Lakshman Street first to be relaid withplastic-mixed bitumen

The work was launched onLakshmanan Street in T.Nagar by Mayor Saidai S.Duraisamy and R. Vasudevan(Dean and Head of the Chem-istry Department, ThiagarajarCollege of Engineering,Madurai), who invented thetechnique and holds a patentfor it.

Duraisamy announced thatall roads in the city will haveplastic content in future. Atotal of 1,616 roads to be re-laid in 2011-2012 in the citywill have 10 per cent plasticcontent in addition to bitumen,he added.

The initiative to re-lay roadswith plastic in the city followsa gazette notification by the

Mayor Duraisamy and Vasudevan (extreme right) addingshredded plastic waste to blue metal at the launch of

relaying on Lakshman Street.Ministry of Environment andForests in February 4, 2011.

Plastic waste generation inthe Corporation limits is at therate of 9% of 3,711 tonnes ofgarbage a day. This amountsto 334 tonnes per day whichcan be used for re-laying ofroads if all the residents co-operate with the civic body byleaving their plastic waste incollection bins.

The civic body has put inplace bins in every ward office.The plastic will be shredded toa size of 2-3 mm using a scrapgrinder before use in road re-laying, according to Vasude-van. The bitumen mix, afteraddition of plastic, will have atemperature of 140 degreesCelsius before the paver ma-chine is operated.

The quality and strength ofthe road increases manifoldafter mixing plastics and pot-

holes formation can be pre-vented, he added.
