OPERATION ANGEL Our holiday service project, Operation Angel, begins December 4th. In lieu of a holiday gift for a teacher or staff member, students are encouraged to make a contribution to Good-
Works, a Chapin-based home repair and improvement organi-zation. For a minimum of $1 each, students will be given two angels—one to hang on our school tree and the other to present to the teacher/staff member being honored.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Winter Break Dec. 17th - Jan. 1st
EL MERCADO ¡Viene… el mercado LMES! It’s almost here! The market begins
Monday, December 3rd and runs through Friday, Decem-ber 7th. During this week, when students come to their Spanish class, they will be visiting el mercado to spend the pesos they earn from our classroom incentive pro-gram, Pesos por participar. If you have “stuff” to contribute but haven’t had a chance to bring it in, we are still seeking donations of items for
our market – from small trinkets/toys that the children can “purchase” for themselves to larger toys/games/stuffed animals for donations to GOoDworks of Chapin.

LA FIESTA
This year, la fiesta en la clase de español will be held during the week of April 29th in the spirit of
Cinco de mayo. Each class’s fiesta will take place during their usual time for Spanish class that week.
As for la fiesta, the students will again be able to participate in fun activities, register for raffle prizes, and purchase snacks and “stuff” with their pesos. Once again we will offer the stu-dents the opportunity to help others by using their pesos to “purchase” donations for less fortunate children right here in our district. In these difficult economic times, it is even more important for our own children to understand the importance of helping others who have less.

PASS tests ELA an Math for all 3rd-5th LMES students. All 4th graders take social studies and science test, also. In 3rd and 5th grades, students take either Social Stud-ies or Science. PASS Writing was given to all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in March. Students’ PASS results are returned to the school in the summer. Results are reported for each student as either Exemplary, Met or Not Met.

“Parents and families are the first and most important teachers. If families teach a love of learning, it can make all the difference in the world to our children,” Richard W. Riley
Ten Ways to Keep Kids Learning Through Summer
1. Enroll your child in the public library summer reading
program. 2. Have children keep a journal on what interested them
most as you travel. 3. While traveling have students use a map or GPS to
compute miles, the cost of gas, possible alternate routes, and the advantages of each route.
4. Have students write letters or post cards to family and friends.
5. Develop a service project (pulling weeds for elderly neighbors, collecting canned goods for food bank, etc.) Have the child plan the activity and make the contacts to get started.
6. Practice addition, subtraction and multiplication facts.
7. Help prepare a family meal from developing a gro-cery list to cleaning the kitchen.
8. Play board games like Scrabble, Chess, or Checkers. 9. Leave written clues about the day or week’s activities
and have children solve the. 10. Travel Abroad at Home - Find the country selected
to visit on the map. Prepare foods from that country for snack or a meal. Look information about the country. Listen to music from that country.
