Thursday 3 March, 8pm Boys on the Edge Ever wanted to take a look inside someone’s head and find out what makes them tick? Why they behave the way they do? Why they NEVER put the milk back in the fridge?

After the success of Girls on the Verge in October 2010, it’s the turn of the boys. These work-in-progress monologues by Alison Carr, Laura Lindow and Bridget Deane take a peek into the minds of three young men on the edge of adulthood and discover a variety of bizarre, moving, disturbing and slightly grubby things.

Thursday 14 April, 8pm Scratch Night Live Theatre and The Empty Space join forces to host Live’s very first Scratch Night. This is the audiences’ chance to help shape new pieces of theatre. Companies and practitioners from around the country will head to Newcastle to try out brand new ideas and show snippets of their work-in-progress – which might include comedy, promenade pieces, something site-specific – it’s a night where anything and everything goes. After the show move to the bar where YOUR feedback is required on what you’ve just seen. Everything from positive praise to constructive criticism is welcome. Come scratch with us...

Big Picture: Short Cuts They say a picture paints a thousand words. In Short Cuts this proverb is being tested as writers are set the challenge of writing a short play inspired by the winning image from our photography competition. The best pieces will be performed alongside brilliant short plays from around the world. Jump through the photo frame and explore plays that are visual, plays that surprise and plays that pop up where you least expect them.

Saturday 22 January, 10am to 12pmVerity Bargate Award Writers Workshop Soho Theatre’s national competition for the best new play by an emerging writer, the Verity Bargate Award, is in full swing.  Searching for a new play that stands out from the crowd Sarah Dickenson, Soho Theatre’s Senior Reader, is heading to Newcastle to run a workshop for playwrights of all levels of experience.

With fresh eclectic exercises and lively discussion guaranteed to help writers explore new ideas the workshop will cover triggers; the building blocks of character, story, style and structure as well as the practicalities of rewriting, deadlines and where, when and how to send out work.

Sarah will provide participants with an introduction to Soho Theatre plus top tips, advice and information on the 2011 competition where the winner will receive £5,000 and a chance to have their work performed at Soho Theatre. For more details about the award visit www.sohotheatre.com
