• Director’s MessageEvEry day in 2 0 10 the Stark County District Library was making a positive difference in the lives of thousands in Stark County. That difference is reflected in our 2010 Annual Report. Whether it was through literacy programs, youth story hours, computer training for seniors or simply providing a gathering place, SCDL was there. While some may question the importance and place of public libraries in this new age of technology, our library proved its relevance through computer training,

job programs, e-book mater ials and online i n f o r m a t i o n a c c e s s . With the presentation of the 2009 National Meda l f o r Museum and Library Services in Washington D.C. early in the year, SCDL reaffirmed its positive impact in Northeast

Ohio communities beset by tough economic times. With a new strategic plan in place and the support of many community donors, SCDL looks forward to a bright future with evolving as well as traditional library services. Now, more than ever, public libraries are not just nice, they are necessary!

• A Tree Grows in CantonLibrariEs arE a pLacE for growth. New ideas, old stories, the “Greatest Generation”, Gen X and Y, Baby Boomers and babies, the library has something for all of us.

Story Times introduce our youngest citizens to the world of words—studies find that kids who are read to have a much better chance of succeeding in school.

Partnerships with ArtsinStark have allowed the library to help kids learn how they relate to a larger community. During an Artist in Residence program with local artist Michele Waalkes children blended the creative arts of words and pictures to create

“Until” inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech.

During the summer a second Artist in Residence program created the Story Tree with Building Healthier Communities. Children painted leaves that were added to the tree; it’s now on permanent display on Cleveland Avenue.

“Forests Green, Oceans Blue, Books READ” opened the environment to all readers during our Summer Reading Clubs for 2010. Summer reading concluded with a Green Fair that brought environmental businesses and recycling together with our community at large.

In honor of receiving the National Medal from the Institute for Museum and Library Service Stark County District Library hosted Story Corps the living history project. Residents of Stark County told their stories to a member of their family and the library now houses an archive of some of our living history.

Genealogy hosted their first ever “Diggin’ in the Dark” a genealogy research “lock-in” where research-ers were given the run of the library after hours to spend concentrated time finding their ancestry.

The Outreach Department extended service to nursing homes and assisted living centers, providing monthly programs to residents and outreach collections for residents unable to visit the library.

Our Job Search programming continued during trying economic times. In addition to our annual Opportunities Job Fair, the library added a curriculum of Job Skills computer classes to help people upgrade their computer skills as they search for new employment.

Summer Reading 2010 concluded with a Green Fair that included activities related to the Dr. Seuss story The Lorax.

The Green Fair also featured a fashion show with garments made from recycled materials.

The Library offered several Papermaking programs during Summer Reading. Participants created handmade papers from recycled and natural materials for journals, plantable bookmarks, and other useful paper items.

thE stark count y district Library foundation raises funds to financially support and advance the mission and values of the library. The Foundation has received donations from individuals, foundations, and businesses which have been used to support library programming and to build an endowment fund.
