MSc Management, Organisations and Governance 0706 MSc Management, Organisations and Governance

How does the programme contribute to the LSE’s core philosophy, ‘understanding the causes of things’?

I see our programme as a great example of the LSE’s core philosophy. It is in understanding the most fundamental meaning of our most theoretical concepts that insights for the most practical problems of our times arise. By understanding the causes of things, we can design effective solutions to current limitations. That is precisely the combination that we aim for in the MOG programme.

How does this programme differ fundamentally from other similar degrees, such as an MBA?

The MOG has a clear view towards understanding organisations of different types. This is not a degree focused on mainstream management alone, as our Master’s in Management programme would offer, but rather a degree looking at market-leading firms, newly born enterprises, non-profit organisations and public agencies. For this purpose, the MOG programme includes a core curriculum that combines mainstream management with enterprise development, along a strong emphasis on innovation. In the end, the programme allows students to build a personal view on the drivers of success for organisations of different types, whether that is the pursuit of maximum profits or of highest public awareness. A view of that entire panorama allows students to tailor their careers towards the interaction of these diverse organisations differently from the way a specialisation in mainstream management would. The interactions of different organisational forms require significant creativity and thus, innovation is a distinctive feature in the MOG programme.

What would you say to a prospective student thinking of applying to join the programme next year?

If you are interested in understanding the dynamics of organisations of different shapes and forms, profit or non-profit, established or newly formed, private industry or public agencies, and are keen on innovation in organising, this is the programme for you. You will receive a strong foundation in management, innovation and enterprise development. You will also enjoy freedom to tailor your curriculum through our elective portfolio. Through the combination of strong foundations and open-ended choice we aim to help you make the most of your year at the LSE and help you seize it as a stepping stone in a long-lasting career that will help us improve our society and economy together.

What are the core learnings your students will take away from the programme?

The Management, Organistations and Governance (MOG) programme prepares students for leadership positions in the management and consulting of all types of organisations, including not only profit-making established firms and start-ups, but also non-profit organisations, dual-objective organisations (such as social enterprises) and public agencies. By extension, our graduates are also well prepared for managing and advising roles in the rising number of intersections of these organisational forms, including partnerships between profit and non-profit organisations and alliances between established and newly formed firms, to name a few. It is with this purpose that we include innovation in the core curriculum of the programme, to promote creativity in new ways of organising. Our aim is to immerse students in understanding the dynamics of organisations of different types so that they will envision how to shape each of them and their interactions in our global economy and society.

What is your strategic vision for the programme, and where do you see it in the next 5 years?

The key differentiator of an education at the LSE is the combination of a deep understanding of both the theoretical foundations of the latest knowledge and their practical implications for our global economy and society. I see our programme evolving along with the advance of our theories of organisations and the socioeconomic trends involving organisations of different types. For this purpose, we will continue to strengthen our connection to the most rigorous academic research and enhance our involvement with active organisations.

What attracted me initially to MSc Management, Organisations and Governance at the LSE is the unique combination of an immaculate academic programme, world-class teaching quality and an impressive alumni network. From a pragmatic perspective, the programme presents not only a chance for a head start in a consultancy career but it could pave the way to future research work in the field of management.

While I had certain expectations related to the rigorous schedule, intellectually stimulating readings and the opportunity to meet inspirational people from a variety of professional and academic backgrounds, the LSE experience has definitely exceeded my expectations. With the amazing experience of attending talks delivered by world-renowned guest lecturers, selecting to sign up for societies out of 220+ choices, being at the academic hub of cutting edge research and meeting exceptional people from more than 20 nationalities, I couldn’t have made a better choice regarding where to do my Master’s degree.

Just seven weeks into Michaelmas Term, I am already a student representative for my course, I do pro-bono consulting for a charity as a consultant at the LSE student-run Cognoscere Consulting, I participate in Widening Participation projects as a Student Ambassador and I am more than happy to attend most of the daily occurring career-related networking events.

The LSE has proved to be much more than a superb academic experience, since it offers the environment, the people and the perfect location for a year of immense personal growth and brand new perspectives on one’s own capabilities and options.

I selected the LSE because I wanted to strengthen my skills, deepen my knowledge and gain experience at an institution that has proven itself as one of the world’s most renowned universities.

Studying within an internationally diverse environment together with the best students, and learning from academics that are world leaders in their fields is not only stimulating, but inspiring for me as an individual. The LSE boasts a great network of high profile people from various industries all over the world. I believe a degree from the LSE does not only open doors; it also furnishes me with the important contacts, access and opportunities to networks I would not be able to attain anywhere else.

The management programmes at the LSE are absolutely fantastic because of the number of electives on offer in fields ranging from Accounting, Human Resource Management, Innovation to Marketing give everyone the opportunity to tailor their programme exactly to their needs and interests. I selected the MSc Management, Organisations and Governance programme because of its integrative approach to different social science disciplines which improves my understanding of how organisations operate at a micro and macro level in a social, environmental and political context. This knowledge plus the ability to apply principles and techniques that I study in a very entrepreneurial course such as Enterprise Development give me the cutting edge to turn ideas into a venture with the necessary theoretical grounding.

Last but not least, the LSE attracts many famous and interesting guest speakers that are stimulating for our professional career path. I regularly attend these events and as an active person, I also joined five out of more than 200 societies and sport clubs. In a nutshell, my LSE experience is very enriching and helps me to grow on a personal and professional level.

Outlook

Your careerYou will accelerate and transform your career with the MSc Management, Organisations and Governance. Our graduates quickly and confidently secure senior management roles with top global firms and organisations. The entrepreneurial aspect of the programme also means many go on to set up their own successful businesses. 85% of our students are in work/further study after six months, with a median salary of £45,000*.
