LEFT: Silhouette of Mrs. Bruce. Peggy O'Sullivan Bruce (died 1819), operated the St. Patrick's and St. Andrew's Inn on 1st Street onthe present site of Cornwall Square's parking lot with her Scottish Loyalist husband Alexander during the late 18th and early 19thcenturies.

A first-hand sketch of Peggy was provided by British Army surgeon Dr. William "Tiger" Dunlop while in Cornwall during the War of1812.

He wrote in his book "Recollections of the War of 1812" that "I would do gross injustice to my reader... were to I quit Cornwallwithout mentioning a most worthy personage, though in a humble station, was one of the best and most original characters I evermet...This was...my worthy hostess, of the principal log hotel Peggy Bruce."

"It was my luck...to be a prodigious favourite with the old lady; but even favour with the ladies has its drawbacks...and one of thesewas being dragged to the bedside of every man, woman and child who was taken ill...At first I remonstrated against my beingappointed physician extraordinary to the whole parish...but Peggy found an argument which, as it seemed perfectly satisfactoryto herself, had to content me. What the d__l does the king ay you for, if you are not to attend to her subjects when they requireyour assistance?"

"At the head of her medical dicta was that it was essential 'to support the strength.' That was to cram the patient with every kind of food that...he could be prevailedupon to swallow...A hot bath with herbs infused in it was another favourite remedy...Her concluding act at the breaking of consultation was generally to dive intothe recesses of a pair of pockets the size and shape of saddle bags, from which she would fish up a couple of bottles of wine of which she deemed might be usefulto the patient."

"Peggy...possessed a keen vein of sarcastic humour, which often mae her both feared and respected. A Colonel...as brave a soldier as ever drew a sword, but toomuch of a martinet to be a favourite with the militia...Peggy, who respected his military talents at least as much as she disliked his hauteur, meeting him the daybefore his departure, addressed him with - 'Och! Colonel dear, and are ye going to lave us - sure there will be many a dry eye in the day you quit it."

FAMOUS WOMEN OF CORNWALLPART 2 of a 4 part series as we prepare for the I Am Woman show- March 4th - Cornwall Civic Complex

LEFT: Grace McLeod Roberts at her easel in her Cornwall Studio. Grace McLeod Roberts (1899 - 1982), was a teacherby profession and an artist from childhood. Born in Glengarry, she started teaching in the 1920s in a one-room schoolhouse. She subsequently attended the Ontario College of Education and the Ontario College of Art where she studiedunder Arthur Lismer, a member of the Group of Seven. Roberts now moved to Cornwall and taught both English andArt at CCVS and St. Lawrence High Schools for over 40 years. Known for her ability to recite Shakespeare she told areporter that "When I could make one of those boys like and appreciate literature, it was heaven's first order for me.

In her time, Roberts was known as Cornwall's "First Lady of Art." A painter, Roberts told reporter Linda Gilmour that "Ipaint because there is some urge in me that make we want to express myself in this medium." Roberts shared herappreciation of art by teaching night classes, Saturday children's programmes, directing the Cornwall Art Associationand arranging art exhibits.

BELOW LEFT: Alda MacKinnon in costume in front of the United Counties Museum in the Wood House (aka CornwallCommunity Museum), on its original 2nd Street West location across from Domtar in Canada's Centennial year,1967. Alda Arbuthnot MacKinnon was known by Cornwall's school children as "the nice lady at the museum." As thecurator for the WoodHouse Museum from 1968 to 1990, Alda always said she "loved museum work and the people youmeet, especially the children."

Born on a farm in Cornwall Township, Alda was related to hundreds of people throughout the UnitedCounties. She attended local Townships schools and upon graduation attended Cornwall CommercialCollege, and then obtained a job with the Civil Service in Ottawa for a short time. Mrs. MacKinnon went towork for the Children's Aid Society after her husband's death, and then took a training course about antiqueidentification and restoration at Upper Canada Village. For here it was a short step to the Wood House.

An oral historian, and genealogist, Jim Brownell aptly summed meeting for the first time.

"I first met Alda MacKinnon, when, I interviewed her for a history class assignment. I called the museum toarrange an interview and the first words I remember Alda saying were "And what Brownell family are yourfrom?" Knowing Alda as I got to know her...I found that she was greatly interested in family relationships androots in those she met. With notebook in hand I arrived at the Wood House and was greeted by a mostcharming woman, one who made this young high school student welcomed...My interview with her wasmost interesting and I left with a notebook full of facts and the understanding that this lady was "Mrs.Cornwall and Area."

Kudos to Bowl for Kids Sake! The latest count says over $71,000 was raised last Saturday for Big Brothers and Big Sistersof Cornwall and area. The organizers of Bowl For Kids Sake did a fantastic job. Over 200 teams participated, and I was on theRock N' Bowlers team with Sara Murphy and company. I had a fantastic time despite all those gutter-balls!

New census shows full extent of Cornwall's growth! New census data released by Statistics Canada shows that the Cityof Cornwall grew by a grand total of 375 residents! With growth like that it could take decades before the City reaches the50,000 mark. Unless of course City Council comes up with a good long term plan to attract new businesses and to diversifythe economy. Decent jobs and quality of life are what attract people to move to a new City, and a larger tax base wouldmean lower taxes and/or increased services for everyone. I think one option worth considering is a Trades school righthere in Cornwall, a skilled work force being trained in Cornwall could attract new jobs.

Only Admins can post on City's Facebook page! The City of Cornwall's Facebook page is a diverse online community with over5000 members. It was a great tool for communication, not just for posting City news, but people could post information about local events, andother important information such as bus cancellations. The page had a simple terms of use policy, to summarize, it said to talk respectfully and donot criticize people, businesses, and organizations in our community. It's not a soapbox, it's a tool for economic development. Simple and fair, buta small handful of people had difficulties respecting these guidelines. The logical course of action would have been to delete those few individualswho continuously broke the terms of use. Instead, City Administration over-reacted, and the decision was made that only administrators areallowed to post, and administrators are people who are employed by the City of Cornwall. The City of Cornwall has the right to do this with theirFacebook page, however I strongly disagree with this decision. A lot of useful information and content will no longer be posted, and it's the 5000members of this group that are losing out.

Web poll caused a stir! Claude McIntosh wrote in the Standard Freeholder about a poll that appeared on the Cornwall Free News website thatasked its readers this question: “Who do you think is the current or past most corrupt politician or city leader in the Cornwall, Ontario, area? The pollhad names of some City Councillors, City Administration officials, politicians, business owners, and civic leaders. I think it was a loaded question.According to McIntosh some people in the City are now seeking legal advice. The web poll, which caused a stir, appears to have been taken downfrom the website.

No International Art in the Park! Last summer Cornwall was offered sculptures in the park as a part of an international peace initiative stretchingfrom our home town all the way to Chile. The $10,000 request to cover the cost of bases and plaques seems to be too high a price tag for the Citybudget. I hope money for arts and culture will be made available when a proposal for an arts and culture centre finally reaches the Council table.

Tombler not Anti-French! I don't think Dr. Tombleris anti-French when he criticizes the hospital's policyto only hire bilingual nurses. I believe his heart is inthe right place, but I also believe bilingual

candidates should be given preference. Notwithstanding that, qualified nurses should not be turned away simply becausethey are not proficient in French. I think there are somepragmatic solutions to meet the criteria of the FrenchLanguage Services Act, and to still hire qualified nurses whomay not speak perfect French. For instance, it could be mademandatory that English speaking nurses who are hired, musttake French courses. Not every nurse has to be perfectlybilingual, but for French patients and clients, they shouldalways be able to speak to a nurse who is fluently French. Ithink a more balanced approach needs to be established, thatis fair to patients and also to nurses who have not masteredthe French language.

Hearts, Wheels and Paws

The sun is shining brightly on thisbeautiful, albeit cool, crisp February day.It is the month with Valentine’s Day,Family Day, Winter Carnivals and plentyof activities; so get out there and enjoy. It is a great time to assess the beginningof the year as we soldier through theremainder of the winter and gleefully

look forward to spring.

After a long-term relationship ended in the fall, this romanticmonth is not something I was looking forward to. The heartsand flowers are nice, but when you are not the recipient; youcan’t be bitter, and you can’t be sad. Yes, there was a yearshortly after my divorce that I felt like watching the Screamtrilogy, but I am not feeling the anti-Valentine vibe. So if my co-workers and friends are graced with beautiful arrangements, jewellery, candy etc. I will be very happy for them. I am notanti-romance. Yes, it is harder time when I don’t have asignificant other, but it is not impossible. It makes me thatmore appreciative of the small gestures and kind wordseveryday. Everything happens for a reason and like they say, sometimes things have to fall apart for better things to come

together… I have people in my life that make me laugh and smile andare there for me. They are the ones I hold close in my heart.

This is the month I emerge from my cocoon and become a bit of a socialbutterfly. Less than a week into the month and I have scheduled somedinner with friends, a girls’ day, a couple of activities and a few otheroutings that we are firming up details. Yes, it is time to get out there andconnect with friends and family again. We all have busy lives but we haveto make the time. Even if it means scheduling it several weeks ahead oftime, go ahead and do it.

An event in town has me feeling a little nostalgic, and gets the wheelsturning, so to speak. The Seaway Roller Derby Girls are presenting aValentine’s Roller Disco where people can don either the quad skates orthe roller blades. When I heard about this, I invited both of my sisters togo with me, and they agreed. We still have skates, so we won’t have torent them and talk about a blast from the past. My sister Lisa used to takeme with her to Disco Wheels on a regular basis when I was in my pre-teen, early teen years. This was my escape, my place to soar and I lovedit. I was even in a roller skating group and really enjoyed it.When we weren’t at the roller rink, we would skate in our

neighbourhood and in the nearby school yard. We’d go early and practice our spins, jumps, tricks and routines. It wasawesome. Mel was significantly younger, but she’d skate too. I am reallylooking forward to lacing up again. No I don’t think I’ll be as adventurousas I once was, but it will be a great event, several people involved withDisco Wheels will be there and it is fun for the entire family. Although Ihave rollerblades, I prefer the quad skates and still have my skates fromway back when.

I was really pleased when Family Day was introduced several years ago.In honour of the first Family Day, we adopted two cats; two sisters thatare like ying and yang. One is very active but doesn’t enjoy company, andthe other loves company, but is not very active; together they areinseparable black and white cats. They will be 4 years old, this Family Day,and so we celebrate them being in our family each year. There are so many pets in need of a good home. Over the years, myfamily and friends have adopted pets. They are great companions andcan enrich your lives. Our local OSPCA has many special promotions andevents for the month of February. Visit www.sdg.ontariospca.ca to learnmore about the Paws and Give program and the Auctions for theAnimals on Feb. 12 at the Ramada Inn.

There is so much to do in our area, get out there and enjoy. It is a leapyear, so take a leap of faith, try something new, embrace your life and begrateful for all your blessings.

JennFit Exercise: Position your hands shoulder width apart on a secured bench. Move your feet out as far out in front of you as possible and place on another bench.Place a weight plate over your hips and quads (I use 45 lbs). Straighten out your arms and keep a little bend in your elbows in order to always keep

tension on your triceps and off your elbow joints. Slowly lower your upper body downtowards the floor and keep your elbows tucked into your sides. Once you reach thebottom of the movement, slowly press off with your hands and push yourself back up tothe starting position with your triceps.Try 3 sets of 12-15 reps.

This week I’ve chosen to talk to you about natural alternatives topersonal products and why I use them. Most of the followingproducts can be purchased at Baxtrom’s in the health and beautyaisle in the organic section.

The first product that I wish to talk about is the anti-perspirant ordeodorant. I always purchase Tom’s aluminum-free deodorant. Why aluminum free you ask?? Because women shave their arm pitsregularly (more of a chance of cutting the skin) the aluminum hasa better chance of being penetrated into the blood stream. Therehave been studies done to compare the rate of breast cancer inother countries where they live in a more “natural way” (Italy,Germany, France etc…) where women often do not shave…theyhave a lower rate of breast cancer. When you have a mammogram, you are asked not to wear deodorant right?? When x-rays of breastcancer are seen…often times there is also aluminum found in thatarea?? One very important thing to remember is that everythingthat you put on your skin is automatically taken into your bloodstream…it’s all connected…the following link is very interesting.http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/aluminum-and-breast-cancer/

I use Tom’s fluoride-free natural toothpaste. . They are all greattasting; peppermint, spearmint, fennel is my personal favorite(black licorice). My son uses it as well, when asked if he wants thefluoride treatment at a dental appointment…he tells them “whywould I do that??I use fluoride-free toothpaste. Now how can youargue with that? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSKToTFitd0

I haven’t worn perfume in 4 years, I am now at the point that if Ismell perfume or after shave on others it really bothers me…I likeusing the Avalon organic brand shampoo and conditioner, justsmells so fresh.

I use organic, coconut based shaving gel for my legs, I especiallylove the one at Natural Food Pantry (Billings Bridge Mall, corner ofRiverside and Bank St in Ottawa). I love to use the organic naturalolive oil based soap bars “Neolia” that I purchase at Costco…soworth it…really gives you nice soft skin….http://www.neolia.com/

to love on Valentine's DayWith Valentine’s Day fast approaching, it’s worth taking alook at the television shows and movies where the couplesdepicted are actually believable in their relationships. It’s allabout chemistry, whatever role you’re playing and thatsuccessful chemistry isn’t as common as you’d think. In thatlight, here are some couples I think mesh perfectly together.

Leonard and Penny in The Big Bang Theory: He’s thegenius science nerd; she’s the pretty barely educated girlnext door. They started out as friends, then became lovers, broke up and this season have gotten back together again –sort of. As acted by Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco, the pairis, perhaps, the most convincing of all TV screen couples, aseemingly mismatched pair who may have more in commonwith each other than they thought.

Long married, Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire Dunphy (JulieBowen) from Modern Family are probably the mostauthentic married couple on television. They get on eachother’s nerves, tweak each other and squabble often but youjust know they’ll be together through thick and thin.

Rick and Ilsa in Casablanca. The hard-bitten expatiateAmerican nightclub owner and his Norwegian ex-lovermakes beautiful music together during the chaos and terrorof the Second World War. Humphrey Bogart and IngridBergman’s pairing, in a movie that was largely made up as itwent along and was originally to star Ronald Reagan (!) andAnn Sheridan in the leads, is a miracle movie that stillresonates today. Possibly the greatest tragic love story ofthem all.

For sheer, sizzling sexual chemistry, the on again, off againrelationship between lawyer Alicia Florrick (JuliannaMargulies) and her boss Will Gardner (Josh Charles) onThe Good Wife can’t be beat. Their sexual attraction tooktwo whole TV seasons to be consummated only to fallasunder when Alicia, out of guilt at neglecting her family, ended it. But their feelings for each other are still there sowho knows what will still happen between them? Theirs isone of the best elements of a consistently terrific series.

Condemned to live his life backwards, from old age toinfancy, Benjamin (Brad Pitt) falls in love with Daisy (CateBlanchett) but, once undergone, their relationshipinevitably can’t last as Benjamin becomes younger andyounger while Daisy ages. The epic scope and dazzlingspecial effects of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button can’tobscure the deeply touching love story at its core. It’sunforgettable.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS Artist to yourself, above all be true!Today an artist friend of mine, whois new to the business of Art, askedme an important question. This isa question that all artists facesooner or later in their careers, the question of copying another

artist’s work.

If a potential customer comes to you and asks you topaint a Picasso or a Rembrandt painting for them to hangover their bed; perform a part in a stage play exactly likeLawrence Olivier with no room for other interpretation;sing like Michael Jackson or Alanis Morrissette, whichyou may sound a little like, and to dress and perform likethem for their event. Do you do it?

First of all I would like to say that my answer to thatquestion is my opinion only as I am not your conscience. In the end you are the only one that will live with thefuture outcome of this for or against. What I will say, however, is why would you want to? Artists are often, until they reach some level of fame, the most underpaidfor their talents of any profession in the world today andto add insult to that there is a line-up of people out thereready to exploit us because they know we want to bemoving up the ladder of success to live by our art.

My husband has often remarked to me that at artfestivals and events everyone but the artists are making moneyand sometimes he is not wrong. We can be seduced by the lure ofpainting or performing just for the money, after all no one will seethis if they only hang it in their home. There is big business intribute artists in the music business, for example here in MyrtleBeach there is a theatre dedicated to the look and sound alikeCher, Michael and Elvis impersonators and they are packed. Myquestion to them would be this, “If you sing that well, why not sellyourself, your way, your style?” If you paint well enough to copythe best, why not sell your painting; your acting ability; your way?

The short answer is simple, confidence. It all goes back to feelingthat you just as you are is not good enough, that you have to belike someone else to be recognized. Don’t fall into that trap.Believe in yourself and your dreams. Give you a chance to shine.

It’s OK to learn from the masters of your craft. This may mean towear the persona of a famous person in your art for a little while, try them on like a coat and wear it to see how it fits, but try severaland then squish them down, swirl them around and shake it out.Now it is you, and you are the best of them all and a lot of yourselfwhich is in my opinion better!

So when someone comes to me with a picture of another artistswork, saying paint me a Picasso I say, no! If you would like apainting done in the cubist style, I will paint you a S. TaylorHedges. It will definitely be better after all Picasso taught meeverything he knows, as did Braque, Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Danby,Bigelow, Powers, Sargent, Odjig, Morrisseau……...whew I couldgo on for days.

....The Little Black Dress I’ve always been the type of girl that likes to dress up,actually, I’m always the one who dresses up wheneverybody else doesn’t and my friends love tease meabout it. In all honesty, I have a problem leaving myhouse without heels on. Yes, I know, in the dead ofwinter this is not a very ‘practical’ (I will admit that I haveslipped and fallen this year, in about 5 inch heels downmy driveway and no I have not learned my lesson... I

KNOW I KNOW, I’m asking for it!) I just can’t help myself! They make thatoutfit you’re not sure about look THAT much better and let’s face it, they justmake us feel oh so pretty (beside the killer feet at the end of that night out!)they add just the right amount of ‘magic’ to that little black dress.

When I think of the ‘Little Black Dress’ I think of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast atTiffany's, looking so elegant, classy with a little twist of sexy. Audrey Hepburnset a tone for all women with that movie that I like to call fresh and fabulous!Women from all over the world were sporting the hairstyle, the big round blacksunglasses and of course the perfectly fit little black dress.

In a women’s closet there are always some must have’s that are not only anecessity but are also the base of a wardrobe that can get you out of any “I havenothing to wear” situation... Which is what I like to call “I’m Having a fight withmy closet” day/night!

My top 5 items are simple, classy with flair of sexy of course! They are:

1. The Little Black Dress (that wasn’t obvious was it?) either a little above theknee or right on the knee, which can allow you to wear it during the day or forthe evening. With a little accessorizing such as bangles, sunglasses, or even

some feminine earrings, and a fabulous pair of heels, you’ve got yourself a killer outfit!

2. The Black Blazer. I’m not talking with shoulder pads, I’m talking the boyfriend styletype blazer that is feminine, flattering to all body types that can be worn on top of adress, with a skirt, denim and heel... The list could go on. A black blazer can add thatbusiness flair to your outfit or can be sweet and sexy with some skinny jeans and apump or stiletto.

3. Black Pumps/Stilettos. SO important! They can get you out of any fashion footwearcrisis. Black pumps or stilettos dress up any outfit for day and/or night and can be wornwith all type of outfits (you can never have enough black type shoes!)

4. Black Pencil-Knee Skirt. Black skirts are fabulous! They can be work with boots, heels, flats, pumps, whatever works! They can be worn with blouses, blazers, all differenttypes of tops and can be worn for work or for an evening out! A must have for everywomen!

5. Accessories. ( not an item, I know, but they are needed) Pashminas, earnings (big orsmall colored studs), bangles (all types, a few or a lot), big flashy rings, necklaces ( long, short or a mix in between)... Accessorizing is easy on the wallet and can change up anyoutfit to be made from day to night, from casual to evening wear... It’s those little secretweapons that allows you to put the YOU in your outfit!

Go ahead, let that inner fashionista out...Your style defines YOU, don’t be shy... Let yourhair down and dare to be different.

Stay fabulous,

V.

New Project to Assist Break & Enter VictimsNo one expects to be a Break and Enter(B&E) crime statistic. It is very common for avictim of Break and Enter to experiencemany emotions, fears and stress as a resultof this type of offence. In partnership withJustice Canada, Victim Services of SDG&Awith the support of local police serviceshave developed a Break & Enter pilot projectto better assist victims of B & E.

This project consists of ensuring that B&Evictims receive support and information to

help ease their concerns, answer any questions they may have and providesecurity recommendations. Victims of a B&E can be sent an information packageby mail as a first step. A comprehensive B&E booklet has also been developedwith information which includes: common reactions to a B&E, things that you cando that may help, common reactions in children, helping children cope, as well ashome security and helpful local resources/business listings (i.e. police services, locksmiths, alarm companies, glass companies etc.). B&E victims receiving theinformation will also be called for a follow-up by Victim Services and offeredsupport, referrals as well as the opportunity to receive a free Home or BusinessSecurity Audit performed by trained members of the Police Services or VictimServices. Members of Victim Services have been formally trained in CrimePrevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). The purpose of this project isto support and assist victims of a B&E as well as offer recommendations on how tobetter protect their home and property. Recommendations are done based onthe concepts used through CPTED, the process whereby one manipulates thephysical environment to produce the desired behavioural effects. By providingsome basic target hardening recommendations, it is anticipated thathomeowners/business owners can take some easy, economical steps to protectthemselves from further incidents.

“This is a wonderful new initiative funded by Justice Canada and we hope to beable to provide the support and assistance that victims of B&E need and deserve”states Diane Plourde, Executive Director of Victim Services. “People often don’trealize the traumatic effect a B&E can have on individuals, including children. It isa violation of one’s private space. We want to be able to assist victims in dealingwith what has happened and help them feel more secure”.

HEART STRINGSFebruary always seems to stir up thelove feeling and possibly the lack oflove we feel.

Everywhere we go, Valentine’s Dayis a reminder to share our love withthose near and dear to us.

So many decisions, for the perfectcard that expresses how you feel about your loved one andhow much that person means to you, deciding on chocolateor flowers, maybe both. Do you go out for a romantic dinneror cook a romantic dinner at home? For those in arelationship, the choices are endless and the cost ofexpressing our love can also seem endless.

Don’t get me wrong, I celebrate Valentine’s Day, even when Ididn’t have a significant other in my life, I celebrated. It is oneday a year that is marked on the calendar that gives us openrein to express our love, be creative and maybe even be a littleextravagant.

I wish everyday was marked on the calendar with a heart, as areminder for us to say and show love, not just to oursignificant other, but to everyone in our life, yes, that includesYOU. It would not be about spending money and giving gifts,it would be about three powerful words “I Love You”, acts ofkindness, being compassionate, understanding andsupportive, each and everyday.

Let’s not wait for one day a year…to make love a bigdeal…How about a Valentine’s resolution to share your loveeach and everyday, no matter how busy or rushed you are, take time to show your love.

Until next time, I wish you a very Happy Valentine Day(s)ahead filled with love and kindness!

Sydney - Part 2Clare came in the other day andsaid: “Now remember to write ontrip, trip“. I said, “What are youtalking about?” Clare looked at mewith surprise; “you know that tripthat you were forced to take thissummer. The one that cost andarm and a leg, as you put it.”

Okay, Okay, I will talk about it. Yes,that expensive trip to down under to Australia.

(Continued from last week) Apart from entering theCountry, Australia is a great place to see although it isVERY EXPENSIVE. Don’t think you can live on 35.00dollars a day, because you cannot.

Oh, I forgot to tell you why it was so expensive to takethe trip in the first place. My friend decided to marry afellow from Australia she met on the Internet. She askedme to give her away in marriage. I was thrilled, and

started saving, and also knew that I would probably have to takea loan in order to pay for such a long trip. This I did.

Just before going, she calls and tells me the wedding is off. To saythe least, I was shocked!

What to do! Do I continue or cancel the plans. Some of thearrangements where made on the Internet, and you have to payin advance, and since everyone was sure the wedding was on, aswe had all seen the fellow, none bothered to buy cancellationprotection for rooms and trips within trips in the country. If Istayed home, all that would go down the drain, so I just decidedI might as well go and see the country.

Now back to Australia. The city of Sydney is huge, larger inpopulation than any city in Canada. Yes, the Opera house is downby sea/harbour and is worth seeing, not so much for it, as for allthe action that takes place around it. People playing ancientinstruments and selling C.D’s and others selling ice cream, touriststuff, and then you can sit by the bay and enjoy a coffee andsomething to eat. Also near this area is a street of many oldbuildings from past years selling articles that one could pack totake home. I just bought postcards as I had only carry-on luggagedue to restrictions on airlines within the country. I also saw aBaha’i temple up in the hills which overlooks the city. This ninesided building is made of, I think, cement with intricate patternson it and is set in the woods just off a highway. It allowed sometime for an reflection and quiet solitude in otherwise very busyday. My time was short in Sydney, and one picked and chosewhat people suggested I should see. This way I was able to seesome hilly countryside and sights around the main part of thecity, as well as some of the inner city and ocean view.

Food was not cheap, although it was tasty. Just to give you anidea of the expense, coffee was four dollars and no refills. If youwanted more you paid for it and in some areas coffee was fivedollars. A scone could be five, six dollars. It was good, but notcheap. It might have been more acceptable if their money was onpar with ours, but their money was worth more, and at the time Iwent our money was worth 104.00. So you can see howeverything cost.

When in these cities the best way to get around is to get a daypass on trams or buses, otherwise you will break your pocketbook.

I forgot to tell you about the hotels. Some are very expensive andothers that are large hostels, are cheaper. The small hotels arevery good. If you wanted to be close to the Chinese market itwould be wise to locate there in a hotel. The city is spread over alarge area with many bays between, so that travelling to eacharea can take time.

One could go on and on, but this gives you a little idea what itwas like, so till next time “ Melbourne a city for tourists”.
