NO HOLDS BARRED

In 1962, when I was a case-file carrier in the many-lawyeredoffice of the redoubtable advocate from Thanjavur, G. Ramaswamy(whose presence and presentation of the weakest of cases wrappedin personalised GR-wit raised many a quake in the deities on theBench and the alleged doyens of the Madras Bar), I had a rethinkon strategies to meet the new rural grown ammunition.

My stock in the profession, based on a 7-letter word “HONESTY”,dinned into me from my toddlership, became more concretised anda millstone round my neck which, at the end of the day, gave me themost restful sleep that not even a Taliban-mosquito could depriveme of.

Where are the valiants and the villains of the noble profession of‘Saving the people!’? My friend Chandrashekar Hegde of Udipi, whowas my classmate in Madras Presidency College, used to tell methat the worst curse that the dishonest people used to receive in thatpart  of  the  country  then  was  “May  there  be  litigation  in  yourfamily!”. The cursing saint Dhurvasa came off as a distant second.The legal Dhurvasas became the beneficiaries of the noble curse!

The Madras High Court has grown fat in its 150 years of elephan-tine intake of the Udipi syndrome and the attendant constipationbrought on by the cascades of not legal submissions but “My Lord,Melud, Melud, Melud” at the rate of 20 per any common word, whichJustice K. Chandru banned in his court. The results show thatChandru created a disposal record that is unbreakable. That wasworthy of celebratory mention by the Supreme Court, but all thespeakers failed at it in the sesquicentennial function. As friendChrist petitioned God, I repeat it, “Lord, forgive them, for they knownot what they do”.

Those of the learned profession sitting on the brink of eternityhad visions  of  Jayalalitha  granting  a  sesquicentinnial  goodbyepurse to the gowned gentry which, a friend told me, was going to bea mighty ten lakh rupees each. Having never again entered themighty premises which was overrun by stone-age people who, fortarget practice, had chosen the  intellectual giant SubramanianSwamy for the egg-ablution while he was arguing in the mighty HighCourt, I had hoped that Amma, the doer, would become a dear to theold retired brigade to which I belong.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

THE AVM STORY - 91

“Alli Arjuna”, “Ratnavali”, “Bhoo Kailas”, “Sabapathi”, “Vasan-thasena”, ”Harishchandra”, “Naam Iruvar”, “Vethala Ulagam”,“Oar Iravu”, “Parasakthi”, “Bhai Bhai” and “Sadarame”, the hits ofAVM, all had their genesis in the theater.

With such conviction it is not surprising that Meiyappan was anavid playgoer and watched plays whenever he had the time andopportunity. In the 1960’s, he found a major talent in Tamil theaterand gave his find the well-deserved break. He was a successfulplaywright with his own drama troupe which was making waves inChennai. His name was K. Balachandar, and he would later emergeas a major force in Tamil Cnema, giving it a new direction andmomentum when it was lacking in both.

Kailasam Balachandar (born 1930), a native of Thanjavur district, joined the Accountant-General’s Office in Madras after taking hisBachelor of Science degree from Annamalai University. Drawn tothe theater even in his school days, he had a flair and interest forwriting and directing plays besides acting. While working for thegovernment, he attempted to do plays in English and one ofthem was “Major Chandrakanth”. Finding that the scope forEnglish plays was limited in Madras, he rewrote the play in Tamiland it proved a sensation, especially among the educated theateraudiences of Madras. Its hero was a new character for Tamiltheater, a middle-aged, blind, retired army officer, Major Chandrakanth. An amateur stage actor, also a government servant, played the rolewith much depth and conviction, and became a stage and later screenstar. The role became so synonymous with his name that he came tobe known as ”Major” Sundararajan! With this hit, Balachandar andhis troupe won fame and found solid following among the Tamilmiddle class.

Hailing from a similar background, Balachandar knew his milieuwell and portrayed it with depth, understanding, impact andempathy. Not surprisingly, all his subsequent plays proved to be hitsand he created Indian theater history.

Tamil theater put on new colors and hues, thanks to him. Indeedhis plays were a watershed in Tamil theater history and became aturning point, witnessed decades after the historic Boys’ CompanyMovement initiated by the founding father of the Renaissance ofTamil theater, Sankaradas Swamigal. It is all the more astonishingthat when he achieved it all, Balachandar was not yet a full-time professional.

Balachandar had a talented team of actors like “Major” Sundararajan, comedy film star C. K. Nagesh and Srikanth, who too became a filmstar soon. The movie star “Sowcar ‘Janaki was also part of thetroupe. It was no wonder that film producers like Meiyappan focusedtheir telescopes on him and he wrote dialogues for films like “DeivaThaai” (1964, a MGR-starrer), and “Poojaikku Vandha Malar”(1965).

One of his biggest stage hits was ”Server Sundaram”, a melodra-matic play about a poor restaurant waiter (called ’server’ in SouthIndia) who becomes a movie star and his relationship with hismother. Nagesh played the role with great feeling, drawing from theexperiences of his own early life of struggle. Meiyappan acquired themovie rights of the play and engaged Balachandar as his writer.

“Server Sundaram” (1964), a Meiyappan production, was di-rected by Krishnan-Panju and had Nagesh in the lead, with up- and-coming multi-lingual star K. R. Vijaya, Muthuraman and S. N.Lakshmi as the hero’s mother. Balachandar’s dialogues had punchand power and attracted attention. The film was a success and alsowon the Indian Government Certificate of Merit in 1964 and theFilmfare Award. It was also dubbed in Telugu.

Later, in 1971, Meiyappan produced it in Hindi as ”Mein SundarHoon” with the Hindi comedy star Mehmood in the lead role, supported by Biswajeet and Leena Chandavarkar. Krishnan-Panjudirected the Hindi version also. (To be continued)
