We are fortunate to have services offered to Goodyear residents that other cities do not have. Bulk trash collection is one of

many services. Rather than schedule a trip and pay money to take large unwanted items and trash to the landfill or dump,we are able to simply place themcurbside for bulk trash pickup. This valuable service is offered in order to provide residents with a waste option; however, bulk items cannot exceed two cubic yards, excluding furniture and appliances. Residents must ensure that ALL bulk items left out can be safely removed by two men.

Bulk trash must be left in the street, next to your curb in front of your property. All items should be placed away from electrical boxes, cable boxes, mailboxes, poles, water meters and existing landscape. Remember not to place your items out too early, as it has the potential to create a mess throughout the community, ultimately distracting from the natural beauty of Estrella. Residents are asked to place their bulk trash outside after 6:00 p.m. on the day prior to collection or by 6:00 a.m. on the day of collection. Any debris that may be remaining after pick up is the responsibility of the resident to tidy up. Depending on the neighborhood in which you reside, bulk

collectionisthefirstMonday,TuesdayorWednesdayof every month. If you are curious as to which day bulk trash will be collected, you can visit http://webmap.goodyearaz.gov/webmap3/webmap3.aspx?XML=sanitation.xml.

If you have any additional questions regarding bulk trash collection, please contact City of Goodyear Sanitation at 623-932-3010.

LANDSCAPE>>>snippets

Estrella Landscaping Update & Lawn TipsBy Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.

The crews have been busy completing the scheduled improvement to the common area landscaping throughout Estrella including the

granite top dressing in selected areas. We are also working on improving the turf in some areas where it hashaddifficultygrowing in thepastbyamendingthe soil and seeding.

With bermuda grass growth in full swing, now is a great time to remove some of the excess thatch in your lawn. If you walk on your lawn and it feels spongy you may have thatch build up or layers of dead bermuda grass in your lawn. One of the best ways to remove this thatch is by using a power rake. This machine (that can be rented at most any home center) will remove the dead layer of grass, which will help with the health and longevity of your lawn.

July is when we expect summer rains and we should

take advantage of these rains by spraying the granite areas in our landscape with a pre-emergent herbicide to help prevent weeds. The herbicide requires rain or watering to help it penetrate the soil to get where the weed seed is to prevent it from germinating. By following these steps you can be on your way to a lower maintenance landscape.

The summer rains bring the potential for storm runoff that could damage your property. Take some time to inspect the drainage systems or washes on your property and clear any obstacles that may prevent water from draining away from your home.

Lastly, do not forget to adjust your irrigation controllers. With increased humidity plants do not use as much water as they did in the dryer months. This will help prevent overwatering and potential plant loss.

Three seventh grade Estrella Mountain Elementary students and friends decided to make

this summer the start of their new landscaping business. It all started with helping out a few neighbors with some of their landscaping just to make a little extra money, but now the popularity of these young men has grown throughout the community. Michael, Thomas and Austin will help with the following:

• picking up dog poop

• Walking dogs

• skimming pools

• pulling weeds

• picking up trash

• Washing cars

As the temperature gets hotter, you can count on the Estrella Helpers to do the things you need done around your house. These young men hope the next time you need some chores done around your home, you will call:

The rent Collector by Camron WrightSubmitted by Estrella Book Club

The Rent Collector by Camron Wright is one of those books that you’re glad you came across. With many of our books, if someone in the

Estrella Book Club hadn’t suggested it, we may never have known of it, let alone read it. July’s book falls into this special category. Though it is a novel, The Rent Collector reads like non-fiction. Thesetting is real;the types of situations are real; the author researched the subject and even included actual photos. Thus, this gripping novel reads like an autobiography. There is humor; there is pathos. Most of all there is a good story.

Ki Lim and Sang Ly live, if live is the right word to describe a three-sided cardboard box, in a municipal waste dump in an area of Cambodia called Stung Meanchey. If that weren’t bad enough, they have a young, ill child. As bad as where they live is, there are plenty of people who would like a chance to reside there, which means when the monthly rent is collected, when it’s short, eviction is almost certain to follow.

Find out what happens when the rent collector sees a book that Sang Ly has found on one of her scavenging hunts. There is that and a whole lot more

to uncover and discuss about The Rent Collector

Estrella Book Club meets Wednesday, July 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Starpointe Residents Club. Hope you’ll join us. Call Nina Adair, 623-810-3494, if you have questions.

CITY

As water becomes a more valuable resource throughout the Grand

Canyon State, I am proud to say Goodyear is being very proactive by taking care of its current demands and forming a foundation for future growth.

A big part of how we will move forward with our water resources comes from the hard work of the 11-member Goodyear Water Planning Committee. Most comprised of residents led by Committee Chairman Mario Columbia and Vice Chairman Jason Battern, these individuals dedicated many evening hours over the past nine months to develop a recommendation on how the city can continue providing quality water service for customers south of Interstate 10. The proposed plans will not affect water customers living north of I-10 served by private companies such as Liberty Utilities Co.

The Committee recently concluded to recommend a five-year capital improvement plan (CIP) forinfrastructure improvements ($38 million for water operations and $19 million for wastewater) and a utility rate that covers these and other costs. The upgrades will minimize the impact should there be an emergency, drought or interruption of service.

The City Council and I reviewed the recommendation and will vote on it in late September. In the meantime, customers are encouraged to review it and comment by visiting www.goodyearaz.gov/watercommittee or calling 623-882-7896.

Because of the Committee’s hard work, the City now is poised to make water system improvements it was unable to make during the recession. The plan calls for the replacement of three water production wells, the rehabilitation of three others and possibly the construction of three strategically-placed new ones. Improvements also need to be made to the wastewater treatment plants and service lines.

Althoughafinalutilityrateplanhasnotbeenapprovedyet and isn’t scheduled to go into effect until early next year, I am happy to say that with the help of these dedicated residents and customers, an important

step in the process is complete. With the Committee reaching an agreement, all city utility customers will reap the rewards of continued quality service and the most important resource our residents can have – water.

A patriotic tradition is set to go off in the City of Goodyear – The Star Spangled 4th of July eventwithanold-fashionedflavor.

This year, the City of Goodyear will host its 4th of July event from 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4 at Goodyear Ballpark, 1933 S. Ballpark Way.

The event will feature a pie and hot dog eating contest, live music by the popular local band Party Crashers, a corn hole tournament (with awards), a lot of fun and fireworks, of course. Inflatable bounce houses andwater slides will be on hand for the kids for a nominal fee.

Admission to the event, which is being held at the ballpark for the seventh year, is free and open to the public. Parking also is free. Thousands are expected toattendtheevent, sooverflowparkingisavailable

“Just like the 4th of July events in past years, this year’s event promises to be a lot of fun for people of all ages,” said Debbie Diveney, Supervisor of Business Operations for Goodyear Ballpark. “You bring the family, we’ll do the cooking.”

Motivating Kids – Four Ways to Get Active!

As we approach the dreaded hot days of summer, it can be challenging to motivate your kids to get active.

Even more so, getting children to be active in today’s electronic-filledworldcanseemalmostimpossibleattimes.Videogames,high-definitionandsmartTVs,smartphones and computers can be found in every household. Certainly there are benefits to havingquick access to an abundance of information, but there in an increasing concern about the effects of too much screen time on young minds and bodies.

Studies have shown that as children become more removed from being active outside and around nature, their own psychological and physical well-being can be altered. So what actions can we take as parents, teachers and childcare providers? How can we inspire our youth to get active and remain active, which in return will help develop a happy and healthy internal environment? Here are some motivators that are found to be most important!inspiRE YoUR KiDs Be adventurous. Try something new. Be curious. Ask questions. Learn things together. When we are enthusiastic and excited about life, we simultaneously encourage our kids to do the same. As parents, we have an enormous responsibility to be a positive example to our kids and provide a compassionate, loving and inspiring environment. Kids are extremely impressionable and observant, and often will mimic our behaviors. So why not be open to adventure and

allow your inner child to come out and explore with your child?

MAKE TiME FoR UnsTRUCTURED oUTDooR plAY Play in the sand, lie in the grass, take a walk, get dirty! During the school year, kids spend their days in a very structured environment without any real free time. Undoubtedly, it is important for children to receive an education, but there needs to be a balance. After being plugged in at school, allow your kids to unplug outside with absolutely no agenda.

liMiT ElECTRoniC UsE Establish some rules for the electronics in your household - and not just for your kids, but for you as well. Choose to leave your phone, iPad, iPod, whatever it is, at home and get outside! Provide a time frame for your kids’ use of electronic devices and make sure you stick to it. Kids respond well to consistency.

TRAVEl Traveling doesn’t have to mean a big budget. In fact, you don’t have to travel to exotic destinations to enjoy all the beauty our earth has to offer. Look for parks, forests, fields, andlakesthatarenearbyandmakeaday trip out of it. Pack a picnic, bring some games, andenjoyadayfilledwithnature! It’seasytoforgetthat traveling to a nearby lake can allow for adventure and exploration.

The first day of school in Estrella is Wednesday, August 5, 2015. To learn more about Estrella’s great schools, visit the “Schools” page on Estrella.com.

It’s that time of year when we start thinking about the kids going back to school. Nothing can be better than a neighborhood where the schools are close to home especially if the schools are top notch. Estrella is that kind of place where kids are raised within a close-knit community environment and families see each other at school year after year while their children make lasting friendships. Everyone has a stake in the quality of their education because they care. As a result, Estrella’s schools provide children an excellent education with a personal touch. Below are just a few of the exciting things happening in Estrella’s schools.

• Laptops to be provided for all Estrella Foothills High School students as a part of the “Get Connected” program. When students show up to registration this year they will be presented with a Dell computer to be used for the duration of the school year. Estrella Foothills High School is committed to ensuring every student has the same access to tools and technology that will improve learning and facilitate the ability for teachers to expand their curriculum. RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: ESTRELLA MOUNTAIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL – SHARON MARINE

For the past 17 years Estrella has been home to resident and school principal, Sharon Marine, her husband and their three Yorkshire Terriers. Marine is the Estrella Mountain Elementary School Principal, whose vast experience in education includes 13 years of teaching. From teaching, Marine moved to the administrative side and became the assistant principal at Freedom Elementary before returning to Estrella as principal, a position she has now held for six years.

During her time at Estrella Mountain Elementary, Marine has watched her students grow, mature and become responsible citizens. It is one of the things that causes her to cherish her time living and working in such a tight-knit community. And while the community has grown significantly, she still feels that it has retained its hometown feel.

“Estrella has a wonderful family atmosphere that we enjoy so much,” said Marine. “Being in a neighborhood where I can go for leisurely walks with my husband, and have it be both friendly and safe is truly one of the most important reasons that we have lived here so long.”

Esteemed principal and resident, caring wife…and Olympic athlete? That’s right, Marine spends her summers playing competitive softball and will be taking her skills to the 2015 National Senior Games presented by the United States Olympics Committee. Marine will represent Team Arizona in the Senior Games this July in Minnesota. Her active lifestyle, a job that always keeps her on her toes and years of practice have been the ultimate preparation for the Olympics. Marine is a true Estrella hero who will represent the community with pride.

Join us in wishing Marine luck as she goes for gold at the 2015 National Senior Games. For those interested in learning more about Marine and Estrella Mountain Elementary School please visit http://estrella.liberty.k12.az.us.
