Some may think I’m the Grinch who stole New Year’s resolution butthat’s a-okay by me. After years of disappointments and beatingmyself up (over never ending, unrealistic, over ambitious andunfulfilled resolutions gone bad) I decided that my resolve isto forge a new way to kick start the new year. It’s time toforgo this silly new year’s notion and make way (which reallymeans making time) for uplifting no-no’s instead!

It’s really quite simple. The no-no resolution is about lettinggo of what’s unimportant and taking better care of what’salready there. Kid’s instinctively no-no it! Watch thesewise little farts in action, they don’t make

silly lists of resolutions because they take onething, one task, one step at a time. Have you ever

met a seven year old on New Year’s eve who said‘I’ve got this amazing checklist, you gotta see it, it’s

about a page long with all these nifty things that I’mgonna cram in to the new year, yup, when I grab hold of

these big goals I’ll be the golden child alright, I’ll put a big fatcheckmark beside each one, and when I get to that last goal...phew...that’s when I’ll be perfect, that’swhen I’ll achieve true happiness...boy oh boy, what a year this is gonna be!’. Kinda ridiculous, isn’t it? Sowhy do we, as adults, seem to repeat this self destructive act on the cusp of each and every new year?

We seem to overdo our ‘to do’s’ all the time. It makes me wonder if we’re programmed to reachfor unrealistic goals or if we’re simply trying to keep up with what we think is expected of us. Imean, if Oprah does it shouldn’t we? (we still love you Oprah). It’s always our quest tobecome something bigger, someone better, somewhat richer, somehow smarter,....but really, when we really, really think about it, all we want is one thing: happiness. Now there’s a gazillion ways to get our fix, and everyone strives for happiness in adifferent way, yet we often complicate it to the point that we don’t even see thebeauty of the simple things that make us most happy everyday. It’s rarely the bigthings and most often the most simple things - once again, refer to a kid and they’ll

give you the skinny on that one.

Here’s the big question to get your no-no’s kick started: Who and what are your happymakers? Now that’s a wonderful list to think about! It’s things like your kids reaching for goodnight kisses, carsstarting like a charm in sub-zero weather, your dog doing the happy dance when you get home (wouldn’t it bewonderful if your partner did that too! ;)...the list goes on as the day is long. The no-no is really about saying yes-yes toyour happy makers and giving them your full and undivided attention. I promise, if you give these things more of yourtime and more of your all important attention sheer happiness will blissfully ensue for all of you.

Buddha said it best: ‘it is better to travel well than to arrive’....so travel well my friends, never you mind aboutarriving at the end of those big lofty goals, you’ll get thereeventually (or not ;) either way it’s all good as long as you takecare of what and who you love along the way.

Be brave and make your way,Tracy-LynnP.S. in case you’re wondering, one of my no-no’s is ‘Talk Less - SeeMore’

Kudos to Operation Red-Nose! Iwould like to congratulate those whowere involved and volunteered overthe holidays, offering people a saferide home. It's excellent work, keepsthe roads safer, and it can save lives.

Did City Council hold SecretMeetings? The question has arisen, did our City Council hold secretmeetings? According to Mayor BobKilger, it was an oversight, and the

media was suppose to get notification about an in-camera meeting (presumably about embarrassing HR issues).Perception is nine-tenths of the truth, however it's the otherone-tenth, reality, which is the most important part of thatequation. Some may wonder, what are the laws concerning in-camera meetings? In June of 2007 the Supreme Court of Canadaissued a stern warning to municipal councils across the countryagainst holding meetings in secret. There are specific laws inOntario that say council meetings must take place in public, butthe statue identifies seven categories in which closed meetingscan be permitted including employee relations and litigation. All deliberations outside these seven areas must be held inpublic. Open meetings are important for transparency andaccountability. Even if an entire meeting is in-camera, a notice ofthe meeting must be made public. The over-sight by the City ismuddying the waters and creating the perception of a scandal.Could City Council and City Administration have dealt with thisbetter? I suspect the answers is yes.

The little train that couldn't! First Greyhound/Voyager busesdon't bother coming inside our City anymore, and now VIAtrains want to cut some services to Cornwall too. This is bad foreconomic development, this is bad for tourism, and this is bad

for Cornwall residents who rely on these services. It feels like Cornwall isbecoming more and more isolated. Both Bob Kilger and the CornwallChamber of Commerce have wrote press releases about this issue, strongly urging VIA to continue frequent services that benefit our City andeconomic development. These train service cuts will put Cornwall at aserious disadvantage. I took a VIA train to Toronto over the Christmasholidays to visit family there Toronto, and I really like taking the train. Ithink it's unfortunate that Cornwall will be getting reduced services.

Homelessness in the Winter! Being homeless and living on the streets isdifficult and dangerous enough. But when winter is added to theequation, with temperatures dropping to life-threatening lows, the resultis pure misery. I asked the question on Facebook, does Cornwall have anyemergency shelters for the homeless on these frigid winter nights?According to Carilyne Hébert, “anyone that is Homeless can go into theCornwall Community Hospital, check into Triage and once done anddeemed "homeless" can be place at a few different emergency locations.”At least the homeless have that option, but I still strongly believe the Cityneeds a permanent homeless shelter.

Fuddle Duddle! Environment Minister Peter Kent belittled NDP criticMegan Leslie for not attending the Durban conference on climate change.

This infuriated Liberal MP Justin Trudeau, after all it was the Harper government thatdecided not to accredit any opposition members, making it impossible for them toattend. Trudeau leapt to his feet, and shouted out: “You piece of sh–” and stareddown the Conservative benches. What's worst a politician who swears or a politicianwho lies? I think the media should focus more attention on the latter.

New Year, New Attitude and New GoalsRecently I saw glimpses of the life I want, thechanges I hope to make and the future I want tocultivate. It is going to take time, but I have setin motion the steps I need to take to make ithappen.

External factors can hinder progress andinfluence behaviours, but with persistence,

drive, hard work and a positive attitude; it can happen.

First step is to seriously look at everything. Take inventory of things, review time consumers and then create a list of what needs to change, reflect on desired outcome, voice it to close friends and family for theirsupport and encouragement and then take action.

So 10 days into the new year, I have kept my personal challengesresolution. I have set a schedule and have committed to doing at leastone hour of work at home every day. The results after only one week;25 hours dedicated to home projects, several rooms starting to lookthe way I envision, less clutter, better organization, several boxes andbags packed for donation, and the encouragement needed to keepgoing. These marathon ‘trying to get everything done on theweekend’ days are over. I’m left feeling either stressed, or guilty overwhat wasn’t completed. It doesn’t matter what time the homeprojects are done, but at least one hour a day has to be spent on

something home related, for both me and Brad. Not only do we have to domore, but we also have to maintain what we have done, so things have to beorganized and kept up.

To help keep me focused and energized, I have started practicing yoga again. Ihad my first “Hot Yoga” class, last Saturday at Spirit Tree Yoga Studio in Cornwallon Eleventh Street, and I intend to return again this week. It was invigoratingand soothing workout. The room was filled with eager ladies. Hot Yoga was sopopular, Lisa added a second class on Saturdays. This heat intensified yoga classis based on *Bikram Yoga’s twenty-six posture exercises. The session willsystematically move fresh, oxygenated blood to one hundred percent of yourbody, to each organ and fiber, restoring all systems to healthy working order, just as Nature intended. The Hot Yoga, twenty-six asana series is designed toscientifically warm and stretch muscles, ligaments and tendons, in the order in

which they should be stretched. For more info on all the different yogaclasses and types available visit * http://www.spirittreeyoga.net/.

I also returned to Zumba after a 6 month absence. Christal Huizingaand the Zumba ladies and men, make it a great experience. Her newlarger location at Nativity Hall (Agora) means she can get the partystarted and really ring in the new year with ample room to move andembrace the ”shake your way into a new you”, motto. Approximately300 people of all ages attended and participated in the ‘Hall Warming’evening. The energy in the room was outstanding. I was a littleworried that my long absence would affect things, but I’m happy to saythat although I don’t know the routines yet, I was able to get back intoit with ease. Newcomers are always welcome and it is a great way toexercise and have fun. I plan on attending twice a week; schedulepermitting. *Zumba is a fusion of Latin and International music-dance themes creating a dynamic, exciting ,effective fitness system. Theroutines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination offast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. It targets areassuch as glutes, legs, arms, abdominals and the most important musclein the body, the heart. It is a mixture of body sculpting movements witheasy to follow dance steps. For more info*http://www.zumbacornwall.ca/

Healthy eating is also on the menu both at home and at work. By notskipping meals, and eating sensible healthy food and drinking morewater; we feel better. Even junk food doesn’t taste as good to usanymore. Sure we have the occasional treat, but by taking time, planning meals and working together, we will not only save money butfeel better too.

Through social media and general conversation; I notice that a lot ofpeople are also working on personal goals. Stick with it, no matterwhat. Sure it can be discouraging and frustrating, especially during theearly stages; but with time, you’ll start to see the difference. Whateveryour goals may be; I wish you the best of luck.

So what does 2012 hold? Well that is an unknown, but for me I amstarting with a positive attitude, a fresh perspective, determination,strong-willed goals, a strong support system and a lot of belief with abig dose of hope!

Leisure travel -- this scribble was on the

top pile of papers that Dawn set down on themiddle shelf. Yes, at this time of year or just afterthe holidays, some people tend to think oftaking trips.

One such trip, if you like trains, is the trip acrossCanada. When I went it was called the --Silverand Blue . This trip takes four days and fournights. In the winter or summer the scenery isbreathtaking, and the vastness of our countrywill amaze you.

The train used to run from Montreal to Vancouver, but now it runsfrom Toronto to Vancouver.

The good thing about this trip is that taking the service fromCornwall, you can still catch the train for the West in Toronto thatevening. This service will look after your bags at the station while youwander around Toronto and shop or just go see touristy stuff.

If you take the latest train from Cornwall, you have about five hours tokill, before you board the train for the west. This gives you plenty of time tobrowse in the stores, and have a leisurely dinner in one of the manyrestaurants in the city, or just go visit friends.

When you board the train in the evening, your berth, roomette or drawing-room has been made ready, so that you can retire as soon as you board. Manypassengers wait until the train is moving before they retire as they want toexplore the train, and also there is coffee and tea, sweet rolls and muffins foryou in the lounge /observation car at the back of the train.

Now off you go through Toronto and head North then North West toWinnipeg, Manitoba. You snooze all night and wake to an endless forest oftrees, lakes, and rocks. You wonder where you are, only to learn that you arestill in Ontario. Yes, Northern Ontario. You have still a whole day before youleave this province, and enter the gateway to the west.

Once awake and dressed, off to the dining room you go for a very deliciousbreakfast. Usually there are two sittings in the dining car for each meal andsometimes three when the train is full. It is at this first breakfast that you willreceive your ticket for your next two meal times. You have several choices, from a very large breakfast to a tiny one.

When I’m on long trips like this one, I tend to enjoy the larger meals as they are

so delicious and I love food. Looking out the window of the dining car youoften see the winter animals roaming near the tracks. This may be fox, deer, moose, rabbit, wolf, mountain goat and mountain sheep, and several of ourfine feathered friends from the bird kingdom. These are the species that youwill see in the winter months.

Now you can return to your room or berth, or go to the lounge andobservation deck. Here you can read the various papers, such as Montreal,Toronto, and as you continue west, you will have the paper from the variousCities you pass by, or you can sit up in the observation deck and see thescenery and maybe catch some of the wild life. While in this car, you can helpyourself to tea and coffee, and sweet rolls and fruit that is always there foryour pleasure. Then if you like to have an alcoholic drink, the bar isunderneath the observation deck, and someone will serve you. Also in thiscar is an area where you can play board games or cards.

When traveling across our country, there is always times when the staff willexplain over the speakers for all to hear some interesting aspect about ourcountry. Such as how the early settlers settled in a certain area, how theywere able to survive our cold winters, and how the train was built and somestories of how this country was opened up.

The terrain of each province, and the way towns and cities were designed, are each unique to their area. Although the Prairie Provinces are consideredflat, and it is true you can see forever, there are rolling hills, and clumps oftrees, and the land is dotted with many homesteads, and the golden wheatfields covered in snow in the winter, and in summer a beauty to behold. Alsoin winter a stark beauty of whiteness on the land, that goes on and on, as faras the eye can see.

Even if it is only once in a life time, this trip is worth every cent. The wonderof the train, and the experience of travel across our beautiful country, stopping at the various stations even if only for a few minutes, gives you thetraveler a much better understanding of how vast is our land, and thedetermination of a people to survive in harsh conditions to live in freedom. We, who live in cities, tend to forget that it was the settlers who opened upthis country and lived off the land, and broke ground for the development ofour towns, and cities, were the early pioneers of our country. We arereminded of this in our area by Upper Canada Village.

The train was instrumental in joining the east and the west of our country. The passenger of the train can begin to have a deeper understanding of thedevelopment of our country as the train chugs past the various landscapesto its destination, the west coast.

The train slides into the Station. The morning is warm, sunny and clear, youhave finished breakfast, your bags are packed, and you’re ready todisembark. This journey is over, and yet you have just begun another toVancouver Island and the city of Victoria.

The story behind "TeenZ" simplyunfolds gradually over the time line of a longweekend, and teaches the viewer manyimportant lessons indirectly.

How do you choose a financial advisor? Like mostpeople, you probably are busy with your work andfamily, and may not have the time or expertiseneeded to thoroughly understand the investmentworld.

So how do you choose the right financial advisor? You can start by askingthe right questions. Here are a few to consider:

• Have you worked with people in my situation? As aninvestor, you have your own special set of characteristics: level of assets, stage of life, long-term goals, etc. Before you sign up to work with a financialadvisor, you need to make sure he or she is comfortable working withsomeone like you.

• What are your credentials? Inquire about a prospectiveadvisor's qualifications. Make sure anyone you might work with has all thenecessary securities licenses.

• Are you or the firm you represent affiliated with regulatoryorganizations? Ask whether the advisor or the firm he or she represents isregulated. For example, any firm or advisor who is a member of theInvestment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) would needto comply with rules that protect client assets if a firm becomes insolvent.

• What is your investment philosophy? Just like investors, financial advisors have different investment philosophies. Some might benaturally more aggressive, while others are more conservative. But the idealadvisor can provide you with guidance based on your risk tolerance andinvestment preferences.

• How will you communicate with me? Make sure yourfinancial advisor will communicate regularly with you. Find out when you'llreceive statements and how often you'll meet in person to review yourportfolio. Will your financial advisor call with suggestions andrecommendations? Are you free to contact him or her at any time?Remember, you're entrusting this person with your financial future – so youhave a right to always expect open, honest and frequent communications.

• What sort of resources can you draw upon? Find out if a prospectiveinvestment professional has access to quality research and technical expertise in keyareas, such as investments, insurance and estate planning. In some cases, a financialadvisor may be able to bring in added expertise through a relationship with anotherprofessional, such as a lawyer or accountant.

• How are you paid? Investment professionals can be paid throughfees, commissions, percentage of assets under management or even a combination ofthese. You need to know, right from the start, how your financial advisor is beingcompensated.

• Can you provide me with references? A lot of people are too shy toask for references. However, a reputable financial advisor will be happy to give yousome names of people you can call. Of course, you shouldn't expect a financialprofessional to provide you with the specifics of other clients' financial transactions. But you should be free to ask about a financial advisor's style, responsiveness, etc.Your association with a financial advisor is one of the most important businessrelationships you'll ever have. Making the right choice today can pay off into thefuture.

Christmas Kettle

Campaign

Surpasses Goal

The spirit of giving is alive and well inCornwall. On behalf of The Salvation ArmyI would like to express thanks andgratefulness to the many residents and

businesses of Cornwall and the SD&G area for the generosity shownduring this year’s Kettle Campaign. We surpassed the $75,000 goaland that will help us meet the increased demand for our services andprovide the funds needed to address the dehumanizing blight ofpoverty throughout 2012.

We owe the success of this year's campaign to everyone who donatedto the Kettles either in person, on line or by direct mail. (Receipts will bemailed by January 12) Thanks also to the many volunteers who mannedour kettles and the various retail stores and shopping centres thatwelcomed us in this Christmas. The Salvation Army relies on the support of numerous corporatepartners, including Walmart, LCBO and Loblaw Companies Limited, which allow Christmas Kettles to be placed in their stores each year.

Blessings to all who gave help and to those who need help. Throughunited efforts we are Giving Hope Today and all through the year.

Thank You Cornwall !

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS

The Joy of BeingBrilliantGenerally we look at thechallenges with being aCreative Soul but all thenegative stuff aside weshould take time to revelin the sheer joy of beingin the top percentile of

those who are considered brilliant.

Brilliant! Not me, I hear all your collectivethoughts at the idea that you may be just that.So why is this so hard to accept? I know thatfrom the time we were children we were taughtnot to be to self-absorbed. We were taughtthat humility was the way to go; pride comesbefore a fall and all the other cliché phrases tokeep us humble. It is a strange world that tellsus it is bad to acknowledge your abilities butfine to talk about your problems and shortcomings.

So starting today I want you to add to your listof things that you are grateful for one morecritical item. Your Brilliance! Thank yourMother, Father, Aunt Mabel or whatever higherpower you believe in and say it, I am Brilliant.

How do I know you are brilliant? If you createanything and feel the calling of the muses, youare Brilliant. What is more important is that youknow you are brilliant. Once you do you will

start to shine brighter and brighter and your creative selfwill become boundless. If you need more than that asan example just do the following: Think about a timewhen you created something, a song, a poem, youpainted effortlessly, danced with wings on your feet orwrote passages that flowed so easily you were convincedyou were channeling Hemmingway. How did you feel?Excited, light, joyful, exhausted and happy, definitelyhappy; you were alive with every nerve tingling. This isbrilliance.

We all have experienced it and have the power to feel itdaily, but often we don’t, why? I think that all thishumility training as children that sabotages ourbrilliance, so starting today; I give you all permission toaccept your brilliance and to start every day saying “I ama brilliant, creative, artistic soul, thank you (insert name) Ishall not waist it!”Once you accept that this is the truth about you amazingthings will happen. You will find that the brilliant ideaswill flow and brilliant ideas are a little like rabbits onceyou have a couple of them the next thing you know youhave a million of them. Will you have down days? Sure,we all do but getting back on track will be much easier ifyou are accepting of how great you really are. Will someof your ideas or creative expressions be not so brilliant?Yes, of course. The important thing is to not mistakearrogance with knowing and appreciating your creativebrilliance. Arrogant people never accept that they makemistakes or are not perfect. We know we make mistakesbut when we don’t – Get out the sun glasses and watchout!!

sI am so happy and excited to be able to share with you thewisdom and benefits of Yoga. This column will focus on lessonslearned during a Yoga class and how we can take them “off themat” and into our everyday lives. Before we begin, allow meto introduce myself. My name is Lisa Blanchard and I was bornand raised in Cornwall. I am a typical Cornwallite in that I wasraised in both our beautiful languages of French and English. Iattended Ecole La Citadelle and thoroughly enjoyed my youthin Cornwall. I did, however, have a Gypsy Spiri, in that I wantedto explore what this world and country had to offer. So I left

Cornwall at the age of 18 to go to the University of Ottawa. After spending timein Ottawa, I moved to Vancouver, then to Calgary and then finally to Dallas, Texas. Inmy travels, I met wonderful people and learned so much. What I realized is that wehave a lot more in common than we have differences. And, that all of us just want tobe happy and make our children happy. I decided to return to Cornwall after beingaway for more than 20 years because my mother is ill, and I missed my family, friendsand this wonderful part of the country. Now that I am back in Cornwall, I am trulyamazed how this city has changed and grown. I am excited that we have more artsand cultural events, great restaurants and entertainment, and two great athleticfacilities; the Aquatic Centre and the Benson Centre. Cornwall is truly a great city tolive in and raise our children!

I am proud to offer another great facility, Spirit Tree Yoga Studio. We are located at 117Eleventh St. W (entrance on side of building, 2nd door). We offer all kinds of differentYoga classes, including Hot Yoga, Kids Yoga, Baby Yoga, Senior Yoga, Hatha Yoga andGentle Yoga. Please visit www.spirittreeyoga.net to get more information on classschedules, styles, times and prices. Not only will we be offering Yoga classes, we willalso be featuring workshops and events that support a Yoga lifestyle; workshops on

essential oils, healthy foods, couples massage, baby massage, gardening, and a whole bunchmore. Spirit Tree Yoga is a place of community where like-minded people can meet and growto support our community in a healthy way! I hope you will come join us!

Now for our “Off The Mat”wisdom: Yoga literally means “Union”. Yoga unites body, mind andspirit. It is a holistic practice/technology for life. During yoga postures that focus onstrengthening and balancing the body, we breathe in and out continuously, even during thedifficult poses. We learn to breathe through difficulty knowing that the pose will soon cometo an end. To bring this tidbit of wisdom into everyday life, breath through the good timesand breath through the bad times, knowing that it too will soon end.

Love and Blessings, Lisa Blanchard, Spirit Tree Yoga www.spirittreeyoga.net

Creative DestructionI received an e-mail just the other day from aformer coaching client where she shared that she

was engaged in creative destruction. This conjuredup all sorts of images for me as I imagined what creative destruction mightactually mean. And there was a part of me that said, YES, I get it! I havebeen in the process of moving from floor to floor in our house, rippingthings apart, purging the accumulated stuff of years gone by, de-cluttering everything I can in preparation for a move to our new office. Iunleashed my inner dragon – just ask my poor husband who for the mostpart simply stayed out of my way. This is not the first time he has witnessedmy creative destruction as this has occurred with every significant movewe have had.

In the notion of space management (December roadSIGNS column), I havelearned that despite my best efforts, paper, books, files, binders, officematerials, you name it, simply accumulate. And, I have learned that once Ibegin the process in one part of my house, a domino effect occurs.Example: Move old office, furniture and contents to new office. Re-paintand clean old office and move coaching/meditation room to that location.Clean old coaching/meditation room and convert to third bedroom. Build‘murphy bed’ in new coaching room to allow for conversion into forth

bedroom. Whew! Now bear in mind that at each step of the way the creativedestruction part involves assessing just how much you are going to move and whatneeds to be purged first. All in all I have released seven large recycle bins of paperand eight boxes of books. This plus all the things that were simply thrown away hascreated a much lighter household.

Now all I have to do is apply these same lessons to the rest of my life. Care to joinme? If you do here are the questions I have been asking myself:

1. What are you prepared to discard that really doesn’t fit with yourcurrent picture of you? Consider any limiting beliefs you have about yourself, anyfears that are old and dusty, any messages from parents, teachers or others whichare out of date and simply need to be purged.

2. What stories have you filed away that feels like a ball and chainaround your ankle? Consider people and /or situations you have not forgiven andwhere forgiveness is long overdue or situations which you feel you did not handlewell and need to forgive yourself.

3. What relationships need to be ended? Consider those people in your lifewho criticize you or do not support you or people you simply don’t connect withas they have different values than you have. Let them go.

4. What is it you want to engage in that really fuels your passion?Whether this is work or play, begin to assess how and where you spend your timeand decide whether this is time well spent. Consider how the activity makes youfeel. If it doesn’t light you up, find something that does. Be curious and experiment.I can see that in examining these questions I have a few critical decisions to makemyself, and with the beginning of another new year - what perfect timing. Here weare in 2012 where the spiritual gurus are predicting the end of the world as weknow it (a pretty heavy thought I admit). Without understanding fully what thatmeans, I have decided, like my client, that a little creative destruction will do thetrick and force me to simply be more conscious of the choices I am making todayand in my tomorrows. I invite each of you to do the same and to wonder what is upfor you to change or shift in your life, to release anything that no longer serves youand to make space for all that is in your highest good.

Watch out world, here we come!

Help Joe,

While I was gone over christmas my furnace quit and my pipes froze. My toilet broke and watersprayed all over my basement. My neighbour who was looking after my place noticed it and shutoff the water with little damage, fortunately! So I had a plumber come and make the repairs andinstall a new toilet but the next day I sprung another leak in the basement. I shut off the wateragain and have had it off for a couple days now. The plumber is coming back but I am afraid to turnthe water back on. I don't want to ruin my house.

What should I do? Helen.

Well Helen,

Your plumber should be more thorough when doing his repairs. In a frozen plumbing situation, there is rarely just one broken pipe. Frozen water willsplit pipes , break fixtures, separate fittings and pop off valves. Sometimes it will partially separate a connection and it will hold water for a while until itis disturbed for some reason (this is likely what happened to you). I recommend that after the new repairs are made, you have your plumber pressuretest the entire water supply system. It should be tested to no less than 100 psi and this pressure should hold for at least two hours. Any drops in pressureindicate further leaks in the system and will have to be identified before water is turned back on. All in all what a terrible way to ring in the new year.

I hope the rest of 2012 is better for you. Joe

I would like to wish a happy new year to all my customers and readers. All the best to you, your family and friends in 2012.

Nia or Burlesque? Which one is for me?Well, I have a hard time answering this question as I teach both techniques! But, rather I thought I’d throw the question out to youmy readers. For me both are amazing avenues to explore movement and increase my health and well-being. Nia gives mebalance, vitality and dynamic strength. Burlesque excites me to perform and interact with others and gives that extra kick in mystep. The choice is yours! Who knows? Maybe you’ll end up just like me! A radical living and creating in both realms...

Nia is a physical, mental and spiritual practice combining martial arts, dance and healing arts to promote self-healing, fitness andwell-being in a body. The form of Nia takes on its own presence in each person as the class develops and is nurtured by makingchoices through the Sensation of Pleasure and joy, not pain and exertion. By ‘listening’ to what your body needs, wants anddesires you guide it to move in its own natural timing and way. A key principle in the technique is finding, “The Body’s Way.”

Everyone is different. Everybody is different. Therefore, modifying themovement given is only natural and encouraged in order to make the work efficient andenjoyable. These choices are made individually as the class is taught and in turn makes a veryunique experience for each person as they are empowered to be the master of their ownmovement.

No matter what your age or fitness level is, anyone can take a Nia class and be amazed. It is alsoa great introductory class to other disciplines. If the martial arts intrigue you there is Tai Chi,Tae Kwando, and Aikido! If dance is of interest, there is Modern, Jazz and Duncan dance! And,finally if the healing arts tweak your senses there is Yoga, Alexander Technique and The Work ofMoshe Feldenkreis.

The class is a low impact workout, done barefoot or in soft shoes if preferred. Benefits includerelaxation and stress-reduction, better circulation and heart health, it supports weight loss, increases energy, strength, flexibility, mobility and agility. You walk away with a betterunderstanding of the science of the body, a more refined and dynamic nervous system and youhave better posture, balance and stability. There are many other positive outcomes as well.Check out my profile on the Nia website at www.nianow.com/amanda-marini-rohde for moreinformation on me and the practice itself.

Now, as for Burlesque I see it more as a dance or performance based practice as it in essence isa combination of both.

Definition of BURLESQUE according to www.merriam-webster.com

1 a literary or dramatic work that seeks to ridicule by means of grotesque exaggeration or comicimitation

2 mockery usually by caricature

3 theatrical entertainment of a broadly humorous often earthy character consisting of shortturns, comic skits, and sometimes striptease acts

As for a burlesque dance class the last definition seems to fit the best, except for the “striptease acts”component. Yes, there is a certain level of sass, and sexiness incorporated into the technique, but noremoval of clothing is involved. In fact, the work fosters a sense of pride and confidence in the studentsas they strut their stuff across the room. Facial expression and playfulness is encouraged also. Theoverall experience is generally a hoot and makes for a very fun time. You may have heard of the termburlesque before, but you just don’t know until you have taken a burlesque class to truly understand themany layers that are involved in such an art.

The choice is yours! Thanks for reading this week folks! I thought I would leave you with this quote tochew on. Enjoy!

“It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.” Mark TwainI welcome your comments and feedback. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] can also check out my blog at amandamoves.wordpress.com for more articles on movement.

Ode to Nature

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Born in North Lancaster in 1942, Claudette Pilon, a graduate inpsychology and psychotherapy from Ottawa U and St. Paul’s University, develops an interest inarts in the nineties. She sees her retirement approaching and she searches for a venue whereshe can continue developing her creative potential. What better than art! Through differentmedium she plunges in her soul and contacts her deeper self.

In 2000 she participates in a creativity week-end in Montreal and she discovers her passion forart. Her projects are mostly inspired by photos of nature that she and her spouse, GillesRouthier, have taken during their trips across Canada. Even though she inspires herself frompictures, she hates being tied down to copying for she considers this as inhibiting her expressionof self. For her, mistakes are a great source of learning and making mistakes is more importantthan limiting self-expression. She loves the philosophy of an artist who says “Mistakes arehappy accidents!”

Timidly she proceeds by painting all occasion cards and then she attends shows at the Arts andCraft, Massena Library, Thousand Island, Alexandria and Centre Culturel de Cornwall. It is onlyin 2012 that she dares present her art work to the public in a solo venture. This represents anexciting step in her artist career!

CORNWALL'S ELEPHANTSAny town with a history that spans four centuries is bound to have numerous humourous stories. Two of of my favourites revelove around elephants and circuses.

In Victorian 19th century Ontario elephants and circuses were synonymous. A visit by the circus wasan event to savour and extend if possible. To keep the circus in town a little longer, a future lawyer,A.P. Macdonald thought it would be good sport to see how well an elephant could swim the St.Lawrence. To carry-out his plan he raised the considerable sum of $100 from his friends to entice thecircus manager to test the elephant's swimming abilities. Money passed hands and the elephant wastaken to the riverbank for the show to begin.

Prodded into the river, the elephant took the on-lookers by surprise by heading straight for CornwallIsland. This sent everyone to all available boats "to turn the huge beast back," Macdonald regaled "they might aswell have attempted to stop an iceberg. Mr. Elephant was bound for the south shore and he pushedthe obstructing boats away as though they were many straws." Once safely on the island, it took thecombined efforts of evryone involved to get the elephant back to Cornwall.

Having suffered once at the hands of Cornwall's youth, the circus struck Cornwall off the tour the nexttime it visited Eastern Ontario.

Not be deprived of their circus, A.P. Macdonald and his mates learned that elephants loved potatoes.Discovering that the circus was planning to pass through Cornwall under the cover of night, the boysscattered several bushels of spuds along the route, and hid and waited. Around 2 a.m. the circusarrived. Suddenly Mr. Elephant stopped to feel about the road with his trunk. Finding a potato, theelephant ignored the prodding of his keeper while he slowly zig-zagged along the streets to find allthe treats left for him. This hunt slowed the circus cavalcade to a snailspace and, when the sunfinally rose, Cornwallites were treated to a free parade until the elephant found every last potato.C
