TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Tamil Cinema and Music - 7N. C. VASANTHAKOKILAM

Kamakshi, for that was Vasanthakokilam’s given name, hailedfrom a Brahmin Iyer family of Irinjalakuda, now in Kerala, but thefamily had settled down in the port town of Negapatam (nowNagapattinam) on the Bay of Bengal.

The young girl was blessed with a melodious honeydew voice, andher father had her trained in Classical Carnatic music in Negapatam. She and her father nursed and nurtured the ambition that sheshould be a performing musical artiste and win fame and fortune.

The sadly neglected Indian film pioneer, the lawyer-turned-film-maker, K. Subramanyam, had strong links with Negapatam throughmarriage into a wealthy lawyer’s family. Ever a talent scout, he feltthat the girl had talent and could be groomed into a singing Tamil filmactress.

That was the period when onscreen performers in movies had tosing in their own voice and the now common and routine off-screen-voice-lending - ‘play-back’ - system had not yet come into vogue.

Prompted by his encouragement and promises, the father anddaughter landed in Madras where they hardly knew any soul or bodyexcept K. Subramanyam! They did not have much money either.Regretfully they could not meet Subramanyam since he was awayin Calcutta making a film. So the two were all at sea in the baysidemetropolis.

Luckily, a family friend, a young bachelor and a native ofNegapatam who had learnt music along with Kamakshi under thesame guru, was then working in the Egmore station of the thenprivately-owned South Indian Railway (SIR). He came to theirrescue and gave them refuge in his bachelor-quarters at the out-skirts of the city.

(The retired railway executive narrated the story-book like eventsof the 1930s to this writer during a rainy evening in Madras in theearly 1980s but wished to remain anonymous for obvious reasons!)

At some risk and much trouble, the Good Samaritan worked hardto promote his small town friend - by now his lover! Using hisconnections, he succeeded in getting his mate a break to sing overradio then run by the Corporation of Madras. The local stationbroadcast its programs only in the evenings. All India Radio,Madras, was yet to be born!

She sang at many other places in the city and cut discs (then called‘plates’) for His Master’s Voice (HMV). She also won prizes and goldmedals in music competitions. Critics and crowds began to takenotice of her. By now she had a new name, N. C. Vasanthakokilam!

(The Good Samaritan’s family came to know about it all andmarried him off quickly, and the relationship came to a sad end! However he kept in touch with his pal and met her now and then as‘just friends’! )

Vasanthakokilam too got married but sadly the marriage did notlast long. Ambitious and her goals clearly set, she bade her husbandgoodbye and all that, and pursued her career with devotion andtenacity. The poor man set up a modest restaurant - known as‘coffee club’ in Thanjavur district lingo and idiom - in Thiruvaiyaru, the famed small town associated with the musical savant, thelegendary Saint Thyagaraja Swamigal.

Whenever Vasanthakokilam came to that town for music con-certs during the popular Thyagaraja Aradhana festival, he wouldshut shop and vanish from that town. He did not wish to be in thesame town as she even if it was only for a day! (An understandablesentiment indeed!)

With her fame as a singer slowly but surely rippling out,Vasanthakokilam set her sights on cinema and knocked on itsdoors. By then M. S. Subbulakshmi had already come into moviesand had become a star and a cult figure. With MS making waves, could NCV be far behind? (To be continued)

By M. A. SADANANDNO HOLDS BARRED

Early men lived in caves and their sole supply of light was the goodold sun during the day. So all those chaps went to bed early andbecame healthy and wise for centuries until busybodies like Thalesand Benjamin Franklin and Fukushima, Japan’s latest producer ofsorrow, brought in artificial light to enlighten the world and maddensome chaps in Kudankulam who yearn for the safe old troglodytedays when no one had to work to live except to kill for the tasty rawflesh of animals or brethren. They shut shop with the sun and snoredaway the night without TV and sleep-breaking devices.

How lucky they were! They perhaps slept until the noon-heat wokethem up after a whole night of baby- planting. There was so muchpeace for man and horror for the animal world until a scientistMegasaur revolted and swallowed up the human race leaving just abit of chromosomes for man as a life jacket.

The brainy chaps then obliterated the granter of life and inventedFukushimas, and the kinky Kudamkulamites who want me not touse my computer when I want but must await the pleasure ofTamilnadu Electricity Board to come out with the threat of furtherreduction of enlightenment time.

How can the poor policemen hunt down bank robbers like thequintet gang if raids cannot be conducted at night when the whole cityis a desert of darkness and a haven for criminals! Daytime work forordinary lazy heads consists of gulping endless cups of energising teain canteens and talking politics and shop. If the 10 to 5 work is prunedbecause of the Kudankulam heroes, we don’t need Pakistan or Chinaas our dear villains. We can be proud of our self reliance and auto-destructive mechanism.

Candle stick making industry will get a boost and Amma’s gener-ous gift of laptops to students will fire the imagination of some futureSteve Job into inventing a life sustaining thingammy which willmake nuclear devices look dead as a dodo. Anthony and Amma, areyou listening?
