Michael A. Chirco was born in Detroit, Michigan to Italian immigrants Joseph and Eva Chirco, who moved from Sicily Italy in 1936 to Detroit, Michigan. It was from them that he received pride in his Italian ances-try and has returned many times to Italy to visit with friends and relatives.Growing up in the City of Detroit, he attended high school and worked in his fa-

ther’s fish mar-ket. In 1965, he was drafted and served two years in the United States Army. His honor-able discharge coincided with 1967 Detroit riots that destroyed his father’s fish market. Out of that loss, the begin-ning of his construction empire began. In 1968, he sold his first home and in

four short years in 1972, he formed his first company, MJC Homes Inc, which is still in business today. For 2016, Builder magazine ranked MJC Companies® as one of America’s Top 200 Biggest Builders. With $74 million in gross revenue, MJC Companies® was one of only two companies in southeastern Michigan to make the list. Over the last 50 years, he has built a

vast enterprise in the real estate market through a realty company, commercial building and leasing, resi-dential building, apartment building, and real estate de-velopment; which accounts for over 9,000 sold homes with approximate total sales of over $1.25 billion. In 2005, he was recognized as the nation’s 5th largest condominium builder.His cornerstone belief in providing quality con-struction at a fair price has brought success and recog-nition in the building indus-try. Yet beyond his success, is his integrity which was proven in the most recent recession when he person-ally carried the financial weight of his employees for over six (6) years knowing if he let them go then most would be financially devas-tated with no opportunities of employment. Together with the Council of Presidents, COMITES, the Consul of Italy, the IACS is ex-tremely proud to host Festa Della Repubbli-ca at the Center on June 3rd. We invite everyone to attend. The principal speak-er is Mr. Michael Chirco, and the young special guest is Marina Maniaci.

In keeping with the Festa Della Repubblica fes-tivities, the 5th annual Bocce Tournament takes place on Saturday, June 2 at the Ital-ian American Cultural Center. Italian clubs and associations are invited to partic-ipate.

MARINA MANIACI FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICA CELEBRATION SPECIAL YOUNG GUESTHello, my name is Marina Maniaci. I am the daughter of Giovanni and Rosanna Maniaci and granddaughter of Anna Marie and cur-rent president of the IACS, Giovanni LoIacono. I am 16 years old and a Junior at Dakota High School. Currently, I am enrolled in the Medical Academy at my school, and I hope to persue a career in the medical field in the near future.

I am involved in a few clubs at school that I believe will help open more doors to opportunities. I am an active member in National Honors Society, where I serve the community by providing my time and efforts through community service. Another club I got to be a part of this school year is HOSA, which stands for Health Occupational Students of America. HOSA is a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recogni-tion exclusively for students enrolled in health science education and biomedical science programs or have interests in pursuing careers in health professions. In addition, I am also a part of student leadership class, where I learn leadership skills and organize and work school functions, such as homecoming and pep assemblies.

While balancing school and a social life, most of my weekends are spent at the IACS, where I work as a server. I enjoy working at the IACS, and I work under the best management I could ask for and all my coworkers are like a second family to me. Us coworkers get together often and hang out, whether it be attending each other’s birthday par-

ties, or we’re having a work whirly ball party.

I am very proud of my Italian Heritage. My father grew up in Palermo, and my mother’s family is from Mazara. This summer, I am getting the wonderful opportunity to travel to Italy for the first time with my family to see my heritage and culture. My grandpa and my parents are very committed members of the IACS board. My father is currently the president of a club he started in memo-ry of his best friend called

Gioventú. Gioventú put on a number of events here such as Festa Dei Bambi-ni, Ridi Che Ti Passa, Sasa Salvaggio, and many other events. The goal of Gioventú is to get younger families to become more involved with the Italian community. He and I both would like to keep the Italian heritage alive because us younger people are the future of our culture.

I hope to set a good exam-ple for the future genera-tions to come.

CONNIE MILLER RECEIVES "OUTSTANDING SENIOR AWARD"

Connie Miller was the recipient of the Out-standing Senior Award at the April 4th IACS Senior meeting. She was nominated by her fellow Society members and acknowledged by the Se-niors Board of Directors for her contributions to IACS Senior membership.

She has been a member for over 20 years and goes back to the days when our club was located in Warren. For over five years, Connie was the Sunshine Lady at the Warren Center.

Her accomplishments include volunteering at St. John's Hospital, the St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade, and Wom-en’s' Civic League.

Connie was recognized for her valuable, long-time achievements on our Hospitality Committee. A few of the members' comments on their nomi-

Mary Antonia Peraino, beloved wife of the late Frank, passed away on March 6th at the age of 98 years old. Loving moth-er of the late Norman (Arlene). Proud grandma of Gina Peraino Krantz

(Kevin), Ann Peraino Wixson (Thomas), Norm Peraino (Kristen) and great grandchildren Josh-ua and Michael Wixson, Kevin and Katie Krantz, Lauren, Christopher, and Grace Peraino. Dear sister of Frances Baldo Cattol-ica and the late Emanual Cattolica, Nina Galieote. Daughter of the late Luigi and Frances Cattolica. Also survived by many loving nieces and neph-ews.

Mary belonged to St. Malachy Catholic Church, Sterling Heights, and St. Peter Catholic Church, Harper Woods.

She was involved with the St. Malachy fair and Ve-gas tent and was a mem-ber of Notre Dame Wom-en’s Club, J.L. Hudson employee, and a member of Polish Century Club. As a time-honored mem-ber of the Italian Amer-ican Cultural Society, over 30 years, Mary was an active volunteer at the old Center in Warren and

at the current facility in Clinton Township. She chaired and participated in a number of fundrais-ing events, and for a vast number of years, she car-ried out the official duties of the senior membership Sunshine Lady. Mary was recognized for her good deeds and delighted to be chosen Senior Columbus Day Queen. She loved to

play bingo, bowl, and play cards.

IACS Italian Education Scholarship ProgramPromoting Italian Language & Culture

The Italian American Cultural Society is offering a wonderful opportunity to high school students to obtain two semesters of Italian language at the Italian American Cultural Center in Clinton Township, Michigan.

Award Information:

Scholarships Awarded: Five IACS scholarships consisting of two semesters of Italian education at the Italian American Cultural Center (September – April). The winners of scholarships will receive a Certificate towards continuing the Italian education classes at the Italian American Cultural Center and a letter of recommendation for college.

Application Deadline: May 15, 2018- All scholarship applications will be reviewed by the Italian American Cultural Society. Winners will be announced at the IACS General Membership meeting in July 2018.

Requirements: Applicant must submit an essay – “Why I would like to study Italian”; a letter including biographical sketch; reason for wanting the award, and a photo in color or black and white.

Eligibility: Applicant must be entering 9th grade as of fall 2018 – 12th grade.

Classes will be held every Saturday beginning September 2018 until the end of April 2019.

Children’s Classes: The First Class Begins on Saturday, September 29, 2018. There is an additional $10 late fee for each child, if registration is after Monday, September 17, 2018. Cancellation Policy: $25 of registration fee is non-refundable after first class.

Italian American Cultural Society Italian Language Classes Fall 2018 Enrollment Form

Whether you are looking to study Italian for professional, personal, or recreational purposes, the IACS offers Italian language classes for people of all ages and levels of proficiency. Learn how to read,

write, and speak Italian in a fun and interactive learning environment! Classes are taught by native-speaking Italian teachers with teaching degrees. We offer two 15 week semesters a year,

beginning in September and January. Weeknight Adult Classes: Weeknight adult Italian classes are for 15 weeks. Fall Semester will begin the Week of September 10th, 2018 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

“TOSCA IN DEPTH” AT THE IACS On March 27, the IACS was proud to present “Tosca in Depth: A Gripping Tale of Intrigue, Jealousy, Politics and Passion!” The program was presented by the Mich-igan Opera Theatre in con-junction with its production of Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca at the Detroit Opera House April 7 through 15. Mr. John Zaretti, President of the Verdi Opera Theatre of Michigan, gave an overview of the opera that was both informative and entertain-ing. The opera was based on Victorien Sardou's 1887 French-language dramatic play, La Tosca, which was written for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt. It took Verdi four years to convert the play into an

opera, reducing it from five acts to three. Tosca pre-miered in Rome in 1900

Maestro Richard Leech, Director of Resident Artist Programs for the MOT, welcomed the audience and conveyed greetings from Dr. David DiChiera. Tenor Errin Brooks and soprano Leslie Mason performed some beautiful arias from Tosca, including Recondita Armonia, Vissi d’arte, and E lucevan le stelle. They were accompanied by Tessa Hartle, principal coach accompanist of the MOT Studio Artists.

The IACS is grateful to the MOT and John Zaretti for this wonderful evening.

For the 5th year and as part of the festivities of the Festa della Repubblica, your Club is invited to participate in the Bocce Tournament on Saturday June 2, 2018 at the Italian Cultural Society Banquet & Conference Center.

1) Every Participating club with at least one team composed of 4 men or 4 women or mixed. Minimum 2 Games played.

2) The deadline to register is May 28, 2018. The fee, registered players form, and waiver of liabilities must be sent in or dropped off by this date. Unpaid teams are disqualified.

3) The games will start on Saturday, June 2, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. 4) Weather is a factor. We will not play if it rains, and the

schedule will be revised. 5) The schedule promises a round robin game of 12 points or less

depending on number of teams. Teams placed in Brackets. 6) Each player must be a member of the club, which sponsor he

team. (Must have authentication) 7) Team requested to meet at the IACS Bocce Courts at 8:30

a.m. for a meeting. There is a trophy for the winners. 8) Food and drinks are available to Everyone.

The Federazione Siciliana del Michigan is putting together a Memorial Mass for everyone in the Italian-American Community. This mass will be a special mass in which loved one’s names will be read out loud during the mass.

Da qualche giorno, Fabrizio Frizzi è venuto a mancare. La sua morte ha fatto piangere migliaia di persone tra vip e gente comune che lo apprez-zava e lo amava. Ogni giorno, il conduttore raccoglieva migliaia di te-lespettatori con L’Eredità che, ad oggi, risulta il game show preserale più longevo della televisi-one italiana, nonchè il più seguito superando la concorrenza di Gerry Scotti e Paolo Bonolis. Questi ultimi due, però, oltre ad essere stati grandi rivali televisivi di Frizzi, lo hanno sempre onorato e rispettato e sono stati regolarmente presenti nel funerale del conduttore svoltosi il 28 marzo.

Dopo la sua morte, sono emerse delle verità riguardo il vero stato di salute di Fabrizio Frizzi. L’ischemia che lo ha col-pito ad ottobre, in realtà, era un piccolo segno di

qualcosa di più grande e serio che però il condut-tore non ha mai voluto svelare. A confermarlo, gli stessi amici vip che gli sono stati vicino come Carlo Conti, Antonella Clerici e Massimo Giletti che, nonostante il pas-saggio a La7, non ha mai dimenticato il suo col-lega dedicandogli il suo monologo iniziale nella prima puntata di Non è l’arena.

Fabrizio Frizzi è morto la notte di domenica 25 marzo per emorragia cerebrale nell’ospedale Sant’Andrea di Roma. Il conduttore de L’Eredità era stato colpito da isch-emia nel mese di ottobre ma una volta ripresosi è tornato alla guida del quiz a dicembre. Nonostante

Un nostro ex socio del centro...una visita di dovere!

Anni sono trascorsi quando Arrigo parteci-pava assiduo a tutte le nostre attivita’ al vecchio centro di Warren.

Infatti, fu anche un pro-motore dei due incontri culturali Abruzzo & Molise fatti negli anni 80.

Anni fa ancora veniva spesso ai nostri Festivali, sia Fredom Hills che al nuovo centro, alla festa della republica, poi di colpo non si vedeva piu’.

E si, il motivo c’era di non farsi piu vedere.

Un uomo di eta’, novant-acinque oggi, ritiratosi in una Casa di Riposo in Romeo Michigan, anche per stare piu vicino alla sua famiglia.

Giorni fa, mia moglie ed io, decidemmo di farli

una visita, come ci ha visti I suoi occhi si sono spalancati con parole di gratidutine.

Certo che le sue storie sono vere, come quel-la dell’ultima guerra fu prigioniero in Russia. Da Centocinquantamila pri-gioniei pochi sono ritor-nati in patria, Lui ringra-zia sempre al Signore per questo.

Emigrare era di con-suetudine quei giorni, la Republica, purtoppo, nuova in comando di un popolo sbaragliato, senza lavoro e pressati a portare famiglie avanti, si scelse di emigrare, cosi lascian-do famiglie ed amici per trovare fortuna...

Sento l’onore ed il piacere di complimentarmi con quest’ ottimo gruppo che opera in perfetta armonia! Un riferimento particolare va rivolto al Presidente Natale Palaz-zolo ed al Chairman della Festa, Giovanni Orlando che con un gruppo di volenterosi collabora-tori svolgono un lavoro fenomenale.

E’ stata una bellissima giornata, quella di do-menica 18 marzo iniziata alla Holy Family Church. Padre Giuseppe Licciardi ha celebrato una bellissi-ma Santa Messa rivolta a San Giuseppe, protettore del’ Associazione, sequita dalla distribuzione a tutti i presenti del Pane Bened-etto da Padre Pino, come da tradizione. La prima parte della giornata si e’ conclusa con un rinfresco offerto nei locali sottos-tanti alla parrocchia.

Segnatevi questa data: 4 maggio 2018. Per la prima volta nella storia, un grande giro partirà fuori dai confini del Vecchio Continente. Si tratta della 13ª partenza dall’estero. La Corsa Rosa – in pro-gramma fino al 27 mag-gio e organizzata da Rcs Sport e La Gazzetta dello Sport – scatterà con una cronometro individuale da Gerusalemme e propor-rà tre tappe sul territorio israeliano, nel ricordo di Gino Bartali, il cui nome è impresso sul muro d’onore del Giardino dei Giusti nel Mausoleo della Memoria Yad Vashem a Gerusa-lemme.

LA PARTENZA — Si

comincia venerdì 4 mag-gio con una prova contro il tempo individuale a Gerusalemme di 10,1 km. Percorso molto articolato all’interno dell’abitato, con l’arrivo a ridosso delle mura della città storica. Si affrontano in sequenza numerose svolte tra vie cittadine in un susseguirsi di saliscendi che costeg-gerà alcuni luoghi simbolo come il Parlamento (Knes-set) e le mura storiche. Finale tutto in salita da leggera a impegnativa.

IL PERCORSO — Sabato 5 maggio la prima frazi-one in linea che porterà il gruppo da Haifa a Tel Aviv dopo 167 km. Dopo la partenza si affrontano le uniche asperità di giornata con i saliscendi attorno ad Acri e in particolare con il GPM di Zikron Yakov. Nella seconda parte l’altimetria della corsa si addolcisce notevolmente fino a diventare sostan-

zialmente piatta su strade ampie man mano che ci si avvicina all’arrivo. Gli ultimi chilometri sono in parte all’interno dell’abi-tato di Tel Aviv con arrivo sul rettilineo del lungo-mare.

L’ARRIVO — Ultima tappa in terra israeliana di 226 km, in programma la domenica, da Be’er Sheva a Eilat sul Mar Rosso. Tappa interamente allineata in direzione sud. Dopo la partenza si affrontano le uniche asperità che por-tano al deserto del Negev e poi ancora sulle rive del Mar Rosso. Nello specifico, si attraversa tutto l’abitato di Mitzpe Ramon e poi ci si addentra in una lunga discesa che conduce fino all’arrivo di Eilat.

Nell’ultimo giorno della settimana della moda di Milano anche il Giro d’Italia ha presentato la sua collezione con le nuove maglie 2018 e la Madrina.

Presso la prestigiosa loca-tion di Gessi Milano, nel pieno centro della città, hanno sfilato le casacche che i leader della Cor-sa Rosa indosseranno durante la manifestazione in programma dal 4 al 27 maggio prossimo.

Alice Rachele Arlanch, Miss Italia 2017, sarà la Madrina del Giro 2018 e nell’occasione è stata anche la presentatrice del vernissage insieme al giornalista de La Gazzetta dello Sport, Nino Morici. Il countdown dell’evento è stato scandito da TAG Heuer, Official Time-keeper del Giro d’Italia.

INTRODUZIONE

“Per il palermitano la pasta non è un cibo qualsiasi, ma stabilisce un’importante lin-ea di confine tra chi vive per mangiare e chi mangia per vivere. Cioè tra i palermi-tani e il resto del mondo.”

Gli anelletti, tipico formato di pasta siciliana, sono i protagonisti principali del piatto che descriverò. Ques-to trionfo barocco di pasta al forno, o “timballo di anel-letti”, altrimenti conosciuto come “pasta col forno”, è parte integrante della tradizione gastronomica palermitana ed è legato alla sua storia. I primi timballi palermitani furono elabora-ti nel IX secolo, durante la dominazione araba, per poi diffondersi in diverse forme in tutta l’isola.

Importanza fondamentale per i siciliani è la facilità di trasporto, poiché spesso il timballo assume il ruolo

da protagonista principale in un picnic fuori porta o, a seconda della stagione, nelle ricche tavole delle feste trascorse in famiglia. La ricetta tradizionale di ques-to trionfale piatto unico è multiforme e può contenere tra i più svariati ingredienti: dal ragù di carne ai piselli, dall’uovo sodo al salame, dal primosale al prosciutto, e via elencando.

La ricetta che vi propongo è una versione “vegetarian-izzata” per i non carnivori, di gran lunga più “leggera” e “digeribile” di tutte le altre versioni dell’intera galassia sicula.

PROCEDIMENTO

In una capiente pentola dai bordi alti verserete dell’olio, aggiungerete la cipolla tritata e farete soffriggere. Non appena si sarà dora-ta aggiungerete la salsa di pomodoro, il sale, il pepe e lascerete cuocere a fuoco

basso per almeno mezz’ora. Il sugo dovrà risultare nè troppo denso, nè troppo liquido.

Nel frattempo avrete tagli-ato la melanzana a cubetti. La friggerete in una padella con sufficiente olio extra-vergine d’oliva. In una pen-tola porterete a ebollizione l’acqua per la pasta, verser-ete gli anelletti e attenderete il tempo di cottura (13 minuti circa).

Mentre la pasta sarà in cottura, avrete tagliato a cubetti i 2/3 del cacioca-vallo. Scolerete la pasta al dente e condirete con il sugo, le melanzane fritte e il caciocavallo a cubetti, quindi spolverizzerete con il restante caciocavallo grattugiato. Ungerete quindi con un po’ d’olio un recip-iente in ceramica da forno, lo spolverizzerete con del pangrattato, lo riempirete con gli anelletti conditi e con un’ulteriore spolverata di pangrattato, quindi fini-rete la cottura gratinando in forno preriscaldato a 180° per circa 20 minuti.

dunque, è iniziato il triste calvario di Frizzi verso la morte. Un calvario che, come detto dallo stesso Signorini, il conduttore ha preferito affrontare assieme al suo pubblico ritornando alla guida del quiz di Rai 1, piuttosto che rimanere a casa fino al resto dei suoi giorni. Fabrizio Frizzi, dunque, pur sapendo che non ce l’avrebbe fatta, salvo qualche miracolo che, purtroppo, non è avvenu-to, ha preferito affrontare questa battaglia con il suo ‘marchio di fabbrica’, ossia il sorriso che mostrava in ogni sua apparizione televisiva.

Patty Pravo la ribelle compie 70 anniDiva della musica, in costante sfida con se

stessa e col mondo

A 70 anni Patty Pravo non smette di essere se st-essa: libera, unica, eccen-trica, volitiva, provocante e provocatoria. Nelle sue mille incarnazioni la costante è stata la liberta espressiva, alla quale non ha mai derogato. Dalle calli veneziana fugge giovanissima a Londra, ma è poi Roma ad ac-cogliere le sue inquietu-dini, le sue trasgressioni, i suoi primi successi. Debutta in un celebre locale romano, e rimarrà sempre per tutti “la ragaz-za del Piper”, capigliatura biondo platino e stivaloni di vernice nera sopra il ginocchio, che cantava “Ragazzo triste” (il suo primo singolo, inciso nel 1966). Dal Piper al successo internazionale il passo è breve: con “La Bambola” (1968) fa il giro del mondo.

Arrivano poi gli anni 70, quelli delle trasgressione: riesce a cantare con ele-ganza innata di rapporti a tre in “Pensiero stupen-do” e di sogni proibiti in “Pazza Idea”, si esibisce vestita solo di una giacca

che non nasconde il seno nudo in “Stryx”, tras-missione d’avanguardia ideata da Enzo Trapani per la prima serata di Rai 2, posa in nudo integrale per “Le Ore”, la più cele-bre rivista hard italiana di sempre. Ma finisce anche in carcere per possesso di hashish. Una vita vissuta intensamente, in costante sfida con se stessa e con il mondo che la circonda.

In oltre 50 anni di carri-era ha venduto 110 mil-ioni di dischi, ha vissuto in tutto il mondo, cantato in otto lingue e parte-cipato a nove festival di Sanremo. Con Sanremo il rapporto è ambiguo: non lo ha mai vinto ma tutti si ricordano la sua discesa dalla scalinata in versione bamboletta cinese nel 1984, così come è rimasto uno dei brani simbolo (per lei e per il Festival) “E dimmi che non vuoi morire”, che nel 1997 Gaetano Curreri e Vasco Rossi le cucirono addosso con quella frase che rac-chiude tutto, “la cambio io la vita che non ce la fa a cambiare me”. Nel 1990

si permise persino di rinunciare pochi giorni prima di salire sul palco quando, accortasi della somiglianza del pezzo con uno di Sting, riven-dicò orgogliosa “io certe stronzate non le faccio” (e il brano venne ereditato da Anna Oxa).

Ha conquistato premi e riconoscimenti, sbanca-to in Cina, amato molti uomini, sposandone cinque (Gordon Faggetter nel 1968, Franco Baldieri nel ‘72, Paul Jeffery nel ‘76, Paul Martinez nel ‘78 e John Edward Johnson nell’82, più il matrimo-nio in Scozia con rrito non riconosciuto in Italia con Riccardo Fogli nel 1974). Ha attratto artisti e musicisti come Leo Ferrè, Vinicius de Moraes, Lucio Fontana, Tano Festa e Mario Schifano, con Mick Jagger va a fare shopping in incognito e con Jimi Hendrix passa una notte romana su una Cinquec-ento avvolta in una nuvo-la di fumo, i momenti di intimità con Frank Sina-tra e David Bowie, l’am-icizia con Robert Plant. A 70 è un mito vivente, ma di se stessa continua a dire: “Sono la persona più normale che conosco”.

Oggi dopo una vita di emigrati in questa terra occogliente con tante opportunita’ siamo pieni di gratidutine alla nos-tra terra adottiva. Il solo rammarico, mi diceva Arrico, “che a questa eta’ mi son dimenticato l’Ital-iano e purtroppo l’Inglese non l’ho imparato”. Anche con umore che Lui si da speranza di una vecchiaia spensierata.

Arrico, goditi questi anni d’oro te li sei meritati, da parte di tutti I soci ti ricordiamo come un pa-triarca del nostro centro. Auguri!

Onore,al San Marino Club. E’ stata servita una prelibata cena con un vasto menu.

Sento l’obbligo di sin-tetizzare che l’apice della serata e’ stata la parte-cipazione di giovani e giovanissimi – piu’ di 100 ragazzi.

In piu’ di 40 anni di attivita’ nella comunita’, e’ la prima volta che sono testimone di una pre-senza cosi’ bella. Vedere questi ragazzi in pista a divertirsi, ma ancora piu’ emozionante e’ stato osservare i piu’ anziani che si sono goduti questo spettacolo che i ragazzi hanno offerto in forma di entusiasmante ballo e allegria. Questo deve es-sere un esempio modello, che le altre associazioni dovrebbeo segure per il bene del futuro.

Infine sento l’obbligo di ringraziare gli orga-nizzatori per il gentile riferimento verso il Com.It.Es di Detroit ed il suo Presidente. Ancora com-plimenti e buona contin-uazione in futuro!
