vellai kokkugalaa, virattiadiththaalum vaareegalaa”. (‘Shameless white storks, whydo you come back even after being chased out!’) The obliquereference was to the white man, using the white storks as ametaphor. In many cinema houses, many moviegoers loudlycheered when these lines came on screen.

Another song was sung by Muruga who comes to meet Vallidisguised as a bangle seller, and it had the opening lines“Valaiyal vaangalaiyo… ammammaa... valaiyalvaangalaiyo… oru maasillaadha Hindu Swadheshi valaiyalvaangalaiyo” (Bangles, buy…madam, bangles….pure In-dian Swadheshi bangles…!’), in which he makes reference tothe then patriotic movement ‘Swadheshi Goods’ asking peopleto boycott foreign goods and buy only Indian goods!

Lord Muruga singing lines about the Indian FreedomMovement? Anachronism? Maybe according to the rules ofdramaturgy, but nobody then bothered about such things.Only the spirit of the Fight for Freedom mattered!

TOURS &TRAVELS

“All work and no play makes the Gowda gang dull boys”, says anaphorism, rebelling against which Sadananda Gowda’s triumvi-rate of ministers went viral and imported for the nonce, throughtheir cellphones, real flesh and blood entertainment during theassembly session, the first known entertainment since Adam andEve gamboled in their lascivious innocence in the garden of Eden!

The trio could have snored their way through the boring session, but chose to be true to their daily allowance by marking theirpresence in the assembly and imbibing the pleasures of sight, sound and sex aplenty supplied by 2G Spectrum for the benefit ofmankind.

Let us laud the three musketeers with “Hip, hip, hurray”, oneeach, and hope that other law-making bodies would supply porn-laden cell phones to their suffering legislators to fight somnolencewhile the boring drivel is on in the house.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to replicate the assuaging touch todemolish boredom in court halls too, where lawyers suffer fromothers’ word-diarrhoea held forth for hours on what usually meritsa mere five-minute argument. General Singh versus MinisterAnthony is the classic illustration which took 4+ hours to arguethat it was 1950, and not 1951, that was the birth year of theformer. People outside the Court could have heard the racket insidefor hours and the waiting lawyers probably wore ear plugs all thewhile. A sneak peek at a cell- phone porn-clip would have lessenedthe ennui of the other lawyers awaiting their turn to get justice .

“You have drifted 3000 miles away from Vidhan Saudha to theSupreme Court to stress your point that people foul up the air bytoo much orality and not much morality, right?”, Sanjay Pinto ofHindu TV, who has assumed the new role of a lawyer, asked me.

“On the dot, Sanjay. Be a lawyer first and always, but not anadvocate who is the mouthpiece of the bloke who pays you!”

Asserting that Chennaimust give up building flyoversin favour of large investmentsin dedicated bus lanes, bicycletracks and pedestrian walk-ways, Janette Sadik-Khan(New York Transport Commis-sioner) has said that “Invest-ments made by city adminis-trations must improve thequality of life of residents”.

“The strategy of making itas easy as possible for cars togo as fast as possible has out-lived its usefulness. Prioritisingpublic transport is going to bethe hallmark of a great city inthe 21st century. And Chennaihas a real chance to leapfrogpast the mistakes that west-ern cities committed,” she de-clared.

Following a series of meet-ings with Tamilnadu Govern-

“T. Nagar can do a Times Square”, says New York expert“T. Nagar can do a Times Square”, says New York expert

Amanda Burden (left) and Janette Sadik Khanment officials, Janette saidthat Chennai must also seri-ously consider implementinga Bus Rapid Transit System.“A priority bus lane is the markof effective cities. Buses move

more people, so they should getmore priority than single per-sons driving by themselves. Itis very important and it can bedone quickly and inexpen-sively.”

Sharing New York’s experi-ence, which until 2007 recordedthe lowest public transit busspeeds in the United States, she said that introducing aSelect Bus Service that oper-ated on a dedicated lane hasgiven ‘great returns”.

“The dedicated bus lane hasincreased ridership by 30% andhas an approval rating of 98%among New Yorkers,” Janettesaid.

Chennai is a very excitingcity, she said. “But there aretraffic and growth challenges. It is really important for thecity to take a different view ofhow the streets are used. Wewere able to close down trafficflow into Times Square and turninto a pedestrian plaza.Chennai must do the same inareas such as T. Nagar. There

is incredible energy in thestreets here, but the city has toprotect pedestrians. A networkof bicycle tracks also needs tocome up”. In New York, oncewalkways and bicycle laneswere installed, the number ofpeople getting injured or killedin road accidents dropped byover 30%, she added.

Amanda Burden (New YorkCity Planning Commissioner),who accompanied Janette, saidthat the city must also do some-thing about the rivers that are‘polluted beyond words’. “Theyhave to be reclaimed for publicuse. In New York, we have built328 acres of waterfront parks. Now, for the first time in de-cades, New Yorkers feel it is awaterfront city. It has reallymade a difference”. Report: cour-tesy The Hindu
