Tamil Cinema and Music - 15

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

This space costs Rs. 800 only!

Even while Dandapani Desikar enjoyed a good measure of suc-cess as a Carnatic musician, he was also involved in Tamil Cinemain which he did enjoy a fair measure of success during the 1930-1940s.

He played the lead role in six films: ‘Pattinathar’ (1935), ‘VallalaMaharaja’ (1937), ‘Thayumaanavar’(1938), ‘Maanickavaasagar’(1939), ‘Nandanaar’ (1942) and ‘Thirumazhisai Aazhvaar (1948).Out of these films, ‘Pattinathaar’ and ‘Nandanaar’ were big hitswith the Gemini Studio S. S. Vasan’s production of ‘Nandanar’ beingone of his most successful movies and remembered by one and allto this day after sixty-plus long years.

Not many are aware that Desikar sang a Tamil song off thescreen in a Kannada movie of 1935. That was ‘Samsaara Nowka’,meaning ‘Boat of Life’. It was the first Kannada movie with acontemporary theme - known as ‘social’ in Indian filmland parlance- and was based on a stage play which is considered to be one of thebiggest hits in the history of Indian Theater. Written by H. L. N.Simha, this play is believed to have been staged all over South Indiaover 4000 to 5000 times. During that period the demon of linguisticintolerance had not yet raised its ugly bare-fanged head andKannada plays were staged with success even in non-Kannadaspeaking areas of the old Madras Presidency and also Madras City.

‘Samsara Nowka’ was staged successfully at ‘Soundarya Mahal’on Govindappa Naicken Street which was once a popular venue ofentertainment in the George Town area of Madras City. Today fewremember this hall which has vanished with the passage of timeby giving way to shopping centers. Huge crowds used to attend theKannada play and many of the men and women shed copious tearswatching the play! Such was the emotional impact of the Kannadaplay of the 1930s.

Two of the ‘tear-shedders’, involved in films, were K. RajagopalChetty and his brother Nanjappa Chetty. They were so impressedand moved that they made it as a Kannada movie, written anddirected by Simha. The movie was also a major hit and createdKannada film history. The lead pair of the play and the film, B. R.Panthulu, and M. V. Rajamma, came into Tamil movies and bothbecame stars of South Indian cinema. Apart from being an actor,Panthulu made a mark as a successful multi-lingual producer-director with many hits to his credit. Rajamma enjoyed a longinnings, first as heroine, and later as a character actress excellingin ‘mother’ roles.

In the Kannada movie, the hero, fighting against the problemsof life and down in the dumps, wanders restlessly. This sequencewas shot in the well-known Paanagal Park area of T. Nagar inMadras City. As the hero wanders, Desikar sings a ‘Pattinathar’composition in Tamil in the background, which fits the mood andthe mental state of the harassed hero. In today’s situation oflinguistic intolerance it is difficult to believe that a Kannada moviecould have a song in Tamil! But those were the happy days whenpeople appreciated art irrespective of the language. Such were thecultural levels those days! Sadly all of that vanished with the birthof the linguistic States, thanks to the evil machinations of self-centered, selfish and corrupt politicians. Very sad indeed...

(The well-known landmark of T.Nagar is wrongly pronounced byone and all as ‘Panagal Park’. Indeed the correct pronunciation is‘Paanagal’ Park. It is named after one of the great politicians ofMadras, leader of the Justice Party of yester-decades, and theChief Minister of the old Madras Presidency during the 1920’s. Hewas an Andhra, Raja of Paanagal.)

Besides his knowledge of music and his inborn talent and acquiredskills, Desikar’s major asset was his melodious, fascinating voice.According to Mr. Fielden, the first boss of All India Radio in Delhi,Desikar’s voice was the only one among Carnatic musicians whichqualified according to the standards of the Western ClassicalMusic. He described all other top Carnatic musicians, includingSemmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Musiri Subramania Iyer, MaduraiMani Iyer, and even the inimitable Ariyakudi Ramanuja Ayyangaras ‘mere crooners’! According to Saint Thyagaraja Swamigal’sfamous composition ‘Sapthasawara sobillu….’, the singer’s musicmust come from the “naabhi”, namely from the pit of the stomachand not from the throat!

Badminton Club and ChennaiAmateur Astronomers haveorganized a ‘Sun observationevent’ from 2 p.m to 4 p.m onSunday, May 13 on Corpora-tion Playground, 47th Street,9th Avenue, Ashok Nagar.

Anyone can have a close lookat the hot surface of the sunusing a Coronado PersonalSolar Telescope (PST) and spotsun spots, solar prominences, filaments and view the hotsurface of Sun.

Sunspots are dark, planet-sized regions that appear onthe surface of the sun. Sun-spots are ‘dark’ because theyare colder than the areasaround them.

Solar prominences are loopsand flares of gas extending out-ward from the surface of thesun. They are bright whenbacked by dark space. When aprominence is in front of thesun’s disk they resemble darkthreads and feathers. This isbecause, while hot, they arecooler and darker than the sun’ssurface.

D. Vijayakumar (AmateurAstronomer) told MambalamTimes that the sun is earth’snearest star and is brighterthan 85% of stars in the MilkyWay. All life on earth dependson the sun and its light and
