Test of a Man .....Once again...local chiropractor Dr. Paul Poirier has managed to snag anothercelebrity to aid him in his quest of spreading the awareness about braintumours. He has, to date, recruited the help of ex California Governor ArnoldSchwarzenegger who's uncle, by marriage to Maria Shriver, was the youngerbrother of JFK...senator Ted Kennedy who passed away in 2009 of a braintumour. Poirier has also recruited the help of the most successfulbodybuilder in the history of the sport, Ronnie Coleman (the onlybodybuilder to beat Arnold's record by winning a staggering 8 Mr. Olympiatitles).

Fast forwarding to the present, Dr. Poirier's been conversing with and hassince recruited the founder and lead singer of the legendary Scottish rockband Jethro Tull...none other than flautist extrodinaire Ian Anderson seenhere with Dr. Poirier holding his team Cornwall business card two hours priorto his NY city Broadway show in early October of this year. You mightremember Jethro Tull's monster hits from the 70s including Aqualung,Crossed Eyed Mary, Thick as a Brick and Locomotive Breath. Although helives in the UK, Mr. Anderson has agreed to narrate Dr. Poirier's documentaryfilm on brain tumours titled "The test of a Man" which you can visit atwww.testofaman.com and view the trailer that's been completed. When askedwhy he chose Ian Anderson to narrate the film he humorously stated"because people with a heavy british accent just sound smarter than us whenthey speak....plus Sir Paul McCartney was busy". The film is expected to becompleted by late spring of 2013 and will be submitted into multiple filmfestivals.

Using Home Equity toYour AdvantageCanadians purchase homes for a variety ofreasons. Some want the stability of owningtheir own home, while others also look athome ownership as an investment vehicle. No matter what the reason, the truth is thathome ownership has proven itself to be a

good stable investment over time, and onewhich many Canadians are profiting from.

While many people have chosen to purchase their first homeduring these times of lower interest rates, there has also been alarge movement to refinance home loans and pull out equity forhome improvements, investments, college expenses, and evenhigh-interest debt consolidation. Canadians have been borrowingagainst their home’s equity in record numbers, taking out billions ofdollars in cash each year.

In years past, many saw their homes as a shelter of safety, yet today, they are (more than ever before) willing to borrow against theequity owned in their homes to further their investment portfolios, get out of debt, send their children to university, makeimprovements to their home, or even boost their RRSPcontributions. Where home equity was once sat upon, today it issomething to be tapped out and used to one’s advantage.

While tapping the equity in your home can be a good idea, youshould do so with caution and understand any of the possibleconsequences. The best thing you can do is consult a licensedmortgage professional and financial planner to discussopportunities to make your home’s equity work for you.

My friend Lynn told me about this recipe. I am growing herkale plants in my garden this year. They have grown to besmall kale trees, absolutely huge! The beauty of growingkale yourself, you can keep cutting off kale leaves allsummer and fall and they just keep re-growing. Kale is aleafy green vegetable, rich in anti-oxidants, minerals andvitamins. You can easily buy it at any green grocer, bag itup and refrigerate it. Add the leaves into your soups, stews, scrambled eggs, even dehydrate the leaves into kale chips. This minestrone soup is quickly prepared For thewhite beans, either soak and boil cannelini beans until they are tender, or just use canned cannelini beans. Eitherway works fine. This soup is enjoyed by all ages. Try it yourself! Thanks Lynn for sharing!

INGREDIENTS:1- 1/2 to 2 cups of finely chopped kale leaves (stems removed)1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil (try Sharyn's Pantry Sicilian extra virgin olive oilfor the very best in flavour)2 large cloves of garlic3 cups of cooked cannelini beans (or use 2 cans, rinsed and drained cannelini beans)2- 1/2 cups chicken or vegetable stock

METHOD:Preparation time 30 minutes. Serves 3 to 4 nicely.-Rinse the kale leaves under cold water. Cut off the tough stems and save them for your compost or vegetable stock pot. Roll up the leaves and cutthem in a chiffonade (thin ribbons). Set them aside.-In a 4 quart soup pot, heat the olive oil and saute the garlic for just a minute over medium heat. Add half of the cooked beans and half of thestock.-With the remaining beans and stock, puree them in a blender or food processor along with the tomato paste and the fresh sage leaves.-Stir this pureed mixture back into the soup pot. Season the soup with the salt and pepper to taste.-Now add the chopped kale leaves into the soup and simmer for about 10 minutes or until the kale has wilted.-Add the lemon juice and enough water to thin the soup down to your desired consistency.-Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.-Serve the soup piping hot and garnish with a little freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Pass the crusty bread and ENJOY!FR

True Art is in the eyeof the ChequeHolder!I love a good debate, not an argumentbut a true defending of ideas andprinciples. There is nothing more funthan to discuss with your friends andfellow artists the merit of this style or

that. What I have a problem with is intolerance! You know whatI am referring to the person who no matter what you say believesyou are wrong not for any other reason than they don’t happento agree. Not agreeing is not even the real problem it’s theintolerant attitude toward anyone who opposes them, often tothe level of discrediting the person who opposes them. This iswhere I have difficulties.

I am of the opinion that everyone is entitled to their opinion, good, bad or indifferent. If you don’t like mine that is just finewith me, we can agree to disagree but let’s keep an open mindabout the grey area between. Politicians love to practiceintolerance. They often make up reasons why their opponent iswrong even if their logic is flawed just to discredit them and wehave come to expect it from them. When it happens betweenartists then it is sad; this is because the nature of art is one of selfexpression and to simply dismiss that art on grounds of style, subject or not suppose to be done that way, strikes at the Artist’svery core.

An example of this is my daughter is studying English Literature atUniversity and although her professors for the most part areeager to hear the opinions of their students with regard to storywriting she does have one professor that is not. She believes thatmodern literature such as “The Hunger Games” and “Harry Potter”are written by untalented writers serving an unsophisticatedstory line to uneducated morons or something like that. Her levelof intolerance to the modern storyteller not only affects the moralof her students but their grade average if they dare to challengeher. I say that true art is in the eye of the cheque holder. Althoughthe authors of modern literature may find her attitude offensive,it certainly isn’t hurting their bank accounts.

Modern visual art is often the target of the intolerant. They havethe opinion that unless it looks almost photographic in technicalskill it is inferior art. I used to feel this way until I tried to paint inthe Abstract Expressionist style and quickly realized that actuallymore painting skill was required to work with the abstract designthan realism as the design will fail quickly and absolutely if nothandled correctly. There will be those that will argue that andwould accept a challenge but there are also those that wouldrather just bad mouth the abstract artists to anyone who wouldlisten. “They paint that way because they can’t really paint” or myfavorite “Gorilla’s and two year olds could do better”.

This is a disease that flourishes in every art form but when itcomes from your peers it can be difficult to fight. When thishappens what you need to remember is this; if you enjoy the artyou are making, who cares what they think; if you are challengedand move forward, so what if they don’t like it; if what you are

doing is unique and not yet accepted into the main stream, fantastic! Artis a business of the different, the unique and the ground breaking and ifyou are doing what everyone does just because they say you should, wellthen I would be worried.

In closing keep this in mind: Beauty is in the eye of the cheque holder;storytelling writers make the most money; unique voices are sought after;safe little plays and films don’t become blockbusters and dancers who justtap dance are a dime a dozen. Now go forth and upset the intolerant!

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS

The WayI Am

I’m often askedwhat kind ofmusic I write. That’s always avery loadedquestion withno simpleanswer. “It’s notreally country,”I say. In fact,it’s not countryat all. There arehints of it, aswell as hints ofrhythm andblues and jazz, and a couple ofthe songs vergeon rock.

Probably the greatest influence in my writing - and more than likelyfor any girl who has ever picked up a guitar - is folk. But I certainlywouldn’t call my music folk either. Some of my songs have evenbeen described as having a European flavour.

If it’s all of those things, but neither in particular, what is it then?

If you ask anyone who knows my music, their reaction usually isquite the same. They don’t know, and truth be told, neither do I. Igrew up in a country-music-loving household, in the 60s and 70s,and I can’t really remember a time when there wasn’t a “hurtin’tune” echoing through the house. You know, Patsy Cline and MerleHaggard among others of that ilk. There’s no denying its influencein some of my songs, but I would certainly not be called a countryartist.

My taste in music and artist influence, has changed and evolved overmy life and remains as diversified as music genres get: Elvis, CarlySimon, Fleetwood Mac, k.d. Lang, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge,Heart, Sting, Carol King, Bonnie Raitt, Amy Winehouse ... If you canpossibly find a genre in that, then that’s me.

I’ve been trying to give my music a name - folk-rock fusion/mock-country/adult contemporary alternative - but nothing really fits.Does it need a name? Maybe not, and that’s ok too, unless I’m askedto tick a music genre box on Reverb Nation.

What I can tell you is that I write about life and love and hope andall that’s good in the world. Sometimes I write about pain, andsadness, but plenty of happiness too. I write from the heart and feeleternally grateful to be able to do so, and to share it with anyonewho’ll listen.

My new CD, The Way I Am, took about three years and the help of agroup of wonderful musicians/friends, who have generously gonethe distance with me. My heart is full of them.

A couple of the guys and I will be previewing the CD at the WinterWindup Merchant Market on November 18, at the Civic Complex andthen, I’m putting the band back together for a one-night-only CDrelease Concert.

The band (featuring some of the best musicians in town - RodRobillard on lead guitar, Greg Deruchie on guitar, Jim Sharp ondrums, Bobby Tessier on bass, and Marc Carrière on flute andpercussion) and I will be performing The Way I Am in its entirety atthe St Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre (at the PowerDam) on Saturday, November 24, at 7:30pm (doors open at 7:00), onthe bank of the beautiful river. You can hear a sample of the tunesand get more info at www.facebook.com/RoxanneDelageMusic.

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS

Invite in the WIND!Just as the wind from Sandy blew into our region last evening, catapulting me forward as I drove down the 401, newopportunities have been blowing into my life and business. It is agreat time in life, especially when you are open to what is

possible rather than planning all the details. Of course I set the scene when Jimand I sat down mid-September and created our Strategic Attraction Plan (SAP) for theupcoming year.

Strategic AttractionFor years clients and colleagues have asked me about running a business and what makesa business successful. I simply say, Strategic Attraction Planning. I know you have all heardof a Strategic Plan, something that is considered an essential ingredient for any successfulbusiness. A secret, I’ve never had one ! What I have instead is my SAP. So what’s thedifference? Strategic Attraction as the name suggests, is about engaging the Law ofAttraction strategically in your business. It has four sections to it:

1. The qualities and characteristics of your perfect customer/client2. What makes you, as a business person/entrepreneur ‘tick’ – why you do

what you do3. What you want – we call this clarity, setting your business intentions4. Who do you BE – understanding that everything you want from life

begins within you and your energy

That’s different than a regular Strategic Plan!

Intentions and Goals

Intentions and goals are frequently confused. A simple explanation is that an intention is openended. It states what you want yet is not fixed on a specific outcome. Example: I am attracting myperfect healthy body. Notice that you have not specified how this will happen or what youspecifically mean by that. You are leaving the solution open ended and as a result, give yourselfpermission to attract something you may not have considered otherwise.

Goals on the other hand specify an outcome. For example: I plan to lose 10 pounds, begin the newdiet and go to the gym 3 nights a week. You have already decided on the solutions and fix yourattention to the scales, what you eat and working out. Boring !

In business I have found that intentionality is far more powerful than goals. That’s not to say I don’thave any goals as most of the projects I work on have deadlines and deliverables. At the same timemy intentions have opened up possibilities for me I never would have considered. You have to lovethat.

Who You BEWe all have a slightly skewed view of who we are. I have long been a believer of taking everyopportunity to learn more about ME and to understand my strengths and what makes m unique.Knowing these things about yourself helps you to engage those strengths and focus on what youdo well. Too often you do the opposite – you focus on improving your weaknesses. Trust me thisdoes not work. Whatever you focus on grows! Don’t you want to grow your strengths?

So where do you start; what can you do. One of the tools I love, and which recently blew into ourlives is a learning system called Lumina. It offers you the opportunity to complete a self-assessmentquestionnaire which then generates a Spark Portrait which is all about you. You learn about thefour colour energies and how you play in them, the eight aspects and twenty-fourqualities of personality and, most importantly, your strengths. Of course the addedbenefit is that, the more you learn about you, the more you learn about others.

Invite in the WIND

For me the WIND signifies Welcoming In New Discovery. Investing in yourself, is aninvestment in your life, your work and if you are like me, your business. With thewind comes new air to breathe, new knowledge of self and of course new lifeopportunities. I invite you to stand outside, open your arms, feel yourself fly in the WIND, andimagine where your journey is headed. Who knows where you might land next?

A weekly look at racing fromboth sides of the 1000 IslandsThere isn’t much racing news to report this week, as theoff-season is beginning to set in for most race teams. The Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series will headsouth for their final race of the 2012 season at theWorld Finals at the DIRT Track at Charlotte MotorSpeedway in North Carolina this coming weekend.

Just a couple of tracks were in operation this past weekend, as FiveMile Point Speedway near Binghamton, New York hosted their season finale RoCevent. Danny Johnson was the race winner and series champion finishing aheadof Jimmy Phelps, Stewart Friesen, Rick Laubach and Pat Ward. The only othertrack in action was Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland, and after a day ofqualifying on Saturday, their features were rained out on Sunday and postponeduntil November 11th.

As mentioned earlier, there will be people traveling to Charlotte, North Carolinathis week for the World Finals. This three-day event hosts the final points racesfor the Big Block Modifieds, World of Outlaw Late Models and World of OutlawSprint Cars. With the big storm approaching, I wish everyone safe travels, andthe best of luck once they reach their destination. I was able to attend thisevent back in 2010, and wish I was going again this year.

I may attend Black Rock Speedway on Saturday for their final race of 2012.They host the annual Empire Finale $6000 to win event for the Modifieds. Ihaven’t been to Black Rock in quite a few years, so if the weather co-operatesI may make the four-hour trip to the Finger Lakes area of New York State.

The final racing event of my season will take place on November 16th to 18thin Syracuse for the 33rd annual National Parts Peddler Trade Show andAuction at the New York State Fairgrounds. Although this show marks theend of a season for some, it also begins a brand new season for many of thevendors as they display their 2013 cars and equipment. The event will kickoff on Friday, November 16th as they open the show to the public at noon.Friday night, everyone will be treated to the sounds of Johnny Cash as TerryLee Goffey performs live on stage. Goffey is nationally-known and is theultimate Johnny Cash tribute artist. The show will resume at 10:00am onSaturday morning for another day of buying and selling, and will close out on

Joe,The kitchen in my house is about twenty years old. Ithas nice oak cabinets but they are rather dark anddated. I would like to refinish them in a morecontemporary colour but I don’t know how to go aboutstripping them. I have contacted local cabinet refacers, they say they don’t do that and then they sent me toyou. What is the easiest way to maintain my existingkitchen but modernize it with a more contemporarycolour and make it look like new? Thanks for your help,Jeff

Thanks for the question Jeff. This is a good one that has crossed the minds of manypeople. I have been asked numerous times bycustomers and the answer is always the same: it comesdown to time or money. If you don’t have one you besthave a lot of the other. Stripping wooden furnishings ofany kind is a time consuming and delicate process andcabinetry is no different. Any intricate millwork willinvariably require hours and hours of painstakingsolvent and scraper work. One avenue that I mightsuggest you try (and I haven’t actually tried this myselfso I can’t vouch for the success of it - but I know it willwork) is abrasive blasting. Using a compressed airdevice, sand or other natural abrasives are blown at anobject at high speeds to blast off paint and finishes. Now since most or all abrasives are harder than woodyou will have to exercise a great deal of caution whenattacking your cabinets with this method. Irecommend a few trial runs on the backs of the doors toget the feel for the stripping ability of your particularabrasive. Besides sand - which is the traditional andleast expensive abrasive available - there are a variety tochoose from ranging in coarseness and hardness.Other available abrasives include soda, aluminumoxide, glass beads, walnut shells, and salt; basicallyanything that is fine enough to spray out a nozzle withair. Oak is about as hard as domestic woods get so youwill have a fairly good shot at stripping them downwithout damaging them. You will still have to invest afair bit of time sanding them smooth afterwards andthen staining and refinishing them, but the blasting willsave you a lot of time with the details. So this is a happymedium between time and money. I wish you the bestin your endeavour. If you stick to it, it will be completebefore you know it and you’ll have the pride of a projectyou completed that you get to admire every day.All the best, Joe

The group which consists of 70 members (many of them seen in the photoabove) started in Cornwall in 2002 with founding members Joan Bray, DianeDaoust and Kelly Picket. They meet on the last Wednesday of each month atSt. Matthews Lutheran Church in Cornwall and gather to make quilts. Since2002 they have made and donated 24,011 quilts to cancer patients and thispast October alone they made a total of 28 quilts. Pictured in the secondphoto above is the Executive. A bit of history: Victoria Quilts was established in memory of Victoria AnnMorrison, a cancer patient and quilt maker. She made over 100 “Love Quilts”in her short lifetime. She spoke of being cold during her chemotherapytreatments and with her in mind, Victoria Quilts Canada was founded in 1998.
