Currituck County Library System Annual Report 2010-2011

Highlights A federal Library Services and Technology Act grant allowed us to replace all the

public use computers at the Barco and Corolla libraries. A grant from the Currituck County Public Library Foundation allowed us to

update the software on all public use computers in the County to the most current version of Windows and Microsoft Office.

The Moyock Library continues to be well supported and used by its community. Average monthly circulation at Moyock increased by 22% this year over the previous fiscal year. Annual circulation figures at the Currituck County libraries increased by 30% in the past fiscal year. Twenty-six point five percent of that increase was due to Moyock. The remaining 3.5% came from Barco.

The Friends of the Library continue to provide financial support to the library system by paying for the large print book subscriptions, the summer reading program, special adult programs, the movie license at the Moyock library and supplementing the budget for books and audio books.

A grant from the Currituck County Public Library Foundation provided funds for archival materials to properly store our genealogy and local history collection.

The Albemarle Genealogy Society donated funds to purchase two scanners for the library and to hire students to help with the indexing of our genealogy collection.

The library system has a new website and logo. I created the website using a content management program called Joomla! and our logo was designed by Barco staff member Leslie Price. The logo identifies the library’s four focus areas: lifelong learning, technology, heritage and entertainment.

Forty-one percent of Currituck County residents have library cards and 23%

of residents use their library regularly, checking out an average of 25 items per person last year.

Becky Callison resigned as director of the East Albemarle Regional Library System. Due to reductions in state aid funds and failure to meet maintenance of effort, the regional board decided not to hire someone from outside the region and appointed Jonathan Wark, the Dare County Librarian to serve in a dual capacity as EARL director and Dare County Librarian. The remaining two county librarians were made assistant directors and the duties of the EARL director were divided up between the three county librarians.

The money saved on not having to pay for a director, was used instead to upgrade regional network computer equipment and pay for the installation of the computers received from the LSTA grant.

The EARL employee who provided cataloging support also resigned and cataloging duties are now performed by other county and EARL staff.
