I heard a saying recently that it is no wonder that the word UNITY is part of

the word COMMUNITY. It is because of opportunities such as partnering with the City of Goodyear to bring the C.E.R.T training here to Estrella for our

residents to train on how to respond and assist their families and neighbors in the event of an emergency that creates unity.

Every Tuesday and Thursday night for six weeks, three hours each session, I had the honor to spend time with 23 very special residents here in Estrella and all of the wonderful volunteers that teach this course.

In my day to day work, I have to manage the sticks and stones of Estrella. But the better part of my job is being able to get involved in the community and the wonderful residents that live here. I have to say, that these 23 residents that I trained with for the past several weeks are not just residents to me but now my friends and of course team mates should a disaster occur in our neighborhood.

If only more knew or experienced what we did in this training, it would give you a sense of just how united this community is and how your neighbors are here for you in the event of a catastrophic emergency.

We all worked together as a team or teams to put out fires, assess damage to buildings, assess and facilitate triage, perform minor first aid and how to search and rescue people from various situations. Not only was this a very serious and beneficial training course, it was a lot of fun!

I want to thank our instructors and leaders, as well as the residents, now friends and team mates for the opportunity to be part of this commUNITY.

McDonald’s - A New Addition to the Estrella CommunityBy Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager

O n July 23, 2013, the Estrella community was enlightened about

the presentation presented by Derrick & Darian Mellon, brothers who own seventeen West Valley McDonald’s and will open Estrella’s McDonald’s this fall. Most people think of McDonald’s as a place to eat that offers convenience, variety and value, which the Mellon brothers want people to remember about McDonald’s, but there is more to McDonald’s that most people do not know.

• Community commitment and economic impact

• Food quality, choice and nutrition

• People and opportunity

As the biggest and most recognized quick-serve restaurant in the industry, McDonald’s has become a “poster child” for many causes big and small. The Estrella McDonald’s is:

• Focused on local communities and lending a caring hand to our neighbors

• Dedicated to providing new menu choices, nutrition information and food quality that Estrella demands

• Committed to providing opportunities for their employees

• Ready to serve the local community and contributing to charitable causes

The Mellon brothers bring a long history

>>> mANAGer’S meSSAGe

and commitment to the tax base and economic development of the West Valley as follows:

• In Goodyear they employ over 250 employees

• Local sales over $10 million last year

• Huge share of the sales pays in state, county and local taxes

• The tax revenues grow and sustain the communities in which they do business

In addition they support many charities including the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Derrick & Darian Mellon are committed to support the Estrella community for many generations to come, so please stop by their new facility and welcome them to our community.

It’s Time for the Estrella Annual MeetingBy Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager

I t’s that time of year again; It’s time for the Estrella Annual Meeting. This meeting is not

only a business meeting, but a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the Estrella Community over the past year. It is bound to be quite a celebration with a Big Top theme and so many things for the community to be proud of.

The evening will begin with a vendor reception starting at 5:30pm. Community partners, vendors, and friends of the community will gather in front of

the performing Arts Center at Estrella Foothills High School to meet and greet with residents. The Estrella Foothills High School Culinary Class will be offering tastings of some of their fantastic culinary creations. There will be games to help you win more raffle tickets to increase your odds of winning one of the over 50 prizes we will be giving away later in the evening.

The meetings portion of the evening will begin with the Luke Air Force Base Honor Guard presenting the flag and a member of the Goodyear Police Department leading us in the National Anthem.

>>> mANAGer’S meSSAGe

Then the Estrella Community Association and the Villages of Estrella Community Association will hold their business meeting. This meeting will also be the final step in electing two new resident board members for The Villages Community Association. The nominating committee made up of resident volunteers accepted applications from residents interested in running for this volunteer position in July and August and the ballots were sent out to each voting member of the VCA.

After the business meetings and the election of the new resident board members, there will be community updates including a financial report. There will also be updates from the management company, CCMC, as well as, the Developer, Newland Communities. We will also celebrate the many accomplishments of all our resident volunteers. From the residents that serve on Estrella’s five Committees that have dedicated numerous hours to help ensure that this community is functioning as successfully as possible to the event volunteers that make sure that the residents of Estrella have a fun way to come together and connect. Every resident volunteer is important and has contributed to the community’s accomplishments this year. I hope to see everyone on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:30 pm applauding your fellow residents for their hard work and celebrating all the great things that are happening in your community. Plus there will be over $4,000 worth of donated prizes given away and you have to be present to win!

Art: A Path to Creative DiscoveryBy Phyllis Hill, CDP, Senior Consultant, The Creative Arts Academy

P icasso, Rembrandt, Monet . . . When many of us think of art, we may think of Monet’s painting “Impression Sunrise,” hanging on a museum wall, or a sculpture

such as Di Vinci’s “David,” on display. The mention of art may evoke images of marble pillars, ancient expressions of periods of time, odd shapes of clay or metal reflective of a more modern twist. But art is more than an end product on display; art is a path to creative discovery.

Most aspiring artists will never attain the fame of Picasso and Rembrandt, but they do not let this stop them from engaging their creative value, for the creative process inspires the soul, entertains the mind and encourages artistic expression. Expressions of creativity are limitless, from paper to canvas, brick walls to drywall, from wood trusses to water-filled shapes, flowers to planets. Creativity spurs us down the path of discovery and broadens our relationship with texture, color, time, light, sound, volume, size, and shape. Art brings all of these elements together to increase our understanding and enhance our experience in the world around us.

You can engage your creative value. Yes, you have creativity eagerly waiting to draw you into a delightful experience of discovery! No need for reserve or embarrassment; the discovery of creativity will inspire your own style of expression. It is the process of discovery that holds great value.

There are many opportunities to engage your creative side right here in Estrella. The Creative Arts Academy provides classes for those who dare to discover. Approaching this fall is Coffee and Canvas, September 13, 2013 and Family Canvas, November 2, 2013. Visit www.createu.org for class registration, time and place or send an email to [email protected] for more information. Come and experience the warmth of community in an inspirational setting over a delightful cup of coffee and discover your creative value!

The Holidays are right around the corner and the stores are stocked with festive decorations. Given the wide range of worship preference and ethnic backgrounds of the residents of Estrella, the types of decorations to be displayed will not be regulated. However, the Design Review Committee has established periods of time that such decorations can be displayed. Seasonal decorations may be displayed from November 1 to January 31, and no earlier than one (1) week before and no later than one (1) week after any nationally recognized holiday not falling within the previously mentioned months. We are excited to see what holiday decorating ideas our residents have for us to enjoy.

The Community is Calling You! By Sharon Thunstedt, Administrative Coordinator

In order to continue to maintain Estrella’s premier status as one of the best places to live in the valley, a bit of your time is needed. Why should you become a volunteer in

your community? Here are some really good reasons:

• Protect your self interests. Protect your property values and maintain the quality of life.

• Give back. Repay a little of what has been done for you.

• Advance your career. Build your personal resume by including community service.

• Have some fun. It’s fun accomplishing good things with your neighbors.

• Get educated. Learn a new skill while helping others.

• Earn recognition. Your contributions will be recognized and celebrated.

Everyone has something to contribute. Whether it’s expertise in a given profession or a personal experience, the ideas and suggestions that are generated are all valued. Serving on a committee not only benefits the community as a whole but it builds relationships and establishes a sense of pride in your community.

Now is the time to step up and volunteer. A description of each committee is provided below:

• The Budget and Finance Committee reviews financials, capital reserve contributions, and recommends an annual budget to the Board of Directors

• The Social Committee recommends monthly activities and assists our Lifestyle Director with programming those events

• The Trails Committee is instrumental in the development and maintenance of the many pedestrian and cycling trails within Estrella

• The Communications Committee assists the management company with website communications, newspaper communications, as well as other communication based functions serving the community

• The Landscape Committee assists the management company with issues relating to Common Area landscaping within Estrella

As plants age, their metabolism begins to slow and their ability to produce new growth decreases. A process of rejuvenation helps to promote new growth and blooming

which occurs on new generation branches and stems. As part of this process, older growth must be selectively removed to allow sunlight to penetrate to the bud’s that have laid in dormancy, waiting for an opportunity to grow. This process entails removal of about 20% of the plant material away and cleaning the built-up organic material from around the base of the plant; this allows air, water and nutrients to be better utilized by the plant. As this may seem to be a drastic process, and the immediate impact may seem to be severe, it is a necessary process to bring older, mature plants back to healthy growth and renewed vigor. Many factors are going to affect the rate of recovery of the plants treated: shade, current health, time of year and species of plant. This pruning technique provides for a much fuller plant, more prolific bloom, longevity, and a more mature look to the plant pallet.

New Growth & Blooming even in the Fall & WinterBy Jim Potts, Horticulturist - Four Peaks Landscape

Typically we start this process towards the end of November, beginning with the Red Bird of Paradise as they are nearing the end of their blooming cycle, and getting ready to go into their rest cycle (as are most of our plants here in Estrella). Mid December we will start reducing the Sages, keeping in mind the “3 tier process” that the Estrella Landscape Committee has recommended. This means the plants in the foreground are trimmed to a smaller size, middle a little taller, and the plants in the rear of an area are trimmed to allow the tallest height. The process allows for a greater depth of field, safety, and it improves the health and beauty of Estrella for years to come.

If you would like to learn more about pruning practices of our desert plants, a booklet was published by Janet L. Waibel; Sustainable Landscape Management. This is the reference we at Four Peaks Landscape Management, Management, and the Estrella Landscape Committee have embraced for the care of landscaping material in Estrella.

Thinning Gradual renewal

deciduous Shrubs

The pruning recommended for most deciduous shrubs consists of thinning out, gradual renewal, and rejuvenation pruning. In thinning out, a branch or twig is cut off either at its point of origin from the parent stem, to a lateral side branch, to be “Y” of a branch junction, or at ground level. Thin out the oldest and tallest stems first, to allow for growth of vigorous side branches. This method of pruning results in a more open plant and does not stimulate excessive new top growth. Considerable growth can be cut out without changing the plant’s natural appearance or habit of growth. Plants can be maintained at a given height and width for years by thinning out. This method of pruning is best done with pruning shears, loppers, or a saw (not hedge shears).

In gradual renewal pruning, a few of the oldest and tallest branches are removed at or slightly above ground level on an annual basis. Some thinning may be necessary to shorten long branches or maintain a symmetrical shape.

To rejuvenate an old, overgrown shrub, 1/3 of the oldest, tallest branches can be removed at or slightly above ground level before new growth starts.

When the shrub to be pruned is grown for its flowers, the pruning must be timed to minimize disruption of the blooming. Spring flowering shrubs bloom on last season’s growth and should be pruned soon after they bloom. This allows for vigorous growth during the summer, to provide flower buds for the following year.

estrella Wolves mountain Bike Club Begins First SeasonBy Jim Helms

The Estrella Wolves Mountain Bike Club just raced the first ever season opener of the Arizona

High School Cycling League. I know what you’re thinking. Arizona has a high school cycling league? And the next question is similar. Estrella has a high school Mountain Bike Club? This little known fact is true on both accounts. The Arizona High School Cycling League launched this summer under the umbrella of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association which has been supervising leagues in nine other states for as many as 13 years. Not wanting to miss any of the action, Coach Rayne Gray, with the help of committed local cyclists and parents, formed the Estrella Wolves Mountain Bike Club. “Estrella has so many fantastic trails and so many enthusiastic trail riders, from my perspective, we had no choice but to form a club,” exclaimed Gray.

The competitive season runs from late September through mid-November with a total of four races. The Wolves have been training three days per week since early July with a focus on skill development and aerobic conditioning. From the very beginning the team has worked on foundational bike handling skills emphasizing this for safety and continued skill progression. Assistant Coach Rhino Neiffer has reported that “coaching the kids has actually helped refine my own mountain bike handling skills.” Once the athletes have grasped the basics, they move to increasingly more complex riding requirements. “Riding can be uncomfortable and at times scary,” reports Gray. “So by building the athletes conditioning and developing their skills, we eliminate these issues. Now the kids can enjoy the ride with comfort and confidence.”

The Wolves Mountain Bike Club athletes are all high school age students coming from Estrella Foothills High School or home school students from within the EFHS boundaries. Some have raced previously and others have never ridden off of the sidewalk. Gray states that “Our primary goal is to get kids on mountain bikes, on the amazing trails of Estrella and facilitate the opportunity to race in a league designed just for High School athletes.” Coach Rhino summarizes it best when he says, “I’m really excited to see kids outside riding bikes and having fun.”

The Wolves have experienced an outpouring of enthusiastic support from the community, including the Trek Bicycle Store of West Phoenix, parents of student athletes and many volunteers. To learn more about the Estrella Wolves Mountain Bike Club please go to www.estrellamtb.com.

no longer be disinterested in how money works or turn it over to a

“professional” to manage for you. Truth is: “If you don’t care about

your money no one else will”!

We all face the same unknown future. Will my home value continue

to rise or is there another bubble looming? Am I invested in the right

areas for growth? Will I be able to afford to send my kids to college

and how do I save for retirement?

It’s time to get off your duff and COME JOIN THE GROUP. You

can be an EXPERT or a NOVICE, 18 or 80, all you must have is

an interest in how to better plan for your financial future. We’ll

have guest speakers in from time to time, so mark down the first

Tuesday (starting Oct 8th) of each month from 7:00pm to 8:00pm at

Starpointe. Call Kevin Jordan for more information: 623-528-8885.

Since the last article our organization has taken to the tasks of developing a mission statement and motto that would best describe our organizational philosophy and purpose. Different

versions from many different members have been submitted, reworked and improved upon. None will be final or accepted until we all agree that what is adopted will truly describe our meaning, our purpose and our direction. We are a young organization and all current members will play an important and integral role in laying the ground work for the organization now to benefit the future.

As we look to the future of the organization many other items need to be recognized, addressed and accomplished. Such as a set of by-laws that will outline and govern our body of policies and guidelines, committees that will structure our activities, schedule our speakers, develop public relations and sponsorships, as well as other opportunities. An organization flourishes with the diversity of its many members, members who share their ideas, knowledge, experience, and time.

At our most recent meeting Mr. Bill Stipp, Councilman for the City of Goodyear, gave a very enlightening overview of the city’s current and future growth prospects and its financial picture. Mr Stipp spoke of strategic priorities and goals now thru 2016

such as fiscal and resource management, economic vitality, sense of community and quality of life. Questions were raised concerning the 303 and where it is projected to run, the Estrella Falls Regional Shopping Center, the projected water treatment plant and the proposed route to the annexed Mobile location. All in all, it was very informative and interesting. We also had a special guest speaker, Ms. Tracy Langston, an activist, from the Center for Self Governance. Tracy spoke of exercising individual liberty, personal responsibility, and civic authority for the control of instituted government and how to influence legislation. “A government for the people and by the people.”

Our meetings are usually held on the last Wednesday of every month at 7 pm in the Starpointe Residents Club. If you would like to learn more about us, learn something about our government, both local and federal, find yourself interested in making a difference or would just like to meet other people that share your concerns, come and join us. Sit in, you never know how much you might enjoy yourself. Our meetings are open to all age groups 18 to ?.

Estrella has a large military presence; some active and veterans. We cannot say enough to ‘Thank You’ for your service to keep our great country safe.

Here is a list of some of Estrella’s military families. Make sure you come out to the ‘Salute Our Troops 10k Run, 5k Walk/Run and Family Fun Run’ on November 9, 2013. We will have a VIP booth for our military; autographs will be signed, pictures taken, stories shared and tons of hugs and

hands shaken. This event will benefit Military Assistance Mission (MAM) right here in Arizona. Many of the people listed included their story and/or photos. A flag symbol appears beside each person that volunteered to share their story and/or photo. I was only eighteen when I enlisted in the Navy right out of high school

in Cottonwood, MN. My home town was a farming county with little jobs and at fifty cents an hour I could make more while serving my country.

So I joined the U. S. Navy. I was on board the USS Thornton, a World War I

Vintage destroyer which was converted to a seaplane tender. The destroyer was at a submarine base in Pearl Harbor and I was getting ready to go ashore on Dec. 7th 1941. I saw the Japanese planes fly over and ran to my position and did what I was trained to do, pass up the ammunition. Many of my mates were wounded or had died during this attack.

Three years later on August 9th, 1945 at Tokyo Bay, and five days before the war had ended, I was transferred to the newly commissioned USS Borie DD #704. It was at this time a suicide plane crashed and hit the bridge which exploded between gun mount #1 and gun mount #2. I was also injured with multiple shrapnel wounds throughout my body.

I was transferred to a fleet hospital in Guam and was discharged in May of 1946. I was told I would never walk again but I proved them wrong. As much as it pained me to walk with the shrapnel in my legs I kept walking. To this day the shrapnel remains which is still very painful but I continue to go to the Starpointe gym every day for my mile walk and a little weight lifting.

I am ninety one and a half years old and have seen and experienced a lot of changes in my lifetime.

Congratulations to the twenty-one Estrella residents and four Estrella CCMC staff members who are the latest graduates of

the Goodyear Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.). As part of the eight-week class, C.E.R.T. members participated in a mock exercise where they demonstrated how to set up a disaster medical treatment area and conducted triage to assess and treat the needs of individuals that may be injured due to a disaster. These valuable skills make C.E.R.T. members an important asset of our Estrella Community, especially when disaster strikes.

The eight-week C.E.R.T. program develops a ready force of organized and trained volunteer disaster workers that operate at the neighborhood level. Experience has shown that in a disaster setting, ordinary citizens make over 80% of successful rescues as they respond to the emergency in their community. However, many untrained volunteer rescuers may actually cause harm or become injured in the process.

During the class, participants learn about fire safety and utility controls, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster preparedness, disaster psychology, C.E.R.T. organization and terrorism. The class wrapped up on October 8th at The Goodyear Fire Station #183. All of the Estrella participants were honored by Tim Newbill our City Emergency Manager and the Goodyear City Council for their volunteer work on October 28th at the Goodyear City Council meeting room at Goodyear City Hall. For more information about the next C.E.R.T. class visit the City of Goodyear website, call 623-932-2300 or inquire at [email protected].

C.E.R.T. will conduct a Spring session. Look for a sign up at Starpointe or via www.lifeinestrella.com, EBLAST and TV monitors. You never know when an emergency may happen, even in Estrella. Come and learn with other residents and get as prepared as possible.

Military Assistance Mission-MAM was started as a way to serve our Arizona military when facing dire financial needs. MAM provides direct services that

benefit military families whose income is below the local median income. To be eligible for assistance, applicants must be ranked E6 (staff sergeant) or lower. 72% of the households we serve make less than $20,000 per year, and 28% make between $20,000 and $35,000 per year.

Our Basic Needs Assistance offers a one-time basis to help families survive a financial crisis. This may include assistance with rent, utilities, vehicle payment, food and more. MAM has an onsite food pantry with nonperishable products.

MAM also supports with Morale programs. The Back-to-School event helps military families who cannot afford back-to-school supplies for their children which cost on average $85 per child. MAM also holds an annual Operation Holiday Open House where military families can choose from a variety of holiday items and toys to give as gifts to their family members. To a parent who cannot afford to buy gifts for his family, it means the world to see the smiles on his children’s

faces when they open the gifts that MAM provided them. MAM also offers a Holidays for Heroes Adoption program.

MAM was founded by Margy Bons, mother of Sgt. Michael Adam Marzano, who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country on May 7, 2005. Just two months after being deployed to Iraq, Michael was killed in an ambush. Margy was informed of her son’s tragic death on Mother’s Day. In order to further support Michael’s mission, Margy formed Military Assistance Mission, or MAM, which are Michael’s initials.

In a written letter to MAM, a spouse of a service member had this to say: “MAM never made me feel embarrassed, humiliated, or as if I was being interrogated. You guys didn’t take my dignity. I will forever be grateful to you and your program. I know that just when hope seems lost, there is MAM for so many military families. Thank you for all your help and God bless you all.”

Michael would be proud.

In honor of “saluting our troops” this month, we would like to introduce you to Viviana Perez, a woman with a heart of gold who served in the

Navy.

Viviana joined the Navy in October of 1998 as a Hospital Corpsman. When she graduated high school she was a little intimidated with the idea of surviving college and deciding on a career path. One afternoon, Viviana joined a good friend at a recruiter’s office and left confidently, knowing that the Navy could help guide her in her journey of self-discovery.

She trained as a physical therapist after boot camp in Fort San, Houston. After training, she worked under a physical therapist for many years in San Diego, CA. After her tenure in the military, Viviana went to college and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She is now in her fourth year of teaching and is currently teaching sixth graders. Viviana has two beautiful children and in addition to being a teacher and mother, she is active duty, serving in the Navy Reserves.

When asked what her experience was like in the Navy, Viviana only had wonderful things to say. Her experience was always a positive one and she credits that to having great leaders who taught her how to be independent and responsible. As a physical therapist, she was blessed with the opportunity of getting to work with a vast variety of professionals from many different places throughout the globe. This advantage has given her the ability to recognize different people’s talents- regardless of their background. She feels that being exposed to this skillset has really made

her a better person and a great teacher as well. She has gained the ability to understand and appreciate the diversity of our country where other people might not.

Her experience has also changed her outlook in life. She says that it’s easier to make friends as her walls come down quicker and she can find qualities in almost any individual that she didn’t see before. She also understands the importance of heritage, culture and how that contributes to different identities and personality traits.

In closing, I wanted to know what Viviana would recommend to young women who were considering the idea of joining the military. Viviana laughed and said she loved everything so much that she had to go back for more and joined the Reserves. She really missed the military and the life style that came with it. Viviana highly recommends joining the military. The knowledge and experience that you gain, you just can’t get anywhere else. Viviana ended the interview with John F Kennedy’s famous quote “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for you country”. Civic duty doesn’t just mean men, but women as well. There is genuinely a need for both in our armed forces.

IngredIents

3 cups shredded rotisserie chicken

1½ cups shredded Mozzarella

1 ½ cup shredded Monterey Jack Cheese

¾ cup crumbled queso fresco cheese

1 small red onion cut in half

1 ½ pounds tomatillos, husked and rinsed

1 Serrano Chile pepper stemmed & seeded

½ cup low sodium chicken broth

8 corn tortillas

1/3 cup cilantro

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

½ teaspoon Kosher salt

Pinch of sugar

Preheat the broiler and slice ½ of the red onion into thin slices and set aside. Place the other onion half, tomatillos and Serrano’s on a baking sheet that is lined with foil or sprayed with a non- stick spray. Broil vegetables until soft (about 8-10 minutes). Put vegetables and chicken broth in blender and puree items. Add ½ teaspoon salt and a pinch of sugar.

Stack the tortillas and wrap in a damp paper towel. Place tortillas in microwave and put on defrost setting for 1 – 2 minutes, just until tortillas are soft. Toss the chicken with 1 cup mozzarella cheese and 1 cup of Monterey Jack Cheese. Place about 2 tablespoons of meat mixture in the middle of each tortilla. Add a little cilantro and roll up. Place the enchiladas side by side in a slightly oiled 9 x 13 pan. Broil chicken tortillas until golden brown, about 3 – 5 minutes.

Pour the tomatillo sauce over enchiladas and top with remaining cheeses. Return to oven and broil until cheese is bubbly, about 3 – 5 minutes. Garnish with the onion queso fresco and remaining cilantro.

T he EMR Motorcycle Riding Group formed in April of this

year. About the same time AZ Bike Week pre-rally days

kicked off. For those who are unaware, AZ Bike Week is an

annual occurrence, and is comprised of five days of pre-rally events

followed by five more days of official Bike Week events. During those

10 days, members of our newly-created EMR group went on four

separate charity rides.

The first three rides were to raise money for cancer research and the

final one was to raise money for victims of child abuse. That ride,

the Child Empowerment Ride, was hosted and led by two actors

from the TV show Sons

of Anarchy. I volunteered

at that event and, while

I was exhausted from

directing traffic for 2,500

motorcyclists for four

hours, it was a feeling

like no other to do

something so worthwhile

and important. It was a

cause we all cared about

deeply as evidenced by

the number of bikers that

had volunteered to help

out that day.

Anyone who saw

the thousands of

motorcyclists all staged

in one huge area, all

there to help children

who suffer from abuse,

couldn’t help but be

moved. And when the

moment came for all

to start their engines,

the rumbling of 2,500 motorcycles was so loud that people from

everywhere around stopped and watched. The motorcyclists poured

out of the parking lot for five minutes straight, led by the Sons of

Anarchy actors, onto the loop 101, which was shut down by the

DPS officers specifically for this event. They all rode to Westworld

where they met up with the actors and shared in the pride of raising

money for such an important cause. The EMR Motorcycle Riding

Group was proud to participate in these events, and will surely be

involved again in more charity rides in the future.

CITY

The Goodyear Police Department would like to bring attention to the national epidemic of Domestic Violence and DV prevention efforts.

Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of behavior that includes the use or threat of violence and intimidation for the purpose of gaining power and control over another person.

Did you know?

• One in four women will experience domestic violence

• One in five teens in Arizona will experience dating abuse

• On average, someone in Arizona dies every three days due to domestic violence

• In Arizona, one or more children witness a domestic violence incident every 44 minutes

Ask yourself the following questions:

Does Your Partner…..

1. Call you names or put you down?

2. Push, hit, slap or choke you?

3. Tell you you’re a bad parent or threaten to take away or hurt your children?

4. Control what you do, where you go, who you see or talk to?

5. Say the abuse is your fault or apologize and promise that it won’t happen again, but it does?

If you answered yes to any of these questions you may be in an abusive relationship.

veteran’s day: remember to Honor Those Who protect our Country, Freedoms & SafetyBy Georgia Lord, Mayor, City of Goodyear

On November 11, Veteran’s Day, we pay a special tribute to those who have fought for our freedoms and sacrificed to defend our great nation.

The City of Goodyear has a long tradition as a patriotic community. Our residents served in World War I and II, and our community continues to be home to many brave soldiers today. There are Goodyear residents who have paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our country and we never do enough to thank those heroes for the freedom and security we enjoy today.

November 11 began as Armistice Day in 1919 to honor our veterans coming home from World War I. People began hanging American flags outside their homes to show it was where a veteran returning home from the war lived or to simply show support for service and country.

Today, there are no surviving World War I veterans left to honor, but it’s not too late to thank a World War II veteran or those who fought in other conflicts such as the Korean, Vietnam or Gulf wars, and most recently, the War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As a military wife and mother, I know of the sacrifices our soldiers and their families make on the home front and overseas. My husband Ron is a Retired Colonel from the Air Force. My daughter, Lt. Commander Tiffany Lord Arnaldo, served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy, my son Shane was in the Army for four years, and my son-in-law, Commander Rick Stewart served 20 years as a pilot in the Navy. I am proud of all of them for their accomplishments and service to our country.

Veteran’s Day will always be significant in our household. We must continue to teach future generations of the importance the day held in the past and will continue to hold in the future. After all, we are living in the shadow of nearby Luke Air Force Base, and many men and women who are stationed there live in the City of Goodyear. Please join me in showing your appreciation and gratitude when we see our soldiers out in the community.

Military veterans and those who put their lives on the line every day to help assure the safety of our country and towns in which we live, deserve our honor and respect not just on November 11, but every day.

Page 25: Life In Estrella Magazine - November 2013

As the Community Education Coordinator of the Goodyear Fire Department, I often talk to people about the ways they can stay safe in their homes. Too often, we have that talk

after they’ve suffered a damaging fire.

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, according to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The latest statistics from NFPA say U.S. Fire Departments responded to an estimated annual average of 156,600 cooking-related fires between 2007-2011.

Often when we’re called to a cooking-related fire, the residents tell us they only left the kitchen for a few minutes. Sadly, that’s all it takes for a dangerous fire to start. The bottom line is that there’s really no safe period of time for the cook to step away from a hot stove. A few key points to remember:

• Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the room even for a short period of time, turn off the stove

• Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles (e.g. potholders, towels, rags, drapes and food packaging)

CITY

G oodyear Police D e p a r t m e n t is an agency

comprised of individuals committed to making a positive difference in the community it serves, even for our four-legged friends!

On July 30, 2013, police were called out

to a Goodyear residence, on a complaint of animal abuse and neglect. When police personnel arrived, they discovered a very disturbing sight! A male Rottweiler was living on the side of a house with no shelter from the hot summer sun, lying on feces-covered gravel. There was very minimal food and water available, and no human interaction. It was later reported that this dog had been living in these dismal conditions for approximately two years.

The Goodyear Police Department contacted the compassionate folks at The Rotten Rottie Rescue and this sweet boy was rescued and placed in immediate foster care and renamed Erie. But, that is

LIFEINESTRELLA.COM | OCTOBER 2013 | 23

CITYMaking A Difference for Our Four-Legged FriendsBy Lisa Kutis, PIO, Goodyear Police Department

not the end of Erie’s story….

Erie had some difficulty getting along with others. After two years of enduring harsh living conditions, Erie developed behavioral problems and trust issues. Unfortunately, Erie’s behavioral issues rendered him unadoptable.

When pets are not adoptable, they typically end up being euthanized. This was a disturbing reality for the employees at the Goodyear Police Department who had worked so hard to get Erie rescued; this was a reality they were unwilling to accept. The good people at the Rotten Rottie Rescue reported back to the department, “Erie wants to be a good boy; he just needs to learn how.”

After learning that the specialized training Erie required would cost approximately $750, Goodyear Police Department Personnel reached deep into their hearts and wallets and took up a donation with the mission of saving Erie’s life. The good news is that enough money was pledged through employee and outside donations for Erie to go to training to become an adoptable companion. Goodyear Police employees agree, “We may not be able to save them all, but

we can make a difference one customer at a time!”

• Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a “kid-free zone” of three feet around the stove

• If you have a fire in your microwave, turn it off immediately and keep the door closed

• Always keep an oven mitt and a lid nearby. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan (make sure you are wearing the oven mitt). Turn off the burner. Do not move the pan. To keep the fire from restarting, do not remove the lid until it is completely cool. Never pour water on a grease fire. If the fire does not go out, get out of the home and call the fire department

• If an oven fire starts, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. If the fire does not go out, get out of the home and call the fire department

A cooking fire can quickly turn deadly. Too many homes are destroyed and people killed or injured by fires that could have been easily avoided. Please heed these simple safety rules. The firefighters would like to be in your kitchen, but only when you invite them for dinner!

‘50s Sock HopSaturday, September 21st, 7:00pm to 9:00pm Starpointe Residents Club Cocktails and Conversations is going back in time! We are putting on our poodle skirts and greasing back our hair so that we can hop back to the 1950s for a good ‘ole fashioned Sock Hop complete with a live band and a car show by the Estrella Mountain Car Club.

‘That Kool Band’ will be out to perform a two hour show that is sure to have you tapping your toes or dancing up a storm. They will be bringing us their show titled ‘At the Hop,’ a musi-cal tribute to some of the greatest Rock & Roll stars of the ‘50s and ‘60s including ‘The Beach Boys,’ ‘The Beatles,’ ‘Dion and the Belmonts,’ and many, many more. They preformed here in Estrella last May and many of those that attended have said they put on a great show so you don’t want to miss them.

Members of the Estrella Mountain Car club will be displaying some of their hot rods and unique car collections at the event, too. This club is a group of 30 residents and guests whose members own over 40 unique automobiles. The years and models of these cars range from current convertibles to exotic imports to restored hotrods. You don’t have to be a member of the Estrella Mountain Car Club to show off your car. If you have a unique or classic car that you would like to display at the event there will be spaces in the parking lot reserved for you to show off your cars, too.

Dinner will include a classic menu of burgers, chips, and side salads catered by Dad’s Catering. The evening’s signature
