It’s Time for the Estrella Annual MeetingBy Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager

I t’s that time of year again; It’s time for the Estrella Annual Meeting. This meeting is not

only a business meeting, but a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the Estrella Community over the past year. It is bound to be quite a celebration with a Big Top theme and so many things for the community to be proud of.

The evening will begin with a vendor reception starting at 5:30pm. Community partners, vendors, and friends of the community will gather in front of

the performing Arts Center at Estrella Foothills High School to meet and greet with residents. The Estrella Foothills High School Culinary Class will be offering tastings of some of their fantastic culinary creations. There will be games to help you win more raffle tickets to increase your odds of winning one of the over 50 prizes we will be giving away later in the evening.

The meetings portion of the evening will begin with the Luke Air Force Base Honor Guard presenting the flag and a member of the Goodyear Police Department leading us in the National Anthem.

>>> mANAGer’S meSSAGe

Then the Estrella Community Association and the Villages of Estrella Community Association will hold their business meeting. This meeting will also be the final step in electing two new resident board members for The Villages Community Association. The nominating committee made up of resident volunteers accepted applications from residents interested in running for this volunteer position in July and August and the ballots were sent out to each voting member of the VCA.

After the business meetings and the election of the new resident board members, there will be community updates including a financial report. There will also be updates from the management company, CCMC, as well as, the Developer, Newland Communities. We will also celebrate the many accomplishments of all our resident volunteers. From the residents that serve on Estrella’s five Committees that have dedicated numerous hours to help ensure that this community is functioning as successfully as possible to the event volunteers that make sure that the residents of Estrella have a fun way to come together and connect. Every resident volunteer is important and has contributed to the community’s accomplishments this year. I hope to see everyone on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:30 pm applauding your fellow residents for their hard work and celebrating all the great things that are happening in your community. Plus there will be over $4,000 worth of donated prizes given away and you have to be present to win!

R ecently the HOA office has seen an increase in calls regarding barking dogs in the community. Now that the weather is getting a bit cooler, residents are

spending more time outside and so are their pets. Please be a responsible pet owner and make sure to attend to your dog when it continuously barks.

Often residents are at work and the dog is left outside or there is a dog door to allow the dog outside as needed and the owner may not realize that the dog barks during the day. If you have a dog that tends to bark, please consider your neighbor before allowing your dogs “free” access to the back yard. The best advice is to contact your neighbor and let them know of the situation. If there is a barking dog that is disturbing the neighborhood, please go to lifeinestrella.com to access a Violation Complaint Form found in the Document Library under Other Applications and Forms (http://www.lifeinestrella.com/images/customers/461583/docs/ESTRELLA%20VIOLATION%20COMPLAINT%20FORM.PDF). Fill it out and return it to the Association. Our staff will send out a courtesy letter to the resident. For additional assistance, the City of Goodyear has rules regarding disturbances and you should also access their web site http://www.ci.goodyear.az.us/.

For the health and safety of everyone in the community, please observe the following:

• Dogs must always be on a leash when off of their private

property

• Pet owners must be responsible and always clean up after

your pet

• Make sure your pet has an id tag with correct contact

information

• Make sure your pet is licensed and registered with Maricopa

County

Do your part to keep the neighborhood clean and safe for all to enjoy!

Question - We moved to Estrella about 3 years ago from the SE and planted all types of trees and cacti not really knowing anything about them; they were just unusual and different to what we were accustomed to. We have replaced many of our cacti and agave plants because some type of critter is eating it. Our totally destroyed or damaged plants are the Saguaro, Mexican Fence Post and Agave. We have tried red pepper, moth balls and finally mesh wiring to no avail. They still find a way to eat them. Can you help us?

Answer – When we go through long, hot days & nights without a bit of rain for months, the wildlife are looking everywhere they can for just a little bit of water. Cacti and Agave plants contain water. You may have even noticed your watering drip system hoses have been chewed on. The critters don’t typically eat the native Cacti, but I do see a lot of damage on the imported varieties. I have had some success with fox urine, but they usually figure out soon that it’s not really a fox. You can get the fox urine at stores like Cabellas, Ace or possibly at a nursery. As the cacti mature, they tend to leave them alone as the flesh is less attractive as it ages, but not always; rabbits can be relentless.

“EstrellaScape”Question by Estrella Resident; Answer by Jim Potts, Horticulturist

Do you have a landscape vegetation question? If so, send your questions to [email protected]. Questions are randomly selected for publication in Life In Estrella.

T here is light at the end of this long, hot tunnel we call summer. It should be about another month before the summer heat begins to abate. This month the humidity levels will begin to

fall (hopefully).

If the humidity is still high and monsoon rains continue, monitor your watering closely so as to let things dry out a little. With the heat continuing, maintain your summer watering schedule for trees and shrubs, begin to cut back a little by late September which will help your plants harden off for the winter.

This is also the time to start prepping your lawn for a winter nap or over seeding. If you don’t plan on over seeding your lawn for a green

winter look, add a balanced fertilizer, mow as needed and start reducing your water as the evenings start to cool. It’s very im-portant to continue to keep the grass hydrated but it won’t need as much water as the growth will slow down as the days shorten.

We will talk more about over seeding in the October article, but for Sep-tember, follow the instructions above. It’s always best to put the sum-mer lawn to bed healthy and happy for a vigorous return in the spring.

We have started the fall planting project. Like the spring project, we are following the recommended priority list developed by your Landscape Committee.

We will be starting at the Star Tower & Starpointe, revisiting the Grand Marquee entrances, Lakes, Bougainvillea Park, neighbor-hood marquee corners, gated and/or custom communities, major right of ways and individual neighborhoods.

This will be the third planting project in the last year and we are mak-ing significant progress through the community.

We are hoping to have made a major contribution to the community plant inventory by this time next year.

Y ou’ve probably been hearing a lot lately in the news about

the upswing in the housing market. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, national June 2013 new-home sales were more than eight percent ahead of the 2012 numbers. The Phoenix foreclosure inventory dropped significantly since last year and the National Association of Home Builders reports that home builder confidence is up and the industry is enjoying consistent expansion.

Our community has mirrored the positive news, as we have seen steady growth with new builders and partners joining the community. There are several new faces in the neighborhood as more and more people choose to call Estrella home. In fact, sales are up by 41 percent compared to last year’s numbers. Our home building activity is also up, as Joseph Carl Homes opened its new neighborhood in May, featuring five new floor plans and two beautifully furnished models. You may have noticed that the T.W. Lewis by David Weekley Homes’ new parcel is being graded for homesites. The builder has purchased 167 homesites, 70 percent of which will be alongside Estrella’s award-winning Nicklaus-designed golf course.

>>> developer’S CorNer

Estrella Mirrors National Growth Trends Submitted by Newland Communities

The growth is not limited to homes either. Mountain Ranch Medical Commons is seeing a steady stream of patients with the opening of the Banner Medical Center. In Mountain Ranch Marketplace, the McDonald’s is under construction with an anticipated opening date in October and a nail salon is also slated to open next month.

With the overall market recovery that is occurring in Phoenix, and more specifically at Estrella, the future of Estrella is bright and the community is poised for continued growth. As the developer of Estrella, Newland is always working to bring in new builders and potential retail to further develop and improve our great community.

Artists & Ballet Arizona Come TogetherBy Karen Gallo

Y ou may have had the good fortune to meet and see the talented artistic work of some of your Estrella neighbors when the Phoenix Symphony played at the North Lake in

April. Another opportunity to view and buy art awaits you when Ballet Arizona visits Estrella on Friday, September 20th at 7pm, with the gates opening at 4pm! The community of Estrella excels in offering the Valley a source of culture like the symphony, ballet and beautiful, quality objects of fine art to grace your home and lifestyle.

The Estrella Art Walk begins at 4pm. Arts of Estrella members will have a variety of art available including oils, mixed media, photography, pen and ink, acrylic and gourds. We invite you to meet the artists, you may just find that one piece you can’t live without!

All of the artists had at one time or another, a “regular” job. Barb Woolston was in the nursing profession. Her attention to detail is reflected in her “ladies of the Southwest” and Arizona flora and fauna. Both Gerald Schwartz and Frank Williams were hairstylists. Now Gerry is an annual exhibitor at the prestigious Festivals of the Arts in Laguna Beach, showing his contemporary realism. No one can paint a better sky than Gerry. Frank is the “Gourd Master.” He can create an intricately carved gourd vase or an amazing Southwest mask.

If you are looking for something on the edgy side, Cellina Buckborough is remarkably skillful with spray paint, pen, pencil or a camera. Michael Cunningham, or “Chef,” not only rules the Starpointe Café, he creates dynamic abstracts on canvas. Mike Greenfield was a school principal, became a sculptor in his second life, and now creates stone and bronze pieces that have won him the distinction of being recognized by the Cowboy Artists of America. Gus and Doris Schoenamsgruber are the dynamic duo of photography. Gus captures landscapes while Doris composes detailed botanical images.

Bonnie Kitchens is a master of murals and has had her work published in articles and magazines. Susan Freed, a former advertising and fashion illustrator, works in several mediums including acrylics, water color, pen and ink. Stewart Rein brings an international flair to his photography. Stew has captured amazing shots while traveling in Europe. Linda Enoch was trained by a Dresden German artist while living in Germany with her military husband. Her Old World Master techniques have won her several awards. Debra Goley, a former practicing architect, is the director at the Creative Arts Academy and also owns a decorative design and mural business. She also teaches art to children and adults. Ardith Brondt, a designer and former owner of a metal sculpture business, is an author of an Arizona travel book, and a golf sales representative and now creates majestic murals.

If you would like to preview some of the art, please check out our blogspot at www.artsofestrella.blogspot.com or www.facebook.com/ArtsofEstrella.

Art: A Path to Creative DiscoveryBy Phyllis Hill, CDP, Senior Consultant, The Creative Arts Academy

P icasso, Rembrandt, Monet . . . When many of us think of art, we may think of Monet’s painting “Impression Sunrise,” hanging on a museum wall, or a sculpture

such as Di Vinci’s “David,” on display. The mention of art may evoke images of marble pillars, ancient expressions of periods of time, odd shapes of clay or metal reflective of a more modern twist. But art is more than an end product on display; art is a path to creative discovery.

Most aspiring artists will never attain the fame of Picasso and Rembrandt, but they do not let this stop them from engaging their creative value, for the creative process inspires the soul, entertains the mind and encourages artistic expression. Expressions of creativity are limitless, from paper to canvas, brick walls to drywall, from wood trusses to water-filled shapes, flowers to planets. Creativity spurs us down the path of discovery and broadens our relationship with texture, color, time, light, sound, volume, size, and shape. Art brings all of these elements together to increase our understanding and enhance our experience in the world around us.

You can engage your creative value. Yes, you have creativity eagerly waiting to draw you into a delightful experience of discovery! No need for reserve or embarrassment; the discovery of creativity will inspire your own style of expression. It is the process of discovery that holds great value.

There are many opportunities to engage your creative side right here in Estrella. The Creative Arts Academy provides classes for those who dare to discover. Approaching this fall is Coffee and Canvas, September 13, 2013 and Family Canvas, November 2, 2013. Visit www.createu.org for class registration, time and place or send an email to [email protected] for more information. Come and experience the warmth of community in an inspirational setting over a delightful cup of coffee and discover your creative value!

Let’s Hear It for RenewalBy Andy Ragone, Estrella Resident

I f summer in Phoenix means one thing for the Ragone family, it means getting to a cooler place and disconnecting for a bit. This year would be no exception.

Renewal requires us to disengage from our often-senseless ruts and take the time needed to ponder the higher ideals with which we truly wish to define ourselves as human beings. In other words, we have us as we currently are... and we wish to be (the upgraded premium version). It’s taking the needed time for renewal that allows us to move in that direction once more.

Disconnect? Yup. For me, I easily get weighed down by the petty concerns of living day to day--the news, the job, the family’s well being, and yes, even the daily stress of driving on the freeway during rush hour. When I think about it, many of my concerns are pretty senseless, and the emotions they evoke within me are an indicator that I’ve got some priorities that are in need of changing.

As I think back to this summer’s getaway, there were definitely moments of genuine disconnect and rest. In fact, the times when I

was most able to disconnect just so happened to be the times when I engaged in the most strenuous of physical activities like hiking or mountain biking. Hmmmm, there’s something to that.

On one particular hike, I thought of little except for putting one foot in front of the other as we made it to our 12,000 foot summit. Man, the air is thin up there! Once we made it down the mountain, cleaned up, and felt the stiffness roll in like a San Francisco fog, I was able to think with far greater clarity about what I wish to accomplish for the year ahead. It was a refreshing moment of big-picture thinking.

So, I set my goals for 2013-2014 and began thinking about what changes would be needed in my daily personal disciplines to accomplish said goals.

Truth be known, I may not accomplish all I set out to do this year, but I do know that daily prioritized living will get me a lot closer to those goals. Thanks to our time spent in renewal, I can now step back into my routine and reconnect with a stronger sense of purpose and excitement.

Easy Chicken Pot PieBy Estrella Resident

Equipment: 9 x 13 pyrex or glass dish

Ingredients:

1 small roasted chicken (Cook your own or purchase precooked from supermarket - about 1 1/2 pounds)

1/2 teaspoon sweet or smoked paprika

1/4 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 cup frozen pearl onions

1 cup frozen peas and diced carrots

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups low-sodium chicken stock

1 cup heavy cream

1 store bought pie crust, unbaked and thawed if frozen (the kind you can roll out)

1 egg, lightly beaten

Directions: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Remove the skin from the chicken and discard. Remove the chicken from the bone and cut up the chicken into cubes about 1 inch and place in a bowl. Season the chicken with the paprika, oregano, salt, black pepper, garlic.

In a skillet with a little olive oil, slightly cook the onions and peas & carrots until tender, about three minutes. Add garlic and stir for about

one more minute. Sprinkle in the flour until the flour dissolves into the vegetables and a juice appears. Add the bowl of chicken to pan of vegetables and the chicken stock. Raise to a simmer and stir until juice thickens. When thickened stir in the heavy cream.

Pour all of the chicken mixture into a 9 x 13 glass or pyrex pan. Unfold the pie crust and place over the top of the filling, tucking the excess edges inside the pan. Brush the crust evenly with the egg wash. Using a fork to gently poke holes on top of the crust, about 10 holes. Place in the oven and bake until the crust is golden brown, about 20 – 30 minutes. Cool for 20 minutes and enjoy!

I have to admit to having been somewhat terrified to attend my first meeting with the Estrella Photo

Group. When I walked into the meeting I saw that I was right to be intimidated by my meager efforts at photography. I have subscribed to magazines and read many, many books on the subject of photography. None of those prepared me for the realization that I had to work hard to improve my photos.

Despite my fears I kept attending meetings. I learned more in a few months of attending EPG meetings than all the books and seminars I had read and attended through the years. We have some amazing photographers in this group. If you ask questions and just listen to our many knowledgeable photographers talk about the subject of photography and digitalization you can learn how to be a better photographer. It isn’t always easy to have someone tell you what would make your photo better.

The Estrella Conservative Republican ClubBy Walt Steiner, Estrella Resident

T he Estrella Conservative R e p u b l i c a n

Club is an ever growing group of citizens concerned with the direction in which our country is headed with regard to fiscal responsibility, the ever expanding role of government in

our daily lives, and the protection of our personal freedoms, such as, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. While our concerns are many, our initiative is to become better informed about ongoing issues confronting not only us, but all Americans, and by reaching out and becoming involved in community support and action of those issues. Our

involvement is pursued in various ways, whether it be through attending meetings of local government to show support of, or lack thereof, on certain issues, to helping rally out the vote prior to elections. We, by choice, are not currently affiliated with the Maricopa County Republican Party nor the Arizona State Republican Organization. This allows us the ability to better choose our concerns and the direction with which they should be addressed, acted upon, and pursued.

Issues discussed at our most recent meeting were the Common Core Adoption by all schools and its overall effect on education, the Proposal to reject the state action on Medicaid, which, if approved, will appear and be put to vote on the November ballot, and the States Rights for voting criteria within the state to prevent its abolishment. Life at the Yacht Club of EstrellaBy Jordan Ring (a.k.a. “Cap’n Salty”), Yacht Club Coordinator

I f anyone ever told me that someday I would be working around boats, I would have scoffed. I have been a

ground-pounder my whole life; leaving my size 13 EE boot prints in some relatively inhospitable and not-so-luxurious terrain. As I approach the mid-century mark, I reflect on the last 36 months I have spent with CCMC, and more specifically, the last 17 as the Yacht Club Coordinator.

There are few things as calming as the morning hours at North Lake. The sunrise glints off the placid water, the ducks are camped out along the bay doors to the boathouse, and the air has a taintless quality to it. Runners are running; walkers are walking; bikers are….well, you get the point. Another day is upon us.

I swear there are people that hide in the bushes and watch for the flags. No sooner do I run them up, folks start wandering toward the dock.

Fast forward 20 minutes; Jimmy Buffet is selling me on the notion of a cheeseburger…medium rare with mustard would be nice. Pedal boats are out and waiting for the inevitable tour ‘round the lake, the Hobie just waiting for the right breeze and the right sailor to fly her hull. I can’t help but smile at where Life has brought me. Here comes a group…and another. This day is looking up!

Twenty years ago, I was doing things that have yet to be declassified. Now I am here. I like being the “boat guy.” I have

seen people come and go, wedding vows exchanged (and a couple arguments), more Quinceañera groups than I can recall, and even met a cool goose named Bob. This has been part of my life; a life that was on a path of inevitability with Estrella, an eclectic hamlet in the desert.

As soon as it started, the day is drawing to a close. I try to ensure everybody has enjoyed the convivial atmosphere that I strive to create. Boats go back; flags come down.

See you all tomorrow.

expertise, have an open forum of discussion, and answer any questions raised. Previous speakers have included Rhonda King, 4th District Representative and local resident, Joe Pizzillo, Goodyear City Councilman, and Tom Horne, State Attorney General. Upcoming at our August meeting Mr. John Huppenthal, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, will address the Common Core Adoption and the role of government in its implementation. Other suggested guest speakers for future meetings are Sheriff of Maricopa County Joe Arpio, as well, as, Goodyear Chief of Police Jerry Geier.

The Year in the Arts at Estrella Foothills High SchoolBy the EFHS Fine and Performing Arts Department

>>>eSTrellA FooTHIllS HIGH SCHool

T he Estrella Foothills High School Fine and Performing Arts Department is going

to have a very busy year. Staff members have many activities and productions planned and are excited for the new season. The theatre program, under the direction of Mrs. Tricia Schultz, will kick off the performing arts season with the fall play, The Murder Mystery at the Murder Mystery on September 19th and 20th. Theatre will also produce a winter and spring play to be performed in December and April.

The dance program, under the direction of Ms. Shannon Olson, will produce two semester end dance concerts, one in December and one in April. These concerts are always top quality and are great entertainment. The Music program, consisting of band and choir, and under the direction of Mr. Lance Wilson, will present fall and spring semester end concerts, as well as providing the national anthem and marching band music for many of the school’s sporting events. Finally, the visual arts program will present various art showings throughout the year both at our campus and the district office, as well as in various community venues to be determined by Mrs. Darleen Deal, the Art teacher.

In April all of the programs will combine together to present the annual EFHS Fine Arts Festival. This event showcases all

of these performing programs and culminates in a tremendous visual arts display with refreshments on the art room patio. It is a great evening for art lovers and those who just appreciate good entertainment.

Throughout the year, the high school programs will be working with the K-8 feeder programs in various ways including combined music programs, dance and art clinics and performances, and the junior theatre club. To get additional information on any of these activities, community

members can contact the instructors of those particular programs.

The most immediate project on the horizon for the Fine Arts Dept. at Estrella Foothills is the transition from a printed season program to a digital video program. Students and teachers from the four participating areas will be selling advertising space in the video program to help support efforts to provide book scholarships to the seniors from the fine arts program who are going on to additional education. If you have questions about the season offerings or are interested in purchasing space in this video program, please contact the department chair, Mrs. Schultz, at [email protected] for pricing and availability.

All members of the EFHS Fine Arts Department are looking forward to an exciting and active year working with the students and families of the local community.

T he summer is over and our children are heading back to school. I would like to take this moment to remind everyone of the great fundraising programs we

have in place, here at Estrella Mountain Elementary School. There has been a fantastic addition to our drop-off locations. You can not only drop these coupons off at our school and the Remax office next to Safeway, but the lovely team of our Chase bank is also holding a Collection Box for us. So next time you do your banking at Chase, bring your Box Tops, Campbell’s Labels for Education, and Tyson A+ coupons for drop-off. Remember, they also have a Drive-through.

You can find lists of the participating products under the following links:

N ew this school year is an increase in Spanish instruction in the classrooms at Estrella Mountain. All sixth through eighth grade students will receive Spanish instruction

every day. Mrs. Alvarez is educating our seventh and eighth graders in conversational Spanish as well as Hispanic cultures and customs.

Mrs. Urrea is the Spanish instructor for K-6. She will see sixth graders every day, and the other grade levels once or twice weekly. She is teaching the students the alphabet, sounds, phrases, and the Hispanic cultures and customs.

Both our Spanish teachers are also involved in the Culture Club. The Culture Club recognizes and celebrates all cultures. Guest speakers from around the world come to share their expertise with the students. Food from these countries also adds to the fun of learning about countries around the world.

A rt is an important component of a strong, attractive and healthy community. Art

and cultural opportunities have a significant positive impact on our economic development and the quality of life of Goodyear residents. We have taken many steps to increase the opportunities for arts and culture in our community and we will strive to do even more in the future.

Years ago, we established a Percent for Art fund where one percent of the cons t ruc t i on costs of eligible Capital Improvement Projects are designated for

the design, implementation, and maintenance of a Public Art Program. We have all admired the 60-foot baseball themed structure at the Goodyear Ballpark. The Ziz by Donald Lipski is an award winning project that is just one example of the community benefits of public art.

In the future, we will look to explore ways to further expand art in our community by working with the private sector to create a program for art in private development. Although we do not yet have a formal process in place, we are always quick to

suggest that our private developers consider implementing aesthetic components in their designs.

The City also showed our commitment to the arts by establishing an Arts and Culture Commission and creating an Arts and Culture Coordinator position. The Arts Commission is a group of Goodyear residents who make art-related recommendations to the City Council. The Commission engages the community to develop recommendations that truly reflect the vision and values of the Goodyear stakeholders. The Arts and Culture Coordinator manages the city’s Public Art Program and also works with outside organization to promote arts and culture in our community.

The City organizes many events and projects throughout the year to encourage and celebrate the arts. I encourage you to attend some of our upcoming events, including the Art Walk during Ballet Under the Stars in Estrella, the Hot Coffee lecture series, and the Art Commission’s Visual Art Project Table at our GAIN Night event.

I will also be re-introducing a fun and exciting project that we did several years ago. The Mayor Selects Art Show was a great chance for us to interact with our schools and see some of our most creative minds at work. We will be implementing this program again and we will soon be putting a call out to all of our Goodyear high school students to provide artwork for the contest.

Please stay tuned for more information on the Mayors Selects program and other art and cultural opportunities in Goodyear. You will be able to find more information on the city website at www.goodyearaz.gov or you can contact our Arts and Culture Coordinator, Guylene Ozlanski at 623-882-7530.

C rimes of opportunity are everywhere, but sometimes we get

complacent, thinking, “It won’t happen to me.” According

to Arizona DPS 2011 crime report, a major crime occurs

every 2 minutes 5 seconds. http://www.azdps.gov/about/reports/

Crime_In_Arizona/ .

Although the statistics show that crime is all around us, there are

things we can all do to protect ourselves from becoming a victim.

The West Valley in particular has recently been the target of garage

door opener thefts. The media recently reported that thieves are

targeting church parking lots and stealing garage door openers from

vehicles. While the owner is at church, the thieves access the home

using the garage door opener, burglarizing the home.

Personal Safety By Lisa Kutis, PIO, Goodyear Police Department

Here are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself, your

home and property.

1. Do not leave your garage door opener in the vehicle

2. Lock your car

3. Lock your interior garage door going into the home

4. Do not leave valuables or documents with your address in your

vehicle

The Goodyear Police Department reminds you to take responsibility

for your personal safety. Protect yourself from crimes of opportunity

and don’t become a victim.

‘50s Sock HopSaturday, September 21st, 7:00pm to 9:00pm Starpointe Residents Club Cocktails and Conversations is going back in time! We are putting on our poodle skirts and greasing back our hair so that we can hop back to the 1950s for a good ‘ole fashioned Sock Hop complete with a live band and a car show by the Estrella Mountain Car Club.

‘That Kool Band’ will be out to perform a two hour show that is sure to have you tapping your toes or dancing up a storm. They will be bringing us their show titled ‘At the Hop,’ a musi-cal tribute to some of the greatest Rock & Roll stars of the ‘50s and ‘60s including ‘The Beach Boys,’ ‘The Beatles,’ ‘Dion and the Belmonts,’ and many, many more. They preformed here in Estrella last May and many of those that attended have said they put on a great show so you don’t want to miss them.

Members of the Estrella Mountain Car club will be displaying some of their hot rods and unique car collections at the event, too. This club is a group of 30 residents and guests whose members own over 40 unique automobiles. The years and models of these cars range from current convertibles to exotic imports to restored hotrods. You don’t have to be a member of the Estrella Mountain Car Club to show off your car. If you have a unique or classic car that you would like to display at the event there will be spaces in the parking lot reserved for you to show off your cars, too.

Dinner will include a classic menu of burgers, chips, and side salads catered by Dad’s Catering. The evening’s signature

G etting the most out of life - that’s what each of us

wants for ourselves, our families and our friends. Your

health and fitness, both body and mind, are more

important to this goal than all other factors combined.

Your work life, your leisure life, your family life and your love

life all depend greatly on your body’s ability to function and

perform, your mind’s alertness and memory, and of course,

your ability to resist injury, sickness and disease.

The most important determinants of your health and fitness are

nutrition and exercise. With more than 20 years of experience

in the fields of kinesiology and exercise physiology, I would

like to introduce myself. My name is Tracy Stone. My family

and I are new residents to Estrella and I am looking forward

to the opportunity to develop many friendships through my

work in the field of health and fitness in Estrella.

I graduated from Humboldt State University with a Master

of Science degree in 1994. Since becoming certified by the

National Athletic Trainers Association in 1992, I have worked

in the physical therapy field as well as in the fitness industry

as a Master Trainer and a Post Rehabilitation Specialist for

more than 20 years. Prior to relocating to Estrella, I was

working as a full-time Master Trainer at a beautiful health

club on the Humboldt Bay. I have experience working with

clients who range from the young and healthy to clients who

were overcoming illness such as stroke and heart disease. I

have many years of experience assessing clients following

orthopedic injuries and have worked

with physicians and physical

therapists in overseeing both the pre-

surgical and the post-rehabilitation

aspect of a client’s program.

I place a great deal of emphasis

on proper mechanics and postural

alignment as well as joint stabilization

in order to prevent future injuries.

My goal is to provide clients with

knowledge and foundational skills

needed to enjoy a healthy, happy life. I

believe that personal training is more than a series of workout

sessions. It is a physical, psychological, emotional and social

experience. Every training plan is custom developed to best

address the individual needs of each client.

I look forward to the opportunity to assist Estrella residents

with their fitness needs.

Estrella’s Lakeside Farmers Market returns, one month early this year! Every third Saturday of the month, October through April, residents and guests can enjoy local fare and socialize while taking in the gorgeous views of North Lake and the Sierra Estrella Mountains.

Merchants from across the Valley will showcase specialty items such as locally grown produce, fresh breads and pastries, local artwork and more. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the cooler weather and kick off fall season festivities. Food vendors will be onsite and a “kid’s zone” will be set up featuring a bounce house, face painting and more.

The Estrella Lakeside Farmers Market is free and open to the public. For more information contact the Estrella Information Center at 623-386-1000.

The Estrella community is proud to be the home of some amazing residents, including 16-year-old professional surfer, Roxy Girl and Starboard International Dream Team Rider, Vanina Walsh. The Arizona native attended Westar Elementary School for three years and now competes alongside some of the best ocean athletes in the nation. Walsh specializes in Stand Up Paddle Surf (SUP), Longboard, Shortboard and Stand Up Paddle Racing.

The young surfer has many accomplishments to be proud of - she recently placed first in the SUP Jr. Pro 2013 and second in the Women’s Division for the Stand Up Paddle World Tour Hawaii 2012. With a minimum amount of equipment and no waves required, Stand Up Paddling is the world’s fastest-growing water sport and can be practiced anywhere from ocean surfs to rivers and lakes. When not catching waves in Hawaii, Walsh has been known to practice in the community lakes at Estrella.

Walsh has become an inspiration to many and is a positive role model for young girls to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
