LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Need for speedbreakers Sir - I have been a resident of Baroda Street, West Mambalam for

the last 20 years. We find it extremely difficult to reach Railway BorderRoad from our street as drivers of vehicles plying on Railway BorderRoad drive fast without slowing down or halting to allow other vehiclesto enter. My vehicle was hit twice and I have seen quite a few accidentsat this junction as vehicles from Baroda Street try to enter RailwayBorder Road. The need for speedbreakers at this intersection is ex-tremely important as traffic intensity has also increased manifold.Further, this junction is close to a girls’ school. I took up the matter withCorporation officials who wanted me to go to the Police Department. As this is a request for the safety of the public, immediate attentionmust be given to this problem. While I have seen several speedbreakersinstalled in far less traffic congested areas within West Mambalam,

Dangerous trijunctionSir, I am a 77-year-old retired pilot of Indian Air Force and a qualified and

experienced flight safety officer and aircraft accident investigator. The trijunction of Thanickachalam Road, Thyagaraya Road and Malony

Road in front of Hindi Prachara Sabha is a potentially dangerous spot. There are eateries, a bakery and petty shops at Thanickalam Road turningwhere many cars, motorcycles and scooters are illegally and dangerouslyparked on both sides of Thanikchalam Road where it starts to turn towardsVenkatanarayana Road greatly reducing the available space for buses, cars, 2-wheelers etc. Those visiting tea shops on the edge of the road arean added danger. Road dividers are frequently shifted and drivers of busestaking a turn at this junction often pass close to pedestrians. At night, thereis a need for a ‘red light’ on the platform at the gate of Hindi Prachara Sabhato show that it is a junction where vehicles turn right or left.

Also, along Thanikachalam Road towards Venkatanarayana Road junc-tion in front of Spencers, a road divider starts and goes upto the end ofVenkatanarayan Road but there is no light to indicate the start of thejunction.

A bright red light is an absolute must due to heavy traffic, especially, inthe evening and night. Also, cars take the wrong side of the median andproceed towards, Venkatanarayana road junction. Policemen quite oftenpermit this to clear the traffic. Some bikes and cars are seen frequentlyspeeding towards Thanickalam Road-Venkatanaraya road junction withBurkit Road. I am amazed that serious accidents have not yet taken place.

Specific requirements are: 1. A ‘red light’ on Hindi Prachara Sabhaplatform at the trijunction to denote a dead end. 2. A ‘red light’ in front ofSpencers where the median starts and goes upto Venkatanarayana Road.3. Illegal and dangerous parking of cars/taxis, two-wheelers in front ofeateries/shops, at the turning of Thanikachalam Road, near the trijunctionshould be strictly prohibited. 4. The huge tree in the way can easily betransplanted in another suitable location. 5. A board to show RajambalStreet next to the tree at right angle to Thanikachalam Road. 6. Effective, suitable speedbreakers in front of Block “C”, Silver Park Apartments. 7.Parking of vehicles outside the Pillayar temple and adjoining gate outsideHindi Prachara Sabha must be stopped. 8. Everyday a police vehicle withred and blue lights on top is seen parked in the most dangerous spot whereThanikachalam Road turns towards Venkatanarayana road. This needs tobe rectified. – Wing Commander E.A. Murthy (Retd.), ThanikachalamRoad, T. Nagar

What a post-box!Sir - Anyone who walks through Ram Colony situated between 10th

Avenue (Ashok Nagar) and Postal Colony 1st Street in West Mambalamwill notice the pathetic condition of a post-box. There is such a big holethrough which any letter posted will slip through and touch MotherEarth immediately.

I wonder why this post-box has been kept in front of a house. Onewould expect post-boxes to be kept near public places like parks, libraries, temples, hotels, banks and educational institutions. As it iswe do not have adequate post boxes in Ashok Nagar. There was one at9th Avenue and 10th Avenue junction but it disappeared all of a sudden.

The post box on 11th Avenue is very close to a dustbin which peopleusually avoid. SMS or E-mail cannot give a soul (sole?) the satisfactionthat a letter penned by a near and dear one gives. So we appeal to theauthorities concerned to keep proper post-boxes in proper places.

We consider a postman the harbinger of happy tidings and anythingthat assists this noble job of communication is highly respected. Dr.K. R. Chidambara Kumarasamy, 40, 53rd Street, Ashok Nagar.

it surprises me why noattention has beenpaid so far to this junc-tion. I hope one depart-ment does not keeppointing to another de-partment for carryingout the work.

Further, the speed-breakers need to bepainted to be noticedfrom a fair distance. Ihave seen manyspeedbreakers in LakeView Road which arejust humps which canbe felt only when youpass over them.K r i s h n a n , W e s tMambalam

NO HOLDS BARREDFAR AWAY FIELDS

Far away fields may look greener and exert a pull to makeyou move from your hopeless porch. Show me a man whoresists the pull and I will, as my great friend SubramanianSwamy exploded on Times Now and squashed host ArnobGoswami by branding him ‘liar’ many times a few monthsago when five Indians were in Lankan death row, awaitinga swing out of life. It is good in snatches as perhaps all goodthings are.

During my school days in the High School, part of whichwas in Madras, I used to dash back to my village in Kannurand walk through the green paddy fields scrounging anunseen digital scent of the grain within. It may be becausemy core was in Kannur though the crass existence was inChennai, and the link was the faraway greenery. Now I lookin vain for the greenery since tar and concrete junglesoccupy the acres that in my youth were green with life anda peg in one’s journey in pastoral life that fed the hopes ofa youth rooted in nature and non-competitive exceptsportingly and in fine arts.

When, through multifarious activities a desired resulthappens, the human and mechanical cogs lose individual-ity and become a mould and to that extent become aprocess without any human touch, the perfect setting forthe kind of life we are forced to face and live in without athought of the far away field which is greener. A cog can onlybe colourblind if you have to survive the harsh awakening. The struggle to break out of the stranglehold created byone’s aspirations is what drives individuals into amor-phous groups called politicians, who are their own lawmakers, to find the fabulous greenery, not far away in a longtime, but now at hand. That is why there are so many ofthem with different hues and cries, the booty bags growingcavernous.

Let us get Arnob and my good friend SubramanianSwami to debate this and hope to see sparks flying, but nothurting any more. It is time spent intellectually and noisily.
