G. Ramanathan composed musicfor the hit film ‘MaduraiVeeran’ (1951) which was one of the best during his long andillustrious career as Tamil movies’ music charmer.

There were as many as nine songs in this movie, most of thembecoming hits and some of them still remembered and heard byfilm music lovers, even after more than half-century-plus!

‘Madurai Veeran’ was produced by the well-known movieproduction company of the early decades, Krishna Pictures, which was promoted and controlled by SM. LetchumananChettiar, popularly known as Lena Chettiar. Because he wasan undischarged insolvent, his name did not appear in the credittitles in any of his productions, but he was the moving force andmorebehind his films.

‘Madurai Veeran’ was directed by the noted bilingualfilmmaker D. Yoganand who made several hit movies during hissuccessful career in Tamil and Telugu.

The songs in this movie were composed by G. Ramanathaninclassical Carnatic music ragas. Some of them had more thanone raga in a single song, well blended to create a fascinatingmelody. Movie songs are basically melody-based and do notalways stick to a single raga-base, and more than one raga isused to blend them and to make them more pleasant to hearfor the listener and moviegoer. There are some ragas which arepure Carnatic classicalmusic based, but can be used to give iteven a western touch.

One such raga is Karaharapriyawhich was given such awestern music touch in a song ‘I will sing for you…I will dancefor you... aattamenna solluven…!’, composed by another geniusand movie music charmer M. S.Viswanathan. (More about thissong and MSV later in the series!)

Here follows the list of the songs in ‘Madurai Veeran’ withtheragas mentioned in the write-up for each song:

1. Aadal Kaameero: This is an excellent song and its dancesequence was executed by the brilliant star dancer, actressandaward winner Padmini. This song was rendered in raga Charukesiby the famed musician and off-screen playback singer M.L.Vasanthakumari. (It was in this same raga that the celebratedsong ‘Manmadha Leelayai’ had been rendered by M. K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar in the box-office bonanza movie‘Haridas (1944)). This song was written by that masterPapanasam Sivan and tuned by him while Ramanathancomposed the background music score. However,Ramanathan’s name does not appear in the credit titles of‘Haridas’ though he has gone on record that he had in factcomposed the music for the song. As they say, success hasmany fathers while failure is always a bastard! According tosome critics, it was after this successful song that Charukesibecame popular not only for movie music, but also in classicalCarnatic music performances.)

2. ‘Naatakam Ellaam’: This song is a duet in the melodiousragaJonpuri and is sung by T. M. Soundararajan and Jikki. Thescene in which this song was featured had innovative lighting, excellent photography with some trick work, focusing onPadmini’s expressive eyes which convey many meanings!

3. ‘YecchuPizhaikkum’: This was a duet by T. M.Soundararajan and P. Leela filmed on MGR and Padmini whodance before a tribal leader (M.M.A. Chinnappa Thevar). Thissong is in the popular raga Behag and was a copy of the classicalsong, ‘Deenakaruna karunakaraney Nataraja’, rendered byMKTBhagavathar in the musical classic of 1939,‘Thiruneelakantar’ .

4. ‘Summa Irundhal’: This was sung by Leela and Jikki andwas filmed as a dance sequence with Lalitha and Ragini, whichbecame the subject matter of a copyright legal dispute betweenthe producers of ‘Madurai Veeran’ and the hit Telugu- Tamilfilm ‘Kaalam Marindi’ and ‘Kaalam Maari Pochu’. It was overthe dance number ‘Yeru Pootti Povaye’, afolk dancenumberwhich was done by a newcomer. Her name? Waheeda Rehmanwho evolved into a great character actress in Hindi movies inlater years. LETTERS TO THE EDITORTANGEDCO hounds consumer viaautomated SMS for one rupee dueSir, Tamilnadu Generation and Distribution

Corporation (TANGEDCO) recently updatedthe mobile numbers of its consumers with aview to keep them posted of the power dues. Thewell-intentioned move sometimes causes nui-sance to the consumers. A retired teacher, who stays in our apartment complex keptreceiving repeated SMS from TANGEDCO onhis mobile last week informing him that he hasan outstanding amount of Re.1 and that heshould pay the same immediately or his powersupply could get disconnected. Since he had nopending dues, he approached EB office. Theofficials found that the messages were beingdelivered to his mobile by mistake due to adatabase error. Considering the due of Re. 1, isit worth at all to send such messages even tothe correct consumer? TANGEDCO has beencollecting security deposits every two yearsbased on the consumption levels of each con-sumer. While one cannot but laugh at the waythe TANGEDCO works, incurring such waste-ful expenditure for such a piddly amount couldbe the reason for the recurring loss. For theinefficiency of the officials, the consumers aremade to pay in the forms of hike in powertariff!—V.S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street,T. Nagar

No white board bus on 12C routeSir, At present, MTC is only plying deluxe

buses on the 12C route. The ticket rates aremuch higher compared to the white board(ordinary fare) MTC buses. The service is infre-quent and hence the buses are often over-crowded. It is a popular route for a number ofstudents, office goers and senior citizens likeme who regularly visit temples en route. Whenwill the MTC and the government understandabout the difficulties of poor commuters? I urgethe authorities to increase the frequency andalso ply white board buses on the 12C route forthe benefit of the commuters. – A.Venkitachalam, 21, Abdul Aziz Street, T.Nagar

Beggars’ menace in Natesan ParkSir, I would like to bring to the notice of park

authorities some of the unpleasant happen-ings inside Dr. Natesan Park (T. Nagar). I ama senior citizen and a regular visitor to the parkfor physical and mental relaxation. Beggarsare on the rise within the park. They disturb thepark visitors. It appears to be the work of aracket as a number of these beggars alsoappear to be mentally challenged. They areuncouth and also litter the park. There has alsobeen a recent spurt of young couples datinginside the park and indulging in unsavory ac-tivities causing embarrassment to the visitorsand setting a bad example to young kids whocome to the park to play. I appeal to theauthorities to take suitable action so that thepeace and tranquility of the park and its visi-tors are maintained. – H. Nagesh Bhan-darkar, 40, Sri Krishna Apartments, 8th

Where are the PDS inspectorsand officials?

Sir, This refers to the article ‘Hazard outsideration shop on Rameswaram Road’ publishedin Mambalam Times last week under the ‘Let-ters to the Editor’ column. This is the secondtime it has been highlighted. The first reportappeared in 2013 and was also taken up withthe PDS officials then. However it is sad to notethat the same situation continues two yearsdown the line. It has actually gone from bad toworse. I too buy from the same shop and haveoften seen rats and roaches inside the shop. The shop owner in completely unmindful andturns a blind eye when we point it out to him.It is high time the sanitary inspectors or theelected representative did their job and tooksuitable action against the ration shop owner.—S. Ganesan, Rameswaram Road, WestMambalam

Appeal for non-a/c bus onT. Nagar-Kancheepuram route

Sir, MTC is plying only air-conditioned buseson route 576 from T. Nagar Bus Terminus toKancheepuram. The fares are high and beyondthe means of the common man who is forced togo to Koyambedu to board an ordinary farebus. I appeal to the MTC officials to also runordinary buses on this route. – V.S. Jayaraman,31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

No proper fire safety norms forcommercials establishments

Sir, The report “T. Nagar residents movecourt on fire safety” published in last week’sissue of Mambalam Times is an eye opener notonly for T. Nagar/Mambalam residents butalso for every resident of Chennai. There hasbeen a spurt of uncontrolled commercializa-tion and rampant construction of high risestructures in narrow streets all over Chennai. Most of these are not as per constructionsnorms and I wonder how these get sanctionfrom the concerned authorities. In any panicsituation arises, there is no way to exit from thefloor to safety. The awareness level of thepublic is low and hence there are noprotests. The Government too is blind eyed tothe situation and must strengthen the sanc-tion norms and also conduct regular inspectionof these multi level complexes.— A.Venkitachalam Iyer, Badrachalam Street,West Mambalam

Traffic menace in Thambiah Road/Brindavan Street junction

Sir, Traffic is heavy through out the day atThambiah Road-Brindavan Street junction.Vehicles clamor for space and jump signals atwill. Recently, the signals too stopped workingand are yet to be repaired. Pedestrians, espe-cially school children and senior citizens, arethe worst sufferers who struggle to cross theroads. It is a rarity to see a traffic policeman atthe junction guiding the traffic. I appeal to theconcerned authorities to take suitable actionat the earliest.— T.V.B a s h y a m ,Manickam Street,West Mambalam
